Opinions de French Roast New York
On a busy Sunday midday we were seated quickly and received excellent, friendly service from David! I recommend the BLT, the “No” jito and the coffee. Will be back!
French Roast is a wonderful spot to eat, relax, and catch up with friends. The atmosphere here is wonderful, easy going, relaxed, atmospheric, and very free. And the food is amazing! The tomato soup was delicious and the Grilled Salmon as well. Croissants are fresh and crispy and coffee is flavourful and full of aroma. I throughly enjoyed the food and the ambiance of this wonderful restaurant, the people that work here, and will for sure come back and recommend this restaurant to everyone.
While on vacation, we stopped in here for a bite to eat, not knowing how iconic this place was. We sat next to lovely people who gave us lots of information about the area. The belgium waffle with fruit was yummy, but the hot chocolate was the best I've ever had, so creamy and decadent!
Amazing! We had the goat cheese, zucchini noodles and french fries to start! These were REAL truffle fries! And then we had gnocchi which was more cheese than anything/filet mignon and arugula salad/ the specialty soup (carrots & something else)!! Everything was delicious we finished everything I must say we probably could skip some of the entries as there was plenty of food! The cocktails looked amazing but we only tried the margarita which was smokey delicious! Staff friendly and really packed!! Consider doing a reservation
We had a wonderful experience at French Roast. Our waitress Lena was super attentive and friendly, and the food was absolutely delicious! The place looks like and old brasserie you would find in Paris! We highly recommend it for an exquisite French dinner at a very reasonable price. We will come back!
Delicious food and delightful service. Perfect for a cold night. Our server Maria Alejandra greeted us with a smile, made great recommendations, and checked in on us the perfect amount. Friendly but never overbearing. The brussel sprouts were a standout. Looking forward to our next visit!
One of my absolute favorite restaurants in NYC. The epitome of the magical upper west culture. Our server David was amazing and kind and attentive. We will continue to come back any chance we get. The Black Sea Bass dish was BEYOND incredible and the mulled wine was so delicious.
Our waitress Lena was wonderful! So friendly and helpful with suggestions and answered all our questions. She was so positive and energetic. Made us feel at home. We are from Washington state visiting our daughter and we will definitely be back! Thank you 😊
Been coming here for years, so finally taking some time to leave a review :) This is one of my favorite restaurants on the UWS! Lively, charming atmosphere and some great food too (both brunch and dinner). I especially like the shakshuka for brunch and roasted chicken for dinner. It can get a bit crowded on the weekend, but I appreciate that the hosts and staff always try to accommodate when we walk in. Shout out to the bartending staff especially for always taking care of us. And a great thanks to Lauren for taking care of us as an outdoor table in the freezing cold (and making sure our hot coffee was refilled)!
Our server Stefani was amazing, she truly was the icing on the cake to an awesome experience . Every food item came out perfect from the snails to the Scandinavian bene, not to mention the speciality cocktail we’re on point. Definitely check this place out for brunch on your way to the markets on a Sunday .
1000/10 would recommend. This restaurant is absolutely amazing from the ambience to the food to the service. Adrian was very attentive to our party the entire night. Everything was absolutely delicious. We had the short rib and mashed potatoes that literally tasted like heaven. Try out French Roast, you won’t regret it!
Great food and atmosphere. Drago is an amazing bartender! Super friendly, attentive, and incredibly skilled. He made fantastic cocktails and created such a warm, welcoming vibe at the bar. He truly elevated our whole dining experience. Highly recommend sitting at the bar!
I had a reservation at 6:30, and was running a little late with people. I called in advance and ordered ahead as I had an event at 8pm to attend and I didn’t wanna be late. Right as I entered at 6:40 my group and I sat down and got our food right away and it was amazing. The Tuna and The salmon were incredible and the French onion soup was so good. The staff including Maria Alejandra and the hostess were incredible. I will definitely be recommending this place to friends and family. Thank you French Roast for an unforgettable night.
We were looking for a place with character as we passed by a few chains. We certainly got what we were after when we stumbled upon the French Roast. Our waiter was super friendly, helpful and attentive. One thing that stood out to me was that everyone working here was smiling. Good vibes for sure and the food was great. I got the tuna nicoise and it must have had 10 ounces of seared tuna steak. Yum! My wife got the avocado tartine with smoked salmon and hers may have been better than mine but it was close. We highly recommend the French Roast.
