We went on a Monday for lunch to celebrate being named employee of the month at work. The food is delicious with generous portions. There are New Orleans and steakhouse influences on the menu with a BBQ Shrimp inspired Shrimp 'n Grits appetizer. The onion rings are "chicken-fried" and came out in a huge stack and served with a zesty sauce. The lunch menu offers a daily meat-and-two offering and the Monday special is fried porkchop which was very delicious and a good portion for lunch. The blackened fish sandwich was blackened nicely and the slaw paired nicely. Since we were celebrating, dessert was a must. The brownie was HUGE, fudge, and served warm with pecan ice cream. Our server did a great job and overall we had a great meal, we'll definitely return.

Very nice and quaint. We had dinning reservations but went early for drinks. The bartenders were so friendly and attentive that we stayed at the bar for dinner. I love this restaurant. Both the food and drinks were amazing. I recommend this restaurant.

First time here and we loved it. It was our first date of the year. Very nice atmosphere. Waiter was awesome and very friendly. I ordered sea bass and she had red fish plus sides and dessert (pecan pie w/ice cream). All of it was amazing and delicious. Will definitely come back.

A wonderful lunch or dinner option in the Green Hills area. The menu is reasonably priced and the dessert portions are enough to share. There's a pianist that plays in the evening in the bar area with the music carrying throughout the dining areas. My server Ari was attentive throughout the meal which added to the dining experience. My one suggestion would be that the blueberry bread pudding be served hotter to account for how congealed it is.

We went to Char for brunch on Sunday. There was a nice little jazz trio playing in the bar area and it really sets the mood. The waiter made a few suggestions and we ordered our appetizers. We got the crab claws and the bbq shrimp. The crab claws were delicious and while the shrimp isn’t traditional New Orleans BBQ shrimp, they were still very tasty. The mains were all very good and the pecan pie dessert was the perfect ending to a great meal. My only criticism is my steak was over cooked but it was tasty enough even though it was well done instead of medium rare like I ordered.

Walked in for a late dinner with no reservation. Not sure what to expect. Worth the 20/30 min wait. Angie our server was wonderful. Drinks, appetizer Crab Cakes and our main dishes were delicious. I had the Sea Bass and my husband had Duck. Would highly recommend. Neither of us were in the mood for steak but we will be back!

Excellent fine dining, with good soups including the Crab, Shrimp and Andouille Gumbo, spicy and delicious. The appetizers were very good. The PEI Mussels were some of the best we’ve had and the Tomato Basil is worth soaking up with the toasted baguette. The crab claws were tiny, but you get a lot of them. Very tasty. The large, full bar and extensive wine list, complement the dimly lit steakhouse atmosphere. Service by Olivia was excellent, though there was a wait for the excellent Double-cut Fudge Brownie.

So I booked a table for 2 and let me tell you this is a great steakhouse!!! Our server Cedric was awesome, even his jokes! Can’t complain when it comes to great steaks and service. If you’re in the area stop by for some live piano and an all around great place!!!

We flew in with a reservation at Char. We waited for a table to be ready and grabbed drinks in the bar as we listened to live piano. I marked just 4 stars for atmosphere - the main room seems cavernous and could use more appeal. They have booths as well as tables (and several large groups were there). There is another room, but I was unable to observe. We shared a dinner, and the food was absolutely wonderful. Save room for desert - the praline ice cream is wonderful! They have a selection of wines, and don't forget the port with your dessert. Parking wasn't obvious to us as we pulled up. I believe they have some valet or garage parking - might want to check in to that. We parked across the street and did not get towed. We would definitely visit again if we were in the area!

If you like a creole flavor and can't make it to Nola just on a whim, definitely come here! Orange Beach has the crab claws, and so does Char. I was surprised how close they emulate the gulf yet still have a normal menu. You won't go wrong getting the BBQ shrimp, not exactly like Nola, but very, very tasty in its own right. Red fish your thing? Try it here, another great dish. The mac and cheese was the best restaurant version I've ever had. Prices are great for the quality and quantity. We will definitely be back and tell our friends.

