Yes... finally a soul food spot with great catfish. Everything was delish. I had mac and cheese, catfish, and collard greens.They even give you a piece of cornbread. Mmmmmm lol. There was at least a 15 to 20 min wait but it was well worth it. Promise you.Overall, customer service is ok and there is seating available. Not only is the food amazing, when an error is made, the owner QUICKLY addresses the issue in favor of the customer. Love the jazz and gospel music that plays throughout this small but comfortable restaurant. Bring a big appetite as the portions are healthy. A 10 in my book.

The food is phenomenal My wife and I are celebrating her birthday thinking of the many places that she wanted to go she decided to go to sugharplums. We have eaten here several times and once again we were filled to the gills and please beyond words.

The candied Yams, brought tears to my eyes, actually how Candied yams are supposed to be. I felt that if had i had more money, i would've ordered an entire tray to take home. Food n music was excellent! After ordering my food I was told they only accept cash. I had no cash. Then the server suggested using the cash app. Please put up a sign CASH ONLY... Nice atmosphere and really good food!

This place has great soul food. Our favorites are the fried catfish and short ribs dinners. The sides are also excellent and we particularly like the collard greens and cabbage. The candied yams come as a side but they would make a great standalone dessert. The restaurant is relatively small with only 6 tables but they do a very brisk takeout business. All in all, if you want a great southern meal, this is the place!

I don't ever write reviews... but, I'd put this spot up against any Soul Food restaurant. My family are Southerners and I eat out a lot! The quality of the food was surprisingly fresh; fried foods cooked on the spot, so don't expect it in a rush. The Peach Cobbler and Banana Pudding is what assured this review. They even have a nice set up for dining...oh, and it's extremely AFFORDABLE!!! My new Go-Too Highly recommended

It's a small restaurant that cooks delicious Southern style food no doubt!... small entertainment area you can have small parties there... Originally raised in Georgia, I spent about $95.00 at Sugarplums because I wanted a lot of their items. Well worth it go there. Spend some money and support now!! Oh, and the fried Whiting will make you start crying!!

The people, food, and overall atmosphere was so great I went back 3 times in a row! I really love this place and am so glad I found some real southern soul food style cooking that is amazing!!! You all are so wonderful! :-) My family and I are very well pleased. I greatly recommend this place!

Came from Springfield, MA and made a pit stop here and the food was amazing! I had fried whiting and my friends had this perfect golden crispy fried chicken OMG. Highly recommended!! The owner was also super kind and confident that her collard greens did not need vinegar and she was absolutely RIGHT.

I came here today and it was so amazing!! First off, to those saying the servers are rude, maybe it was you, cause when I went the owner and cooks were nothing but sweet and kind. Heard about this place from many friends. I pulled up on a Tuesday and they were closed when they should have been opened. Took me a few months to get back around here but the food really exceeded my expectation. The reviews had me skeptical but the service was great. I changed my order at least 3 times and got no attitude at all. I ordered the chicken with collards greens (not canned) yams and a side of shrimp. Thats alot of food and i planned to save some but i coulndt stop munching because the food was amazingly good! Fresh,seasoned, flavorful, and healthy portions is just a few words to describe my experience. The music was not loud at all. It seems that they may have listened and learned from the past reviews and are trying to redeem themselves. Continue to support black owned businesses and give constructive criticism. Nobody is perfect but you can perfect a kraft. The food and service earned all 5 stars.

Taste just like mom's ! Amazing food, like literally ! If you're looking for quick and cheap food there's a KFC around the corner. This is the real deal and it takes TIME. Highly recommend that you call ahead with your order, and it's apparent that it's NOT a dine in restaurant. I can see why staff gets frustrated, the place looks very upscale however they make it known it's a TAKE OUT restaurant. if you want to sit and eat AFTER you pay then you are more than welcome to. When you go to your local Chinese restaurant, you wait until you order is called and you go to the counter to pick it up and go sit. So I don't understand why other people are complaning & don't understand this concept at SuggarPlums ? Either way, the young ladies there were very nice and recommended good food. Everything came out hot and fresh at an amazing price as well !

