Edit 6 months later- went back for a bagel and scallion cc and it was good with a generous amt of cc. Also nice to get a sample of their babka. A sweet surprise from really nice staff who got to know their customers. Bumped up the scores Original review: Granted, I just had a bialy but it was just fine. The flow of the line wasn’t great, like ordering your bagel, then ordering coffee with the cashier, paying and then having to go back to grab the coffee from a different person. It seems overhyped but I’ll try their bagels and schmear before deciding The good things: line moved fast, the interior is nice and there were ample seats inside

R
Ross Wishnick

Not only was it ready on time but it was ready a few minutes before I got there and that was 5 minutes after I ordered it and that was at 12:25

T

Amazing! Super delicious bagels and coffee! Will be back:)

E

Chewy flavorful bagels, delicious tuna worthy of buying over making at home, creamy lox that rivals Zabars, and a friendly staff. We’re so happy to have Kossars in the neighborhood.

M
Mustafa Gatollari

So good I ate everything before I even thought to take a picture. Bialys were delicious, got an everything nova bagel and it was phenomenal. You have to do a lot to stand out as a bagel shop in New York and this place definitely does. Love it

My favorite way to start the morning. Especially 6AM-ish runs to my local Kossar’s.

P
Private Person

Great bagels, bialys, babka and ruggelah. Good range of bagels, shmears and sandwich fillers. Good coffee. The line moves fast as they have lots of hands working, especially on weekend mornings. A nice addition to the neighborhood. Oh, and you must try a pletzle at least once. The best "deal" on the menu!

J
Judith Siegel

Arrived 6:50 a.m., short line, much longer by the time I ordered and departed. Taste tested shortly after - warm, delicious bialies, best bagels in the area, delicious white fish salad....Clean, bright, good staff. Great addition to the neighborhood.

E
Eric Obenzinger

Fresh, warm and tasty. Bagels are slightly soft but still chewy. Bialys are delightful (and I've never been a bialy person). Also the best tofu cream cheese I've had.

A
Antonina P.

Great bagels! We have a tradition of getting bagels every Friday but our usual place recently got docked during the inspection, which made us look elsewhere. Glad we found Kossars!

T
Tammy Jackson

Their bagels are huge and were a pleasure to eat after toasting at home. Best bagels I have had in a while.

Excellent bagel with cream cheese - best I had in NYC. Very busy place with crowded tight tables.

Kossars makes true NYC bagels and bialys with great spreads, fantastic fresh squeezed OJ and a nice selection of sweet baked goods. The staff is always very nice and efficient.

Kossar’s bagels hit the spot—super fresh, and delicious. Great place to swing by if you’re craving a classic NYC bagel.

The food is fresh and classic, the service very efficient, both dine-in and delivery. Good vegan and vegetarian options. It's such a great addition to the neighborhood.

We got the Classic sandwich and the pastrami salmon sandwich, both with everything bagels. The bagels were fresh and great in quality. Both the sandwiches tasted very good. I have to say that this was the best bagel I had ever had! They also have tons of cream cheese spreads and they look delicious. We also got a freshly squeezed orange juice which was good. This is a must visit place if you're in New York.

Kossar's has the most delicious bagels and bialys and the staff is extremely friendly. Join their rewards program for special discounts. I got 5$ off today for my birthday, but it was the sweet "Happy Birthday!" wishes from the man who made my bagel sandwich and the two lovely ladies who made my coffee and rang me up that was the real treat!

F
Frank Juliano

These are consistently the BEST bagels in NYC! And the staff’s always friendly and helpful. It’s a pleasure and a treat to shop here.

W

Not fancy, just the best bagels - and, of course, bialys. If you've never heard of a bialy or tried one, it's worth going out of your way

Delicious!!! The egg, bacon cheese bagel was divine. Would definitely come back.

My delivery was on time and packed very well. The bialys were delicious, the chicken salad was delicious and the cheese danish was delicious!! It was my first delivery but it won't be my last. ps: delicious means SO GOOD.

Delicious gluten free bagel. Visited everyday I could. Sooo yummy

New to the hood and still needing to work some kinks out but food is delish!! Be patient and please know what you want before you get to the counter. If you are on the line you have plenty of time to prepare!