My friend called and suggested we eat here and it did not disappoint! We had the Onion Rings and Crab Cakes as an appetizer and they were equally amazing! My friend had the prime New York strip, which he let us taste, and his wife had one of the salads (can’t remember which one). My wife and I had the Seabass with jasmine rice, shishito peppers and grilled baby bok choy…I ended up tasting all the dishes and they were all on point. My friend says he’s never had a bad dish here, and I can believe it!

I was debating between the steak frites and blue and black salad. I decided to be good and go with the salad but as the steak frite walked by to another table, I longed for some of those truffle fries. Anyway, my salad was delicious. The steak was super tender. I also had a delicious ghost pepper margarita. It was crazy spicy or anything but it had a delicious taste. I had an issue with my salad and they corrected it quickly. Excellent customer service, excellent restaurant. Obviously I must return for the steak frite.

We went here for my birthday this year at the beginning of July and we have a great time!!! We also took advantage of the nice mirrors in the bathroom for a mini photo shoot!!! I had the crab cakes that were fabulous and a pineapple mimosa!!! I would definitely suggest this place for brunch as they have a great variety on their menu and there were no complaints at the table about any dish ordered. We all ordered something different but only two were drinking and we both ordered the pineapple mimosa so I can't comment any further about the drinks. I will definitely be back to try their dinner menu and listen to more of the live band. They have a live band!!! Enjoy

Cindy was the most friendly waitress and suggested the lobster claws for an appetizer; they were buttery and delicious. My husband had the Ribeye and I had the Filet. We both agreed the way the chef prepares the meat was exceptional! Best steak we’ve ever had and we have had!

Our server Angie F was amazing and so funny! She gave the best experience. Food was amazing, we always go to Char for any special occasion. It’s our favorite spot!

Great brunch spot! The spinach Flatbread and crab cake starters were phenomenal! But I need to dedicate a couple of sentences to the black eyes pea soup...DELISH!!!!! Amazing flavor! The crawfish, lump crab and sausage cheese grits are everything. I added frite steak and it was a WRAP! The brownie is so rich and tasty!!!! I can't wait to come back. The service is great. Valet is available. Trendy intimate space for a date or social gathering.

The food here is amazing! The service was great too. The salmon, steak salad, and drinks were on point. Loved the atmosphere. There was even a live pianist which enhanced the mood. Great place for date night or to celebrate something special.

This is a great spot, quiet, excellent staff, and a very creative take on several Southern and other classics. We are not in Green Hills often, but whenever we are this is a top favorite. The relatively new patio layout offers nice outdoor seating in good weather. The bar is always good vibes, but especially when the piano is being played.

You'll spend top dollar here, but it's well worth it! My wife had the ribeye steak and I had the pork chop. Both were fantastic! Perfectly cooked and soooo good! We finished it off with their pecan pie. Probably the best pecan pie I ever had!

Olivia was a lovely waitress. She was attentive, kind, helpful and didn’t rush us. We arrived at 9:30 knowing the restaurant closed at 10. Andy, the manager, made sure to let us know we were welcome and graciously sat us at a booth. Such a nice greeting after being on the road for hours. Salmon and spinach salad were delicious.