My husband and I are obsessed about this place. We almost know the whole team by now, we been to brunch, lunch, dinner, and ordered their dinner specials since we discovered the restaurant. It was always a 10/10 experience! On a hard day at work, we go and blow off steam with the always amazing food. On weekends,we bring friends and family to the restaurant to enjoy a sunny day conversational brunch. When we got our puppy, this is the first restaurant we took him to because we felt comfortable and at home! Highly recommended this place.... I can't say enough! Amin, Lena, Nelson and everyone always make us feel sooooooo welcome. Please check this place out ASAP!
Our server Lena was very sweet and attentive. Definitely made our experience special. The food was excellent. Reminded us of the meals we had in Paris. Not at all pretentious, but just so good and made us feel warm.
Yesenia was amazing and her recommendation for the shakshuka was phenomenal it was truly something different but the flavors were there. Smiles and comfort from the moment you walk through the door and Jorge the bartender makes a killer espresso martini !!
I dined at French Roast for brunch yesterday and had a very pleasant meal with Lauren as my waitress. Her service was impeccable, and the food really stood out. I would definitely recommend the French Onion Soup and Belgian Waffles. Would definitely recommend to a friend!
We had a fabulous dinner and will absolutely be returning. The experience was only heightened by our server, Lauren. She was attentive to all our needs and made sure we were well taken care of through our meal. Highly recommend stopping by if you find yourself in the area and are in need of a good meal.
French roas is best option to ha a great dinner, food was excellent, we loved the atmosphere, everyone staring from the hostess to our server Alejandra. And of course not mention, the during manager Amin. everyone it’s mazing. Definitely we’ll be back soon. and of course we recommend French Rioast. 100%
So my beloved, who is a Michelin Star trained chef who has mentored with Michel Guerard, Alain Senderens, Pierre Troisgros, Roger Verge, Anne Willan and Barbara Tropp decided to surprise me after a rare night to go to French Roast. We tried the Restaurant Week menu with a few add-ons. Our server was named Drago, who actually was very attentive and extremely personable. Our food was extremely well prepared, especially the salmon which my beloved likes it medium rare, so one can taste the freshness of the sea. Will definitely be going to them again and again, and if you do go look for Drago, he’ll definitely take care of you.
My wife and I decided to indulge on this quaint restaurant on broadway! We are not the biggest fans of French Cuisine, but our server Lauren had some awesome recommendations! Everything turned out perfect! We will definitely be returning and asking for Lauren !
Lauren Jones is the reason French Roast on the UWS is even still in business. Kind, attentive, funny and always has a smile on her face. Answers every question I have about the menu (i have a lot of dietary restrictions) and makes a restaurant feel like a home. They should promote her to manager if they know what’s good for them. French Roast has become a weekly staple because of Miss. Jones. God bless her soul. I hope French Roast treats her right because if they don’t, they WILL lose my business. I swear she keeps them a float. I always see her running around while she’s working, but always does it gracefully… I don’t know how she does it. Give her a RAISE or something PLEASE. 🙏🏼
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I recently went to French Roast for a Birthday Brunch & I can’t say enough how phenomenal the food was! Legit Spiced Apple Cider is harder to find than you think, you could taste the spices. So Yummy! Everything ordered from the Salmon Cakes & Eggs Florentine to the Brioche French Toast was absolutely delicious, hot & fresh from the kitchen! The ambiance is adorably transformative & cozy… Our waiter Yesenia was unbelievably sweet and amazingly attentive making for a memorable experience. Bonus points for the wait time not being long at all (about 15 mins) with no reservation on a weekend! Seriously can’t wait to go back! 😊
We love the food and atmosphere at French Roast in the UWS. The staff are amazing! The food is delicious (and some of the best leftovers I’ve had)! We love sitting at the bar with Juan, who is the best bartender! This is one of our regular places to go because of its people and consistency. We can’t say enough good things about it. Really you won’t be disappointed when you come here and we highly recommend it!!
