Opinions de Chez TJ Mountain View
If you've never been to a Michelin starred restaurant before, you are in for a treat! We had the tasting menu and I ordered the "Grand" wine pairing to accompany it. The menu consisted of 8 courses, 2 of which were desserts. Each course was an exquisitely crafted piece of art with a medley of contrasting, yet complementary flavors. In addition to the food, Michelin starred restaurants are well known for their exceptional service, and Chez TJ is no exception. There were a plethora of staff that all worked together to ensure a seamless, exceptional dining experience. The sommelier (Ted) did an excellent job finding a variety of unique and sometimes unusual flavors that nicely complimented each dish! The cost is equally as impressive as the food and service but that is to be expected at this level of culinary excellence. If you're used to eating at Michelin starred restaurants every month then the cost won't phase you. Otherwise it's an infrequent treat that will leave you with fond memories to last a lifetime and, in my opinion, is well worth the occasional cost. I'm rooting for their 2nd star!
Good food and service. Romantic. Expensive but worth it.
I rarely write reviews, but I’ve been to several Michelin-starred restaurants and I’ve never experienced one-star food at this level. Every bite was unique, nuanced, complex and packed with flavor. The canapés were all surprising, and the perfect way to wake up your tastebuds. From that point, every course worked together to create an incredible experience that ended with two fun and delicious desserts. Ted’s wine pairings were absolutely perfect and he was a blast to have at the table—the way he expertly described wine was clear and very high-level, yet still fun and relatable. Service was warm and friendly and the house was cozy and inviting. So unique to be dining in a historical space! We sat inside, but look forward to coming back when the weather is warmer to experience their outdoor area. And the garden is beautiful—such a unique element. Make sure you ask for a tour! All in all, there’s something really exciting going on at Chez TJ. Chef Stan Michalski’s food is truly next-level and I can’t wait to come back and try more.
Delicious meal. The truffle supplement was heavenly. They deserve three stars. I’ve been to many 2 and 3 star Michelin stars and this was one of the best meals I’ve had.if there’s a few places in the Bay area you need to try-this. The ambiance is casual yet can be formal. Wonderful place to have a date, celebrate milestones. The staff are super friendly and attentive without being suffocating. I can keep giving it five stars but this institution is the place to celebrate birthdays and other important celebrations.
Very positively surprised by my vegan customization. Unlike many other Michelin starred restaurants which don’t specialize in vegan and simply just take out the meat, my dish was well thought and delicately balanced. My dining partner went for vegetarian, he really loved it too. I think it’s quite expensive for a one-started restaurant. Base set for the set menu and lowest-tier wine pairing comes close to $400 per person. I have only dined in Michelin restaurants in Europe, this price is quite high for my experience.
My husband and I loved our dinner at Chez TJ! The food and courtyard setting were perfect for a lovely evening out. The courtyard to the side of the main entrance has been enlarged and modified extensively to create a beautiful spacious Covid addressed seating area. The garden surrounding the courtyard was lovely, adding to the romantic ambiance. We dressed for the cold evening and stayed very comfortable with the multiple heaters placed near the tables. I brought a blanket for my legs to make sure I stayed warm since I tend to run cold. The wait staff was friendly and available yet not overly fawning. The meal was leisurely but paced nicely. There were gaps between plates but it just meant more time for conversation and didn't seem overly slow. Chez TJ offers their tasting menu only. If you are looking for a big steak, this isn't your place. But if you enjoy lots of small portions with a mix of different flavors and bites that dance on your tongue, you'll love this restaurant. The menu changes weekly so there doesn't seem to be a point in talking too much about specific dishes other than to say we enjoyed the playfulness of the flavors. There was only one dish that was bland and needed the caviar that was offered at an extra cost. My husband ordered it, I did not. We both left quite full, felt the price was very fair especially compared to other Michelin rated restaurants and would be happy to go back anytime.
They sell board games in addition to an awesome setup to bring friends if you need a space to play games you may not own and want to test first
Had an enchanting evening Chez TJ. The food was sublime, especially the quail. The chefs created imaginative and delicately-balanced combinations of flavours. The service was excellent - warm, welcoming and entertaining. You could feel how much they wanted you to know all about the food and really enjoy it. We went with two bottles of excellent saké for four pax. I think Chez TJ deserves a second star!
3 girlfriends visited for a special birthday treat. The service was impeccable. The sommelier was so informative and personable. The chef came to visit to hand grind the fresh truffles on our homemade spaghetti . I felt like I was meeting a celebrity. What a humble and talented man. The food was out of this world. I can’t tell you what I ate because there were too many to remember but everything was catered for our sensitivities and exquisitely prepared and explained. The space is so beautiful and cozy. I can’t wait to visit again. Thank you for the hospitality Chez TJ.
Best Vegetarian 8 course (17 dishes) tasting Menu Never thought ill experience something like this… Special food was cooked for kids, truly an experience
I️ brought a customer to dinner here and what a great way to get to know each other as wave after wave of creative courses landed before us. The time between courses worked for my agenda. And we saved driving 2 hrs up to Yountville to have a similar experience. So lucky to have this restaurant in our backyard.
