Opinions de Phoenix Saloon New Braunfels
We tried this place as a unique restaurant in town. We ate lots of sides as a meal--but were disappointed they had run out of corn bread! Friendly staff--we ate outside in crazy heat and they were still attentive. More of a place for drinking and live music, but still able to enjoy a late lunch.
Old town western bar. Lots of wood, mirrors, history, drinks, food and music. The bartender took time to give us the interesting history, including the reason it is said to be haunted.
Thank you to the kind bartender who made me and my future husband drinks and allowed us to take a few engagement photos here. Best service hands down! And the drinks were yummy! Also this place has amazing vibes.
My dining companion and I had a tasty meal here prior to going to a show at the Brauntex Theater down the street. I had the Blue Burger which was grilled perfectly and topped with a creamy blue cheese sauce. My companion had the chili which was also excellent. It's an old-style saloon with a walk-up bar and a number of tables. Drinks and food reasonably priced. Jukebox music during the day, bands or karaoke in the evening. Recommended.
Best chili & bartenders during our visit to the area this past weekend. We enjoyed the old school atmosphere, & the history lesson on the building that the brunette bartender gave us. Such an interesting place. She was very knowledgeable on everything, & my only regret was not getting her name to call her out on a proper review!
Since the reopening in January, there seems to be a night and day difference at this bar. The drinks are on point. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and quick (even when busy). I'd recommend it to anybody visiting New Braunfels at this point.
Quaint and rustic "birthplace of chili powder." lots of local beers on tap and a decent selection of spirits. I love their chili infused "white shirt" Burger on the jalapeno bun but you can't go wrong with the chili. Make sure to get a side of sweet potato fries! The ladies behind the bar are sweet and always take care of us well whether I am alone or in a group. They always have some local band dialed up for some great music and will bring in big names on the weekends.
Very good food for a bar, especially love the burgers. Great selection of drinks, and they make a decent old fashioned. Some of the staff could be a little friendlier, but it's not enough to knock off a star, just don't expect smiles or small talk.
Had a great bowl of Chili and a Hamburger today. Highly recommend everyone visiting for food and cold beer. They are deep rooted in New Braunfels history.
Raven was our bartender & she was amazing. They were really busy, but she remembered our drinks while being attentive. We will definitely go back thanks to her and her positive attitude.
Friday this was on point. The burger was really good prepared correctly. The bartender and bus boy were very quick. The drinks were cold. Love the music always like coming here for my day drink thank you.
Great live music. Good strong drinks and friendly bar staff. Delicious food! Fried pickles are yummy and the BLT is classically delicious. Small outdoor seating area for dogs etc. Good ambiance. I'll be back!
This was a super cool spot to check out. Made you feel like you were back in the late 1800s, and had a cool setup acoustic guitar playing some various country favorites. Recommend stopping for a drink!
There were nine of us and we received excellent customer service! Bailey was patient with all our questions, she was polite, friendly and professional. Food was delicious! Will definitely return.
Bartender was very friendly, and the tap selection is great. The burger was ok, as it needed more seasoning but was cooked well. The chili had a good flavor and kick, but it and the corn bread came out stone cold from the kitchen. I would return to see the night activities in this cool, old building. Seems like a good place to get drinks and hang out.
Best chili I ever had. Not gonna lie. No burger here. 100% sirloin and 100% to die for. It's your typical dive bar but oh boy was that chili tasty. Toppings are extra but worth it. I'm not and extremely hot type of guy but the double shot had the right amount of heat. Not too little and not too much. A must stop every time I'm in the area.
The BEST place in TOWN!! What an amazing time we had from meeting new friends and a table full of people to a cover band that did the MOST AMAZING MUSICAL EXPERIENCE BY 3 MAN BAND OR 3MF... WHEN I SAY SEARCH THEM OUT AND THIS BAR... I LITERALLY MEAN, RUN, GO NOW! AMAZING PRICES. CROWD IS SO FRIENDLY! DEF MAKING THIS A HANG OUT WHEN WE VISIT AND WILL BE BACK JUST FOR THIS PLACE AND OUR FRIENDS!!!! We closed it down and wanted MORE!!!! BEST PLACE IN TOWN!!!!