Top tier dining in nyc is right here! We had a 6pm reservation, we were sat immediately. Our waiter, Drago (probably spelling his name wrong) was fantastic!!! He also seemed to be bartender as well but somehow managed to keep up with his tables. His service was so good, food was absolutely delicious, prices very reasonable for quality and quantity of food. We had the steak and burger, both were lick the plate worthy. The creme brulee was insanely good. Wanted to lick the bowl :) Overall, 5 stars all around. Def more of an older crowd this evening, but cool place for a solo night/date night/girls night or family night out!
My best friend and I came in for brunch and had a wonderful time. Our server adam was unbelievably sweet and amazingly attentive making for a great experience. The food was delicious & came out in a timely manner. Can’t wait to come by and have dinner some time soon. Hoping to be sat with adam again as his service was impeccable!
Great lunch for restaurant week. Varied menu and delicious choices. Escargots en croute were good, a little oily. The brunch burger was very good and large. The service was 10/10, especially server Darwin. Very friendly and knowledgeable about menu. Overall a good experience and cozy, pretty restaurant. I would certainly return with family and friends.
Fantastic Service from Lauren! We had an amazing experience thanks to our server, Lauren. From the moment we sat down, she was friendly, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. She anticipated what we needed before we even had to ask and made sure everything came out just right. Her upbeat attitude and genuine care made the whole meal feel special. If you’re dining here, definitely ask for Lauren — she’s outstanding and truly elevates the dining experience.
This was our first time here for brunch and I absolutely loved it. Our server Yesenia was so sweet, positive and attentive throughout our meal. The French toast and Shakshuka were wonderful. Omelette could have used a bit more seasoning, but the homemade french fries were delicious. We will be back!
Lena was excellent! She took care of our group of 9, even while half of us took a while to get to the restaurant. The food was amazing, but Lena’s attention to detail and accommodation made our experience unforgettable. Thanks Lena!!
We were lucky to have Stephany as our server at French Roast. She was warm, attentive, and very efficient even when the restaurant was busy. She made our dinner feel relaxed and enjoyable.
This French Roast Restaurant is truly one of my favorite places to eat. The food is consistently amazing—full of flavor, beautifully prepared, and made with such care. Every dish I’ve tried has been delicious and leaves me wanting to come back again. The staff are just as wonderful as the food. They are friendly, welcoming, and always attentive, making you feel comfortable and valued from the moment you walk in. Their service really adds to the overall experience. The place itself is fantastic—clean, cozy, and with a great atmosphere that makes it perfect for any occasion, whether you’re dining with family, friends, or on a special night out. Overall, this restaurant offers the perfect combination of incredible food, excellent service, and a lovely environment. Highly recommended—I’ll definitely keep coming back! Can wait for my Dinner Christmas Party here with my lovely Family and celebrating at My Lovely and the Best Restaurant Ever Big Love Raharjo Family.
Stephany provided wonderful service at French Roast. She was patient, helpful with the menu, and very attentive during the whole meal. Definitely one of the best dining experiences we’ve had there!
Steph went above and beyond for my anniversary brunch. The experience was everything and more. From being acknowledged upon arrival to our goodbyes, Steph and the staff were amazing and I am super grateful. Would definitely recommend French Roast in the future.
My daughter brought me here to celebrate my birthday. First time here. Staff was very accommodating and helpful when we asked questions about the menu. Such pleasant service from our server. Food was immensely delicious. No complaints here at all. Everything was great. Thank you to the staff and manner for helping in celebrating my birthday. .
Had a great experience at French Roast! The food and atmosphere were exactly what you hope for in a neighborhood favorite. A special shoutout to Lauren, our server—she was excellent. Friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience feel effortless. She really elevated the meal. Will definitely be back!
The quality of the dinner was excellent. Every dish was full of flavor, well prepared, and clearly made with fresh ingredients. Drago provided outstanding customer service. He was attentive, friendly, and genuinely focused on making sure everything was perfect throughout the evening. Thank you to all the staff. It was a very enjoyable dining experience, and I would absolutely recommend it for both the food and the exceptional service.
Everything was great! Stephanie was so kind and attentive to all our requests She gave us the best recommendations. I’ll highly recommend this place and Stephanie’s service. Hoping to come back soon.
