Really high quality sushi, one of the top spots in the twin cities. I would still say that Kade No Mise is still the #1 sushi in the area, but this is a very close second. It’s also more affordable as well (relatively speaking, still pricey overall). Everything from the Nigiri to the rolls to the appetizers were balanced and packed with flavor. The O-toro melted in your mouth in seconds. Will definitely be back for special occasions.
Had a fabulous time! Our server was incredible and knowledgeable! The food was epic. I loved everything we tried! I think the tuna crispy rice was my favorite thing. The truffle salmon was soooooo good! And the sushi rolls we got were also amazing. I couldn’t decide if the love island or the screaming o was better. Both were so tasty. We will be back!
Food was delicious and they have an extensive Japanese whiskey selection. There was an absolute 🔥 2000's playlist going with bangers that spoke to my millennial heart. Wish the volume was turned down a bit though, and our table was right next to the subwoofer. Our server was professional, responsive and funny.
We had such a great time dining here. Our server was fantastic—friendly and attentive throughout. With reservations in place, we were seated promptly and everything flowed smoothly from the start.
Oh Billy! You have a very fine establishment! I always enjoy my meals here! Excellent staff, food and dining experience! It is a must try if you have not been. I love all the rolls! Fun place to share with a group! You must try the screaming O
Super delicious sushi all their fish is extremely fresh and has amazing taste. All the rolls are crafted beautifully. We had the miso soup as an appetizer and it was phenomenal. We also have blue fin Nigiri, and it was fantastic.
I visited Billy Sushi yesterday — the atmosphere was amazing! The staff were super friendly, and everything felt welcoming and lively. I am from Mongolia and It honestly felt like visiting my uncle’s place — warm, fun, and full of good energy. The sushi was fresh and beautifully made. Definitely one of the best sushi experiences I’ve had in Minnesota!
Highly recommend the omakase courses for your first time. We really enjoyed the food and tried things we wouldn’t regularly. I had an excellent bourbon-esk drink which I look forward to having again in the future.
This was our first time dining at Billy’s Sushi, and it certainly won’t be our last. From the moment we walked in, we were impressed by the inviting atmosphere—modern yet comfortable, with a lively energy that made for a great dining experience. The service was outstanding. Our server took the time to walk us through the menu, offering thoughtful recommendations and ensuring we had everything we needed. It’s always a pleasure when a restaurant staff is not only knowledgeable but also genuinely enthusiastic about the food they serve. Speaking of food—every dish was beautifully presented and packed with flavor. The sushi was fresh, expertly prepared, and had just the right balance of textures and flavors. Whether you’re a sushi connoisseur or just dipping your toes into the world of raw fish, there’s something here for everyone. One small request—please consider adding blue cheese-stuffed olives for martinis. That little touch would be the cherry on top, and I’d be back even sooner! Overall, Billy Sushi delivers on atmosphere, service, and top-quality sushi. Highly recommend!
I came here to have sushi one last time before I have a kidney transplant. I wanted to have the best sushi I could get and I sure got just that. We informed Ilsa, our server of this and she gave me such a great experience. She really made this so exceptional for me and really put care into the experience. This was one of my top 5 meals of all time. I truly cannot say enough good things about this place and Ilsa in particular. You rock Ilsa!
Billy Sushi definitely lived up to the hype. I’m not usually a sushi person because I don’t think the value is worth it, but for once in my American life I found a sushi spot that is worth going back to again and again. The experience here was remarkable. I loved the presentation and color of the sushi. Each roll had its own distinct flavor that left me craving more. Our waiter Ryan was so friendly and attentive which makes a huge difference in customer perception. And lastly, Ryan comped us 2 sakes and my beer because it was my birthday. It’s the details and acts like that, that make you wanting to come back. We were also able to pair our dinner with their basement lounge, which made the night even more special. Thank you Billy Sushi!
Great sushi place! The spring rolls were amazing. Could eat those all day long. Bluefin tuna is a must. Our waitress was amazing and so helpful. All her recommendations were spot on, she really made our experience even better. Even gave me a birthday shot of sake! We sat in the bar area and I actually really enjoyed that, it felt a little more “private” but the whole restaurant has a great vibe.
Billy Sushi is probably one of the best Sushi we have had so far in Minneapolis. You can taste the freshness in every ingredient, they are good size portions as well. Our go to Naughty Ninja and Silly Billy. Exceptional verity of Sakes, must try. This place is very busy and popular, we had a reservation but we still had to wait about 10mins before we got seated.