Great place, music many days: lunch, evening & night shows! Good food!! Got out of there, sm.Chili bowl $6, with BIG piece of cornbread! Mmm🤪 Locals love and so did I!!! Saw @Tony-Taylor-98 [venmo], on Facebook, every Fri.Noon to 2pm. Wed. lunch show too by regular musician.
Live music was making the old ladies panties drop tonight. Cover band was fire! People were dancing on the street as they passed the Phoenix. Service is prompt and the food is delicious, especially the chili dog. Come into Phoenix and make your night amazing with Sadie, Angel, Brandi, and Bailey!
This place has awesome hamburgers! These juicy burgers were packed with flavor. The sweet potato fries served with a creamy blue cheese dipping sauce completed the dish with perfection. I am looking forward to eating another one soon. The staff was real attentive and was a great place to relax on a Saturday night listening to live music.
Bar has great deals and really enjoy the open guitar night on Thursdays! Everyone is very friendly and encouraging about getting up on stage and playing/singing
Exceptional chili with a good burn. I had the two shot and that was just the right level for me. The cornbread helps out for sure. Solid selection of Texas beers, including local brews. While I was here, Seguin Brewing co. was running a deal where anyone who bought a glass of their brew (9 Pin or Bock & Rohl) they had a nice commemorative glass for you to take home. I also saw a couple stages for live music, so if that's your thing then this is your spot to spend a fine evening after a wet and wild day at Schlitterbahn.
This is a great place! I've been there manyvtimes. Great food, drinks bartenders and music! What more can I say?
My wife is a travel nurse and we are in New Braunfels for a few months. We always seek out a bar that’s not a chain and found Phoenix Saloon. We had tried another local bar around that area but had a less-than-pleasant experience. As soon as we walked into Phoenix, it just felt right. Our bartender (Amanda?) was quick, professional, and friendly. My wife ordered the vegetarian chili and said it was amazing. I ordered the fried pickles and they were quite good as well. I enjoyed the old-school baseball game and it only cost a quarter per game! Every time we’ve been back has been a great time. Definitely recommend.
The New Braunfels Pin Ups (Mid-century Ma-Rockers) and The Prairie Rattlers, made the ground at Phoenix Saloon shake, like a big rattle snake! Bailey was an amazing bartender, and the rest of the staff was awesome as well! The fried pickles here are absolutely to die for! The atmosphere is very laid back and fun. Oh, and I freaking LOVE the large full scale mirror in the women's restroom!!
Cool old place, interesting history. Went on a Thursday night, it was open mic night, great to hear several people get out there on the stage and share their voice. They were all awesome. There was only one bartender, she did all the waitressing, she held down that fort and did an awesome job!
Love the live music! This place feels like a classic New Braunfels spot with tons of character and history.
I go to the Phoenix almost every Thursday for open mic night. The open mic host, Bobby, is always so friendly and interesting to talk to. On my 1st visit a few months ago, he introduced me to the manager and staff and I ordered the chili and a second veggie chili to taste. I was impressed and surprised by how flavorful both were! I’m extremely picky about my chili, having traveled domestically and abroad. It was delicious! I didn’t try the cornbread, but I definitely will the next time I go. I really like their live music talent, as well! I own a radio station and am always impressed when a venue knows how to select the appropriate artist for their establishment. I’ve seen local talent George Marsh perform a few times and he’s a perfect fit for the Phoenix. Good service and extremely friendly bar staff, combined with delicious Texas chili and local artists and musicians make The Phoenix a must visit any time I’m in New Braunfels!