My wife and I celebrated my birthday here. Excellent fine French cuisine and superb service with personal touches. A wonderful and memorable experience. The only negative was the rowdy guests at the large table across the room.
My daughter and I just dined at Chez TJ for the first time. We had heard such good things about Chef Stan's food and we were excited to try it. It was spectacular! What a fabulous evening we had. The ambiance was lovely, the staff was friendly and professional, and the food was the star. Each course was a combination of flavors and textures that were both beautiful and delicious. Only to be perfectly complemented by the wine pairing suggested by Ted, the excellent Sommelier. And those desserts. Wow! What a finish to an incredible meal. We ended our evening with a tour of the garden which looks lovely. We can't wait to come back in the summer months to enjoy that as well. Thank you Chez TJ for a wonderful experience!
We gad a wonderful dining experience for my Birthday. The food was delicious. The service was excellent. The well decorated house turned restaurant was warm and inviting. My family was in the restaurant business, so it's easy to say I can be very hard to please. Every part of my evening was lovely.
Great homey vibe. The food was excellent; loved how all the flavors played in each dish! Delightful to the palette. 😋 The servers were nice, too.
A truly impressive accomplishment of a meal: food, presentation, service, environment were all exemplary. Truly a treat, and well worthy of the Michelin star (bordering on 2, imho). We'd been slightly disappointed at Chez TJ a few times in the distant past, but decided to give it another go. It's transformed: this time, none of our prior hiccups recurred. The food was sublime, with a full range from subtlety to appropriately vibrant flavors. The service (especially from Ted, the sommelier) was absolutely fantastic. We requested a couple of accommodations (one food, one wine); both were handled extremely gracefully, and we very much enjoyed the result. Highly recommended. We'll be back!
This was my first Tasting Menu style meal, and I'm extremely satisfied with my experience. The restaurant is built out of a beautiful Victorian house with intimate seating. Our host started us off by informing us of the add-on options, which included French truffles, imported wagyu beef, or caviar. We didn't opt for these, but did include the wine pairing option with dinner (I highly recommend this). Each course came out at a slow pace, allowing you to really focus on the flavors and textures of each dish. We never felt rushed to complete a course (granted, this is a 3-hour dinner). The food was superb, cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. Even the bread was incredible, and was paired with butter cultured in-house. The desserts were a perfect sweet capstone after lots of rich umami flavors. We were given a nice card for our Anniversary near the end of our meal. Overall, this was a fun and fancy way to celebrate a special occasion. All food is seasonal, and the menu changes frequently, so be ready to try anything!

Excellent food and service! The ambiance of this charming Victorian property is lovely and has modern accents. It was very clean and we felt very safe eating here during COVID. My only criticism is that the wine pours for an added flight could be a little heavier. Otherwise, excellent all around!
I really enjoyed our visit yesterday evening. George Aviet, the owner of Chez TJ came around the tables and greeted us during the dinner service. The open ambience was relaxing and beautiful. All the staffs were wearing masks and took precautions. There were heating lamps in case the weather gets a bit chilly. Air purifier in the bathroom to help with air conditioning and keep the impurities out. 10/9th, 2020 menu Oyster with fennel, gougere, wagyu “pop” and golden raspberry Pogne with whipped butter Crab salad with sorrel with Mandarin Black cod with corn and fingerlime Tortellini with duxelles and mushroom broth Celery sorbet, apple, puffed barley Pain levain Lobster Squab with plums Frisée with preserved bergamot vinaigrette Whipped fromage blanc with garden peaches Supplemental: cheese dish - get it! Chocolate tarte Berries and cream Mignardise The service was exceptional and the dishes were all tasty. Our sommelier, Thomas, was very knowledgeable with wines and gave us great suggestions. We hope to come back soon — I’m a fan!
I can’t believe a place like this needs a review. A total treasure of the Bay Area. I spent my birthday with them. A food journey made special. What else is there to say. Thank you to the team. Very accommodating. Felt hosted all the way. Left with memories of taste and thoughtfulness. Big love.
We left satisfied with Chez TJ's "presentations"! As our server said, we didn't need to make a lot of decisions. The course was $195 pp before tax (9%) and gratuity, and there are optional cheese plates and supplement menu to choose from, though we don't drink alcohol. The course took roughly 2.5 - 3 hours so we spent a lot of time chatting between plates. All staffs were very nice to us and made sure we were happy and enjoy our meals.
Chez TJ exceeded my expectations. I was blown away by every course. A lot of thought went into every single dish and each ingredient was intentional. With the buttery rich beurre blanc which came with the lobster raviolo, there was fresh bite of citrus. The gameyness of the deer was cut by the buttery mushrooms and celery root. Each course lent itself to the next and the wine pairings were exceptional. The only criticism I would have is that the dessert courses were a little large and had me bursting at the seams (which isn't a terrible problem to have) and the wine pairing for the dessert courses was a tad too sweet. However, these did not detract from the overall experience. 10/10
My husband took me here for my birthday and it was wonderful. The dishes were beautiful and all the flavors were really well balanced. I did happy food dances every time I took a bite. We went with the wine pairing and their sommelier Ted was very knowledgeable and enthousiastic when presenting the bottles. I'm glad that we went with the pairing because it made every course even more enjoyable. I was surprised by the amount of dessert courses we got. Including a personalized dessert for my birthday, I think we had 4 courses of yummy sweet treats, all paired with a beautiful port. The whole experience felt very intimate and precious and I highly recommend you give this place a try if you love good food or if you have something special to celebrate. Their entire team will absolutely make it worth your while.