I went here for the first time about a week ago, and oh baby! My 2 year has been asking for chicken ever since! The food is well made, just overall delicious. I have never had soul food so good. I was driving back to CT, and we had to pull into a gas station to eat some more. My son was in his seat crying for more chicken. I only purchased two orders, and I regretted it. The food at this establishment is incredible but more importantly is their level of customer service. When you walk in you are greeted with a smile, Never an attitude. There is zero negative energy in this place of business. I love the smothered pork chops, Turkey wings and Whiting. Suggarplums is definitely the real deal so I suggest everyone take a trip that will be well worth it... they cook per order so you know its fresh.

I attended a staff lunch party here today and I had never heard about it. The food is amazing and there is definitely a feel of southern hospitality present! I had the catfish with baked macaroni and cheese with the candied yams and it tasted just like my grandmothers cooking!!! I will definitely be bringing my family back to try some more of this delicious soul food. I recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a real homemade meal. Love it!!!!

I think I can speak for everyone that’s local and eats here regularly... the food is GREAT! But the customer service? Yeah that isn’t so great. They need to update their hours, be more attentive to the phone, and give customers an honest wait time for the food.

I went for takeout about 3 weeks ago, and my boyfriend & I ate at the restaurant a week ago. So let me address the rudeness issue: my first time there, I observed an issue between a group of IONA COLLEGE students and the owner. As soon as they walked in, they were asking why noone acknowledged them etc....by the time their food was ready they were telling the owner that they wont be back...to which she said she doesn't give a darn (I would have handled it differently, but I think she was stressed and they could've been more patient in my opinion) My experience was good the first time, great the second time and the food was great both times. They are busy so you may wait for take-out.....

Staff needs to be more customer service oriented. I called to place an order and a lady by the name of fay was so rude. She didn't understand my simple order so she told another lady "here take this order cuz I don't understand." If I didn't have my heart set on getting soul food I would've never came.

HONEST REVIEW: Food is amazing (a little expensive but worth it), one of the best stores in the area but there is ALWAYS a wait. I tried on multiple occasions to call 30-45 mins before picking up my food but I'm ALWAYS waiting an extra 15 -20 mins on top of the 30-45 mins. Timing and customer service skills need improvement at this location but overall this place is a great spot to eat soul food. People are friendly and pretty known within the community.

Consistently delicious, great side options...only 3 stars because they have a full menu but sometimes out of select main dishes. I guess it depends on whats cooked that particular day and what time you go to the resturant. To be fair i have never sat in to eat only placed orders to go a head by telephone(will take long if you order on the spot) so maybe you can order from the full menu if you dine-in anytime

Suggarplums food is SERIOUSLY some of the best you can have. Everything is cooked beautifully and has so much flavor .. unfortunately the service is abysmal. For starters, ordering online is impossible. Their website always says they’re unavailable when they’re open. This goes for Ubereats as well. When you call there is a 50/50 chance they won’t pick up. If you come to the restaurant, half the time no one is behind the counter and you have to wait for someone to acknowledge you. The staff for the most part are friendly and do give a nice vibe but I dread the entire ordering process. I say this as constructive criticism because their product is so damn good. If they tightened up they could be a 10/10

I gave 3 stars for their service. First I called to place my order for pickup and no answer. I drove there place my order and she told me 35mins. It took an hour and a half. They were busy talking and they walk entirely too slow. There's no kind of urgency whatsoever. But they get ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for the taste of the food. Hands down the best soul food I've ever eaten. If their service is better they will be 5 stars across the board.

The service and wait time just to receive your food is extremely slow. Not a good sign when it is the start of the business day, and the place is empty at the time. The music is a bit loud on the overhead speaker. The food is decent; I recommend the oxtails, and sweet potaoe. The collard greens are not freshly made, but out the can. Average!

When I tell you the owner or the manager (not sure which) of this place is RUDE & unprofessional. Should’ve gotten her name but she’s African American & MISERABLE. She tried to charge me 30$ For two fried chicken meals. But on the menu it says 12 each ! I questioned her & she started getting angry and defensive (obviously because she thought I was young&naive). She then says the menu is outdated but she’ll charge me 28 for the food as a curtesy lol. She comes knocking on my car door asking to see my phone like a LUNATIC. Food is good but BEWARE. Supporting black business is important but how can we if this is the lousy customer service we often receive.

