Opinions de Sushi Yasaka New York
We ate our dinner so fast I couldn’t take pictures but the food was so good! Delicious sushi, great price, speedy service. I’m so glad we finally ate here. I can’t wait to return
Unassuming sushi spot on the Upper West Side with a fantastic lunch special (offered on weekends too). For $18 you get three rolls and a side salad - rolls are freshly made with a healthy serving of fresh fish stuffed inside They're really busy so be prepared to wait for a table if you don’t have a reservation!
Always love coming to Sushi Yasaka. They're really busy so definitely make sure to have a reservation (usually it's not too hard to book in advance for lunch, which are the best times to come anyway). I really appreciate that they also offer their lunch special options on weekends, too, so corporate slaves like me can still try their cheap and delicious lunch sets :) I usually order the miyabi lunch with a side of salad. The fish is always so amazingly fresh and high-quality, and it's a perfect portion size and mix of pieces of sushi, sashimi, and rolls. The salad is a nice starter but not particularly unique as such. It's always a difficult choice between the miyabi lunch and the chirashi lunch, which I think looks similarly yummy, too. Will definitely want to come back and try more of their delicious lunch specials :)
The sushi here was amazing!! I got the spicy tuna roll, the spicy salmon roll, and the spicy shrimp tempura roll which all came in a set entree and wow. The spicy salmon roll blew my socks off, and the other two were very good as well. I also order their seaweed salad, and that was easily in my top three favorite that I’ve have (and I eat seaweed salad a lot)! My mom and I had the most wonderful time, and the next time I’m in New York I’ll certainly be back!!
The fish quality at Yasaka is consistently excellent. You can always count on them for fresh sushi. The restaurant is always lively, and their lunch specials are a great deal. The preorder/order pickup website is also easy to use! Cash is required for in person orders under $10.
Yasaka is my favorite sushi restaurant, when my friend took me to Yasaka many years ago I was so impressed about quality of fish. Still today they have not changed. I love to come here after I tried so many new sushi restaurant and I often disappointed with their quality of fish but not Yasaka!
We visited for dinner a few nights ago and made reservations about 24 hours in advance for our group of three. We arrived 15 minutes early and were seated right away, which was a nice surprise. The staff were attentive throughout the evening, frequently checking on drinks and orders without being overbearing. We started with a few appetizers to share. Portions were on the smaller side given the price, but each dish was flavorful and beautifully prepared. For my entrée, I ordered the chirashi (though listed under a different name on the menu). The fish was incredibly fresh, with a generous variety that made the dish both satisfying and memorable. The only downside was the noise level. At first, we were seated next to a family with young children who were lively but left quickly. However, the group that came in after them was very loud, which made conversation difficult. While the food and service were excellent, the ambience may not be ideal if you’re looking for a quiet, relaxed dining experience. Overall, this restaurant shines in terms of flavor and customer service—worth a visit if food is your priority.
Simple and small set up inside, but serving great quality sushi. Each piece had a nice thick slice of fish and good rice to fish ratio. We started with a couple of apps to share, including the karage chicken which came with six big pieces and was piping hot but delicious! We also got a tuna tartare with crunchy seaweed chips. Both were great. I got the deluxe which came with 9 pieces and a roll. My friends got the Miyabi with 6 pieces of sushi, 10 pieces sashimi and a roll. By the end we were all full. They offer dessert- ice cream, mochi, and a chocolate pudding but were out of some when we were there. Service was attentive but they forgot to refill our water after our meal arrived. Overall, great option when you want sushi in the upper west!
Very surprised to find this gem in UWS of Manhattan. We had a reservation for 12 pm on a Sunday and it's already packed 😲. Excellent food. Had choice of lunch specials on weekends ! The soft shell crab roll showcased beefy juicy crab in perfectly thin deep fried batter. Family friendly as we noticed a little hand reaching out in between the partition to say hi ... Not swiping our sashimi 🤣. So cute 🥰. Will revisit and will reserve a spot before hand to be sure. Service team is wonderful. Excellent find 👍🤩
Went here on a whim last night after hearing many positive reviews for it. We went at 9. The place was packed, and we were told we would have to wait til 9:25, but we actually got seated earlier. The waiters were attentive and there were plenty of staff to attend to us and everyone else. Staff seemed happy and communicated with each other and us very well, were polite and helpful. The food was delicious! Especially for the price. I've gotten sushi at many other locations in NYC, and was really surprised by how fresh the fish was and how well composed each dish was. It really felt like the food was cared for at a much higher level than what I'd typically expect for this price point. I got the akadashi miso soup, the fresh salmon maki, the yellowtail jalapeño, and a salmon skin roll. The salmon was fresh and light. Like higher end restaurant quality fresh!!! The yellowtail was also super fresh and the jalapeño was spicy. The salmon skin was good as well, and came with cucumber inside. But the star of the night was something unexpected that my partner (vegetarian) had ordered - Sautéed mushrooms. I am a BIG mushroom fan, and I have NEVER had mushrooms this tasty and flavorful - and beautifully paired with lemon of all things! Really recommend squeezing that lemon over top for the extra tang. Organic mushrooms are so much better than regular mushrooms, and the butter was just FANTASTIC. I couldn't stop eating the mushrooms and look forward to ordering them again. My partner also ordered the corn tempura with yuzu salt which had unique textures and a nice sweetness and saltiness to it. Very satisfying! He also got a bowl of sushi rice which we ate with some of the mushroom, although the mushroom was lovely on its own. I took pics of the ginger and wasabi offerings - the ginger had a unique earthy flavor and the wasabi had little crunchy bits in it, which I've encountered before. In any case, not the generic kind of condiment, which I think spoke to the level of detail and attention this restaurant pays to every element of the meal! This was truly a refreshing sushi experience and I highly recommend. The only thing I wish was better was the lighting design of the interior. Instead of nice warm tungsten lights for an evening ambience, the establishment uses blindingly bright daylight calibrated spot lights that beam down from above - the kind of lights used in jewelry stores to make the gemstones sparkle. It makes the food look good - as you can see in my pictures (which were NOT taking with flash, only the lighting that was there), everything was brightly lit and visible even thought it was 9:30 at night... but this cold, fluorescent-type lighting was a bit uncomfortable to sit under - I couldn't look up without getting flashed in the eye by the bright spotlight above - and the lighting made the atmosphere feel a bit low-end and less intimate, more like a cafeteria than a restaurant. I will likely be going back during the day (when hopefully the light won't be an issue) to enjoy the food again!
A very cool authentic Japanese restaurant on uws. We picked it for birthday dinner and were not disappointed. I recommend booking a table in advance. We ordered tuna tartare, deluxe sushi set, and snow crab roll—all delicious with fresh fish and perfect flavor combinations. The menu is extensive with a wide variety of dishes to choose from. For dessert, we had a tea-flavoured authentic Japanese cake with vanilla ice cream. The service was quick and friendly. Overall, the place is excellent, great food quality-price ratio and we'll definitely return to try more dishes next time!
Spectacular and affordable sushi with large vegetarian selection. Tofu teriyaki was delectable and the seaweed and mushroom starters in the perfect sauce made for a filling meal. The vegetarian sushi selection was incredible and bit sized to allow for tasting. Service was friendly and fast, great vibe!

