Hog Island Oyster Co. never disappoints! I stopped in craving fresh oysters, and it delivered on every level. This location inside Oxbow Public Market is a perfect spot to grab a seat, relax, and enjoy some incredible seafood. We ordered a dozen Chelsea Gems, and they were outstanding -- clean, briny, and perfectly shucked. You can really taste the difference when they're this fresh. The Chelsea Gems had a beautiful balance of ocean salinity with a slightly sweet finish that kept us going back for the next one. I also had one of the most unbelievable Bloody Marys I've had in a long time. It was topped with Hog Island's famous Hog Wash -- that bright, vinegary mignonette with shallots and cilantro -- which added an amazing punch of flavor to the drink. It was a perfect match with the oysters. The vibe is classic waterfront energy -- lively but relaxed. It's the kind of place where you can take your time, lean into the experience and just enjoy good food done right. Service was friendly and efficient, even when busy. If you love oysters -- or think you might -- this is a must-stop. Fresh, simple, and consistently excellent.
Sat at the bar on a Sunday afternoon. Great selections of fresh oysters shucking in front of us. We ordered a mix plate of oysters and some smaller ones were my favorite, slightly sweet and not much aftertaste. Relatively fast service. Fried oysters were quite a good snack as well. Clam chowder was creamy and had ample amount of clams with shell attached. Great spot for a quick eat if visiting the oxbow market area.
Every year my boyfriend comes here for oysters and champagne. This summer I went with him. I wanted to sit at the bar, but it was crowded because it was the weekend. Still, we didn't have to wait long and were seated in 15 minutes. We tried 6 different kinds of oysters and added sweetwater, mirimichi, and dukes. If you are a beginner at eating oysters, I highly recommend the dukes. We ordered garlic fires and Burrata & Peaches together, and of the two, the Burrata & Peaches was delicious. The servers were friendly and the oyters were incredibly fresh. It is a little pricey for oysters from the market, but I still recommend it.
The hogs island oysters were delicious creamy and sweet. Totally recommend. Had the disco hama out of curiosity. Was pretty sweet nutty but had slight briny taste. So if you're not a fan of briny taste dont go for this one. Oyster shooter was delicious and same with clamp chowder. Totally recommend
Review for Hog Island Oyster Co. – Napa at the Market If you're in Napa and looking for a fun, casual spot to grab a quick and delicious bite, Hog Island Oyster Co. at the Oxbow Public Market is a must-visit! The atmosphere is lively and open, with that perfect bustling market energy that makes you feel like you're in the heart of something special. We tried both the hot and cold oysters, and every single one was mouth-watering. Fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented – truly some of the best oysters we've had. The standout of our visit was the exceptional service. Our server, Wes, was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. She walked us through the menu, made great recommendations, and helped us make our decisions with confidence. Her passion for oysters and hospitality really elevated the experience. Whether you're a seasoned oyster lover or just looking to try something new, Hog Island is a fantastic stop. Great food, great vibes, and great service – highly recommend!
Hog Island Oyster Co. is an absolute must-visit! We came during happy hour and couldn’t resist the special—12 oysters for just $30. What a steal for what turned out to be the best oysters I’ve ever had. Each one was unbelievably fresh, perfectly chilled, and bursting with flavor. You can truly taste the quality and care that goes into them. The atmosphere was lively yet relaxed, making it the perfect spot to enjoy oysters with a drink. I can’t recommend this place enough—if you’re an oyster lover (or even just curious to try), Hog Island will set the bar high. Fresh, flavorful, and simply unforgettable!
OMG Raw oysters on the half shell! Amaaaaaaazing! My friend had the fish tacos and I had the deep fried oyster Po Boy. All the food was excellent and the sauces really complemented the fish tacos and the fried oyster sandwich. 2nd time there. And it is only my 2nd time in Napa and this place made my list twice! 👍👍👍👍 if you love great seafood, this is the place to go.
Such an awesome lunch spot. Oysters were some of the best and biggest we’ve ever had, and sitting at the counter you get to see them shuck the oysters and prepare all the other menu items. A great spot to stop for lunch if you have the time. We ordered a mix of grilled and regular oysters - the grilled chipotle oyster was one of the best things I’ve tasted.
If you’re looking for fresh oysters this is your spot! We came here upon closing on a Saturday night located at the Oxbow public market and got seated at the bar. We originally came for restaurant month which includes 6 sweet water oysters, market salad, and half grilled cheese for $35 but they were out of the sandwiches. They didn’t have anything to substitute so we just went for the acme bread and butter, clam chowder, steamed mussels and clams and added pasta, and grilled oyster mix which came with 2 each of the flavored grill oysters. I was impressed with the clam chowder and the amount of clams in there that you have to work for but were really good! Paired well with a Pinot Gris. Our meal was about $60-$70 a person since we shared this. Service was quick, they have bar seating, some indoor, and some outdoor seating. There’s plenty of parking since they have a huge parking lot.