E

Good place. What a New York bagel should be. We had an everything bagel with some lox cream cheese.it wasn't too doughy or too thin. Place has a nice vibe, like an old school place where old people have second dates. Service is very efficient. I would go back.

J
Joanne Jahr

This was the second order I had delivered from Kossar's. Both times, including today's order, I received exactly what I ordered and both times the order arrived faster than I expected. Fresh and delicious. Easier ordering online than standing on an out-the-door line at the shop. UPDATE: on my way home from an appointment I saw there was no line and I stopped in. Got a delicious grilled chicken with bacon, lettuce, and tomato on a ciabatta for lunch; my usual orders of white fish salad and baked salmon salad (highly recommend both) and some assorted cream cheeses (the lox cream cheese excellent).

Kossar's Bagels is the spot. I just moved to the neighborhood a few months back and I’m already what you might call… a loyalist. Some weeks I’m there once. Other weeks, it’s daily. And honestly? It’s never not worth it. Yes, the bagels are great. Yes, the wraps are solid. Yes, even the shakes hit. But let’s be real — I come for the babka. Chocolate babka. The kind that makes you forget what day it is. I was on what can only be described as an “all-Kossar babka diet” for a bit there. I’ve since dialed it back (summer weight check-in), but the love remains. The biggest reason I keep coming back though? The service. So many bagel shops in NYC move fast, but lose all warmth. Not here. At Kossar's, they remember faces and stories. They learn your name. They chat, while somehow keeping the line moving like a well-oiled machine. It’s personal without being performative. And that’s rare. Most spots in this city treat you like a number unless you’re a regular. At Kossar's, they treat everyone like a regular. It’s like Cheers, but instead of a bar, you walk out with a bagel and a smile. Go for the food. Stay for the people. Come back for both. Five stars. If I had to nitpick it gets too darn busy sometimes, but that's a compliment in itself.

J
Julie

I was enticed by the smell of baking bread from the sidewalk. While the line was long, it moved fast. I ordered a BEC on toasted poppy seed bagel with extra crispy bacon. I am not usually fond of BEC on a bagel. This was amazing. The cheese was melted perfectly and plenty of egg and bacon. The request for extra crispy bacon was honored and the workers were efficient and courteous.

I'm originally from NY and have been living in Atlanta for 25 years. We do not have delis in ATL regardless of what you may have heard. I happened to be in NYC the other day for work and stopped at Kossar's to bring back my beloved dozen bagels & dozen bialys, 2 loaves of babka, and rugelach. I had so much deli that I had to pay to check my carryon luggage. It was well worth it. I'm only sharing my stash with my sister as this is too good to share with just anyone.

K

Fantastic neighborhood spot- so glad it is finally opened! Got there at 6:45am- no line, great service, and walked out with a half dozen bagels. Looking forward to future visits!

Great to have a new bagel place on the UWS. Perfect place to stop before exploring Riverside Park.

M
Miraj Shah

Best bagel and sandwich on UWS by far. Beats Broad Nosh, Bagel & Co, Tal, Bagel Talk, Zuckers, and even PopUp (sandos are essential come on), have tried them all. Friendliest staff and great service. The vibe in there is comfy too, nice place to sit. Fresh OJ is great too.

G
GlaminNYC

I know the downtown Grand St location so this new UWS spot was enticing. Went today and so happy I did - my bagel had a crisp exterior and chewy interior. Bliss! I also asked for a schmear of cream cheese which was a proper schmear (rather than a brick of cream cheese). PS: Kudos to the hard working staff who worked lightning fast for the rather long line.

I
Ina Li

New location in UWS serving fresh bagels and bread, pastries, juices and smoothies. The classic lox sandwich with everything bagel was delicious but the pletzel we tried was a bit tough in texture. Friendly and streamlined service.

A

Very cute bagel shop. Good variety of bagels and cream cheeses. Smoothies are good as well. I enjoyed the nova sandwich.

Great! Highly recommend their Pastrami Sandwich.

A great place to get bagel and cream cheese. Very delicious. The sundried tomato and Asiago and Jalapeno cream cheese were very good. They had a couple of vegan cream cheese which got me excited.