We love dining outside here during the warmer months—the outdoor seating adds a lovely touch to the experience. The food is consistently excellent, with a great selection of wines to complement the meal. The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always ensuring a pleasant visit. This is easily one of the best spots to dine on the Upper West Side!
A wonderful experience overall. We were seated promptly and attended with care. Our waitress Stephany was amicable and attentive. The food was delicious. Excellent service.
Austin was an amazing server! Thank you so much for your attentiveness and menu recommendations. We’ve been coming to French Roast for years and look forward to our next visit.
Stephany was fantastic! She was warm, professional, and made sure everything was taken care of. The service felt very personal and welcoming. I truly appreciated the great experience.
French Roast is one of those rare neighborhood gems that never disappoints. I’ve been coming here for years with my mother, my brother, my husband, and even my dog, and the experience is consistently wonderful. The food is excellent whether you’re here for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner. We even brought my husband’s British family, and they were blown away. The atmosphere feels warm and quintessentially Upper West Side. The staff is friendly, service-oriented, and genuinely cares that you have a great meal. I’m a very happy repeat customer and plan to keep dining here for as long as I live. Highly recommend.
I brought my husband here for his 35th birthday. He/we had a great experience. Juan was an amazing guy to work with. He gave great recommendations, was funny and gave a good vibe. The food was amazing! The coq au vin was incredible! Can’t wait to go back! This place has good energy!
Great experience overall! The service was attentive, friendly, and made the whole meal very enjoyable. Stephany B took great care of our table and made sure everything came out smoothly. She checked in at the right moments and had such a positive attitude throughout the visit. It really made the dining experience feel relaxed and welcoming. Would definitely come back again!!!!!!
Our experience was fantastic thanks to Stephany. She handled our table with so much professionalism and kindness, even while the restaurant seemed very busy. She stayed calm, organized, and made sure we were always taken care of. What stood out the most was how thoughtful she was—refilling drinks before we even had to ask and making sure everything with our order was exactly right. Small details like that really make a difference. Stephany truly made the whole dining experience feel easy and enjoyable. You can tell she takes pride in her work. We really appreciated her service and would be happy to have her as our server again.
French Roast is a delight for food, drink, and atmosphere. We Ate brunch at around 1030 AM. Everything was delicious! The Brioche French Toast was light and sweet and the fruit compote added the perfect amount of tart to the meal. The Shakshuka is delightful and full of spices! The Mezcla sausage tastes great, but be-warned it is spicy! The cappuccino was Great! The tight cozy feel with the vibration from the subway passing beneath gives this restaurant that NYC ambiance that’s second to none. Whether you’re a local or visiting Manhattan for the first time this is a great place to stop and eat!
Stephany B provided an amazing experience at French Roast! She was incredibly friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. She checked on us at the perfect times, made great recommendations, and everything came out smoothly. Her positive attitude and professionalism really stood out and made our visit even better. Thank you, Stephany, for the excellent service!
Such a feel good place. We also had the nicest waitress, Maria Alejandra. She had the best energy and was so careful to make sure we got exactly what we ordered. Feels like a little European bistro tucked into the upper west side of New York. Perfect place to meet a friend, spend a rainy afternoon or a Sunday morning. Had such a nice time! Food came out fast and was lovely. Went back again and had the most sincere careful waiter David. He is the nicest person and we had a lovely brunch! Thank you David you are incredible and so warm and wonderful.
We have been coming since the restaurant opened. Less since COVID. The steak quality was excellent and cooked very rare as requested. The Brussels Sprouts were haunting. The wine list is extraordinary but please delete wines not available. A great place for everyone from hipsters to families to older folks. Ed Wallace
French Roast is an underground must-visit restaurant! Food: Get the Pan Roasted Yellowfish Tuna (pictured)! For dessert, I highly enjoyed the mango cheesecake and brownie a la mode (both pictured). Experience: I was warmly greeted by hostess Sheerin and evening manager Betsy at the door! My reservation for 5 was super easy to place, and all table service was speedy and enjoyable thanks to our server, Adam. He made sure allergens were accounted for, and recommended our plates to us! Great start to the new year.

