Opinions de Golden Unicorn New York
Just had a party there and the service was very fabulous. They gives us whole 5th floor for our event. Angela was very helpful and help us from the beginning to the end. Off course the food tasted very good and my friend said it tasted as good as Toronto restaurant. Highly recommend for gathering.
Had a strong feeling of wanna some Dim Sum this morning, we went to the restaurant. There were long waiting lines for both outdoor and indoor dining. It just made us feel like a good idea to pick this restaurant, since it’s the first time for us to try here. After about 10ish minutes waiting, quite fast comparing the length of the line, we got seated. Dim sum are pretty good and authentic. Thanks for saving my Chinese stomach today!🥰🥰🥰
Food was delicious. We ordered the vegetable dumplings, sticky buns, steamed piglet buns, and roast pork buns. The sticky buns and piglet buns were definitely the highlights, but all the other food was great too. The tea was also delicious and paired well with our meal. Highly recommend!
FOOD: 1.) Ha gow Shrimp dumpling 2.) Cherng fun long noodle roll 3.) Cha shu Bao = yummy white fluffy outside w sweet inside 4.) Dan tat egg tart = yummy but three very small tarts, flaky crust 5.) jook rice porridge I’ve eaten here many times and I appreciate the dimsum all day and they are one of the rare spots that actually have a ice porridge and long noodle rolls, two of my favorites. Overall the food has always been enjoyable and that’s why if in Manhattan, I will dine here again repeatedly. SERVICE: It’s fine. Always appreciate the bottomless tea at Chinese spots mmm… ATMOSPHERE I also like that they have different levels, I like windows w a bit of a perched high up feeling and overall had a Chinese banquet dining hall feel with the red platform stage in the front for the bride and groom phonic and dragon, the chandelier lighting, white table clothes, round tables, you know.
Keeping it real out here in CT Wish I get to go inside but nonetheless had my first outdoor dimsum experience and was quite a positive experience. Despite limited seating we were able to be seated with very little wait, the ordering process was simple with menu in both English and Chinese. Staff were very patient and professional, even made sure we were warm enough from the heating lamp. We ordered our favorite dishes and they were simply amazing. Times are tough during COVID but this is one place that's doing things right. Will love to visit again soon.
First time returned after COVID starting. Same high quality food! Unfortunately the Dim Sum carts were replaced by ordering via the waiters (but actually much faster to get the hot dishes!). Too full to get only Egg Yolk Bun as dessert - Again, with placing order at table, we could get it as fast as ordered and the egg yolk was still in liquid.
Golden Unicorn is one of the more popular Dim Sum places in NYC. There will be a wait to get in on weekends. Every weekend. If you don’t like waiting for tables, this is not the place for you. Anyone who is complaining about it being crazy busy on Feb 10? It was Lunar New Year AND a weekend. Of course there would be a crazy wait. The food is delicious and I’ve always had friendly servers. Is there sometimes a language barrier? Yes. If that’s something you aren’t willing to deal with- don’t go there. If you want delicious food loves by locals and tourists alike- Golden Unicorn is a great spot!
Came for restaurant week. Value is amazing and the food was delicious! Portion sizes are hearty and the dim sum definitely helps fill you up. We got the Beef with Hot Pepper Over rice. The beef and it's accompanying sauce was very flavorful and tasty. The Braised Bean Curd with Fish Fillet was also really good. So good that my partner who usually hates the fight taste actually loved it. The Spring roll was definitely also one of the best ones I've had. The Baked Pork Pastries is good, but unexpectedly sweet, so just a heads up if you're not familiar with it. Mango jelly is basically mango fruit crossed with jello and was very fresh. The Egg custard is also a nice sweet treat to finish off the meal. Definitely glad I found it on restaurant week, and would definitely come back! Note: the tea apparently isn't complimentary, since we got charged $2 for it, so if you don't drink tea, make sure to mention it, otherwise they just give it to you. The tea was pretty good btw.