Amazing bar = 10/10 service and staff are top tier super friendly and helpful 👌 Massive selection of drinks on tap and hand made, the chilli is next too perfect atm! Which is rare! Always good music playing and an amazing vibe if your in NB local or visiting its a must
Their chilli is always delicious. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The vibe is mellow during day and lively at night. Gives you old saloon vibes. Love it.
Braven is amazing! We came in to watch our daughter perform on Sunday afternoon. It was packed! This fantastic woman was bartending, running food, serving the whole bar AND restaurant with only one cook! And she never missed a beat! Been here before but had to give a shout out! It was a great experience! Try the chili with all the add ons!
The Phoenix Saloon is a super-cool, laid back spot. Truly a historic place. Local live music most nights and even during the day at times. The bar upstairs is great for big parties and music, but if you want more intimate fun vibes, the Tiki Bar downstairs is where it's at. Definitely check it out if you're in town! We just boozed it up and didn't eat, so I can't rate the food. Next time I'm definitely getting chili!
Interesting spot with a great history. Look it up before you go (first legal female alcohol service in TX and American chili powder first created here). There’s no longer a secret or hidden garden but you can still figure out where it was located. The jukebox selection is to die for and the history that piece could share would be fabulous to experience. Was able to find a vegetarian menu item too. We went during the day and you needed to go to the bar to order your food and drinks but all of the workers were polite and helpful. They also have live music on a very regular basis. Check out their social media for more details.
We rolled through a couple of weeks ago and were not disappointed. First rate service, delicious food, laidback ambience, and the building and decor were wonderfully historic. We had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. Crisp and savory! The burgers were AMAZING! Hats off to the chef! 🫡
This was a walk back into history, it's really reminiscent of a old time restaurant that has an old-time west bar in it. They got a couple of stages in there for live music. The food has a fairly small menu, but the burgers were incredible. As were the chili, It was something about the fries in the Chili covered fries that I don't know, did not love. But she loved it. So it's probably just me, but everything else was perfect. And Angel S waited on us and was absolutely, just as fun and cool as she could be AND very knowledgeable. Go read the history. The original Phoenix saloon. Was there in 1894 and is said to not only be the first in Texas to offer Bar service to women, but also they invented chili powder.!!!!! Prior to that, chili's had only been used fresh.. Angel and we had a good talk, give it a try. Right in the middle of downtown New Braunfels.. not far from the oldest Bakery in Texas ... wow.
I've been looking for a no frills, just plain good burger, and I found it. Cooked perfectly and seasoned well. They had a good selection of draft beer and welcoming prices on the whiskey... just what I needed after a long weekend of working. I'll be back! Update.... Came in 10 minutes before close like an A-Hole and they still served me with the most politeness and professionalism. Love that. Thank you all!
Went ahead of a visit to the Redbird Listening Room and were running close on time. Only a couple of bartenders serving at the bar, but also tables between the stages. No one to greet at the door or to take orders at tables. After a while, one of us went up to ask if we had to order at the bar. Then one of the bartenders came out. Food was good, though coming from out of town and having looked it up ahead of time, the chili was tasty but had zero garnish at all, unlike images in the website gallery. Just a bowl of red and nothing else. Nothing was asked for other than what shot level you wanted, which unlike the web menu image is not even on the printed menu at the tables.
Cool place just wasn't that busy while we were there. Live music nights would be a good time to go
Came in in the early afternoon! This was one of those on my bucket list. Take note....have the chili! So good! I had a burger and a side of chili and was pretty impressed. They have only a small whiskey list but still good. Service was good, food was hot and fresh, and the live music places it in a whole new level.
Cool little place. Great chili live music. I think daily. Good tap wall staff friendly and efficient.