We so enjoyed this magnificent restaurant some friends recommended to us. We experienced a beautiful time with first-rate meal and fantastic staff and a talented chefs. This restaurant is right at the top on our list and we will definitely come back very soon. Fantastic food with great concoctions of flavors - great for a special occasion! Highly recommended.
We like this place for wines and fresh ingredients in creative dishes. Music choice (60-70th upbeat mix songs) was distracting and not really fitting the relaxed enjoyment of refined dining. ( Maybe they inherited it from (unfortunately closed:( fun and casual pizza-beer place next door;)?) It was hard to carry conversation through some songs as well, and we had to ask to make it less loud. (re. June 29, 2021 note) We wish some more though will be put in a background music collection to inhence the special expirience of special-ocasions french themed upscaled dining. Food was great, as well as very top-notch service.
It is truly one of the best bay area restaurant credible service out of this world food tasting portions look small but absolutely delicious and fulfilling plan on spending wonderful evening specially with their new outdoor set up it is so cozy and romantic can’t wait to revisit such a wonderful wine selection, Thank you for the great service, in a classic atmosphere.
Dining at this Victorian-style establishment was a memorable experience. The Chef's Tasting Menu showcased innovative dishes with impeccable presentation, each course a delightful surprise. The attentive service enhanced the evening, making us feel well cared for. The intimate atmosphere added to the charm, creating a perfect setting for a special occasion. However, the high prices may not suit every budget. Parking required some effort, as there is no private lot, but nearby public parking was available. Overall, a culinary journey worth embarking on
An elegant dining experience with a prix-fixe French inspired menu. The restaurant was excellent at dealing with dietary restrictions, and gave one of us an unaltered experience so we got to see all the clever ways they accommodated us. Service was excellent, the outside dining was cozy, and the ambiance felt like being invited into the chef's personal kitchen. Definitely for special occasions - it was a 2 1/2 hour experience from beginning to end. Thanks Chez TJ for the wonderful memories.
Great fine dining place for a celebration. We paid little over $300 per person. This is a set menu with French cuisine. The service was great and staff were very responsive to any inconvenience or dietary restrictions. They even gave us a tour of their backyard garden. Our favorites were asparagus veloute, caviar, oysters, squab, Paris Brest and ice cream with cherries.
This was a once in a lifetime experience. We went on a Thursday night and there were only three couples including us having dinner at night. The service was far and above what I would ever expect. Tatiana it was our fine dining "cruise director " was simply amazing. The building itself is just beautiful. Even though it's in the oldest house in Mountain View on its original foundation, the interior is contemporary classic. We had a wild game menu with a vintage wine pairing. I myself and not a big wine drinker and have it really understood the appeal. However I now understand how certain wines enhance the flavor of a meal when paired with the right fod. Dinner was a 3 and 1/2 to 4 hour experience and one that will live with me forever. I live less than a mile away from this restaurant and for 30 years have thought about coming here. I am very glad I did, The people we dealt with (Paul and Tatiana) were able to explain the menu in the wine pairing and where it came from incredibly well. This was not just a meal, this was an event for us and while I won't delve into the specifics of our meal, I can tell you that it was without a doubt, one of the best meals that we've ever had. Because of the vintage wine pairing, our bill was substantial. But at the end of the day, absolutely worth the experience. My recommendations are if you want to go to this restaurant, expect to pay a minimum of $500 for two meals not including beverages. A 20% gratuity is automatically added to the bill so tipping is not necessary even though we gladly tipped extra. Our final bill came to $2479.88. (than you visa) lol. This is a Michelin star restaurant in absolutely worth every penny. My compliments to the chef and the staff.
Thank you so much for graciously hosting my us for our anniversary dinner at your amazing restaurant. We were treated like royalty. The food, service and wine were all superb. Most definitely Michelin Star worthy – without question. Ted is so knowledgeable and friendly. All the wait staff were incredible. But, the food was the star! Each course was unique and creative – and of course, delicious. I’ve told all my friends, and we look forward to returning over the holidays.
We had fish, beef, two rounds of dessert, and more. Yummyyy. I was 100% full, food just the perfect amount. Pairing was great too. Seafood going with salt, sweet with sweet. The glass with the steak was full and oaked. The place was quiet with light music, decorated in a European style with abstract paintings. Candles on the table. Compared to the Michelin 1 star french cuisine I had in SF last year, this one in the southbay exceeded my expectation by so much!
Top notch fine dining. The place is so lovely and the service/attention to detail is beyond amazing. We really loved how our sommelier describes wines, so knowledgeable and poetic. My favorite dish was the sweet and sour cold veggie salad - so refreshing and energetic. It takes 3.5-4hr of your time. Will def return.
