Opinions de La Bonne Soupe New York
From the moment you enter Michael’s in midtown, you feel something different. You realize why certain places are deserving of the title “institution”. This decades-long power dining restaurant is a class above the rest. From the cozy decor to the amazing art collection, to the attentive and courteous staff led by dining legend Steve at the helm as manager to the decadent expertly prepared cuisine, this place is deserving of every single accolade. We started with a few craft martinis (my friend’s up, mine extra dirty) and went into the Korean chicken bites, caesar salad, burrata special and tartare for apps and I ordered the chefs lamb for my main with a side of delicious broccolini. The team brought out a full spread of desserts which was far too much but if anything it showed that they are willing to go above and beyond for their clientele. Will definitely be back next time I’m in the area. Thanks team!
We werent sure where to eat before our show and noticed Michaels and decided to go in and was a great decision. The restaurant itself is beautiful with retro red art on all the walls, service was amazing we sat at the bar . We were not able to dine in but enjoyed their happy hour options the Korean Fried chicken was delicious and Duck Bao Buns. Will definetly return!
Some colleagues took me here and told me about its California origins and Michael’s history himself and then he actually stopped by the table. It was lunch and I had a magnificent Cobb salad. Staff and environs wonderful.
I had the perfect dinner here for Valentine’s Day! Great food, atmosphere and staff all around. Appetizers to dessert was all delicious. I am not even a fan of Kale but even their Kale Caesar Salad was so tasty; I finished it. I definitely recommend this place.
Big fan of Michael's. Worked in the area for several years and had great business lunches a few times a year. Because I lived in a different part of the city, I never thought to try it for dinner. Recently, I was looking for a classic NYC fine dining restaurant in midtown good for families with kids for a family birthday celebration. A friend suggested we try Michael's and they delivered! The lovely hostess made it magical for our kids upon entry, we were treated with the table in the window, the food was fresh and tasty and the kids loved it! There is not a kids menu but they will do kids pasta, simple burger, steak, chicken, etc. One of our kids - the pickiest eater - ordered a butter pasta and said it was the best they ever had. We all tried it and agreed, had to order another! There is a pretty limited wine selection but all were very good. Beer selection could be improved. The classic room has been the setting for many business deals and I have fond memories of a few, enhanced by our recent family experience. Love the laid-back but first-class vibe and unpretentious service. Highly recommend!
Michael's is the perfect fine dining experience. I came here for my mother's 40th birthday and I really want to thank the staff for making it memorable. A complimentary birthday cake was given to us and the staff sang her happy birthday. The setting is luxurious and the wait staff have everything down to absolute perfection. The margarita pie was warm and cheesy and the fish was well seasoned and presented. I want to thank the manager Basdeo for making our night so special.
The food was good and the staff was superb. The dining room is also beautiful. We went for a weekday lunch and it was very much a business crowd. The vibe is borderline stuffy, but the staff was so kind that their warmth offset that.
I went in there for lunch. Great burger, it was a ground up ribeye steak. One of the better burgers I’ve ever had. I was in there early so it wasn’t very busy. I would certainly revisit this place when I am back in Manhattan
Very nice stylish restaurant with great art work. Loved the atmosphere
Classic NY power breakfast! Went on Juneteenth holiday, so it was easy to get into and to enjoy. First class food and service at business class prices.
Incredibly consistent expense account breakfast spot. Literally the only choice in midtown for a high end power breakfast
Michael’s still has its charm. From the moment you settle into a comfortable chair, you’re transported into a different world—one defined by relaxation and understated culinary mastery. The food is consistently fresh and perfectly seasoned, and the winter specials are an absolute must-try. The wine selection is equally impressive, with an award-winning list that always delivers. On our visit, we enjoyed a memorable 2007 Chambolle-Musigny. Service is excellent—attentive, knowledgeable, and present when needed without ever feeling intrusive. A place I truly love and one I’m always happy to return to.
I had an outstanding 5-star experience at Michael's. The food was flawless, earning a perfect 5-star rating. The service and atmosphere were also very strong, earning 4 stars each, which created a professional and inviting environment for an exceptional overall meal.
Came in first time for our 20th anniversary… Couldn’t have been more impressed! Absolutely fantastic experience! Food was excellent, and staff was attentive and very engaged! Loved it! Will definitely be back!