My first time at the Phoenix Saloon and it was a good one, for a second I was a bit confused but a friendly bartender educated me that there is no table service since they don't employ a wait staff. You order everything at the bar but they do bring your order out to your table or wherever you sitting. I saw a couple outside and they took their food to them which I thought was nice, I will have to remember that next time I'm in town and when the weather cools down a bit. Food was great, best Chili Dog I have eaten and the sweet potato wedges (I don't think I've had fries quite this good) were amazing especially with some dipping sauce they recommended. They have a good selection of draft beer and from what I could tell a good selection of liquor so you should be able to get anything a full service bar can offer. Anyway, my overall experience was a good one and I will recommend this place to my friends when they come to town.
Great atmosphere in old historic downtown Building. Live music, good food, and friendly service. The chili dog, fries, and deep fried pickles were delicious, and the craft beer was ice cold and very refreshing.
Eight of us came in on a Friday night when we were in town for a wedding. It's a great space, the food was great, the drinks were cheap (I'm a New Yorker, though, so that might not mean anything) and the music was good. It's a great chill atmosphere for big groups since you order and pay at the bar for all drinks and food. The fries are amazing. The chili fries are extra amazing. I heard good reviews of the burgers, too. We left around 10:30, and couples had just started dancing.
The atmosphere is of an old west saloon. There is a small dance floor up confront of the stage and a big bar with lots of beer on draft. Downstairs is a pool table and a quaint small space. A live band played some country music as well as some of their originals. Service at the bar was fairly quick for the place being busy. I would most definitely go back again earlier in the day to try the food and a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the higher energy late night which was throughly enjoyed.
Came here a few times. Chill spot. Plenty of indoor seating. Long bar to sit at a well. They have a stage and play live music. Drinks are ok. Good AC to beat the heat. They also have a separate bar downstairs. It's a tiki themed bar. It's ok.
Food was good. The band was great. I think they were called the 3J's. Service was impeccable. Our server Paris great smile warm personality. Our group was giving her a hard time because we are guys. And she took it like a champ. I would come here again and recommend it to friends and family.
We have been to Phoenix a few times when we are out at night but today was the first time we went for food. My husband was beyond happy with his chili - definitely what they are most famous for. The cornbread was also very moist and fluffy. My chicken sandwich had the makings to be delicious but my chicken was a tiny bit dry. Won't stop us from coming back tho! They made my drink excellent (deep Eddy's vodka soda with a splash of cranberry juice)
We stopped by Phoenix Saloon in New Braunfels on a Saturday afternoon. The live musician was great, and we had a lot of fun dancing — definitely the highlight of our visit. The atmosphere was lively and enjoyable. Unfortunately, the service didn’t quite match the vibe. The bartender came across as unfriendly and acted as though getting our drinks was an inconvenience, which put a bit of a damper on the experience. Overall, it’s a good place to grab a beer and enjoy live music in a nice atmosphere, but the service was mediocre and could be improved.
As a music venue and bar, The Phoenix is top-notch. We love this place! So many good times and great tunes! Today we went for lunch to try their food ... 'famous chili' and other fare. There were 13 patrons, including us, a wait staff of 3 and 2 more in the kitchen. They were overwhelmed. The food order was incorrect, food items were taken to the wrong table, the chili was cold and beans under cooked. The beer, however, was great. We'll eat somewhere else and come back for the music and beverages. Please don't screw that up.
GREAT PLACE! We loved the music, atmosphere and decor. The only reason I didn't rate 5 stars was the service. We sat at the bar and the bartender was so rude. Clearly didn't care about her job. Maybe having a bad day but it really impacted our experience. We had such a great Sunday but her attitude made us leave and go somewhere else. Otherwise we would have stayed. Maybe another time. Other than that issue...... it's a super fun place
Disappointing. Was excited to try the chili. It came out cold! Tasted okay. Meat was tender, but overall nothing to bring me back. The cornbread was good. Also really wanted to try the burgers after reading that Texas Monthly rated it one of the best burgers in Texas. Whenever that was, it was a long time ago. This is not the same burger. Nothing was bad or wrong, just kinda middle of the road. Which honestly is what you expect from bar food. Yeah, the cold chili was disappointing, but things happen. I’m sure it’s not always like that. My one complaint is the pricing of the chili. $6 for 4oz is kinda ridiculous. That’s about a dollar per spoon full.