The staff at chez TJ are some of my favorite people in the peninsula. They are always so positive and accommodating, creating an excellent dining experience. All the ingredients are high quality and the chef creates fascinating combinations of flavors in the courses. Allow 3-4 hours for the full reservation. There's also an incredible wine pairing list as well as some nice cocktails (the old fashioned was excellent). We're never disappointed at Chez TJ and will be returning soon!
Delicious Michelin rated restaurant with a beautiful newly built outdoor patio along the restaurant garden. French style service with a smile and a backstory for each dishes inspiration and Provence. Great treat to have the local gem reopen. From their signature pommes soufflé with Kaluga caviar to fresh riffs of a watermelon juice centered bonbon it was a delightful birthday splurge and memory!
The best Michelin starred restaurant I've tried in the area! Tasty food, inventive dishes, great wine, romantic ambience and phenomenally polite staff. The chef personally went through all tables and came across very welcoming, genuine and humble. The black cod was out of this world and the sourdough bread was the best I've ever had; the tortellini needed some work. Highly recommended, especially for a romantic occasion, and the 7-course meal was worth the price tag for the area. In terms of culinary experience expected of a Michelin starred restaurant, this is substantially better than Madera and The Village Pub.
Exquisite meal from start to finish. On the expensive side, but we knew that going in. The set menu changes frequently, so it might be different of you decide to go! Hospitality was A++ and our server Scott made sure to not only treat us well, but add his personality into the presentation and conversation. The menu said to expect 2.5-3 hours for the full meal to be served - ours was roughly 4 hours so be sure to keep your schedule clear if you go. But the flavors in every dish was well worth the trip, and we'll be keeping this place in mind the next time we have something big to celebrate!
Such amazing treats for the palate!!!! We loved the french inspirated experience. We had a degustation menu, with small portions so we could taste so many different dishes in one same dinner. I loved everything! The staff ( especially the french person) was fantastic. The decoration was beautiful, with cozy private rooms for a nice group ambiance.
Came here to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Dishes are very well composed, balanced, and executed. Flavors are very much European inspired, but with nice inventive touches to keep things interesting! The squab dish was the highlight for me - perfectly mid-rare without being too gamey in flavor. My wife’s favorite was the octopus, served with a broth and pepper oil - fresh, bright flavors and texture had a nice bite. Service was very warm, welcoming and attentive. Very deserving of its 1 Michelin star, and is a prime example of that, even when compared with the more difficult European standards.
One of the best fine dining experience I had at Bay area - all food tasted great and was presented thoughtfully. A very memorable experience.
A home-like style Michelin restaurant. Food on average is very good with specially designed mixtures of flavors. Smoked steak is the best! The smoked flavor is very good. It's a nice place for celebration and they gave us a complimentary dessert for birthday.
Superb! We visited Chez TJ a few days ago for dinner and the whole experience was fantastic. We were treated to the seven course (plus multiples surprises from the kitchen) experience where you don't get to see the menu beforehand but get surprised at every course. The staff carefully noted any dietary restrictions and went out of their way to accommodate my wife's preferences (vegetarian but open to a few select types of fish). Every course was beautifully crafted with attention to the smallest details. Even the smallest addition to the plate was bursting with flavor. The kitchen really knows how to transform every ingredient and create wonderful and sometimes unexpected flavor combinations. A truly memorable meal! Service was fantastic throughout the 3+ hour experience and we will definitely come back for another dinner soon. Highly recommended!
The tasting menu is the one most people probably go for. Before they begin, they'll ask if you want a different type of meat, or something special added on like truffle. The tasting menu was an 8 course meal, and it was perfect. Each dish was incredibly well plated and the flavors really balanced each other out. They will give you a description of the dish, and if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask - they are incredibly knowledgeable about the intricacies of the food. The service was *fantastic*, and the environment is inside an old Victorian home. It takes around 15-20 minutes after you finish your plate before the next one arrives. Expect the dinner to last around 2.5 hours.
I've come here for caviar and truffles quite a few times, and almost each visit begins with freshly baked levain. The small garden is also lovely. The restaurant is housed in a charming cottage, creating a quiet and cozy atmosphere. I've enjoyed good conversations with friends here, accompanied by memories of excellent food.
What a wonderful dining experience! The staff was very attentive and friendly, and the food was out of this world. The wine paired so nicely with the food as well. The wait between dishes was pretty long, so I probably won’t be dining here again any time soon. It was a lovely dinner though. Many thanks to the chef! :)
It was actually a nice experience with the spring special menu. Tastes are balanced, not too salty sauce or too sweet for desserts. Especially love the starting bites, flavorful bonito dish, plate cleanser sorbet, wagyu (sauce is terrific) and the two dessert dishes (beautiful Sakura mousse and tasty coconut Paris Brest). 7-course portion is big for me. I will revisit for 4-course in the future if the menu online looks good.