Great value sushi. My favorite dish was the aged dashi tofu. Chirashi bowl and soba noodles were also tasty. No frill place, cozy and warm. Speedy service. I would definitely come back.

Fish is usually very high quality and there is a good variety in the chef's dishes (like the sashimi entree). Prices are reasonable for the quality and Yasaka is in a great location, far west on the UWS. Their special appetizers are not to be ignored - there's always something interesting and very delicious. Atmosphere is very "basement", I will say no more. Service used to be better, now it's inconsistent. We go for the food and because it's two blocks from our apartment.
Loved the food, its one of the best sushi places in upper west side, and with reasonable prices. If it's the first time, then you should order the yellowtail sushi, its butteryness it's delicious, it has an umami flavor which doesn't need soy sauce. And its lotus root has the perfect balance between sweet and sour.
If you're pre-Lincoln Center-ing and can't stand the mediocre vibes at The Smith, walk 8 min north to Sushi Yasaka for affordable pan-Japanese fare. Yasaka isn't looking to win any Michelin-Beard awards, so don't come in with your highfalutin omakase nonsense. It's a neighborhood spot, serving the kind of down-home food your obaasan from another mother would feed you after a long day of middle schooling. We got the Special Spicy Salmon Roll, which was a tasty omega-3 smorgasbord of fishy goodness. To accompany it, we also got the Salmon Roll and Spicy Salmon Roll because what we lack in diversity, we make up for with being basic. Haha. Apparently, fish, rice and nori wasn't enough because we decided to also tack on some soup udon. The Kansai Udon was my pick, and it was perfect for a chilly night when all you want is to be encased in liquid carbs. All that for the low, low price of ~$30pp (tax and tip included), and this place practically pays YOU to eat here.

Very reliable sushi on the yes no frills but good menu and good prices. Nice ambiance but nothing too fancy. Service is good and it's usually busy.
Watch out: Regular Omakasa is $80. It's not in the menu. One would assume that of mini coast $30, the regular will be $40, $50 tops. But they take advantage of price not being announced to charge …

I was extremely disappointed by my recent visit. I ordered the lunch special and added a squid–uni roll. The uni was overwhelmingly fishy…… I’ve had uni many times and this was by far the worst. I politely asked to switch to another item of equal value the staff agreed. After ~20 minutes waiting, I noticed the chef point me out with a dismissive gesture (he lifted his chin and pointed me out to the servers with a quick jerk of his mouth). When the replacement roll arrived, the waitress told me they “normally don’t accept exchanges” and that “uni just tastes like that.” She then claimed the chef had only been asking where to send the dish, a statement that contradicted what I’d just witnessed and felt like a deliberate cover-up. I think a restaurant that presents itself as high-end should care about customer satisfaction, not belittle guests or hide behind excuses. I won’t be angry if they have either good uni or good attitude I guess. Lunch special and my first waiter were great btw! Really like tuna here