I get takeout orders on my way to work and they are always impeccably packaged with no leaking of coffee or smoothie. Everything I’ve tried has been tasty. Always a fresh avocado. Best black and white cookie I’ve had in nyc. It’s clear the employees are paying attention to the little details and everything is always spot on.

M

The quality of food - either single orders or catering - is always excellent. A bit expensive but worth it. The location is really a small deli with a few tables, but very pleasant.

R
Robert Volinsky

These are the best most authentic New York bagels. The spreads, babka, coffee, muffins are all delicious.

D
Danny K

This is a great addition to an already crowded field of bagel options on the UWS. But $2 bagels are a bit more expensive than other places, and after going several times I have not had the luck of getting a hot one. The bagels taste pretty good. However, I’m not a big fan of the interior of their bagels, which tends to be airy and fluffy but they do have the chew that I desire in a traditional New York bagel. The bialies are terrific and being able to get a fresh onion or garlic bialy is not so easy, even in this neighborhood. Also, I very much appreciate that they offer an everything whole wheat, which is rare, as well as several flavors of nondairy cream cheese. Again, as far as prices, $5.25 for a bagel and cream cheese is up there, but you get what you pay for and this place is a premium brand. I found most people waiting are getting sandwiches and things made, rather than a bag of bagels and bialies like me, and for this reason, the line tends to move a bit slowly. But the quality is good enough that people are willing to wait. That said, 3 guys fielding orders and having to make each one really does slow things down. They could probably use another person or two to speed up the line when it gets busy, which seems to be often in the morning and midday. Overall, glad this place finally made it to the neighborhood, despite my critiques.

M
Mudit Singhal

In a sea of bagels, having tried multiple places in NYC, this institution stands out when it comes to the freshness, texture, quality and variety of food. Simplicity of the food here screams!! OJ, Sesame bagel with scallion cream cheese, and some coffee - this is heaven!

G
Gerrie Hall

Kossars onion bialys cannot be beat. So good. For lunch I had the avocado sandwich. Really delicious with a bit of spice!

C

Delicious cheese choices. Bacon egg and cheese -> try different cheese.

Best bagel I’ve had in New York. Jalapeño Asiago cream cheese is incredible. The music is relaxing, and the staff are very friendly. Idk man the place just stood out to me - highly recommend!

A
Alice Guarisco

Definately my favourite bagel place in the neighborhood. I tried both take out and dine in. The quality of the food is great, tons of cream cheese options! the restaurant has a few tables, they are quite small. It gets BUSY quickly, so finding a spot in rush hours isn't always easy. I've seen the line wrapping around the corner but they are also very fast. They have another location as well in UWS, and I once placed my order for pickup in the wrong location and they managed it internally and still gave me my lunch. Absolutely love this place.

Kossars on West End Avenue and 72nd Street is worth visiting, especially if you’re hungry. I love their bialys and they also have delicious cream cheese spreads. However, recently Kossar’s Black and White Cookies ( $4.95) were rated among the top 3 in NYC! Naturally, I had to buy one and it’s definitely pheny!

This place is a staple in the Upper West Side of Manhattan! It is also a total gem and a must go, super authentic and delicious! I took everything Togo and they were so sweet to me. They even sent me with a totally scrumptious and fresh slice of their famous chocolate babka to try and it was incredible. Everything I wanted it to be and more, I also got a black and white cookie to extra celebrate my Seinfeld fandom. Add this place to your bucket list and make a point to go! I enjoyed so much their everything bagel with a schmear of their creamy salmon and shallots, omg my mouth is watering again even thinking about it. It was incredible and I cannot wait to go back to New York and run to Kossar’s because it seriously was so good. Thank you so much for all the treats and the bonus bread, I loved all of it and the experience was wonderful!

Kossar’s continues its undefeated streak in the Jewish deli game. I ordered the chicken salad BLT on an everything and I swear it was one of those bites where you look around the room like, did everyone else know it could taste this good? Perfect crunch, perfect seasoning, perfect ratio. Elite sandwich execution. Constance went classic with the OG Kossar’s and basically stopped talking after the first bite, which is always a good sign. Watching her fall in love with a bagel in real time was honestly half the fun.

Perfect spot for a bagel and watching the world go by in UWS. So much choice! Great service, didn't wait too long. Loved the fresh orange juice by the register as well.