Amazing sushi with the freshest ingredients!! Amazing drinks and service make coming here relaxing!! Just add in dessert and it’s my all in one place.
Holy smokes! I was impressed as soon as I stepped into this establishment. It is a beautiful restaurant with exquisite service! The food was delicious and the drinks were strong. This whole experience was awesome. I ordered a bunch of food and a couple drinks it was 100 bucks! I thought it would be more, it could easily feed two people and it would be worth it and enjoyable. The server was impeccable and the atmosphere is upscale and laid-back. This place is perfect for birthdays and dates in my opinion. I wish that I could eat here everyday LOL I will be back soon!
I celebrated my birthday at Billy Sushi and had an amazing experience! Our server, Riley, went above and beyond with his service—super attentive and friendly. He recommended a Blue Fin Conversation Starter and the Screaming O roll, and both were phenomenal. We’ll definitely be back soon. If you’re planning a visit, ask for Riley—you won’t be disappointed!
The most wonderful experience. Our server was engaged and knowledgeable, and ALL his suggestions were flawless. Will be back as soon as I can.
It was amazing ! From the hostess seating us to our waitress and chefs ! Every one is so friendly ! Love the atmosphere and secret menu
I don’t think I could rate this place any higher. I came in at the end of the night which typically leads to a lesser experience. This was not the case here. The service was amazing, my waitress was very attentive and gave GREAT recommendations. I had an order in mind after glancing at the menu but my waitress gave some different suggestions. These suggestions were a KNOCKOUT! I got the COD off the appetizer menu and it was the best thing I had all night. I also got the ninja roll, it was one of the Billy’s specials rolls. I tipped well and totaled out at $90 for myself. I would 11/10 say that it was worth every cent!
Billy Sushi offers an upscale dining experience with a vibrant ambiance and attentive service. While parking can be tricky since it's located in downtown MN, the atmosphere and food more than make up for it. The Japanese-style fried chicken is a unique and flavorful dish, and the Squid Game was cooked to perfection. The Yaki Udon, with its different types of noodles, was absolutely delicious. Their sushi is a highlight--I highly recommend the Fancy & Furious roll, Uncultured Swan, and the Double D. With a nice variety of cocktails to complement the meal, Billy Sushi stands out as an excellent choice for upscale Asian cuisine.
Whether you're looking to grab a sushi boat or some small bites to eat, Billy Sushi has you covered. I've been here several times and the staff/customer service has always been wonderful and personable. Sushi is on point, and the atmosphere has always been fun and lively. Grab some friends, order some sushi, and enjoy the sushi-boat presentation. Don't forget to order a Sake to pair with it all! If you're looking to head out after there is Billy After Dark's cocktail bar downstairs (entrance is through adjacent alley) Looking forward to coming here again and again.
This was our first time at Billy Sushi. We walked in without a reservation and were able to get a spot at the sushi bar. Best spot in the house! We got to see all of the sushi being made and the chefs were super nice. Great selection of sake. We had the Bill Sans Po Boy, Hamachi jalapeño, Squid game, Avocado tempura, Silly Billy, Naughty Ninja and the Spicy salmon hand roll. Looking forward to trying Omakase next time.
I only came here for drinks so I can't speak to the food, but man this is a cool place! The drinks themselves were all very unique and delicious. The hi-chew shot is a great way to start the night. Our server was friendly, and the atmosphere is so different and cool. Highly recommend coming here after dinner for drinks!
I had a great experience here. The food was delicious and inspiring. The menu was well written with cheeky discriptions. Yes it's a little pricey but the portions were rather large. Great quality meat as well so it was worth the $$. Cocktails were also refreshing and well made. The atmosphere was alive, busy, full of life. Staff were pleasant, professional, attentive and were very nice. I would dine here on a regular basis if I lived here. I would also come back to visit when I travel back to Minneapolis.
Honestly the miso soup was the best thing I ate all night. JFC good but boring. Vegetarian roll salty but that’s it.. great service!
Billy Sushi is absolute fire. I am not a big sushi/sashimi fan, but here I am willing to try almost anything because they do it so well. Been a few times and every time, the service and the food is AMAZING. Worth the wait and the 💰.
The seafood here was very delicious. The thick slabs of fish on the seafood platter I believe was my favorite. The different rolls we had were delicious as well. We needed to take off mangoes as one of our crowd was allergic. They actually forgot this and this could have been very dangerous. Overall the staff was very helpful. Will be in again soon. I also had their whiskey drink which was very tasty. The smell of it was pretty incredible. We ordered a pine ridge bottle which was a good supplement to the sushi. The avocado bites were so good, they had a type of truffle sauce on them. Definitely recommend getting those.