Last night my Foodie Buddy and I went to Char Restaurant. when we entered we were warmly greeted and seated immediately. The menu offers a variety of dishes that include some Cajun flavors along with an interesting mix of ingredients. We started with a couple of beers from Grayton Beer Company called 30A Beach Blonde Ale. This is a slightly sweet Ale but very crisp and refreshing, I will be searching for a six-pack of this beer for the weekend! When asked if you would like bread…say yes. The warm baguette with soft butter is really good! Appetizer: There’s a lot to choose from here and you could design a meal just around appetizers. We shared an order of Crab Claws and I must say TOP 5 of appetizers I have enjoyed! You can get them fried or sautéed or a mix which is what we ordered. Now the fried are good…but the sautéed are incredible so I would recommend ALL sautéed. Don’t be shy…scoop some of the seasoning on the little claw and enjoy. You’ll get a slight amount of heat, but the combination of seasonings with the oil is exquisite. While the rest of dinner was exceptional, I could have done a couple of orders of these with a beer and considered Char to be Heaven on Earth when it comes to appetizers! Dinner: We selected the Tuna Nicoise…a salad that has crisp baby greens, PERFECTLY seared Ahi Tuna, artichoke hearts, tomato, egg, haricot verts, capers, with a honey white balsamic dressing. OK…it’s a salad BUT hands down the BEST salad I have ever enjoyed. The Ahi Tuna filets could have been a meal all to themselves they were that good! The 8oz Filet with a green peppercorn sauce, jumbo lump crab cake, and a loaded baked potato was so darn good. The steak was cooked perfectly and the seared butter crust helped this steak to melt in your mouth. Adding a dollop of the green peppercorn sauce really put this steak over the top and is highly recommended. The crab cake didn’t have a bunch of fillers, mayo, seasoning, or sauces…just pure jumbo crab meat with some herbs and a drizzle of lemon tarragon butter. This was one of the best crab cakes I have had in a very long time and it paired well with the steak! Unfortunately there was no room for dessert but they have some yummy looking offerings. Service was impeccable and overall cost to the enjoyment of the meal…well worth the price of admission!

Great place, different ambient. Piano playing live while you enjoy your med-rare steak is a must.. I recommend shooting for steak frites as a first visit. ( steak to your liking, med- rare is a MUST, wouldn’t want to commit a blasphemy chewing on well done rubber, accompanied by fries topped w/ Parmesan, órgano & truffle sauce) Wife went with the Shrimp Carbonara, and it did not have a single flaw in it. I tend to start my palate with desert. - House made pecan pie, might be too sweet for some. My choice Aperol Negroni. Now if you want something apart from the norm menu & are in town for a momento, ask for the Seasonal Menu, they have currently rack of Elk, you’ll thank me later!

My first time eating here. The food was amazing and our server was above and beyond she had plenty of little jokes to make us laugh and had great recommendations on menu items.

Our first visit to this new Green Hills restaurant was fantastic. The love piano music and decor are lovely and the menu is outstanding. I had a wonderful cocktail and we loved everything they served us. The no filler crabcakes were amazing. One of them fell apart when they set the plate down and they offered to go get another one...as if it was ruined. The hazards of no breading. ;) We will definitely visit again!

This place far exceeded expectations! We sat at the bar. Nicely decorated with piano music in the back ground. "Dressy Casual" was on point for the bar area and restaurant. Staff was incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable. My wife had the red fish and I had the steak frites with truffle fries. Dinner was a little pricey but was perfect for what you paid given the portions and level of service. We will definitely go back multiple times!!!

Amazing food, amazing service! My favorite for the night was the sautéed crab claws, Gumbo, and corn bread crusted red fish. My wife's seabass was a close second though- we can't wait to come back soon!! :) fyi. There brunch on weekends is excellent 👌

A

I had the red fish and it was an absolutely amazing dish, I can’t believe this was my first time there I’ll definitely be back. The portion was a good size to fill you up not like some of those fancy restaurants that you end up paying an arm and a leg and have to eat the bread to walk out full.

Always a TEN out of TEN (food, service and atmosphere), however, we have been lucky enough to have service provided by Ari on several visits, and she elevates it beyond perfection! Friendly, remembers us, and handles the entire bar area attentively, with organization and good vibes. Love you, Ari! Thanks for making our day

Great place! Went here for lunch but would probably prefer to come for dinner for more menu options. Parking was easy once you find it, they also offer valet. Loved the live music.

This is one of the best restaurants in the Nashville area. Green Hills is always busy, so traffic can be overwhelming, but it’s so worth it. We’ve dined here a few times and from the food to the service it is exceptional. We have had Ari the past two times and she is extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. She recommenced the scallops to my fiancee and they are AMAZING! My steak has been cooked perfectly every single time we have come and the taste is immaculate. I will always come back. Also, get the BBQ shrimp and grits. You won’t be disappointed I PROMISE.