Recommendation from my son - excellent spot for lunch - pumpernickel and olive cream cheese bagel and a black & white cookie. Place was hoppin' and staff friendly.

This was our second attempt at getting a bagel while on vacation to see family in New York City, and by far exceeded our expectations. Two of us had breakfast sandwiches (one with pastrami, one classic, bacon, egg, and cheese) and two of us had classics (everything with schmear, whitefish salad) and ALL were impressed. They even threw a free black & white cookie in. The bagel quality and flavors exceeded our expectations and blew the other bagel place out of the water (unnamed to protect them here, but if you come across a “best upper west side bagels” list, maybe done believe it!)

I’m literally obsessed with this place after one take out order. I tried their gluten free everything bagel and lox and loved loved loved. It has to be one of the best gluten-free bagels I’ve had and I wanna say they made it themselves. It doesn’t feel like they bought a pack from the store just to accommodate people that eat gluten-free. Also the lox were luscious and everything paired well together in the bagel. I can’t wait to come back. Highly recommend!! Pro tip: order pick up ahead of time to skip the line when you get there on the weekend.

Ok, so I have high hopes for bagels any time I go into the city, and Kossar's actually surpassed the platonic ideal of what a bagel could be that I have in my head. My ideal bagel is one with a hardy crust and a chewy inside but not doughy -- super bready bagels just don't do it for me. I ended up ordering a pumpernickel everything bagel, toasted, with vegetable cream cheese (although the cucumber dill cream cheese my friends ordered was also delicious). The bagel had a generous serving of cream cheese, was toasted well, and most importantly, the everything seasoning on the bagel was flavorful and just the right amount of salty. Additionally, I purchased a loaf of their chocolate babka. I quite literally carried that thing around like it was my newborn child: It was precious cargo that needed to be protected at all costs. Kossar's is a MUST visit if you like the kind of bagel that I described earlier. I will 100% be adding this to my must-visits when I go see friends in the city.

By far one of the best bagels my wife and I have ever had. The experience when you get inside is inviting with a bunch of bagel flavors and friendly staff. I got a plain bagel with bacon and chive cream cheese and it was absolutely fantastic. The bagels was made super fresh and was very fluffy. Many locals on online recommened this place over Russ and Daughters and I'm glad I listened!

Incredible place with a great attention. You may have to wait a little to order your bagel but once you’re inside it’s quick. The food is amazing, I ordered the BLT bagel and it was really really good. I recommend ordering the orange juice, one of the best.

Not much of a bagel person but was attracted by the long line on a Sunday morning. The shop looks authentic and decided to try a bagel. To my surprise, the shop is very vibrant and fast pace. Fresh cream cheese of various flavors are displayed like tubs of ice cream in the chilled shelf and look amazing. Got a pumpernickel bagel that's loaded with cream cheese. Also very surprised to find freshly squeezed orange juice that completed the hearty natural breakfast. Very very yummy. An excellent find just because I was nosy 🤣. Will definitely revisit 😎

ramahawk 13

Very good food at OK prices. Not really a spot to eat in, just a few tables (and the music was incredibly loud when I was there). It's more for take out. But the bagels are good, the selection of baked goods is great, and generally a delicious option.

M
Milo M

My iced chai was great but the cheese pocket I ordered was a cheese danish. I thought it would be a savory pastry, but it was a standard sweet cheese danish, which I really dislike. I suggest to the owners to re-label the food to fit the correct expectation.

M
Michael L

Relatively new bagel place when we visited. A little bit more expensive, but the bagels are good. The Kossar classic (bit more pricey, but worth the cost), and the scallion bacon spread are great. The bagels had a great combination of crispy, fluffy, and chewy - very tasty!

E
Enrique Gonzalez

Stopped in to try their bialys, which are normally a favorite in our house. We tried the onion bialy & garlic. Both were tasty, but the texture was a bit off. Would certainly come back and try again though!

K
Kseniia K

Nice bagels, very helpful staff, but horrible orange juice. First time I tried it I was sure it’s a box juice. Took me some time to realize that it’s a fresh squeezed juice that just sat on the counter for a looooong time. So avoid.