What a wonderful dining experience! The service was great and food came out quickly! For starters we ordered the Hot Si-Fu salad, Avocado Tempura, gyoza and JFC. All great selection. The avocado tempura was SO good fresh. So simple and so tasty! The si-fu salad had good flavor but could use a bit more cucumber for my taste. For rolls, we had the Silly Billy, Lefty and Bad & Bougee. ALL specialty rolls were so delicious! The three P’s spicy sauce on the lefty had a great kick. And the Silly Billy has the perfect amount of sushi meat to veggies along with the sauce. But I will say the specialty sushi rolls were packed with sushi meat, and veggies (avocado etc). Definitely worth what you’re paying. We also ordered sashimi (salmon and otoro) and it was thick juicy pieces. They also had bluefin tuna Kama and oh my that baby was hugeeeeee. We did not anticipate the size but it was very fatty and delicious. I appreciate the waiter giving us a heads up on the wait time as well. Overall the food was very delicious and service was great! I would 100% recommend and definitely go back to try other specialty rolls.
Great experience! We were sat right away when we arrived and greeted by the server very quickly. Our server was on point with when she stopped by for ordering drinks, apps, then other food. We order the Salmon Carpaccio, gyoza, yellowtail & fatty tuna nigiri, George Clooney & B.A.D & Boujee. Favorites were the salmon carpaccio and funny tuna nigiri. Fish was a very impressive quality and tasted great being in Minnesota! Price point was a little spendy but I thought it was worth it given the high quality or service and well done food. Major plus is the menus had photos of the food!
Make sure to reserve your table at least 2 months in advance to get the best times. It's worth the wait! Exceptional sushi and actual waygu beef, taste is amazing.
Had a delightful evening at Billy's. We started with the Foie Gras Caviar Nigiri and then ordered Omakase. Everything was amazing. The chef and our waitress were impeccable and attentive. I'm so glad there are sushi restaurants like this in Minneapolis.
My first time dining at Billy Sushi in Minneapolis and I had an outstanding experience. Our evening was made even better by our exceptional waiter, Bryan, whose excellent customer service and great recommendations enhanced our visit. We started with a selection of appetizers: the salmon carpaccio, truffle salmon, hamachi jalapeno, and the French Laundry. Each dish was absolutely delicious, setting high expectations for the rest of the meal. Of the appetizers, the French Laundry was the best! It was foie gras topped with caviar! It was full of indescribable flavors! Who knew that duck/goose liver can be this satisfying?! For our main entrees and sushi, we ordered the hibachi salmon, chef's choice Sashimi (30pcs), chef's choice Nigiri (8pcs), Unagi sashimi, Unagi hand roll, Number 9, A-A-Ron, Tiger Maki, and Mojo sushi roll. Every bite was flavorful and expertly prepared. Of the rolls that we ordered, I would highly recommend getting the Tiger Maki! This roll had soft shell crab, spicy tuna, yamagobo topped with eel and salmon, with touch of chili oil and Unagi sauce. Perfect amount of rice for all rolls and nigiris! The sashimi was definitely the highlight of our meal, showcasing the freshness and quality of the ingredients. If the Chu Toro already melted in my mouth, I'm sure the O-toro will be 100x better! I was hoping it came with the chef's choice, but it didn't. Will get it next time for sure! Be sure to order a side of the REAL Japanese Wasabi! It tastes so much better than what you typically get at other places. I don't think I can go back to the "FAKE" wasabi anymore. Overall, Billy Sushi delivered an exceptional dining experience with delicious food and top-notch service. Highly recommended for sushi lovers and anyone looking for a memorable meal in Minneapolis. Happy Eating!
No wait, and professional waiter who knows his menu. Delicious food.
The best sushi in America! Most certainly the best in Twin-Cities! 1. Reservation: a must, they are very busy and packed! 2. Food: Amazing! Sushi rolls, sashimi.. the whole selection is amazing. fresh and creative take on all rolls they have 3. Drinks: quite a few cocktails to choose from. They have one of the best whiskeys and sake selection in town. Try those too! 4. Service: professional, swift and courteous. 5. Overall atmosphere is lively, quite loud and happy! All in all, you gotta be here to know how great it is!