Amazing experience with a touch of grandeur and excellent staff to provide a memorable experience. Worth the spend for a special occasion. Our dinner was a 2.5 hour 7-course meal experience with every course cooked with such uniqueness, creativity and enjoyable taste. Staff explained every course in detail. They made a birthday celebration special with a nice dessert, custom menu card, greeting card and a cute gift bag. Definitely Worth the Michelin 🌟
I've been meaning to try this place out for years, and finally got around to it with several friends. What a wonderful experience. Really nice ambiance, excellent service and the food was amazing. It is everything you would expect from a restaurant with a Michelin star. I do have an issue with the fact that they only have a single bathroom. I understand it's a historical building, but are you telling me you can't put a nice porta potty in the garden? It really detracts from what is otherwise a quite pleasant and elegant experience. I highly highly highly recommend getting a wine pairing. You can even split a wine pairing which is what I do because it's just too much wine for one person.

Excellent French cuisine! Amazing experience, great ingredients, execution and presentation. Every bite is a flavorful explosion, be sure to pair the dishes with the recommended wine. You can close with the cheese cart, and will enjoy every course!

Had a chance to dine at Chez TJ last week. The charming Victorian House adds a distinct flair to this upscale dining experience. The newly acquired chef offered an exquisite array of dishes in the tasting menu. Will highly recommended the restaurant for a memorable meal. This was our second visit , we were very impressed again.
A Masterclass in Dining and Hospitality We had an absolutely amazing dinner at Chez TJ. From the first bite of the Pear Panna Cotta with Kaluga Caviar to the final Lime & Coconut Ganache, every course was beautifully executed and inventive. A massive standout of the evening was Ted, the sommelier and our server Jessie. They truly made the night for us. Not only is his knowledge of the wine list and the "Grand Wine Pairing" impeccable, but he is also incredibly funny and kind. He has a way of making high-end wine service feel approachable and genuinely fun, which really elevated the entire experience. If you go, definitely lean on his expertise—you’ll be in great hands.
Came here for dinner outdoors, and the outside setup was great. The garden was lush, and the tables were fairly distanced. The food was quite good, with a flair for the dramatic (as in, our server brought over a lacquered box to show the truffles being offered that night). The dishes are fairly creative (such as a palate cleanser in the form of fruit punch encased in a hard chocolate shell) and quite good. The overall experience was very pleasant.
Had a chance to dine at Chez TJ, and overall, it was a memorable experience. The food was beautifully prepared and full of flavor. However, the portion sizes were quite small. It’s more about the experience, presentation, and quality than leaving full. If you appreciate fine dining and don’t mind the smaller portions, Chez TJ delivers on taste and attention to detail.
Food is pretty good, the only miss for me was the palette cleanser between the mains. They had baked Alaska for one of the dessert course! Hard to find dish nowadays. The duck was delicious. The only gripe I have is the timing of each course; for what felt like the first 3/4th of the experience, each course was spaced maybe a bit too far apart (20-30 minutes). Then as we approached the dessert courses, they started coming in almost too fast ( 5-8 minutes within serving the previous one).
Dining at Chez TJ in Mountain View is an experience steeped in history, charm, and high expectations. The restaurant is located in a beautifully preserved Victorian house, and the setting is intimate and inviting - the kind of place that sets the tone for a special night out. The meal itself, however, was a bit of a mixed bag. The tasting menu featured a variety of dishes, many of which were technically well-executed but didn’t particularly stand out. The main fish course, in particular, was surprisingly bland, lacking the depth or creativity you might expect from a restaurant of this caliber. While nothing was bad per se, much of the meal felt more like a checklist of fine-dining tropes than a unique or inspired culinary journey. That said, there was one clear culinary high point: the steak course. It was, without exaggeration, one of the best steaks I’ve ever had - perfectly cooked with a rich, complex flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture. It was a reminder of the kitchen’s potential and left a strong impression that lingered long after the plate was cleared. Service during dinner was adequate but slightly clumsy at times. There were a few awkward pauses between courses, and some interactions felt rehearsed or lacking in warmth. It wasn’t a dealbreaker, but it also didn’t match the polish you’d expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant. There was one point where we had nearly 30 minutes between courses, which was noticeably long. What truly elevated the entire evening - and turned what might have been a forgettable experience into something genuinely memorable - was Ted, the sommelier and manager. From the moment he approached our table, he brought an energy and hospitality that felt deeply personal and sincere. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the wine pairings and offered thoughtful explanations without ever being overbearing. The highlight of the night came after dinner, when Ted graciously offered us a tour of the property and gardens. Walking through the grounds under the evening sky, hearing about the history of the house, the kitchen’s philosophy, and the care that goes into the garden-grown ingredients - it added an emotional and narrative depth that the meal alone hadn’t quite provided. In the end, I’m torn on Chez TJ. The food, while competent, didn’t quite live up to expectations aside from that incredible steak. The service during dinner could use more polish. But Ted alone is worth the visit. He brought soul, generosity, and a human touch that made the evening truly special. If you go, go for the setting, go for the steak - but above all, go for Ted.

For a thousand dollars dinner for two, I expected much more. I have had better tasting menus at half the price elsewhere. I requested fewer seafood items. They basically gave me a vegetarian menu with one meat course (steak for which I paid $100 extra, otherwise it would have been quail). The service staff seemed disjointed, often coming in each other’s way and seemed to rush through things. Some of them didn’t seem like they wanted to be there. The wines were ok, not worth the hundreds of dollars they charged. The whole meal is dessert heavy. The desserts are sugar bombs. I guess that’s done so you don’t go home still hungry from the sparse non dessert courses.