We had family from out of state , so I thought this would be a great place to take them , for the history , and the food. Well , the history was the same, the food, thankfully, was still very good. What was awful and embarrassing was the service. There were only a few people at the bar, and 1 other table was leaving . A new couple did come in after we did , and they got their food before we did. There were 4 adults and 1 child. My husband got his chili long before anyone else. I ordered chili nachos and got chili french fries ( sent back) as long as it took , I thought nacho chips were made there , NOT. I have had a better HEB brand out of the bag. Then, dishes and spoon were dirty. I was so upset. The bartender did come tell us it was the server's first day alone , sorry , but she should have been helped, and why did food take so long? We all had chili, and I am sure it is not made to order. It will be a while before I take anyone there again or go myself. So unless you have a lot of time to spend , there are many other choices in New Braunfels.
Live music, historical atmosphere, and service was excellent. Chilli was pretty bad (tasted like low quality beef stew), black walnut old fashioned was basically just whiskey (not complaining, but not memorable) and the corn bread was oddly wet, mealy, and tasteless. I ventured to this place based on it's history and best Texas chilli reputation and found the place very cool, but skip the food is 2/10 at best.
IDK what happened but I ordered their famous chili with chunks of sirloin, very disappointed, no chunks, only shredded meat, I stopped by based on the reviews. And what happened to the cornbread, it was way overcooked, looks like the batter was way too dry. Cornbread was thin and dry, overall a very underrated meal. I really wanted to like the Phoenix but most likely will not come back. However, it looks like a nice place to hang out with friends for drinks.
The good: Great atmosphere, tasty chili, excellent section of beers and ales and pleasant bartenders. The not so good: short on staff, and the chili portions were not as advertised. A small is a 4 oz and a medium is 8 oz; realistically the small is a ramekin…2 maybe 3 ozs and the 8 it’s is probably about right. No beans and fryer was out so it wasn’t as good as expected. :(
The Saloon is fine, but the speakeasy downstairs was a disaster. I didn't mind being put on a list because it was a Saturday and the bouncer was very nice. The decor inside was kind of cool, I especially liked the 'windows'. But the drinks were truly awful! The prices on the menu were incorrect. It took 40 minutes for our table's drinks to come out (there were 2 bartenders and only 10 people down there). I'm no stranger to a strong drink but my daquiri tasted like kerosene. The maitais had a salad of mint leaves on top of them and were un-drinkable because they were so strong. The blue Hawaiians were drastic shades different of blue and I'm not even sure how that happens when you make the drinks side by side. The air was musty and every 15 minutes or so something kept burning (?!) and the odor of melting plastic had me running back upstairs. They need to work out a few hiccups before I go back.
The bar gives you that old school bar feel. I came to watch the band ‘Just Like That’ last night. One of the bartenders was rude. I believe they said her name was Paris. She was rude every time I interacted with her. The family and I started a tab and started ordering food and drinks. The chili cheese dogs were great and so were the wedges The bartender came to clean the table which was nice but then she tried taking our beers from us. We told her we weren’t done with them and she said yes you are. Then when we told her she was being rude for no reason she said we had to leave. One of the worst bartenders I have experienced since moving to Texas, and it was a great way not to get tipped. And that’s exactly what we did closed out our tab and left her zero in tips. I used to be a bartender and I made sure I worked for my tips by being nice and respectful to the customer to try and maximize my tip. Paris shouldn’t be bartending if she doesn’t know how to talk to people. The place and the food were great but the service/bartender was horrible.