We came to this area for a college visit and found this restaurant on a basic internet search. One thing most important to me, is someplace that can cook better than me. This is it! The tempura avocado was something I haven't seen on a menu yet, the mocktails were amazing, along with this prosecco mixed-drink combination I had. The sushi was very fresh and there were so many combinations it was hard to choose. Another surprise was the overall ambience, from the artwork, to the staff, to the tiny little sponge napkins they give you tonwash your hands in the beginning, that grow, when they pour water on them to the incredible serving staff...it all deserves a rating better than 5 stars. And, they had a coat rack--free--so nice given that it's freezing and being able to hangout elsewhere was so very nice. Absolutely a vibe that will truly be hard to replicate. Thank you everyone who made our evening magical & gave it the polished effect ✨️.
Great atmosphere with amazing service. Busy on a Friday night. We got the sashimi platter and a couple rolls which were amazing. Only downside is there wasn’t a baby changing table in bathroom which is disappointing for families dining out!
This is the best sushi I've had in Minneapolis. The fish is fresh and they do not use invitation crab. The tempera in the photo is shrimp. The batter is light snd crispy. At our last visit, we had vegetable tempera and I was disappointed that the onions were not battered very well and the portion size was small. The spring rolls are phenomenal. Tables are close together and so conversations are not very private. Music is Okay but on louder side. My major gripe is that they do not offer dessert. This is a bummer for people celebrating special occasions. Billy..please add dessert!
The sushi rolls were the best part of the night. My partner and I came on a Monday, and the sashimi was super fresh and melted in our mouths. The beef udon wasn’t great. It lacked flavor, and the beef was tough. I’d skip it next time. Service was decent, and we loved the music and overall vibe. We’ll definitely be back to try more.
Sushi with good quality, very pricey though. The place was kind of tight. We were out for our anniversary and it did not feel special because there was other people sitting so close to us. They can hear our conversation and we can hear theirs. We had a moment where the other table and us just stayed quiet because we can hear each other's conversation. I would recommend this place though because the fish quality and food. This time we ordered the omakase, it was a nice 5 course meal.
Our first time going to celebrate our anniversary. I love Japanese food and especially sushi. Billy sushi has great vibes and great food. It's definitely expensive so be prepared to spend some money. Was a smaller resturant than I expected, but easy to navigate to and find. Was able to sit earlier than my reservation time, and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable with the menu items. How often would I come here? Maybe once in a while or on special occasions. I will say this is probably one of the better places to eat sushi in MN.
Beautiful venue although a little loud and tables a bit squished together. Food was fantastic. Creative and delicious sushi, good drink menu. Great service. As a member of my party said - hands down the best sushi in Minneapolis. Definitely a place I'll want to go back to.
Sat by myself at the sake bar, was a Wednesday and busy and was a 30-minute wait for the table but the text table was ready was efficient. Very nice vibe, friendly service and attentive for the main. I will try the sushi bar next time and try the omakase. The food itself was wonderful I had medium fatty tuna and salmon sashimi. I didn't get one star only because there was a snafu with the order, partly mine partly the tender, but it should have been picked up but it was all made good. Also even after looking at my bill and adjusting it I saw that I had been charged for the wrong salmon (I ordered regular salmon but was charged for King Salmon) but to be honest I'm not sure which one I received anyway. Regardless, I will definitely return and hope to upgrade my review to a 5 then. Not cheap, but then this quality shouldn't be.
Went to Billy sushi for a date night. Shared the poke bowl (10 out of 10), the George Clooney roll (9/10), and the cod appetizer (6/10, it was a little too fishy tasting for my taste). Service was wonderful. We had a lot of questions about the different types of rolls and our waitress was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful.
Had a coworker recommend Billy as "the best sushi place in MN." That may not be far off with a few exceptions. It was incredibly busy. At times it did feel like the kitchen and waitstaff may have been overwhelmed. The food was very good. My own personal experience; it was a little too loud overall. That said, it was a very good experience and I would recommend it. The silly billy was definitely amazing.
I was not impressed with this restaurant. In a neighboring town for work for a few months, I was on the hunt for good sushi and the majority of people I asked instantly recommended this place. I took the 30-minute uber ride into the city and luckily grabbed a seat at the bar. Now, the service was fairly good upon entry. The hostess was amiable and accommodating, as I did not have a reservation on a Thursday night. The bar service, not so much. The bartender is undoubtedly great at his craft, but he could benefit from some service training and resources on creating memorable experiences and guest engagement. As for the sushi itself, I understand the concept Chef Billy is bringing to his guest; however, the rolls lacked creativity. It's rare to come to a restaurant known for sushi, and the best thing I have is a chicken appetizer. The JFC is an excellent rendition of adult chicken nuggets. I'll try again as I enjoyed the atmosphere and understand that in this industry, we all deserve a little grace. Hopefully, these 3 stars will change to 5!!