Golden Unicorn is a popular Cantonese restaurant in the heart of New York's Chinatown, serving up delicious dim sum and traditional dishes since 1989. This upscale eatery offers a wide range of options, including vegetarian dishes, and is known for its elegant yet traditional red-and-gold décor. The menu features an array of mouth-watering dishes, such as stir-fried beef with rice noodle, minced pork congee, and sesame seed mochi ball. Be sure to try their famous dim sum, including shrimp shumai and steamed pork buns. Reviews praise the attentive service and cozy atmosphere, making it perfect for family dinners or special occasions. However, some patrons have noted that the restaurant can get loud and chaotic, especially during peak hours. Prices range from $20-$30 per person, making it a relatively affordable option for a quality meal. Operating Hours: - Monday to Thursday: 10 AM - 10 PM - Friday: 10 AM - 11 PM - Saturday: 9 AM - 11 PM - Sunday: 9 AM - 10 PM
The very best dim sum in lower Manhattan. Golden unicorn has been a sought after lunch destination within my family since I can remember. It is a vast plane of tables being constantly circumvented by carts packed with the most delicious dumplings. There is always space yet never empty. The rice noodles are transcendent and the pig buns are as cute as they are delicious. Don’t let any new spot fool you, this 1996 top 5 restaurants in nyc NEVER disappoints.
There aren’t too many options for dim sum in Chinatown and the ones available are just average. However, Golden Unicorn is definitely stands out from the rest. The food is fresh and authentic. All the typical dim sum items are available here and cooked perfectly. I especially liked the crispy fried taro dish. It’s lightly fried and maintains its flavor.
Price was reasonable and most of the dishes were served within few minutes. Dim sum was really good and delicious! We were here during weekday, and there were only few tables. We both prefer having a nice and more quiet lunch, so it was perfect for us. Because most of the time those Dim Sum restaurants were packed with people. Anyway, it was very nice and we will visit back soon.
Great dim sum. Huge interior. Instead of the carts going around you now have to check off from a paper menu and hand the list over to staff. Without the visual element of looking at the plates, we massively over ordered, but it was fun anyway. Every dish was freshly made and delicious.
My husband and I had our reception here and it was the best decision we ever made for our guests. I was in contact with Angela regarding the event planning and food selections. The day of the event went better than I anticipated. We had a whole floor reserved for about 75 guests and it was very well decorated. People loved the dim sum dishes, crispy fried chicken, seafood noodles, and broccoli. There was enough food to take home and they provided takeout containers. We were also allowed to play our own playlist through Spotify and the speakers worked very well. Angela and the staff even helped with the cake cutting! Thank you to Golden Unicorn for making our day special.
Amazing food and service. The wait time to get a table is rather long, but it's worth it. It's a really good place for a visit with friends and to try some authentic chinese dumplings. We went on a saturday afternoon and had to wait for an hour to get a table. Must try dishes include their egg yolk buns, a soft bun with a salty and sweet egg yolk inside. The chicken feet were weirdly tasty. The sticky sweet sauce over the soft feet was great. The total cost was much lesser than what I expected.
Golden Unicorn is hands down the best dim sum spot in NYC’s Chinatown! The food is always fresh, flavorful, and authentic. From dumplings to buns, every bite is a delight. The lively atmosphere and traditional cart service make the experience even better. A must-visit for dim sum lovers!
I came here with a few friends around 5PM. We were able to get a seat right away. This was on valentine's day as well. We ordered through menus since it was probably late now so no carts, which was fine. We ordered a fair amount of food and we liked everything we ordered. Some of the items we ordered were chicken feet, shrimp rice roll, shumei, beef rib, shrimp dumpling, and pig buns. The service was also great. I would come here again for Dim Sum.
Yup. The hype is real. Make sure to come early. It’s a whole event waiting downstairs for your number to get called but trust me, if you get there before the lobby is packed you won’t regret it. Everything is delicious. I didn’t know they had a darn Peking duck station making lil buns. I always end my meal w some of the coconut jelly. Thanks golden unicorn!
Wait during weekend lunchtime was horrible and close to an hour. You would imagine that for such a longstanding restaurant they would have the queue system sorted out. The hostesses made a few mistakes with the queue numbers which led some tables to skip numbers, which they admitted to. Food was good though no particular standouts. Waitstaff understood English fine and clientele seemed to veer more towards the Western crowd. Price was not the cheapest, but still cheaper than some dim sum restaurants in Flushing. Siumai - tasted fresh and bouncy Hargao - one of the better hargaos despite the thick dough Xiaolongbao - okay Beancurd - great, but gingered sauce Chicken feet - good Steamed pork - a little porky and had better. Egg tarts - fresh Congee - okay Surprisingly clean bathroom 👍🏼
The food is authentic and delicious, but the waiter’s attitude was disappointing. When I ask questions, it’s hard to understand them, and they respond by yelling or speaking rudely. I understand it may be part of their cultural mannerisms, but it’s still not acceptable to shout back at customers. They even told the customer, “Why did I have to come back to your table twice?” — which was unnecessary. They rushed to take the order without waiting, so I simply asked again, and their response was rude and unprofessional.