Hands down a service first restaurant and the servers and staff were exceptional. They have exceptional service and recommendations that enhanced our dining experience. They were knowledgeable and shared the origin and back stories to many of the items served. But unfortunately outside of the service, the food was just ok. None of the dishes were wow dishes. Some creativity but presentation appears to undermine taste. Portions were also relatively small. I know it's a tasting menu but there weren't any dishes that were portioned as a main dish. Also for fine dining, usually two hours are reasonable but our experience was closer to three which felt like a drag. It's a prefixed menu, I think things could've moved a bit quicker.
The dinner that I had must've been an aberration because if they were all like this, they wouldn't keep their Michelin status. I had high expectations for dinner here, but 30 minute gaps between some courses in the set menu became unbearable. The experience wasn't worth a 3.5 hour dinner. I thought it was just me, but when I've discussed with coworkers, some have had similar experiences. It's nice to have a restaurant of the status so close by and I wish I could feel excited about going there more but it just takes one bad experience to ruin that idea.
The price is definitely top tier. We spent over $1k on food, wine and wagyu option. Service was really good, as expected from a Michelin star restaurant. Food was really slow to come, took 4 hours to finish the meal. It was really cold under the A/C while we got 4 times sorbet. I was cold from the inside out lol. The meat dishes (quail and wagyu) were exceptional. Bakery dishes were quite a disappointment. I think Laduree had better French bakery/cake/desserts in comparison. :) Overall the experience could be much more improved if there isn’t a huge waiting time. (6:45 pm - 10:45 pm) my stomach was hurting at the end. Lovely waiters greeted us from start to finish, much appreciated.
Vegetarian food review only The taste at Chej TJ is really nice and almost everything that the chef prepared was delicious but with one simple problem. The food was simply not filling enough for vegetarians. While preparing vegetarian dishes, it feels like they missed the fact that half a stick of thin carrot is way lighter compared to a meat option and can simply not be an entree in itself. A piece of small grilled cabbage (picture with purple sauce) to replace a bigger piece of meat is simply laughable. I liked the taste a lot so please improve the quantity of vegetarian food.
After 6 years since my last visit to Chez TJ, I had very high expectations coming in for a second visit. Granted I've been to some of the best restaurants in the world since then (dozens of starred restaurants, including over a dozen 3-stared establishments), so my expectations of such a meal might have changed since. This time around, I left Chez TJ hungry and disappointed. Food: high quality ingredients, but too classic, and very tiny portions. Overall we got 7 tiny courses, they were well made but very classic dishes, and I haven't experienced any "wow factor" with any of them. All tastes, textures, and flavors I've experienced before. The overall tastes were too familiar, and bland. The portions were so so tiny that you'd expect to get 20+ courses of that size for a proportionally planned out meal (I've experienced that in other places), we got 7 and we left the restaurant really hungry (I'm not kidding but the moment we got home we had to make ourselves sandwiches to not go to sleep hungry! After paying $500 per person you'd expect to be satisfied - no!?). Wine pairing: we took the nightly pairing for $150, and it was a hit-or-miss, but I'd say nothing was terrible, and some were well paired with the dishes. But (proportionally to the size of the dishes) the sommelier gave us super small pours and no single wine was outstanding. Definitely not worth the price tag. Service: attentive, super slow. Staff was helpful, knowledgable, and professional. But the kitchen service was the slowest I've ever experienced. Over 4 hours we got 10 individual plates (that's 30 minutes from plate to plate, which you eat in 1-2 minutes even if you try to be slow and appreciate every bite because each plate is just one or two bites). Value: definitely not worth it. At a similar price (~$500 per person) you can eat at many 3-starred restaurants in SF which to my taste were 10 times more enjoyable (e.g. Benu, Quince).
I really appreciate the effort that went into this restaurant. It’s a charming spot set in what feels like a converted family home with a cozy and intimate atmosphere. Each dish was beautifully presented and you can tell there was a lot of thought put into the details. That said, the flavors didn’t quite meet my expectations. While everything looked great, the taste was just okay for me. Still, I respect the heart and care they clearly put into the experience.
3 out of 7 courses were nice. Staff was friendly and warm. Service was ok like any other restaurant, nothing great. The place is a house converted to a restaurant, really cozy but need some light music/upgrades is what I felt. Overall it's a good one time tryout restaurant. I expected more from a Michelin star restaurant.
I recently visited Chez TJ and, unfortunately, my experience did not live up to expectations, especially considering the reputation of the restaurant. Upon arrival, the service was not what I’d expect from a fine dining establishment. No one offered to take our coats, and I had to point out and ask multiple times before they understood it should be taken. The lack of attentiveness continued as we waited a long time for our order to be taken, which was frustrating. That being said, the food was quite good, and I particularly enjoyed the smoked quail—it was delicious. However, the overall atmosphere and service left much to be desired, and I don’t think I’ll be returning in the future. While the food was tasty, the experience wasn’t worth the lack of warmth and attentiveness in the service.