Came here for a dinner with colleagues. It's almost Halloween so the decor was themed artistically and was nice. We ordered a bunch of appetizers to share and they were all solid. I got salmon for my entree and it was really juicy and nice.
Absolutely love this place—our new favorite spot! Every bite is delicious, with each dish offering its own unique twist. The service is excellent from start to finish, and we appreciate the round tables that make group dining feel cozy and connected. Even though it is crowded, the noise level is perfect for conversation. Can’t wait to go back
A great night out all together. Starting with a warm welcome at the door, the night continued to get better and better with lovely food and wine served by friendly staff in a beautiful setting.
Stumbled upon this place while on a work trip. AHHHHMAZING!!!!!! I had the fish special "skate with ramps". The sauce was maybe a buerre blanc, not sure but wow! For dessert I had Eton's Mess. A delightful mix of berry compote with vanilla ice cream, fresh cream and crumbled meringue. Service was top notch from the hostess to our waiter. Atmosphere was lovely and dimly lit with candles. I'll definitely be back. 10 out of 10!
Thank you for the lovely experience. We have visited the restaurant four times now and have completely fallen in love with it. We particularly loved the onion soup—it is probably the best in the world—as well as the steak frites. Everything was perfect, from the amazing service of the staff to the cozy atmosphere. Thank you again for the wonderful experience.
This place was my go-to bistro back in the old days, especially with crepes and fondue. They used to have a daily dinner special. I believe it has changed owner, but the food quality is still very good. The onion soup and escargot were still amazing. I had the steak sandwich in my latest visit, those cheese with sweet onion on the meat is just delicious.
Stumbled upon it the other night, searching for a low key, cozy spot in Midtown. Excellent experience from the hostess to walking out the door. Quality service and food. No frills. Reasonable prices for that area. Highly recommended if you're looking for a good, honest, memorable meal. Merci, Bonne Soupe!
Kinda small, reservations recommended, although I was able to be seated pretty quickly about 12:30p on a Thursday. Had to get the French Onion soup, of course. Very good, thick layer of cheese and packed with savory beef. Coffee was tremendously good. Update 12/5/25: had to return to this favorite on a cold day. Immediately seated at the bar (only 3 stools). Great service, great suit, and great coffee.
Nice place for really good dinner and warm conversation. Ordered Butternut Squash & Bacon soup (was perfectly balanced), soups de jour (tomato taste) and gnocchi. Portions are good, food came on time and hot. Bread was tasty and served with soup. The cranberry juice was also good.
This BEST French onion soup in the city. Every time I go it's an utter delight. It's a very cozy vibe inside and I love to go with friends for a nice relaxing and simple french dinner with amazing flavors. My go to is their dinner prefix menu which is soup or salad, entree, then dessert. I always get the same thing: starting with the French onion soup. The flavors are INSANE. Perfectly crispy cooked cheese on top, the right about of croutons for the consistency, and the beef and sherry flavor just blows my mind every time. When I say they make the best French onion soup, I dare you to try this and tell me one better. It blows them all out of the water! The steak frites is always my entree and the sauce is just so thick, creamy, and an absolutely flavor explosion (bet you haven't heard that one in a while lol) it truly is! Then the dessert... not only is it decadent and delicious but it's always camera ready...by that I mean you're absolutely gonna wanna film yourself pouring the indulgent chocolate on top of it. It gets the people going! This is one of my absolute favorite places to go for a meal in the city, and I hope they continue to be amazing. Well done, La Bonne. Well done.
This restaurant has been a staple in my family since I’ve been a child, and I am so glad that it has remained faithful to the French culture and food that I’ve grown up with. The food is absolutely delicious, menu filled with a multitude of options for every guest. I always recommend their soupe à l’oignon & mousse au chocolat. I went with my friend; we had their moules frites and bœuf bourguignon & it was amazing. Highly recommend dropping here if you’re missing a taste of France or even if you’re looking for a great place to dine.
This was a cool French restaurant. I was an American and ordered a burger and fries lol. It was really good. It had a lot of caramelized onions. Wasn’t a huge fan, but I also didn’t request them not to include them. We also got fresh bread while we waited for our food. My friends ordered some of the French dishes and they really enjoyed them. They said the mushroom soup was really good. I would definitely go back.
The menu is relatively small, but everything is very good. I've been eating here for years whenever I visit NYC.