Best spring roll I have ever tried. Tasted good without any sauces. We had steamed bean curd skin rolls, bacon rolls, shrimp dumpling, steamed pork dumpling and shrimp rice noodles. The bacon rolls werr very large with a lot of shrimp! They include complementary tea in a traditional style tea pot and cups.
One thing I like about Golden Unicorn is how reliable it is. I mean, I've been coming here occasionally for 15+ years, and I never had an experience that was less than good. This bi-level Chinatown classic is located in the less touristic side of Chinatown east of Bowery. Because of that, lines here may be less crazy than at other dim sum places. It doesn't mean that there won't be a line, but if you arrive here no later than 12 noon your chances of scoring a table in a reasonable timeframe are higher than at other places. On a recent visit on a Saturday we arrived at 12 noon and our party of 3 was seated immediately As always, part of the fun of dim sum is ordering like there's no tomorrow and sampling as many different things as your stomach can handle. All the dim sum dishes were delicious. The only dish I did not particularly like were the xiao long bao/soup dumplings; then again, maybe this is not a dish you necessary order at a dim sum place. Being on the fancier side of dim sum, prices are higher than at other dim sum places, but still very affordable. Unlike most dim sum restaurants, dim sum here is also served at dinner, although I've only been here for lunch.
Golden Unicorn is a classic and iconic dim sum restaurant in New York’s Chinatown, and it truly lives up to its reputation. From the moment you step inside, you can feel the lively energy — families, groups of friends, and visitors from all over having a great time together over steaming carts and shared plates. The experience starts with the dim sum carts rolling around the dining room, just like in old-school Hong Kong. There’s something fun about choosing dishes right off the cart — from shrimp dumplings and pork buns to siu mai and sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves. Every bite feels fresh and flavorful, with satisfying textures and balanced seasonings. What I appreciated most is that Golden Unicorn delivers authentic Cantonese dim sum at a solid quality without being overly fancy. It’s comfort food done right — warm, hearty, and absolutely crave-worthy. Portions are generous, which makes it ideal for sharing with friends or family. The dining room itself is spacious and bustling, with big round tables perfect for groups. Service is efficient and friendly, even during peak lunch hours when the place gets really busy — which it almost always does. Weekends can be crowded, so planning to go a bit earlier or later than peak lunch time helps. The overall atmosphere is lively and social, making it a fun place not just to eat, but to enjoy the communal feel of a traditional dim sum brunch. Overall, Golden Unicorn is a must-try dim sum spot in NYC — unpretentious, delicious, and full of character.
My first DimSum experience, but definitely one that is going to be hard to beat. The place is extremely crowded, full of real Chinese people so you know it's good. Prices are ok for new York standards, 45usd including tax and 20% tip. For a Sunday, arriving at around noon, the wait is totally bearable, around 15/20 minutes for 4 people.
Been here when studying in East coast long while ago and thus want to revisit. Love the interior and spacious seating and of cause the food carts pushing around the tables for you to choose are much fun and missed, most dim sum restaurants not offer the food carts nowadays, even in Asian countries. Food are delicious generally, we enjoyed a lot on all dim sum dishes. We had brunch on a weekday and thus no wait time. However, the second want to revisit on a weekend lunch time, we had waited almost an hour downstairs outside the elevator and still so crowded. Had to change to another nearby dim sum restaurant after an hour wait. Recommend to go on weekdays or go earlier over weekends and prepare for long wait.
ABSOLUTELY the BEST Dim-Sum restaurant in the Northeast area!! Fresh, tasty and very authentic Cantonese cuisine just like what you can find in Hong Kong. Although the dining room could be a bit noisy, the service is actually quite fast/good. Reservations are highly recommended. If you want to just walk-in, it’s better you show up before 11am on Saturday and Sunday. Otherwise you may have to wait up to one hour. They also have a to-go only entrance on the ground floor.
Visited on a Friday at noon. Were seated quickly without a wait. There were plenty of ladies with carts going around which was perfect because my party of 9 came hungry. Food was hot and tasty, especially the short ribs, chicken feet, steamed pork ribs and the bao buns. Will definitely come back when I'm in the NYC area.
