Opinions de Crif Dogs New York
no frills hotdog spot. they serve all beef franks too. check out the phone booth 😉
Crif Dogs in the East Village is pure late-night NYC energy—neon lights, underground vibe, and a menu that turns hot dogs into wild creations. I went for the Elote Dog, and it was unforgettable: a juicy dog loaded with sweet corn, creamy mayo, cotija cheese, and a dusting of chili powder. Messy, bold, and absolutely worth it—street food with a delicious twist.
This is the original Crif Dogs location, opened in 2001. It’s been my favorite place to get hot dogs and tater tots for 17 years. My favorite crif dog is the Chihuahua (bacon-wrapped with sour cream and avocado). Each dog, whether it’s pork and beef (crif), all beef (New Yorker) or the Bacon-Wrapped Crifs, all have a delightful snap with each bite. You can build your own dog and even start with a veggie, if you’re a non-meat eater. The list of toppings is extensive, including things like a fried egg, potato chips, sauerkraut, hummus, cole slaw, chili, and cheese. The tots are great. Salty and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The East Village Tots have cheese and pickled jalapeños on them, which adds a wonderful creaminess and spice. They have an amazing daily special: -Every day from 2-5 and 12am-close you will get 2 build your own dogs and a soft drink, beer, or cocktail for $10, $12, or $15 respectively. They are open late (2-3am) and the telephone booth leads to a speakeasy, just pick up the phone to get on the list. They also have two table top arcade games. You have to go down a few stairs to get in.
I seldom eat hotdogs so my review will be limited.. still, this place is definitely cool, worth to check out, and the hotdog menu is really unique and creative. ✏️For ppl who want a meal, you might need 2 hotdogs or at least a side. The one I got, Elote dog, was recommended by the staff, pretty interesting. Bacon-wrapped sausage with cotija cheese, corn, and sauce. Hotdog was juicy, a rich one with reasonable price.
Certainly worth a visit for some unique hot dogs...just not the best hot dogs in New York City. It is a typical East Village kind of place. Entrance to a speakeasy called Please Don't Tell is through the old phone booth door. Best part of tho hot dog experience is the fresh soft potato roll.
Even though the place is inaccessible, the Crif dogs staff came outside to take my order. I had been missing this place for years and happened to be at an event a few blocks away so decided to make the trek over. Just like I remembered - a quality hot dog with all the works. Thanks team!
A very cool restaurant, which has a speakeasy inside of it (please don’t tell). The hotdogs are Yum. Potentially a little bit overpriced but worth it and the tater tots are delicious too. Service was a little bit slow but understand it for a Friday night. Definitely worth a visit if you’re a fan of little bit more upmarket non-vendor street hotdogs.
We came here for a quick bite. I just ordered an ordinary frankfurter, although there are many more complex styles. I did not realize there was a speakeasy inside here and they'll deliver the hot dog to your seat. I should come back here to try more options.
Hot dog itself seems like it's deep fried so the skin is crisp while the inside stays juicy, with great pork flavor. The bun is pretty normal which seems like a waste when so much effort is put into the hot dog and toppings. Restaurant gets pretty loud and crowded with all the speakeasy customers but we were able to find a seat even on Saturday night. The hot dogs are on the smaller side so you can have one as a light meal or combine it with tater tots. Splitting two hot dogs and a side of loaded tater tots between two people is good for a full meal. Lil Ma hot dog - was intrigued by the peanut butter and it paired pretty well with the acidity of the pickles Elote hot dog - not as impressed by this one but good if you like the toppings included Nacho tater tots - reminds me of something you'd make at late night in a college dining hall and really hits the spot after a long day of walking around NYC
If you love a great hotdog, then Crif Dogs should be one of your go-to spots. I’ve been coming to the St. Mark’s shop for as long as I can remember because they have so many different options/combinations that you can get. Pretty much anything goes in term of your toppings. On this occasion I got two dogs, one tsunami and the other a chili dog. Both were good. The diced pineapple and scallions add great flavor to the tsunami dog. The chili dog was good, even though it was light on the chili and could have used some heat. Nevertheless it was still very good. Most of my visits have been in the wee hours of the night; 1-2 in the morning. On this visit it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon. On the weekends during the warmer weather they set up outside on the closed street and it’s a nice environment. So chilled and comfortable. Overall, if you’re in this part of the Village and you want a quick hotdog, then it’s definitely worth going to this legendary place. Give it a try because I’m sure you’ll love it.
Great spot for a quick bite. I had the “Chihuahua” hot dog and I enjoyed it. My hot dog was wrapped in a slice of bacon, had a slice of avocado, sour cream. AlThough I’ve never had a hot dog dressed up like this, it felt like $8 might have been a bit pricey. I absolutely loved the “chill/arcade” vibe this place had :)
I heard that this place has an amazing hotdog so I popped in at lunch to try some. I didn't know what to choose so I asked for recommendations and ordered the Elote and a glass of frozen Margarita. The hotdog was hot and tasty and juicy! I wanted to eat another one but got full so will have to go back next time to try some with more toppings!
I love how Please Don’t Tell, a speakeasy, is located inside this hot dog restaurant. It is super convenient because after hanging out and drinking at the speakeasy, you can step out of the speakeasy and immediately order food. I only got tater tots when I visited Crif Dogs, but it was very good. Freshly made tots that are nice and crispy - just the way I like it. The service was great and the guy at the front was super nice to my friends and I. It was definitely a great way to end our night of going out.
If this review was solely based on the speakeasy 'Please Don't Tell', I would give 5 stars, but the way my friends and I were treated/spoken to in Crif Dogs was unacceptable. My friends and I walked into Crif dogs as we had a 5:30pm reservation at 'Please Don't Tell'. For anyone who is unaware you must enter the speakeasy through a phone booth within Crif dogs. It was our first time there so my friends and I naturally were taking in the space and decor on the walls and spent at most a total of 2 minutes taking everything in. Suddenly an employee with dark hair and glasses appeared from behind the counter and rudely tells my group that we need to line up single file to enter the speakeasy. Not everyone in my party heard her initially so she raised her voice to 'LINE UP SINGLE FILE'. We accidentally started to line up in the wrong direction. Apparently we made a HUGE mistake. She then raised her voice to the point where people dining stopped eating to look at the scene. She began gesticulating her hands and kept repeating "Single File, this way, Single File this way, Single File this way'. It was not only unnecessary but down right demeaning. At this point I was nearly frozen in place because I was scared that if I made one more wrong move I'd get scolded again. For context my friends and I are native New Yorkers so we're used to directness and a baseline level of 'attitude', but this was on a different level. Even her coworker seemed to acknowledge how 'extra' her behavior was and tried her best to smooth things over by smiling and calmly explaining where to stand. I understand that space is limited and it could be a potential fire hazard if people are not lined up in an organized fashion. This is not an excuse to speak rudely to customers upon entry who are unaware of the rules. Perhaps a large clearly written sign should be posted upon entrance for awareness. So for any future patrons who want to enter Please Don't Tell YOU BETTER LINE UP SINGLE FILE ASAP. To end on a positive note - the staff upon entering Please Don't Tell were lovely. They were polite, gave suggestions on what to order, and prompt service. Good drinks and tasty food.