We ordered the clam fettuccine and the rustic seafood stew, and both were absolutely delicious. Honestly, this was one of the few meals during the trip that we were truly happy with. After eating here, the whole trip suddenly felt more enjoyable. Everything tasted fresh, well-balanced, and comforting—exactly what we needed at that point in the journey.
10/10! Came here during my birthday trip to Napa and was impressed. We ordered Rockefeller oysters, hog island clam chowder, and garlic fries. All the food was delicious. The clam chowder was very light and fresh, not heavy like most chowders which I liked. Excellent service. We sat outside and the patio was equipped with heaters. This is a must stop if you’re in the area!
After reading my review of Spud’s in Bodega Bay, Hog Island Oyster bar said “hold my clams and watch this…” THIS was by far the best clam chowder ever. Period. End of discussion. The oysters were good and very flavorful during happy hour. However, the clam chowder was overflowing with real, in the shell clams that were succulent, savory, and in a perfectly seasoned broth. I’ll most certainly ALWAYS order this when visiting Hog Island in the future.
Great spot inside Oxbow market. Great selection of oysters served grilled or raw. I had a unique Bloody Mary here, made with agave wine. Would recommend!
I let my guard down during happy hour. The oysters were of such high quality that I ended up eating way too many. I’m still satisfied overall, but they didn’t give me any water or bread. I’ll let it slide this time because the oysters were that good.
This was my first time dinning at Hog Island Oyster Bar. What a wonderful experience. We had the Clam chowder, Halibut poke and the Hog Island Sweetwater Oysters. The place was not crowded, and we did not have to wait to be seated. It had a nice atmosphere located in the Oxbow Public Market with a lot of little shops and bars surrounding it. The staff was attentive and quick to take our order. I will be going to this place again.
Phen-nom-enom! Fantastic! Super chilly windy day that did not stop the traffic from getting oysters for the day. Fresh caught right in site the farm is there. Everyone was so kind and helpful. The raw oysters served with mignonette and the grilled oysters with the chipy butter is a must! The bloody Mary I am always skeptical about, they had their Hogwash in and jalapenos, was perfect! It's a definite must stop along this gorgeous sceneic drive back to San Francisco
This oyster bar was the highlight of my Napa Valley trip. The seafood stew was absolutely mind-blowing; I still remember its amazing flavor. And the oysters were so fresh and delicious. Will definitely come back every time I visit the area.
Delicious, fresh seafood! I love the outdoor seating and being able to walk around in the Oxbow market. I ordered the poke, clam chowder and fresh oysters, such good quality. Also the heirloom tomato salad was amazing!
Oysters. I love oysters and Hog Island Oyster Co delivers. Consistantly great food. Friendly, helpful staff. The oyster pot pie's are back and in season. Tried the poke tacos. Fish, very fresh. Refreshing.
Loved the fresh shucked oysters. Prawn and grits was delicious! Great outdoor dining space.
4.7 amazing oysters, fresh, and unique in their own way (love the hama hama for sweetness) grilled oysters are fantastic! brilliant aroma, and still large in size after grilling (love the harissa sauce)
After many trips to public market, this was my first time eating at Hog Island Oyster Co. I ordered the raw Oyster Bar Mix, the Grilled Bar Mix and was given a complimentary dish of Gooey Duck Carpaccio with fresh grapefruits. The meal was absolutely superb and I will be coming back.
Wow! For starters the Market Greens salad was wonderful! Fresh and full of flavor. For the main course I had the Rustic Seafood Stew and it was served piping hot and brimming to the top of the bowl. So many succulent types of seafood in the tomato based stew, wonderful! Service was great and fast. Make it a stop for your meal!
A lively and friendly restaurant specializing in oysters and other seafood. There were several options of oysters in terms of size and region, but we found them quite similar. The po’boy, seafood stew, and accompanying dishes were quite satisfying. Beer and wine choices, outdoors seating, fast and friendly service — what more could you want? Recommended.
I ordered an Oyster Bar Mix. She explained each of them to me. Very friendly. The pickled veggies are great too.