I ate at Golden Unicorn in early January because I was craving authentic dim sum while visiting New York, and I’m so glad I came here. This location was recommended by a friend, and it absolutely lived up to the recommendation. While the outside of the restaurant doesn’t initially seem like it’s in the nicest area, the inside is absolutely gorgeous and very eye-catching. The red and gold interior is beautiful and really sets the tone for the experience. We arrived around 2:30 PM and were seated quickly. Almost immediately, the dim sum carts started coming around offering food, with a huge selection to choose from. You’re also provided with a menu that includes photos, which makes ordering very easy, especially if you’re not familiar with the names of certain dishes. The hot tea is complimentary and absolutely delicious, with a great herbal flavor. Everything we tried was excellent, but my favorite items were the soup dumplings and the pan-fried dumplings. The piglet buns were also incredibly cute and fun to try. Service was very attentive and quick throughout the meal. The only minor downside was that there was a large screen in the middle of the restaurant that appeared to be frozen and loading the entire time, but it didn’t take away from the overall experience. We really enjoyed our time at Golden Unicorn and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for authentic dim sum. I would definitely come back for more on my next visit to New York.
My family and I was in NYC to visit from Philadelphia. We have dimsum in PA as well but the experience and the food here taste so much better! Everything was steamed hot in the carts and every dishes was so savory and tasty. They have a wide variety of option and deserts. I definitely recomended the shumai, chicken feet, and the tofu skin rolls. We had a great time here and we’ll definitely come back if we’re in the city the next time!
Very delicious dim sum. Served in an authentic way, with carts around. We got a bunch of small dishes to share and they’re absolutely delicious. Our favorite is the durian dessert 冰皮榴莲, so creamy and fresh. Apparently they make it fresh everyday so they didn’t have it when we first asked for it. The leek dumplings are so good! Lots of ingredients like shrimp, egg and lotus root. Beef tripe with turnip is so refreshing paired up with the chili spicy oil. The tofu wrap is so tasty. Porridge’s absolutely amazing. You can tell it’s freshly cooked and prepared with lots of time. When it comes to the sticky rice dishes, I prefer the pearl one more because it’s softer and with more kinds proteins. The other one is just so plain and rice is dry. Popular place and friendly service!
The restaurant decor was elegant and traditional. There were cart services, which was so cool, and there was so much to try. We had to be mindful, not to eat too much all at once. I liked the egg custard, which was soft and lightly sweet. The mushroom and tufu dish were unbelievably savoury.
This restaurant has a long history and is well-known. They offer a wide variety of dim sum and Cantonese dishes, with many being quite good. However, since the menu is extensive, not every dish stands out equally. It's best to focus on their signature dishes recommended by the staff. Additionally, their service is professional, and the spacious dining environment enhances the overall experience.

Born and raised New Yorker here. Hands down one of the best restaurants for dim sum in NYC! Must ask for Shumai and Har Gow (shrimp dumplings) The food cart is always coming around. Great Dim Sum experience.
Golden Unicorn is a classic dim sum spot that delivers an authentic and enjoyable dining experience. I loved the tradition of sitting down and selecting dishes from the carts that roll by. The shrimp dumplings were delicious with a tender, juicy filling. I was excited to see they have 豆腐花 (douhua / tofu hua) It’s not something you see everywhere. The food was good but overall the restaurant ambiance feels old and not that clean. Also get here early as the wait on weekends is quite long.
Pretty decent dim sum place. Atmosphere was a mix of Chinese and Caucasian, but taste was fairly authentic. Atmosphere felt authentic, unfortunately servers also authentically unresponsive. Biggest complaint was the temperature of the food coming out of the kitchen. Everything felt like it was a little colder than it should have been. The thing I was most impressed with is the egg tart. Legit one of the best egg tarts I’ve ever had, I’ve lived in China for 3 years of my life and have also been to Portugal for their Nate. This is surprisingly up there, not sure if they get it from a bakery or make it themselves.
This is one of my favorite dim sums in Chinatown. Food wise, it's very similar to other places. The key with dim sum is to go to a busy place so they have fresh carts coming out regularly. Though one of the special dishes here is the pork pastry which is incredible if you can handle the sweetness and it's not available at all dim sum restaurants. I also like the space which is a big communal room which we've got one less of now that the original Jing Fong closed. On this visit on 12/12/21, they didn't have as many carts out as usual and some items came from the kitchen a bit cold. I ordered the usual things plus also the black pepper short ribs to try something new, but it was just ok and I wouldn't order it again.
Golden Unicorn used to be our go to-to place for yum cha about 10 years ago - once covid hit they seemed to struggle and we stopped going. We happened to be in the neighborhood today and decided to give them another try and so so happy we did. The refurb they did a few years ago has come with a clear focus on improved service and I'm happy their dim sum is once again super yummy and authentic. We will definitely be back!!!!