We came here for our anniversary and would not return. The sushi was enjoyable, we had the supreme nigiri platter, multiple rolls, drinks, etc. The food was good. However the atmosphere was SO bad, it was not nearly worth the hundreds of dollars. The music choice was rave music. Whoever chose the music had to be on MDMA. Fast paced electronic with heavy base as if we were at a night club. It was so loud we could barely hear each other talking. It actually felt like they were making it unenjoyable, so you would eat and leave faster. I wanted to. Such a let down to have that nice of a meal and not be able to enjoy it. The food was good, on par with good quality sushi, but not better. Service was average. No acknowledgment of our anniversary even though the asked when we made the reservation. Overall, meh.
This place is really odd. Billy Sushi has been hyped up, and we were so excited to try it. We left incredibly disappointed. The price you pay is not worth what you get. The sashimi is cut way too thick and unevenly- quality wasn't anything to rave about, the rolls don't make sense nor are they anything special, and have way too many different kinds of fish in them, the Hamachi app was fantastic- but everything else fell short. The cocktails were okay. We were super bummed to not get warm sake. I had an incredibly bright spotlight shining directly on me through our whole dinner. It would do the atmosphere well to dim those as to not blind their guests. Service was friendly but not incredibly attentive. All in all- we will not be returning after our very underwhelming and weird experience. I'm really hoping we just came on a bad night.
I was hospitalized due to an allergic reaction from this restaurant- I was here with my family in January and Billy Sushi used to be a favorite spot of ours. Unfortunately our dinner went terribly wrong and landed me in the hospital. I have an avocado allergy which I told the waitress at the start of dinner and again when ordering my sushi roll. When the sushi roll arrived the waitress said again (xyz roll with no avocado) I had one bite of the food and immediately felt my throat and lips start to swell which led me to pick through the sushi roll- in which I shockingly discovered there were small pieces of avocado (see attached photo) in each piece of the sushi. My family immediately flagged down the waitress in which she quickly said “oh my god I didn’t know you were allergic”? I then left very quickly with my dad to seek medical care while my mother stayed behind to speak with the manager who was only mildly apologetic and clearly didn’t understand the severity of the situation. I personally received no apology ... and the manager did nothing to rectify the mistake that the restaurant made and did not even offer to cover our dinner bill which was absolutely insulting considering our dinner was completely ruined with us needing to leave as soon as the food had arrived because I needed to go to the hospital. In addition to paying hundreds of dollars for a dinner that WE DIDN'T GET TO EAT- I also had thousands in medical bills and fees because I also had to cancel my vacation due to needing ongoing medical care for a week after the reaction. All of this was completely preventable had the restaurant not served me a dish that had avocado in it (despite me asking multiple times if the roll could be made without avocado). It was even restated when the roll was delivered that is was “avocado free”. Over the past months since the incident, myself and my mother have sent emails that have never been replied to. I would have loved to handle this privately but billy sushi’s lack of response has prevented this from happening. A real shame as I used to love this restaurant.
We have been frequent diners at Billy Sushi and Billy After Dark, and have consistently enjoyed both the food and the service. However, our experience last night was deeply disappointing. We opted for the omakase menu, expecting something special, but our waitress could only tell us it was a four-course meal featuring white fish, with no further details. The meal dragged on for 2.5 hours. Despite informing them of a sesame seed allergy, the third course was served with sesame seeds. Although the dish was remade promptly, my husband still had an allergic reaction, and no explanation was given. When the general manager came over to address the situation, they made light of it, even joking about what was clearly serious. Adding to our frustration, we were offered the option to add a fifth course—an unagi handroll for $25—yet the same handroll is listed for $15 on their regular menu. This pricing discrepancy made no sense and only added to the frustration of an already disappointing evening. To top it off, we all left hungry, the omakase was underwhelming, and despite a small comp, we ended up spending over $800+, leaving us feeling completely robbed.
I was overcharged at this restaurant earlier in the month of February. I checked my bank statement about a week after dining at Billy Sushi. I promptly called the restaurant once I noticed. The employee I spoke to said she would tell the manager, and that the manager would get back in touch with me. It has been at least a week since that conversation. I have not been contacted by the restaurant at all. I initially left the restaurant feeling as if the food was good, but that I was not "wowed" by the experience (especially for the price & quality of service we received). Now after the awful customer service I will never come back. Be sure to check your bank statement after eating here.