Ah! For a place I’ve been waiting to go for so long, it was disappointing. For the price I have been at places that have literally wow’ed me and Chez TJ couldn’t be one of them. Firstly, we told them one of the party does not eat beef but ok with everything else. The entire course for that person was fish on top of fish. The host was so distracted. There was no one at the entrance to welcome. Unfortunately we will not be back.

Came here for my birthday with my husband. It started off well but it went downhill from there. The two of us have many Michelin stars under our belt; Chez TJ missed the mark. We enjoyed the staff’s lively and friendly attitude. But there were several bumps along the way which soured our experience here. (1) I communicated that my husband has a seafood aversion, to which the restaurant responded it would be no problem. They confirmed the seafood aversion upon our arrival, and mentioned that the bass for one course would be replaced with pork. The bass course came and went, the pork substitute was missing entirely from the plate. The server didn’t mention pork at all when describing the plates (perhaps in an attempt to pull a fast one/hoping we had forgotten??) My husband’s plate ended up being just a tiny slice of heart of palm with dollops of puree. At this point, we thought maybe -we- had gotten it wrong. But our menus at the end of the meal came, confirming that pork was on the menu but missing from his plate. We brought this up with the server, who then made a couple of trips back and forth from the kitchen, each time adding extra lines to the story. Apparently the cook on the pork was overdone, and Chef decided not to serve it last minute in an attempt to keep the meal moving. Sure that’s fine, but why hide it from the start? We got nothing more than a verbal “sorry,” which frankly is unacceptable for a meal that cost $668 out the door between food, wine, and mandatory 20% service. Base price is $225 per person; short changing someone a protein course in a situation like this is certainly material. When we had brought up feedback with Selby’s, another Silicon Valley dining cornerstone, they immediately gave us a $150 gift card to come back. Also, there were a number of ways to keep the meal moving while still acknowledging the mistake, perhaps more heart of palm in that dish or a bigger protein portion for the next dish they were still cooking. (2) Michelin or not, my yardstick is whether my water glass ever drops below half. We had to flag a server to have our water glasses refilled. (3) The pacing between the courses was awfully slow. (4) There was only one bathroom available for guests. For a packed Saturday night, it was often occupied. The bathroom wait was often 5-10 minutes. Once during the meal, the bathroom was full when my husband tried it. A server told my husband he would fetch him from the table when the bathroom opened up. Well, he never ended up coming back to fetch my husband. He had to just physically guess and check every so often. (5) We sat in the portion of the dining room that was closest to the kitchen. We heard the kitchen manager yelling (not nicely) at the others to pick up the pace. My husband and I weren’t the only ones to notice this, another couple were shocked as well. And mind you, this wasn’t a one off outburst. It was a constant stream of barking. (6) When I ordered a glass of SauvBlanc, the server poured the entire glass immediately instead of checking the taste with me first. All to say while the steak and the black sesame dessert were highlights, I doubt we will be visiting again.
We had Chef's garden menu. Flavor is good enough. Service is excellent. However the portion is so small you'd be still hungry if not eating many pieces of bread. I don't eat a lot. Prefix menu would be more than sufficient for me every single time in any other restaurant. Not Chez TJ. Quite disappointed.
We had a tasting menu dinner with my husband . The food was ok, really nothing special. We’ve been to many different Michelin restaurants and this one didn’t impress us at all. The service was great in the beginning but then our waiter got busy with other tables. He recommended 2 wines that were completely out of our tastes .. when he was pouring our wines, he spilled a couple of drops on the white table cloth . And finally , the atmosphere and the interior design didn’t impress at all. The lamp on the table had dust on it and the bathroom wasn’t clean .
If we take the price out of the equation, then the pros are: convenient location, interesting food, pretty presentation. They were super proud of the herbs from their garden but seriously, my herbs are a lot fresher, some of theirs were slightly wilted. The lobster smelled a bit fishier than expected. They are very proud that they were flown fresh not frozen. I get mine fresh too and mine smell better so I'm not sure what's going on there. The foie was good but a bit tougher than expected, totally didn't have the melt in your mouth aspect. The lamb and duck were amazing and perfect. The wine pairings actually did pair well. The cons: really expensive for the quality, I've had better meals for around the same, a bit less in London, Copenhagen, and NYC. The truffle add on at $40, totally not worth it. The bodacious fondue was super salty so I gave it to the bf, he loved it. It was also hellaciously long. I was told 3 hours but ours were closer to 4. It started to feel tedious at around 2.5. Service was ok. My water glass wasn't filled very promptly which isn't a big deal but let's face it, you're paying for the experience as well when you're dropping that much per person ($195 prix fix, $120 wine pairing, $40 truffle add on, $25 champagne - per person pre tax pre gratuity, of course). Would I have enjoyed it more if it was half the price? Unfortunately, no. And that's why it's getting 2 stars. It was good for Mountain View but not great, even for the Bay Area.