Dimsum is pretty good. The selections are shrinking comparing to my last visit years ago. Service is actually good. The only downside is the lobby waiting queue and seating priority. Weekends are terrible with hour long wait for a semi large group, but with plenty small tables available.
A nice, unassuming exterior opens to a ornate dining room with very attentive staff and good dim sum. Not my favorite in the city, but still very good and hits the spot when you need it downtown.
I initially recieved a recommendation to come here for dim sum since we were going tk chinatown. It was a little hectic getting the table and then we were pretty much ignored by the waitstaff until what appeared to be one of the managers basically waited on us the whole time. He was a good one too because he made sure to pay attention to the tables that were getting ignored. The food was delicious and we really enjoyed it here! We had all of our favorites and there wasn't anything to complain about!
Overall, this was a really nice place and food was delicious and very fresh. The only issue we encountered was that there was a lack of vegetarian/vegan options when it comes to the dim sum choices and the regular plates are pretty pricey if ordering for a single person.
Our normal go-to place for dim sum. We get our usual steamed clams, tripe, pork ribs and shrimp shumai. I know many people do not like tripe. You have to try it here. They make sure it’s clean, fresh and drown it in garlic and oil—-perfection. Our return trip upgraded to 4 stars….service was A+ and food was great as always. Return trip on 02.26.2023: Had a good experience as always. Food was good…service a bit slow, but still good….no complaints, still our place to go for Dim Sum
Great place if you're with a group. They even accommodated one of us who has a true gluten allergy. The food is good but not mind-blowing. But you're really only going here for the experience and the atmosphere. I should add that the staff were wonderful, and even without a reservation there was not much of a wait. You might be seated with other people at your table but that's part of the experience.
I booked a table for nine here for Christmas night dinner with close friends and family. I've been here many times for dim sum brunch - that experience is lovely, chaotic and a wait. Dinner is quieter, still delicious but weirdly. We spoke mandarin to the wait staff the entire night, but it felt like we were speaking two different languages. Also, last order for dinner was at 7.45pm for a restaurant that is supposed to close at 10? Not sure if it was just because it's Christmas (but the whole point was that Chinese people don't celebrate Christmas?). Anyway, the food was delicious Chinese banquet staples done right, but the standout was the deep fried pork chop with Peking sauce - the batter was beautifully crisp even after being so thorougly soaked in the sweet and sour sauce. Noms. 1. Deep Fried Pork Chop with Peking Sauce 2. Peking Duck (Whole Duck) with Pancake, Scallions, and Cucumbers 3. Crispy Chicken with Garlic and Special Soy Sauce (Half) 4. Jumbo Shrimp with Walnut and Mayonnaise 5. Ma Po Tofu 6. Sautéed American Broccoli with Garlic Sauce 7. Yang Chow Fried Rice
Nice place for dim sum in a huge indoor dining room. Tables are well spaced as well. The good was tasty and there was a good selection on the menu however a few of our dim sum were slightly cold which did affect the taste. Think we were unlucky here as other tables had steaming dim sum as expected. Nonetheless a nice visit!
Place is mostly good for out of towners, gwai los, and big events. Food and service are good but prices are too high. As a local, I wouldn't come here unless it's a special occasion. You can find good dim sum and other comparable restaurants for much lower prices within the Chinatown area.
For Chinatown in New York, which should be the pinnacle, the food was only fair. Shrimp seemed slightly undercooked and didn’t taste strictly fresh, and the sticky rice lacked flavor or many discernible bits of sausage. Shu Mai were good. Service was pleasant, and I liked the old school ambiance and cart service, especially where they fry your dumplings tableside. Google suggested there might be a wait on a Saturday afternoon, but I got right in.,
Price: On the pricey side. Three of us ate for 70$ after tip and we didn’t eat that much. My aunt told me it’s more expensive here than other dim sum places. Food: Food was good, pretty fresh but nothing insane to brag about, other than it wasn’t bad. Service: The manager helped clean tables and dim sum carts were ready and available. Environment: Because the cost is higher here, there was no wait. We went to another spot and it was at minimum a 30 minute wait. Tables were clean when we arrived and table placement wasn’t too crowded.
A solid dim sum spot with a good selection of dishes and experience of the large banquet hall seating. We stopped here for lunch, ordering a number of dishes to try and share. Based on portion sizes, this was probably enough to share for three, but plenty for two. The dishes were flavorful, cooked well and filling. The service was great, as they were able to seat us with relative ease and took our order and brought the dishes out efficiently. Pricing was reasonable too.