We went for a Valentine’s Day dinner at 6:45. The service was excellent and so was the food. We ordered the pork chop and seafood pasta. We will be back.

Char has a very upscale vibe. We enjoyed our Sunday afternoon lunch in a booth closer to the front of the restaurant. There is plenty of room for larger parties. Our waitress was very straight forward and to the point. Very efficient with very little explanation of the menu. It was my first visit. I had the Steak Frites prepared medium, however they came out well done and the fries were lukewarm and limp. The Char Burger that my friend ordered was VERY GOOD and cooked perfect Our waitress was very apologetic and really made every effort to make things right. The manager stopped by and apologized as well. We were offered dessert, the House-Made Pecan Pie which was absolutely magnificent. The 3 stars for the food was based on my meal, however I gave 4 stars overall. I will definitely give Char Restaurant another try.

R

I would give them a very solid 4.5. Our server was a Five. Very friendly and attentive but we also came for an early dinner so there weren't many patrons in the dining area. Pork rinds were yummy. The Farm duck was also good but we were expecting some crunch on the breast. Steak Frites were cooked at medium rare and tasted well seasoned. I wasn't a big fan of the fries though. Please note right now I am a tougher critic as I am pregnant. Parking validation was easy but man the spots themselves in the parking lot were tight. (Not at all the restaurant's fault though.) All in all my husband and I will be back to try a proper steak.

Nice restaurant with great options for seafood and steak. Our Server Lee was great and very professional. Steak was fantastic, I recommend Medium or Medium Rare. The fries went very well with the steak and did not taste overly like Truffle. Fried Chicken was OK, I do not recommend buying it and instead get the steak. The sides are very solid, pretty much any of them will be satisfactory and complement the entrees.

I visited Char with my husband on New Year’s Day for his birthday. Parking was validated and we were sat pretty quickly. It took our waiter a while to visit our table but when he did he was very polite. I marked off on service just due to timing. We had crab claws and onion rings as appetizers. Both were great. The onion rings had a nice even batter, crunchy, and lightly salted. I couldn’t decide on fried or sautéed crab claws so tried 50/50. Both ways were good but I think my favorite was the sautee. The batter on the fried was simple and did not take away from the crab flavor. My husband had lamb chops and garlic mash for his entree. He enjoyed both but did mention the lamb chops did not have the same temperature, making one taste more gamey than the other. The garlic mash lacked garlic flavor. I had the loaded potato and ribeye. The potato was cooked to perfection. The ribeye has a perfect sear but could have used a little more seasoning. I did notice fruit flies or gnats in the dining area which resulted in the occasional swatting. Overall, we did have a good time and thought it was so thoughtful that a birthday card was waiting at our table

Great atmosphere, great bar, piano player. Sat on patio. Perfect service. This place is not understaffed like everywhere else The crab claws appetizer was addictive. Got 'em sauteed. Can't just have one. Worse than popcorn. So good Wedge salad was huge and nicely presented Pork chop was excellent with crispy broccolini. Fish sandwich was good too Great wine list with some different and interesting reds. Thank you for a nice meal

First time eating here, we had made reservations for after the Preds game. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant has a very unique atmosphere. We were pretty early and seated right away and promptly waited on. We ordered the fried crab legs and they were delicious, just as good as the ones we get in Panama City Beach. I ordered the Char Burger, wife ordered the crab cakes and the kids both ordered shrimps and grits. My burger and fries were delicious, the fries were natural cut fries and cooked perfectly. Wife said the crab cakes were really good and the kids said the shrimp and grits were delicious but they were much spicier than expected based on what the waitress said but they were delicious. I find spicy to be very relative and it really varies per everyone you ask. The waitress forgot to put our order in for some sides, which ultimately was fine because we had plenty. What I really appreciated is that she was honest and simply said she was so sorry and she's better than that but just got sidetracked. She comped us a dessert which we got the double chocolate brownie, and it was amazing! People make mistakes and I'm totally ok with that, it's how they handle/fix them that I have issues, or in this case, no issue with. She owned it, apologized, and quickly offered something to make amends and we were totally fine with that. Thanks for a great first impression and we will be back!