E
Electronics Guru

$9 b.e.c. Gonna have to return and pickup one of their pletzels. No bottled drinks, needs rubbish bin by the door. Tables and chairs felt like they were from temu very wobbly and cheap and un-level for brand new tables and chairs. No signage where to order. Weird experience, great bagel

A
Aaron Phillips

Quite good, but their 'toasted' isnt quite as toasted as usual. Scallion cream cheese is elite, everything seasoning elite, BEC thankfully not dry and rubbery. Will be back maybe but the toasting....maybe not

O
Old School Johnny

I only got a bagel and cream cheese. So I can't comment on the menu at large. However service was good, quick and polite. I had a everything pumpernickel bagel toasted with the walnut raisin cream cheese. And a coffee. Both were great. Bagels was definitely fresh. This place also has seating which is nice especially in cold and snowy weather.

Busy in the am, but the line goes fast. Great menu options, I ordered a bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. It had great flavor! It was very filling. Nice, clean and plenty of seating.

R
Realist Fakes

A $9 bacon egg & cheese has to be special to get a good rating. This one was inferior to the $6 equivalent at healthy & hungry a couple blocks down. Good bagel variety & surprisingly good coffee salvaged this rating

C
Camilo Gómez Moreno

Great bagel; but the guy who prepares them has a horrible mood.

P
Paul Pettersen

Will definitely give them another try. Just not a fan of this visit, presented with a stale poppy seed bagel at 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon. It had to be more than a day old, likely why the counterperson asked 2x if I wanted it toasted. No biggie. Will come early in AM next time.

J
JB Nagy

Had a garlic bialy sandwich with whitefish salad. Bialy was excellent. Whitefish salad had way too much mayonnaise. Could barely taste the whitefish. It was expensive, which would be fine if the whitefish had been better. May try it with another filling before giving up and just buying the bialys and making my own sandwiches.

L
Lucy K

I love Kossar’s bagels, but I wish I could say the same thing about their prices. I stopped in last week to get a bagel with tunafish and was charged $13 and change. That’s $1.90 for the bagel and over $11 for a leveled ice cream scoop of tuna fish. Thinking that the cashier may have charged me for a tuna melt by accident, I stopped in later in the afternoon to check on the price of a scoop of tuna fish and another cashier acknowledged I should’ve been charged only $11 and change instead of $13. So about $9 for the tuna. And by the way, their tuna salad is nothing special—simply mayonnaise and celery. This is all that I want however, it does not merit such a high price. Getting a scoop of tunafish on a bagel should not be cost me the same thing as buying one of their more elaborate sandwiches with multiple items on them. Either their prices for simple items are out of control or they need to better train their cashiers so they have a better handle on what they should be charging for one add-on to a bagel. Definitely not worth it—next time I will buy a bagel and add my own tuna.

H
Harvey Messing

As a bakery, Kossar's has a different appearance because of all the photographs nicely displayed on the wall. There were a lot of people eating at tables. I went there to try one of their pastries, and chose their banana cupcake ($4.50 including tax) which I was greatly disappointed in. The large cupcake had banana pieces on the top along with nuts. The top of the cupcake had nice flavor, but after I bit off all of the top of the cupcake, I found that the rest of it had no flavor. In other words, the top 5% of the cupcake had flavor, the remainder did not. The bakery is on York Avenue, near East 76th Street. My two star rating for the food is based on this cupcake only.

P
Philipp Tereshenko

Bagels here are ok - they’ll get the job done but they’re the equivalent of a street cart or bodega. Bacon was good though. Service is brutal

A
Alexa Kafka

The bagel was really tasty, but the staff was slightly rude. It’s a really busy spot and they are pumping out fresh stuff constantly.

VB
VB

Not the best bagels, maybe they taste better in the morning. By the evening, they tasted dry and a bit stale. We had the whole everything bagel with chipotle cream cheese, the cream cheese was excellent though! Also ordered the everything bagel with egg and cheese. The vibe is classic old school. The restroom was super clean!

A
Akanksha Handoo

Tried their egg cheese avo breakfast wrap and No seasoning whatsoever. The mushrooms also tasted uncooked. May be I'll try their sandwiches next time.