I love coming here for brunch, first time here for Happy Hour - their HH menu is really great for small bites. The service is always excellent, never had a bad experience, from hostess, bar staff to servers, the staff at French Roast is always killing it with their great attitudes and friendly service. Would love to compliment Lena specially, who was very knowledgeable and provided us with some lovely suggestions which helped us enjoy our experience tonight.
French restaurant with great atmosphere and outstanding service. The food is delicious, the steak is very tasty. Also the truffle fries. It’s very busy on Mondays because of the happy hour all night. Drago was bartender that evening, he is very kind and good with the drinks, he also recommended us a very delicious white wine.
It was my first time dinning in a French restaurant in NYC and I absolutely loved it. I ordered the Cassoulet and it was so tasty, so juicy and delicious. Leandro was so kind and sweet when describing the dish itself. Very helpful. I love the whole experience at the restaurant. I’ll come back for sure to try more dishes. 100% recommended!
We love French Roast and our excellent server Yesenia! Today started with an excellent compliment from Yesenia which just brightened my whole day <3. We loved our meal and I’m obsessed with the French fries. But, this story starts long ago, 2 years ago in fact. I was doing my first ever watch through of gossip girl and Nate mentioned he was going to come to French roast for lunch. I immediately saved it in my Google Maps. This is my 2nd visit and it was better than the last. Thank you Yesenia!
First I have to mention that the service was impeccable from the moment we walked in! Our server Lena took care of us and gave us recommendations! We came in for happy hour and started with a couple of drinks and small plates (mussels, potato skins, and cheese plate). All were excellent! We had Coq au Vin and Cassoulet as our entrees. They both hit the spot and provided a level of warmth on a cold autumn night! We cannot wait to return to try the rest of the menu with service so welcoming and outstanding!
Came her for Saturday brunch with some friends. The restaurant is styled as a classic French brasserie and had lots of outdoor seating. The French onion soup and croque madames were perfection. We ate every last bite. Only negative was that one friend had an omelet that wasn’t cooked long enough for the cheese to melt. Overall, the food was delicious. Our server was attentive and friendly. Will definitely be going back to try more!
A visit here brings me back to Paris where you can enjoy delicious food and drinks on the sidewalk watching people go about their daily lives. They have a nice menu and assorted drinks as you would expect. The service was very attentive though not intrusive even though the restaurant was busy. If you’re in the neighborhood you should check it out.

I remember French roast when it was in Greenwich village and was delighted to find it on the UWS. You can’t go wrong here- great food and prices with all the classic dishes
No frills French cafe meets vintage vibe. Came here for the inaugural Forgotten Foods festival that I saw online as I love to travel for food. Off that menu we had the pastry with sweetbreads in the middle and the pheasant. Off the regular menu we had the pheasant. I’m pleased to say the pheasant was marvelous. Great presentation with a glass dome removed upon service. Very moist. The sweetbreads dish was beautiful but unfortunately on this and the escargot somebody in the kitchen was very afraid to use salt, and I typically prefer escargot with more garlic. It could just have been different and personal preference. Great service. Very popular spot.
The escargot and onion soup were quite good—definitely the highlights. The rest of the brunch menu was just okay. I ordered the ‘Friggin Delicious’ cocktail, intrigued by the name and the unique ingredients, but it ended up tasting like a standard Moscow Mule, hence a little disappointment for $18+tax.
4.4/5 rounded down. We are eating smaller portions so thought the Happy Hour menu was perfect for us. We got moules mariniere (mussels in wine sauce), pommes farcies (potato skins), chicken liver pate and truffle fries. All good and well proportion & for $8 each. Complementary delicious bread served with our food. Discounted beer and wine. Atmosphere is lively without being too noisy. Outdoor seating. June 2025
A wonderful place for coffee. I like this place in the winter. A good atmosphere. Got the cappuccino. So good.

Appealing menu, accommodating staff, cozy vibe. Would recommend for breakfast/brunch although there may a wait on Sundays.
Fast and friendly service. Food was a mix of good and bland. Lamb chops was bland but the duck confit was good. ambiance has a cute retro vibe.
Great service, cozy ambiance, and decent, well priced food. A good option for French food without too much pomp and circumstance