Hubby surprised me with reservations for Mother's Day and it was our first time. We had good service, food and drinks. We ordered pork rinds, salmon, chicken tenders, and steak frittes. We had the pecan crunch for dessert and everything was delicious.

The atmosphere was good, the server was amazing and the food was very good. I was not wowed, but it was a very nice experience. I had the Tuna Vicoise and the tuna was melt in your mouth. My husband had the pork chop and he loved it. This was a friend's choice for a dinner party and they easily accommodated our large group with ease.

Sautéed crab claws are very good! This was to be a medium rare cut which I would go for rare next time around. Fried okra was also very good. Service was excellent! Lots of Green Hills traffic to watch while you eat.

Pretty solid steak house. We got the cowboy ribeye and roasted chicken, both cooked and seasoned perfectly. Server, didn't get her name but was supper friendly and attentive. Drinks were good and strong.

Went for lunch to celebrate a significant work anniversary. Service was terrific! Food was fine. I've heard such good things about Char, so perhaps my expectations were too high. I ordered steak frites, the fries were covered in garlic, and the steak had very little seasoning. One coworker ordered grilled chicken tenders, and the portion was quite small. Everything was properly cooked, but under seasoned.

I’ve hesitated and debated with myself if I should leave this review, but I decided to write it so no one else will have the sting that I got when I received my bill. I met a friend there last Sunday evening for a much needed getaway. She ordered the crab claws and I ordered the shrimp and grits and I ordered a glass of white Chardonnay. The waiter ask if I wanted a 6 or 9 oz glass and I stated 9 oz. The atmosphere was nice, the staff were friendly and food was fantastic and the wine was delicious. This experience made me feel so much better until received my bill and discovered that a 9oz glass of wine cost me $28 bucks!!!! I was shocked about the cost, and ask the waiter if it was an error; he confirmed the price. May I add this was not top shelf wine! I paid the over 50 dollar bill because I enjoyed my meal. I think I should have been made aware of the different wine selections by the wait staff , but I take ownership also, never order wine without asking price! This was a first since i eat at upscale restaurants often but have never paid $28 for a 9 oz glass of wine. Will I go again! Sure, but will not Order the wine!

I don't know what has happened lately, but I just had one of the worst meals, and my last meal wasn't their usual quality either. They've always been hit or miss when I would get To Go orders, so I knew I was taking a chance. But, the fries on my Steak Frites were hard as a rock, and the steaks were very bland. I couldn't eat most of it, which is really disappointing. Hope they get back to their usual high standards.

M
Mark Tacchi

Not fit for foodies. This was my first time here but the food situation wasn't anywhere where it needs to compete with what's coming to Nashville. I'd even say the steak is on par with Outback Steakhouse... Which isn't that bad but I thought Char would have been better. The $25 crab cakes were flat out gross (really really awful). Pasta sides were way over cooked. Brocolli was actually nicely done with a little crunch and nice seasoning. They seem to do a good job with the fried food (onion rings). You guys do a good job with Etch, try harder at Char or you'll get eaten alive. And one last thing, be more welcoming at the front door for god's sake....at least pretend you're happy to see me.

E
Ed Perry

First time eating here and was not impressed at all!! We took my brother here for his 48th birthday and that was our first mistake, we shoukd have taken him to Perry's where there is a much higher calliber of service required to be a server and food standards. Our server was terriable he was very unorginized dropped off bread after we had been sitting for over 15min,did not keep our dinks filled at all we had to constanly ask his coworkers for refills it just seemed to me because of our party size and he was getting auto gratuity added to the bill he did not care if he was giving bad service. Then there was the kitchen they got 2 orders wrong which took a long time to get fixed and most of the table was done eating befor errors were corrected and delivered.