Very fancy Chinese restaurant In our case the food was nice and tasty The only thing we did not like it is they do not have baby changing pads or any space for it. My husband got the pork with Pekín spice and he really enjoyed it I had rice with veggies and it was really nice The portions are big The tea in the table it is exquisite
I’ve been coming to Golden Unicorn for at least 7–8 years, and overall I’ve always had good experiences. Prices are very reasonable for New York, especially considering you can enjoy solid, traditional dim sum. Compared to previous years, I feel the quality has slightly declined and the service is a bit less attentive than it used to be. That said, the food is still good and the value remains strong. I would still recommend it if you’re looking for good dim sum in NYC at a fair price.
A nice spot in Chinatown. We didn’t have to wait on a Friday evening. The food was really good here! When we went, there were only dim sum dishes available and a few options off of the normal menu. The chicken was delicious. The buns and dim sums were quite good. The staff is friendly. In terms of interior design, there is a little much going on.
It was a family and friends dinner the day before the wedding. We all shared the dishes that came rapidly one after another. The food was fresh and tasty. I personally liked steamed shrimp dumplings. For desert, we had puffed sesame balls with lotus seeds paste, and red beans soup. I never had it before, and i liked it. I never saw the menu because it was arranged and paid by groom and bride. Thank you very much, J&J 😊
Golden Unicorn is one of the few restaurants still doing cart service for dim sum. I'll be honest as a non-Chinese Asian person, I usually avoid these kind of places because I feel a little bit at the mercy of the cart ladies. It's exactly this way here, but it does make it fun. And the experience is more about the fun than the food. The dim sum is ok. Not super hot sometimes, but it happens...it's getting wheeled around the dining room. My usual faves at dim sum are basic - har gow (we did have a pretty good shrimp dumpling, but not sure if it was har gow), sui mai (solid) and turnip cake (not very good - not fried enough so lacked the crispy end bits. The service is what you expect and I don't mind it, but if you're unsure...service is pretty businesslike without a lot of niceties. There are better dim sum restaurants around, but still fun. If you're going for food...I would head to Sunset Park or Flushing.
Golden Unicorn remains an authentic dim sum place where you can still see staff pushing traditional carts through the aisles. It is a significant improvement since my last visit a few years back; the 3F interior offers beautiful Hong Kong / Chinese wedding vibes, perfect for family gatherings. You must try the shrimp Shumai — we ordered several rounds. While the atmosphere feels like Lunar New Year, the toilets need attention. They are too few, tiny, and crowded, which doesn't quite match the elevated feel of the dining floor. Overall, a great festive spot for a group meal.
Golden Unicorn delivers a genuinely traditional dim sum experience that feels increasingly rare. The classic dim sum carts rolling through the dining room and the seasoned auntie servers calling out dishes add an authentic, nostalgic charm that immediately sets the tone. It feels like stepping into a long-standing family gathering rather than a curated restaurant concept. The food is comforting and familiar, offering a homey, traditional Asian meal that prioritizes heritage over trends. Portions are generous, flavors are straightforward, and the overall experience emphasizes warmth and community. Golden Unicorn is a place that honors tradition and provides a reassuring sense of continuity for those seeking classic dim sum done the old-fashioned way.
It’s been quite awhile since I last visited Golden Unicorn, and I must say that the ambiance has noticeably improved. Including the restroom 😅 We were on the second floor and the dining area is less cluttered and is culturally appealing. I am very glad to see that the dim sum dishes are still served through the push carts. Wish there were more places that offered this. The dishes were all tasty but the waitstaff forgot to place an entree that we ordered. They were also slow in bringing utensils that we requested. Nonetheless, we still had a wonderful time celebrating the Year of the Horse.

Dim sum parlor on the edge of Chinatown. You mark up a menu and they take it away and your food arrives within a few minutes. Generally the dumplings are good and the prices are very reasonable.

My friend told me the quality is not that outstanding compared to the past. However, I still gave a try.. it turned out, yes, my friend might be right, or my expectation was too high. Dim sum was overall normal. Tastes didn’t hit my preference, slightly oily and dull. Servers were kinda rushing around. They almost dripped sauce on our cloth. I hope they could be more carefully..!