Very sad to have to make this review. Went to this place based on the reviews and really wanted to love it. Ordered fried pickles, cornbread, chili, and chili cheese dog. The fried pickles were the best thing. The cornbread I got had 3 pieces way overcooked and 2 pieces slightly undercooked. The chili hardly had any flavor. The chili dog was overpriced for what it was. I was expecting an actual hotdog with chili drenched on top but instead got an open face sandwich type thing and was pretty disappointed. The staff was nice and the manager tried to make things right but we didn’t have time to stay for a new batch of cornbread since she noticed it right at the end of our meal. The server didn’t check on us to see if everything was good. The atmosphere was nice. If I ever come back it’ll only be to listen to the music and drink.
In all my life I have only left 3 bad reviews, including this one. My intentions here are not to hurt the Phoenix but to raise awareness to the owners. I love this place, have been coming here here for close to two decades, but I have noticed a decline in the overall quality. The chillie used to be awesome, but the last time I ordered it, it was more like soup. The beers on tap used to be cold and delicious, the beer I ordered today, after waiting at the empty bar for 10min, was so bad and warm I couldn’t finish it. She relayed the message to a lady who I assume was a manger/owner there was only explanations why their system couldn’t produce a flat/warm beer so I paid for my $8 shitty beer and left. I’m sad to see this decline in such an amazing and historic place. I hope this helps get things back on track.
Nice setup, great atmosphere, and fantastic service. My issue with this place is the pricing. My apologies to the bartender I thought was trying to scam me until she printed the price out in front of me. Out of all the local bars and nightclubs, Phoenix Saloon is by far the most expensive, without good reason. I will not be returning.
Young girl working on Sunday very bad. She seemed like she didn’t want to be bothered because she wanted to visit her friend. Chili was ok. Cornbread was dry and hands down the worst Irish coffee I ever had! She only put Jameson in my coffee! No Kalua! No brown sugar cube! She never checked on me. Lousy service. Y’all need to boot her out the door!
Rude bartenders. Update: The owner copy and pasted the same response to multiple people. Take a look at their Facebook reviews. This isn’t the first time someone had the same bad experience. Closing time was midnight, and we were there from 11-11:30 and that’s when we were cut off. When we walked in, there was a man at the bar in a cowboy hat and an underarmour shirt, who could barely keep his eyes open; “blatantly intoxicated.” When we got cut off by staff after one drink, he asked if he was also cut off. The staff responded with “no, you seem fine.” His girlfriend (not sure she was even 21), who wasn’t carded at the door or the bar, was served four drinks after getting into an argument with him at the bar in front of all of us. I stand by my original review, and am disappointed how the owner decided to respond completely ignoring any opportunity to improve the service at their establishment.
Unprofessional staff: disrespectful attitudes. Poor customer courtesy.
It was our first visit to this place, and we were excited to see on their website that they offered an assortment of Texas chili! Unfortunately, when we walked in, not only were we not greeted by anyone, but another couple walked in behind us and were greeted and their order taken while we stood in front of the only employee, feeling bewildered. This place was not busy. There were a few people seated at the bar and no one seated at any of the tables in the place. We left without ordering and will not be returning.
We had our first drink of the night there. And the lady cut us off, after literally one drink. It was the most bizarre experience I’ve ever had. We were a group of 30s moms who were on a girls weekend. We couldn’t get drunk if we tried. Zero stars would not recommend *Update* the owner gave a generic response and copied pasted their response to the group. We got there at 11:30. The bar staff was obviously ready to leave for the night. They were annoyed by our sheer existence walking into the bar. The reviews by us and several others, are a blatant proof of their piss poor service. Owner - do better.
TERRIBLE service! Bad, overpriced food. Paid $25 for a chili cheese dog and a side salad instead of chips. They brought me a hot dog bun so burnt that I couldn't even cut through it. I asked for another bun and she said she would just get me a new hot dog. We finished our meal and left 30 min after and they never brought me a hot dog.