The manager is rude. The service is poor. We stood there for 15 minutes and then we decided to call out to one of the workers and she finally came over and took our order. No one asked for our order or of we were being helped. My girl friend and I came to eat at 8:20 and she said she's closing at 9pm so she's not doing dine in anymore meanwhile people are coming in getting food and sitting. Her rudeness was only directed toward my girlfriend and I. (I'm female) there were a few heterosexual couples and she smiled and was very polite to them. Horrible that people can't get over it. It's 2015 for crying out loud. Anyway, the food was good, place is small and cozy. I would've been back to sit and eat another time but her attitude and poor service will keep me away.

I purchased a Groupon. Had to wait 30 minutes for my food when I inquired with the waiter the owner came and informed me the food was not cooked yet. The owner of the restaurant was rude and then we had to wait 30 more minutes only then to receive food full of oil, butter and greasy.

Server was rude as soon as we walked in.. Ask what they had, nstead of handing us a menu, they said tell us what you want and we'll tell you what we don't have.. Unfortunately I had to wait about an hour for a meal due to not being informed that what I ordered wasn’t on the menu anymore and was discontinued. (The person who took my order never informed me that the meal was taken off the menu) After that I was told that there was a longer wait because my name was not on a ticket but I specifically remember spelling my name out for the employee taking my order. I literally sat for about a hour and a half and got nothing but attitude when confronting the service.

Owner is very disrespectful and called my phone to complain about an issue between her and Uber. Kept saying she doesn’t understand my request about wanting extra cornbread and sadly I had to break it down. Customer service is lacking 100% and the unprofessionalism is just all over the place.

Came because Sweet Potato was backed up, I should have waited. This place is extremely slow, how long do it take for catfish. Here almost 40 mins, when someone comes in and ordered on the phone and they only had 1 dinner ready and right away fed iced he re another Shrimp dinner. This is the second time I’ve drove 30 mins to try this restaurants food, they do not update they’re times of business. Google says they close at 7PM and the message on the phone says 6PM. I drove here and they are closed for a private event but no where does it say that on the site or did they update there voicemail. It was about 5 other cars Parked outside upset because they were closed with no notice to the public. I will not try again & be disappointed which sucks I really wanted to try the food

The food is DELICIOUS!!! The service sucks worst than your worst nightmare!!! Worst of all- it's the owner! She's rude and nasty for no reason- just bitter! As good as the food is, she will never get another dime of my hard-earned money.

The food is delish hands down, but unfortunately the etiquette of the restaurant is not up to par which is why I only give one star. The website says the opening time is 1:00pm on Sundays, but everytime I go the doors are closed and lights off. This Sunday 11/6/2022 I went to enter the restaurant and the kind lady mouthed to me that they were not opening until 3pm. 2 hours after the time stated on their website. Myself and others, who were waiting outside of the restaurant, finally decided to drive away. As mentioned above the food is delicious, but due to lack of customer etiquette and consideration I will unfortunately not return. Best of luck.

So we order at , my bf gets oxtails & mac & cheese and I get salmon and mac & cheese and yams. I inquire about the salmon prepared (fried, grilled baked ? Etc) . There’s no pic or description on menu. She seems annoyed. Question is unanswered. Red Flag #1. We wait several minutes. See other customers get their orders . She calls us to the counter -- not our order . We wait some more , she calls us to the counter AGAIN, it is still incorrect. Purposeful ? Maybe. Unclear where miscommunication lies, order was recorded on receipt. At this point my bf is upset and the cashier’s reply is : "not my fault, talk to the manager" at which point the manager waddles over and rudely asks "What's the PROBLEM? " Atp there’s a clear indication our issue has escalated well beyond food. In summary a huge argument between the boisterous and obnoxious kitchen warden continues with my partner for several minutes. Very loud and embarrassing scene. Also …still hungry. We’re refunded never receive our order needless to say. Visit another local soul food restaurant that saved the afternoon. Patronize at your own risk, come equipped with patience. Leave your expectations of professionalism and organization at home.

It’s unfortunate when you have to stop supporting a business due to a lack of professionalism and customer service. I understand people have bad days, however that should not be displayed or taken out on customers. The attitudes and shortness is at an all-time high at this restaurant. I called into to place an order and instead of a smooth and simple transaction I was placed on hold for 8 minutes. I hung up and called back in hopes to being able to place my order, when explaining to the woman who answered the phone what just occurred, she cuts me off and says “I’m not sure what you expect for me to do about that”. Needless to say, myself, friends or family will never support this restaurant again!