Did we drive all the way here for lunch from Sacramento? Why yes, yes we did! Hands down, the BEST, freshest, tastiest oysters l've ever had. Pricey? Yes, but oh so worth every penny. On this occasion, we had a dozen and split it in half between the Hog Island Sweetwater and Hog Island Earthquake Bay oysters. The Sweetwaters have always been my favorite but the Earthquakes are now my new fave, they were seriously so fresh with the right amount of brine, texture and taste. The mignonette with a few drops of the Old Bay Seasoning hot sauce was chefs kiss! We also had a couple of Bloody Marys that really hit the spot. I also really love the clam chowder here. For those that are looking for a thick creamy chowder you find on the coast, this is not it. Their classic chowder is a thin yet slightly creamy deep rich broth. The richness comes from all the yummy fresh clams! The fresh potatoes, celery and bacon make it the perfect bowl of chowder. Service was great, the patio seating was lovely and they were doggie friendly. Perfect lunch all the way around!
If you're here for oysters you won't be disappointed: Plenty to choose from and very fresh. Plus other bigger dishes to help fill you up - the Shrimp & Grits were hearty, rich, and tasty. Service was fast and friendly. The place was bustling and located inside a food market, so it's great for catching up with friends but not so much for a quiet romantic dinner.
First time visiting and it did not disappoint, friendly staff, great food, drinks were good too. We'll definitely be coming back here!!
My recent visit to Hog Island Oyster Co. was nothing short of a coastal journey on the half shell. With a glass of crisp Arnica Albariño from St. Helena in hand, I sampled oysters from some of the finest waters in the United States—each one a distinct expression of its origin, yet all harmonizing beautifully with the wine. Starting from the right of the lemon and moving clockwise, here’s how the lineup impressed: 1. Tomales Bay, California (Hog Island Sweetwater) Classic West Coast flavor—briny, clean, with a touch of sweetness. A perfect benchmark oyster that paired elegantly with the Albariño's minerality. 2. Humboldt Bay, California Plump and buttery with a delicate cucumber finish. Slightly less briny than Tomales, these oysters had a creamy texture that danced with the wine’s acidity. 3. Eld Inlet, Washington A cool, deep-water oyster that brought a rich, earthy complexity. Notes of mushroom and umami gave this one depth. 4. Hood Canal, Washington Crisp and bracing with a snap of salinity, this oyster was refreshingly bold. 5. Topsail Island, North Carolina East Coast elegance—lightly salty, with a mineral-driven, clean profile. Slightly leaner than the Pacific oysters, it brought balance to the tasting flight and showcased how the Albariño’s stone fruit notes could elevate even a subtler bivalve.
We stopped by this place and had a great time shucking our own oysters — they were incredibly fresh and delicious! We even bought one of their oyster knives to make it easier, and it worked perfectly. The salesperson was super friendly and gave us great tips and suggestions. Definitely a fun and tasty stop for oyster lovers!
Was having bad day. We Got rear ended on the way to an event we was really looking forward to. Before dinner we went to this spot to enjoy some oysters. They were so good They literally turned our day around. We also had brussel sprouts and beets which was a first and really good. Definitely visiting this restaurant again.
Maybe the best clam chowder I've ever had? Top 5 at least. Service is ok. Other stuff on the menu is OK. Pricey but there isnt a better soup in Napa.
Perfectly shucked oysters, best I've ever had. I could write a poem about how good the Tuna Melt was. My fiancé had the fish tacos. Also the best she's had. If I had more time I would write a poem about our meal.
This Hog Island branch is outstanding in every way—truly the best of the best. Even when the staff seem exhausted, a little patience goes a long way. Portions and side pickles have become smaller since the pandemic, but we still love this place.
We stopped here for a quick bite before our late dinner reservation. We ordered the trio of grilled oysters and the beer, battered oysters. The service was nothing special. They were friendly, but not chatty at all. We sat at the oyster bar, which was a fun experience. There was some shell in the oysters that we had to spit out but the flavors were good. We had a nice time sitting, but we felt a little bit rushed at the end to make a note this place was not busy when we were there. I probably wouldn’t wait around for this restaurant but if they had seating open, I think it’s a fun stop.
The shrimp po-boy was great and I wish I ordered two of them! The bourbon chipotle oyster was also delicious. The oyster chowder was good but it could've been better. I wish it wasn't so acidic. It was more like a tomato soup than a chowder. Otherwise it was great and we enjoyed the atmosphere a lot!
Hog Island Oyster Co is a top recommendation, known for its fresh oysters and scenic locations. They have multiple locations, including this one at the Ferry Building in San Francisco. We came in the late afternoon and only two types of oysters were available. Their signature Hog Island Highwater and Sweetwater, both from different bays in the CA Pacific. We found them both briny-salty with the Highwater providing more texture than the Sweetwater. The Sweetwater has an earthy, smoky finish. Those that sit outside the oyster bar can take oysters to go and bring their favorite wine, beer or beverage to the Ferry building. Some even take them across the river and picnic, either way, Hog Island Oyster Co shucks some tasty oysters.