The absolute best French onion soup I have ever hade and the dressing on the side salad is perfection.

Food is ok, not spectacular as I had expected from previous reviews. The tomato was very good, but the rest was not very tasty. Service was great, the waiter’s was very attentive. The chair was badly worn and is in need of some tlc. It was not very busy when I was there.
It seems like making a reservation is the best idea. We visited for lunch, and it packed up quite quickly. The food was okay. The service was good.
Laid back spot. Escargot is official, crème brûlée was too dark on top for my liking. Food is authentic. Great date night spot. Not suited for groups imo. I was served late but I’ll put this more on my server than the restaurant. For what it is it’s great. It’s not souped up for American liking. It’s real French meh food but it’s not a bad thing it’s just a French thing.
I showed up with a reservation that was accidentally for the wrong day, which I didn’t realize until checkin. They were able to accommodate us, on a Saturday, but at 4pm and only for 2. It’s a small place, so I recommend making a reservation (and making sure it’s correct!). The French onion soup was delicious. I ordered a side of bread, which was useful for getting the cheese. Prices were very reasonable. I agree with the inattentive service. I had to request a water after none was served beyond the first glass at seating. When we requested the bill, they gave me the check when it should have gone to the other person, no big. But when she came with the card reader, my dining companion had the cc in her hand but the server pushed the reader into my face and zoned out—I had to call her attention twice to get her to pay attention and give the reader to the other person. Then, when she brought the receipt, she gave it to me. When the lights went down for dinner service, it became very, very dark, which is typically for nyc restaurants but it was a stark contrast from the lights, so best to go during the daytime if you have vision impairments. Noise level was low until dinner service started and then it got very loud; it’s a small place. All said, I will go back.
An old midtown classic that consistently delivers a solid meal. One of the few places I know where you can get a nice fondue meal. The fondue is what draws me there not sure I would necessarily go out of my way to go there otherwise since it’s not convenient, but it’s a solid spot in Midtown, especially for children and out of town guests and it’s cozy in the winter.

Amazing French onion soup!! Packed restaurant, so definitely make a reservation before a show. The kitchen was slow at this time so be prepared to wait a bit for your food. Close to Carnegie Hall.

Cute little spot. Unfortunately we were greeted rudely by the waitress. She was blonde with a ponytail and bad accent. Think she was bothered when she saw us come in with 3 kids. Could have been a better experience but after her attitude we didn’t stay for long and only ordered a dessert and wine. If you are going to work in customer service have a better attitude and smile.

We arrived early for our reservation—at 3:30 PM for a 4:00 PM seating—as we were a large party of nine and wanted to make sure everything was in order. The restaurant sat us promptly, which we appreciated, but unfortunately that is where the positive experience ended. No one informed us that dinner service would not begin until 4:00 PM. Had they communicated this, we would have adjusted expectations. Instead, we sat without a single acknowledgment from a server. By 4:15 PM—45 minutes after being seated—we still had not so much as been greeted. I eventually had to get up and look for a manager or server myself. We were heading to Radio City for the Christmas show with three children, and we were ready to order starters and drinks. Had a server approached us in a timely manner, we likely would have ordered significantly more. When we finally did place our order, one of the children’s meals was incorrect. This resulted in the child having to wait 10 minutes longer than the rest of the party to eat, when we had ordered this meal first and asked for it to come out with the starters. What made the situation even more frustrating was watching the table behind us—seated after us and consisting of three adults with no children—receive attentive, timely service. For a $600 bill with an automatic 20% gratuity, the service simply did not come close to meeting expectations. I often send clients and partners to La Bonne Soupe during the week, and I am genuinely shocked by how poor the service was during this visit.