We have been really enjoying coming to Chez TJ for the past three years, which net out to be about 15 meals during various occasions. The service is always warm and welcoming, the food consistently good and their sommelier Paul always had interesting pairing designs. We never minded the long dining experience and actually really enjoyed the pace. We were a little disappointed last year when they decreased their courses likely due to they have received feedback on the dinner being too long but thought the food was still good and worth it. We recently visited again after their chef change. We were initially very excited given we really like Quince. However, I have to say - the food experience was very subpar for a few reasons 1) most dishes were undersalted or do not have flavor. It is one thing if this is individual dishes, but it’s another thing when it’s universal across all courses. 2) in the past it was very rare when garnish’s purely for the looks but it was obvious that some of the colorful dots on the plates had no flavor whatsoever. 3) the dish designs were off, it was hard to have A B C elements of a dish design all in one bite because there were mismatched numbers of them. 4) they used mango for palate cleanser which was way too sweet. 5) nothing was impressive in a wow kind of way. Service was still good. Wine was still good although it seems their wine director has changed too. We were just quite disappointed and don't think this food justifies the price or a one star title. I hope the new team find their footing soon and do not ruin one of our favorite restaurants.
I had a pleasant experience at this restaurant in terms of service and ambiance. The staff and chefs were very friendly and attentive, making sure we were well taken care of throughout the meal. The atmosphere was warm and cozy. The savory dishes were well executed, with great flavors and high quality ingredients. However, the desserts were a major letdown. Every dessert we tried was overwhelmingly sweet to the point that it was impossible to taste anything else. Despite using premium ingredients, the excessive sweetness made them taste cheap and unbalanced.
Wow!! I should have read some of the recent reviews before deciding on this restaurant for our anniversary!! This place can be a hit or miss depending on the seasonal menu so take this with a pinch of salt. Let me start with complements first. The service here was just what you would expect from one of the priciest dining experiences and the staff really put on a show in describing what to expect from the next bite. The wire pairings really worked and in my view rightly priced. Where I had an issue was in the quality of the food itself. This place could easily pass as a fancy art installation but not as a restaurant. I have been to many famous tasting dinners across the States and this is probably the first time i felt like flushing my hard earned money through the drain. Here are the specifics which I hope the management takes it seriously. 1. The food was bland with subtle flavors (just like someone would describe any french cuisine). However I expected a wow element which sadly I got only from the sweet courses 2. The ingredients itself were very routine and nothing exotic. The beluga caviar was the only exception which again doesn't require an experienced chef to prepare. 3. Molecular gastronomy and artistry was ok but it didn't complement the dishes. I have seen better photos in customer reviews from the past years. If I was only there for Instagram worthy dishes I would have still left disappointed. I felt like the Chef had a day off and trusted the day with some interns. 4. Lastly, the portions were tiny and I still left the place without a full stomach which was my biggest concern.
Food had some interesting flavors, but the seasoning was wildly inconsistent. Had components that were too salty, some too bland (first time I've had sauces that take flavor away from the meat), some excessively sour. Even the palate cleanser was unpalatably sweet. Disappointing consider how nice the ingredients were. Service was well intentioned but awkward and had an inconsistent vibe (felt like every server was employed by a different restaurant). The desserts were solid so props to the pastry chef. (Though the coconut cookies at the end were also inedibly sweet)

Late review, but they failed to serve my main course of pork and didn't do anything to compensate for it. For a meal for 2 at almost $700 out the door it's completely unacceptable. I'm honestly glad they lost their star, they deserved to.
We visited Chez TJ in Mountain View for a special farewell dinner for my mom. While the food was ok and the service during the meal was acceptable, our experience was ultimately ruined by an upsetting and unprofessional encounter with the restaurant manager. Before our visit, we called ahead to ask if we could pay with a Chinese credit card. The manager (who also serves as the sommelier) said he would look into it and call back—but never did. When we tried to use the card after dinner, it didn’t work, I went to take a look, and instead of offering help, the manager dismissed us rudely, saying, “I told you this wouldn’t work,” in a tone that felt condescending and cold. He told us we were “blocking the way” and walked off, leaving us confused and uncomfortable. We tried to speak with the manager to express our frustration and seek a respectful conversation, but he repeatedly avoided responsibility, cut us off, and showed no willingness to understand our perspective. At one point, he even walked away mid-discussion, saying he had other guests to attend to, leaving us waiting for nearly 10 minutes. What followed was one hour of back-and-forth where we simply asked for an acknowledgment of the miscommunication and his dismissive tone — not any compensation. Instead, he remained defensive, blamed us for the situation, and implied we were at fault. To make matters worse, he suggested we were trying to get a discount, saying, “We’re not giving you a comp or discount — at most, we can offer you a glass of wine,” which felt insulting and dismissive of our genuine concerns. Even after we firmly requested a written apology, the manager only agreed and admitted to forgetting to return our call. When we asked him to acknowledge his dismissive attitude, he added a vague statement about “both parties having tone issues,” continuing to avoid any real accountability for his behavior or the way he handled the situation. For a Michelin-star restaurant, we expected not only decent food, but also professionalism, courtesy, and basic respect. Unfortunately, what was meant to be a warm and celebratory evening turned into a stressful and emotionally exhausting experience. Throughout the exchange, we felt disrespected and unwelcome — particularly as Chinese guests — and couldn’t help but question whether there was an underlying bias. The manager's attitude left us feeling deeply offended, and we sincerely hope the restaurant reflects on how it treats its guests and handles concerns in the future. Thanks.