It really isn’t bad and I can never complain about fresh grilled oysters, but this is not the same as the one in SF. The linguine and pasta are both so watery I don’t know if it’s soup or pasta. The mussels are not that big and the soup almost flavorless with just a taste of lemon, and the added pasta has absolutely no flavor making it worse. The bread & butter were cold plain baguettes from Acme and the waitress was like, oh no we do not heat them up. They also only have 3 cocktails including an oyster shooter. It’s wine country sure but really? A bit disappointing since I absolutely love the one in the city.
Had a nice dinner in Napa tonight. Ordered half a dozen mix oyster, were delicious, also had the clam chowder. Very filling. We also had the seafood stew that was delicious, the fries and salads were great. A great place to stop and eat. The view of the river is amazing from their patio.
While I've previously dined at Hog Island Oyster Co in Marshall and the restaurant inside the Ferry Building, this review pertains explicitly to the smaller location inside Oxbow. During my visit to Napa, I had been eager to stop by for lunch. Arriving around 11 AM, a half-hour before its 11:30 AM opening on Friday, I stood in line waiting for it to open. Once opened, I requested a bar sitting, where a friendly server promptly greeted me. I opted for their mixed plate of grilled oysters, which were genuinely excellent, featuring a delightful variety of seasonings. Given my fondness for clams, I ordered the steamed clams with pasta for an additional two dollars. Regrettably, the clam dish with pasta was disappointingly bland, lacking the desired depth of flavor and requiring some added salt. It came across as watery both in taste and appearance. Having previously enjoyed their clam chowder, this experience was somewhat lacking. I took most of the steamed clam dish home to improve its flavor as leftovers. Despite having visited their other locations more than two dozen times and typically leaving impressed, this was the first instance where I didn't leave thoroughly content. However, I'm willing to consider it a one-time incident, and I look forward to returning to savor more of their grilled oysters and other menu offerings during my frequent visits to Napa. I've given this review a four-star rating primarily for the friendly service, the delicious grilled oysters, and the authentic experience Hog Island Oyster Co. typically offers. If you haven't had the chance to visit Oxbow, it's a vibrant and lively destination, perfect for exploring a wide array of artisanal dishes, ranging from empanadas and coffee to cheeses, spices, cupcakes, and much more. On weekends, it's abuzz with activity, creating a festive atmosphere, and there are ample large parking lots nearby for everyone's convenience.
Ordered cream chowder and mix grilled oysters. Mix grilled oysters are impressive especially the one in red sauce. Very mild spice with refreshing lemon scent. No fishy smell at all for any of the oysters. Cream chowder was full of clams but a bit salty for me. Highly recommend to sear outdoor to enjoy the river view while enjoy the food
Had the lobster mac'n'cheese, and the wife had the mussels. The wife said the mussels were good. I thought the mac'n'cheese was watery. The wait service was attentive and cordial. However, it was more expensive than Angèle's, and Angèles was gourmet prepared food with a fine dining wait service.
Service was good, and the Shrimp Sandwich was good shrimp were fresh, Clam Chowder was watery, lacked flavor, and had more clam shells than clam meat, the Fries were saturated with Old Bay seasoning and salt. We had grilled oysters which were alright. I have had better. Overall Hog Island is not a place I would visit again.
Stone Soup, Anyone? I came to this place on a New Year Eve's trip as it was highly recommended by friends. The service was a bit cold and cursory, which we overlooked because the place was packed and very busy. Then came our appetizer of mixed grilled oysters--several of which were very gritty and we spit more time picking shell out of our mouths instead of enjoying the flavors. And then my Manhattan chowder came which was very tasty until...I found a ROCK in it. Luckily I didn't chip my tooth on it (or choke ) but along with the gritty oysters it just proved that either a: the kitchen staff was moving too fast or b: the kitchen staff doesn't care. But worse than the dirty food itself was the manager's reaction to it when I pointed it out to her. Rather than apologize, she defensively explained that they do a "thorough" job of washing and sorting but sometimes rocks get through because "as you can see" it looks just like a clam. Full stop. Manager: Would you like another bowl? Me: Um, no. And then she said she would take my uneaten (dangerous) chowder off the bill--which of COURSE she should have done--and acted like she was doing me a huge favor. No profuse apologies, no shock about the egregious error, no concern about my well being or not having an entree. The manager's response was the equivalent of a verbal shrug. So, unless you like eating Stone Soup (just like the fairy tale!) and gritty oysters, steer clear.
While the oysters were fresh, and the service was great, both my friend and I got severely ill after eating here. Along with oysters, we also ordered clam chowder. Because the oysters were so fresh, we are sure that the illness did not come from those, but rather the chowder. Even though everything was delicious, we can not help but suspect that the seafood used in the chowders may have been passed the date for consumption. I will not be dining at this particular location ever again.