R
Raechel Wood

Overhyped. Really wanted to like this place. First time I asked for a toasted corn muffin. Dude had no idea what I was asking for. Finally he understands and I get a lukewarm muffin. Went again and asked for Lox on an egg everything bagel (I saw it on their menu) and scallion cream cheese. Again the worker has no idea what I am asking for. Read the order again. I received a Leo omelette with cream cheese. Workers seriously do not understand what people order. Need better training. Also need to put up online ordering so we can get our orders right.

Maybe their other stuff is better, but the bagels are underwhelming. Unfortunately these are more "roll with a hole," not legit bagels, and they're very ungenerous with the cream cheese. Disappointing, particularly as this part of the UWS is really lacking in good bagel places.

The new Kossar’s owner has modified the recipe and switched to electric convection ovens. The Bialy are just terrible. Somehow tough and rubbery just a hour out of the ovens. Just completely distinct from the original Kossar’s recipe. Grocery store bialy would beat these in a blind taste test any day. How tragic. Don’t be deceived by the heritage of the name. These are junk with a nice label.

Major rip off. I made the mistake of trying to support this business by using their “preferred app” for online ordering. There was $6 worth of hidden fees, resulting in a 35% markup. There was no way to cancel the order. The feed didn’t show until after you hit pay. Total scam.

Hit or miss. There are days you really enjoy both food and service and others you wish you hadn't stepped in. They change staff regularly and i guess they dont look to hire quality. The older man with vision glasses who takes orders is rude and doesn't seem to know what he is doing.

The worst sausage egg and cheese bagel I have ever had. Dry flavorless

Kossar’s bialys are always terrific EXCEPT when purchased via Goldbelly. The bialys ordered on Goldbelly were no where near the quality or taste when purchased at a retail store. Equally disappointing is that I purchased them from Goldbelly using a gift certificate for my 75th birthday. Customer service is non existent as I emailed Kossar’s 3 times to bring this to their attention.

Asked for tuna fish salad spread but don't know if it was some other type of fish spread or if it was just bad. Ruined my lunch, too far away to return, will think twice before ever going there again.

I asked for a plain bagel ($1.90) and asked that they add avocado ($3). They ended up charging me $8. When I asked about it, the cashier just said it’s “an expensive store” and told me to “deal with it.” Price charged doesn’t reflect what’s on their menu boards. Bagel & Co is way better and has honest pricing (with friendly cashiers).

I saw a TikTok video and I happened to be flying into NY for a day. I placed my delivery order through their website and it gave me a confirmation along with a live tracking method. It said it would be delivered by 8:22am. When I tracked it at 8:08am, it still said 8:22am. Well, 8:22 came and went. I called the store and was told my order didn't exist. The tracking was updated to 8:27am as I was on the phone with them. The only thing they were interested in was placing blame elsewhere not a thought about getting me my order as soon as possible. I was told the order doesn't really mean anything because they couldn't find the order. I kept asking how I could get my breakfast asap and they kept trying to shift the blame. I was told that the manager wasn't there but that he'd call me in 15-20 minutes and then affter he speaks to me, he'd call the "company" to find out what happened. Still no interest in my breakfast getting to me. It's been 45 minutes and what do you know, he still hasn't called me. The food might be fantastic but I have no idea. All I know is that customer satisfaction means absolutely nothing to these people. What a mockery of a business... Shameful.

Every time I order delivery they screw up my order. I asked for capers (and paid extra for it) and they didn't add it. The time before that they gave me the wrong type of bagel. I don't think the people who work here can read.

I am absolutely appalled by my latest experience at Kossar’s Bagels & Bialys. I have always enjoyed coming here, but after today, I am beyond disappointed. I walked in, as I often do, to order my usual half-dozen bagels. I clearly stated that I wanted three everything bagels and three raisin bagels. However, as the employee started bagging my order, I noticed he was grabbing sesame bagels instead. When I asked him to confirm what he was packing, he told me, "Three everything, three sesame, and a raisin." That was NOT what I ordered. I had to repeat myself to ensure he got it right. I paid and left, only to discover that one of my bagels was burnt—which is simply unacceptable. And to make matters worse, I was not given the free bagel per the store promotion with the order of half a dozen bagels. This is not the level of service I expect from a place I’ve trusted. I don’t know what has changed, but this was incredibly disappointing. I truly hope management takes this feedback seriously because this is not how you treat loyal customers.