Pre covid I had visited the Golden unicorn many times. I returned yesterday with a relative. The staff was very friendly and accommodating but the food was not as good as I remembered. 4 carts- 2 dessert-1-pork1- seafood. I remember there being many more choices and many more steamed dumplings on carts. O will try someplace else on my next visit. BYW- bokchoi was $21.
We went to this place because we had read that their dumplings were incredible. They were good. But the rest was not so positive. The staff were quite rude, before we even sat down, a man trew three flyers (we were five) and a pen on the table. Then he come back after like 30 seconds and asked if we were ready to order. It was unclear if we are supposed to fill in one flyer each or one for all or how many dumplings you get. We felt stressed and not very welcome, and it's not like the place was fully booked...
A large restaurant in the Chinatown serving an assorted dishes. Very well organized menu, everything was shown with accompanied pictures, helping diners to order food quickly. We found the food quality was "average" at best. Nothing stood out, nothing was so "authentic". Not enough condiment for each dish. We had to ask for black pepper, and were told it was not available. Overall it is just a large Chinese restaurant for the mass. Nothing to write home about, really. It is simply not an unicorn, let alone a golden one.
A Dim Sum restaurant in Chinatown - NYC🗽🥟 The food here is delicious but the service is lacking. Atmosphere: The restaurant space is located on the 2nd floor and is accessed by way of elevator. Each floor has something different such as an event space and store. When you first walk into the restaurant, you find yourself in the beautifully decorated dining area. Service: Our service wasn’t of the best quality. We’d ask our waiter about ordering some dishes that we saw being brought out to other guests, and he’d just look at us and then walk away. He wasn’t helpful nor seemed to care how he treated us and in the end just avoided us. We had to ask other workers for help. Menu items: The food here on the other hand is delicious. They’ll bring around carts with different food items to choose from. Once you decide on what you want, they’ll stamp a sheet of paper to keep track so that you can continue to pick as many items as you want. The restaurant in and of itself is very nice with so many great food options. The service here makes the whole experience unenjoyable.
This was our first time having traditional dim sum so we were not at all sure what to expect. We went in the wrong door and got yelled at, so be sure to use the entrance on East Broadway. Enter and you will be directed to the take the elevator to either the 2nd or 3 floor dining room. Once you reach your floor, you are directed where to sit. Tea will be presented at the table. Then carts will be rolled over to the table and you be asked what you want. There is a card at the table that the staff check off for anything you decide to have placed on your table. This is how the bill is tallied. When we asked for some sauces, the cart pusher yelled and said that the waiter would bring that, but no waiter ever approached our table, brought us any kind of sauces, or offered water or other drinks. The cart pusher very angrily gave us a small container of soy sauce after we asked again, muttering something under her breath. She was not happy with us. We later did see a cart with water and sodas, but it never came to our table and we were ready to leave by then. How often the carts make their rounds we could not determine. At first the carts came one after another, but then there was none for a bit. Some of the items served were not hot. Service was fine but quite sterile and unfriendly, although one lovely cart pusher laughed when we interacted with her. That was nice. It was a fun and uniq ue experience and we were glad to get to try many different things. Clean and beautiful restrooms and nicely decorated large dining areas. Overall 3.5 stars.
The steamed and baked pork buns were great and flavorful. I found the dumplings to be underwhelming and as that’s my favorite part of dim sum I was bummed by this. I am not a big fan of the roving carts as it can take awhile to get certain dishes and the price of each dish isn’t known until the very end. I also found the carts to be stressful as it was hard to understand what servers were saying due to the noise in the restaurant and a language barrier. Service was also not great and we would have to flag down servers and repeatedly ask for things like water or sauces for the table. When we sat down we were provided with a pot of tea but no waters and we weren’t even asked about drinks. There were 6 of us and with tip with each paid $26, which is a great deal for the amount we ate. It was good for the experience but I personally wouldn’t go back.
This is your typical noisy, family gatherings, HK style dim sum place. It has several floors and the dim sum is wheeled out on the silver carts. Unfortunately the carts never got to us at the tables by the windows and were very very slow and some dim sum were served cold. After waiting for 40 mins, the manager / supervisors had to come round to all our tables and just took our orders instead of waiting for the carts to come round. The portions were good but flavour is so so.

I had higher expectations for this place. Last time I went about 2 years ago it was way better! Now there is only a few option on the menu. My soup came very cold and to be honest it was very good. My soup dumplings had holes in them so when I got the dumplings I didn’t get any soup all the soup was splattered all over the place. This place use to be much better. Do not recommend.