The fried chicken was good, but their sides are too greasy. My Mac and Cheese was on a bed of grease under it. My wife had their string beans and it was greasy as well. They also didn’t have corn bread, how you a soul food restaurant and don’t have corn bread??? I wouldn’t go back.

Went there because Sweet Potato was closed. I've had their food catered. Walked in the lady yells at the boy to take my order after he asked her a simple question. They tell me 25 mins for my food ended up being an hour. Ppl who wanted to dine in had to order at the counter. Some guy was joking and wrestling with the girls while they were fixing food. Then the women made her a bowl of yams and stood right in the middle of the floor and ate in front of customers. There were customers that came well after me that got their food before me. Oh it was because I ordered Salmon that was the reasoning. After all of that the food was disgusting. I was so disappointed. No cornbread because there was none made on a Sunday.

Went to this “establishment” with my partner and immediately regretted it. Staff was highly rude, unorganized, and unsanitary. As soon as we stepped into the restaurant we encountered one of the staff tending to the food without hair net or gloves. While waiting we had the unfortunate luxury of listening to the owner curse out an Uber Eats driver over the phone. The straw to break the camels back was being told that “ we should know that our order would take long” after ordering smothered pork chops and catfish. This was ridiculous because no staff mentioned anything about extended wait times. Would I recommend this place to someone? Not a chance.

I have given this place multiple tries and each time the customer service has been abysmal. Every time I have called in for an order or visited, each person has demonstrated extremely poor customer service skills, which tells me that is the culture of this establishment. I have called several times after 1pm and they were not opened. I was provided with an additional number to call, by the staff, and when I call it to check if they are opened, the woman is very nasty and rude. I try to support black owned businesses, always. However, I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone to patronize; the customer service is ghetto and disgustingly unprofessional. I have eaten down the block at Sweet Potato Soul Food Restaurant on North Ave and though a bit pricier, the food is great and the customer service has NEVER been an issue for me or anyone I have recommended the place to, unlike Suggarplums, where every person I speak to about this place has the same horrid customer service experience. This establishment does not even deserve the 1 star I was forced to give them here on this review.

My previous review if this place and its owner….. please see below has changed. We enjoyed the food so much we had the nerve to hire the owner for an event. Some people should just stay in their storefronts. We try to help our people but this experience spoke to every stereotype out there. All I’m going to say is Unprofessional and Unprepared. Do not hire for parties, weddings, banquets. Original Post: Food is Amazing. The wait time was not bad because we called our order in. The lady on the phone was friendly. Food was ready when we got there. Very reasonably priced. The manager is a sweetheart! My favorite dishes, chicken and fish plates, with cabbage, sweet potatoes, Mac. Banana pudding and peach cobbler are among the top I've ever tasted. Pros: Food so good it won't make it home. Plenty of parking Cons: Potato Salad too sweet Staff could be more attentive Unfriendly, unprofessional owner

I will start off by referring you to a better location. Sweet Potatoes Restaurant ( 393 North Ave) Is only a 2 minutes drive away. The food is better. The people there are nice and theres never any drama. Food does not get dropped, and there are no babies crying in cribs. Also, DO NOT use the sugar plum for catering, as they are not reliable and there is a very real chance that she will cancel your order the day of, and you will be left to scramble last minute. Its really a shame, because the owner really gets in her own way. This is my first time leaving a bad review. There are enough bad reviews for you to get the point. So I’ll make it simple for you and leave bullet points of what I’ve witnessed. I have personally witnessed the owner: - use words like “bitch” to both staff and CUSTOMERS - drop trays of food - her prices are not clear and fluctuate - have customers wait OVER AN HOUR only to tell them she’s too stressed out to complete the order - she told us to come back and that she would compensate us for waiting so long, and then cursed us out when we asked for the compensation. - her own daughter had to try to calm her down using statements like “you’re being very unprofessional with customers here.” I’ve seen her be cordial and friendly to people that matter. However, if you are a new customer, your best bet it to drive the 2 minutes, or walk the 8 to 393 north ave and call it a day. I hope that helped.

Just a copy of their menu. The food was good, but if you judge a place by their rest room, you would NEVER go back again! Very nasty and dirty restroom. Music, even though it was of a religious nature, was so loud, that I had to lean over the table to talk to my daughter. I would not recomend this place to anyone. Tighten up guys!!!!