Bad to average quality of dim sum. The dim sum skins were a bit thick and most were over steamed resulting in a pasty taste. Ordered the xiao long bao (soup dumpling). It was over steamed and had burst resulting in no soup and they actually thought they could serve it up. I had to send it back to the kitchen. Ordered a simple garlic stir fried bok choy... some of them were still raw.
Please avoid their takeout section. It was only 2pm but nothing was available as i kept asking about items. Lady there told me she will need to get it upstairs so why bother opening till 2pm? It was crazy expensive and not that great of quality. I paid $13 for 2 items. The takeout section also looks half rented to a non food business so dont know what theyre doing.
Golden Unicorn is very mediocre. And super expensive. I used the Google reviews to pick the restaurant, but I don't agree this restaurant deserves 4 stars. There are tons of better Dim Sum spots in Chinatown. The room is super loud and the environment is chaotic. Definitely not a spot to chill for lunch. The food was plain and not tasty. Pretty much zero service- you have to raise your hand to get any server's attention. The other tables were literally screaming at the servers. The price is outrageous for Chinatown. I would never recommend this restaurant to others.

Staff needs better training. One waitress was very unprofessional and rude. We had to ask repeatedly for water and missing utensils (and she would bring the wrong items). She talked behind our back about how foreign customers were just annoying in Cantonese but we could understand her well. Will not come back. Food is ok but nothing special.
Booked for a 22 person BUSINESS lunch, confirmed 3 times, YET THEY LOST MY RESERVATION. Shameful . LOW LIGHTS: 1. Booked res one month in advance and confirmed with restaurant 3 times, yet when we arrived they were unable locate reservation 2. I had confirmed table set up via email (3 tables) and we arrived the tables were not set up, my entire department including bosses had to stand there while restaurant made two tables of 10 to cram 22 of us into. 3. Upon arrival I was told to wait in downstairs lobby until 12pm. 4. At 12pm I was told to wait downstairs until the remaining 18 people arrived! Seriously? Pathetic. 5. This restaurant is not suitable for corporate gatherings, totally disorganized, untrustworthy and unreliable.
Okay guys, let me start of with the good part. Peking Duck was very good, the restaurant is quite pretty and the rest of the food was good (not mindblowing). BUT. The service was absolutely horrible!!!! Never ever have I experienced something like this.. some servers dont speak any english, and they were pissed at us, that we dont speak chinese. Then they just put 4 plates of freaking pig stuff on out table, even though we wanted Peking Duck, they didnt even ask us if we wanted it, they gave us two choices, between shrimp and pig to choose from. They didnt ask for our wishes. So we ended up with a bill 40 bucks more expensive then if we only had our duck and the waiter who could speak english, said „You guys ordered too much food“, man we didnt order this, it was forced on us.
Food was okay but the service left a bitter aftertaste. We went for dinner at 6pm on Monday and it was not crowded at all. We were seated promptly and after we ordered we waited just a short while for our food to be served. After finishing most of the food which was very average but acceptable to us, we asked if they were going to serve the chopped up Peking Duck and the waitress’ reply was very rude. She said something like “you think we will eat the duck ourselves? Just have to wait for it, you do not know???” It was totally uncalled for and her remark was offensive to us. We merely asked if the dish was coming soon(as we had young children whom were tired and were deciding if we should just takeaway the last dish as we had already finished everything else.) Frankly, we lost our appetite after that shocking exchange. We paid a lot for the food and really expected better service. Such a disappointing experience. We are never going back. Better to go elsewhere where the service staff is more polite and kinder.
We had dinner here and ordered wonton soup, bao, xiaolongbao, and a few other dim sum dishes. Everything tasted fairly standard, nothing memorable. However, later that evening we both experienced stomach pain and clear digestive issues, which strongly points back to this meal. We’re confident it came from here. This raises serious concerns about freshness and hygiene. Even if the food seems “classic” at first, feeling sick afterward is not acceptable. Unfortunately, based on this experience, we wouldn’t recommend it.
Went to Golden Unicorn for the first time a little before 10:30am and as soon as we got off the elevator we were rushed to a table. We couldn’t even fully get our coats off before the dim sum carts came insisting we get something. It was 3 of us, they put 1 random to go menu on the table and that was it. No server, no explanation of how to order, just a constant push to get food. We had to ask the women multiple times to slow down and allow us to order with one woman becoming visibly annoyed. We literally had to ask for water. The dim sum was good but the lack of hospitality here ruined everything and we ate what we had and left. It was just a bad first experience and I will never come back.
