Opinions de Madras Dosa Co. New York
Oh dear God. Both sandwich and chai tastes like my mom’s. No higher compliment can be given. If you’re not a brown person, be warned the “egg salad” sandwich is not your regular egg salad. This is likely true for much of their menu. If you’re willing to take the risk, however, you will be swiftly rewarded. Highly, profusely, irrevocably recommended. I ordered takeout during a workday so can’t comment on ‘atmosphere’, but the blasting of Bollywood hits was appreciated.
When I walked by this place the other day I freaked and counted down the days to when I could come try. That day is today and this place was fireeeee. I got the Traditional Dosa and added Lamb to it. The flavors were out of this worlddd. There was a great amount of filling too like Id be ripping the dosa and there was so much it would fall out so at the end I had an extra snack lol. The chutneys were great too. The coconut chutney was refreshing, the sambar was delish even on its own just eating it like a stew, and the ginger chutney was out of this world good!!! I wanted more of it. I also tried the Limca drink which was an Indian version of sprite. I actually thought it had more of a lime flavor and a hint of creaminess to it? Idk how to best explain it but it was great. They have a ton of other non-dosa menu items that I will definitely be back to try!
I’m not sure if I’ve reviewed this place before. If not, I’m shocked that I haven’t. This is easily the best dosa I’ve had in the city. It takes a lot of restraint not to come here all the time. I usually order the traditional dosa and add cheese and onions. Absolutely delicious. I’ve also had the mango lassi, which is excellent, and more recently the chai, which is the most authentic I’ve tasted in the city. None of that Starbucks-style cinnamon-sugar syrup nonsense. Just real, authentic flavor. It reminds me of how my grandmother makes it. Their paan is also fantastic. I don’t even like paan that much, but theirs is a must-have. Honestly, it makes me a little sad that this place doesn’t have a solid 5/5 rating, because they deserve it. I’d give them a 10/5 if I could. I originally ordered my food for pickup but ended up eating there instead. While I was eating, a staff member came over to ask if I wanted my chai warmed up in case it got cold. Top-notch service. They’ve clearly thought of everything, including custom packaging designed to transport dosa and the various dipping sauces. The facility is completely clean and well organized, with a great cultural ambiance. I sat there enjoying delicious food while listening to Bollywood music from my childhood. I cannot recommend this place enough.
Wish I could give more than 5 stars. Food is outstanding. Other than South Indian dishes, Pao Bhaji will bring us back here. Staff is excellent, specially Sabastin chef has god gifted touch to make dishes wonderful. Varun with his warmth also added flavour to our experience.
While I love Indian food, I’ve never had dosa before! Absolutely delicious and a very generous portions. Also the Samosa Chaat is outstanding and you must try (think of it like a deconstructed, delicious dip). We’ll definitely be coming back!
An absolutely outstanding place with incredible food and truly exceptional service. Everything we tried was full of authentic flavors, but the masala dosa was on another level, perfectly crisp, richly spiced, and simply unforgettable. As Tamil Norwegians, we don’t say this lightly: this is the real deal. The quality, hospitality, and attention to detail made the experience even more special. A place that genuinely deserves the highest praise. Highly recommended, we will definitely be back!
Got out of my workout and was on my way to Trader Joe’s when I spotted this place. I’m a big dosa fan and have been searching for a good and authentic spot for a while, so I was excited to give it a try. I ordered the Pav Bhaji Dosa and it was absolutely delicious! I devoured it so fast, my brain didn't register I had a full meal. Fast service, clean space, and great flavor — I highly recommend it!
This place is so good. Incredible flavors, great food. So well flavored and tasty. Dosa's a crispy and not oily or heavy at all. Fillings are pretty good. Sauces are varied and have good depth in flavor. Friendly and fast service as well. They also have Indian music videos on the background which are fun to watch.
It’s good. I enjoyed it. I will come back and try other things. (That’s high praise for dosa.) I didn’t order the masala dosa because I was scared. What if their potatoes are just average? I’ve been burned so many times by mediocre masala aloo that I just couldn’t be that vulnerable on a first visit. At least at first you have to give people a chance to not hurt you. Some readers might say this is a trauma response. I say coconut chutney has healed my ancestors for generations. Instead I got paneer with karampodi. Weird combo but whatever at a place where you can put nutella on your dosa anything goes. Yes I will admit that I goggled at the menu for a while because who makes their own dosa but I guess this is America. the podi was not as spicy as the man had warned me, but it never is. It was pungent and flavorful. The dosa was crispy and nice, a little browner than necessary but that made it crisp. I regretted not adding ghee because I always regret when there is no ghee in my mouth. they have a lot of things on the menu that are really not common. (If a place makes dahi puri it has to be doing something right.) I opted for masala lassi (quite nice) but they even have coconuts as a drink option. I dare to return and explore your secrets. And maybe even try the aloo. Maybe.
I recently visited Madras Dosa & Co on 6th Avenue and tried a few dishes. I ordered Masala Dosa, Samosa Chaat, and Pani Puri. The Masala Dosa was delicious with a crisp texture and well-spiced filling, while the Samosa Chaat had a nice mix of flavors and freshness. However, I was disappointed with the Pani Puri, as the taste did not meet expectations and lacked the authentic flavor I was hoping for. Overall, the restaurant has some good options, but the Pani Puri definitely needs improvement.
I ordered a traditional potato dosa. It came out very quickly and had more filling than other dosa locations I've been to. There are Indian music videos playing on a big screen TV which I appreciate. So often restaurants just play typical pop music and this was very nice. I also love the peacock mural. The food was delicious. One of the sauces that comes with the dosa is incredibly sweet and spicy. It far surpasses "white people" spicy and I loved it. They also have Lay's chips from India which I need to buy next time. Masala chips? Yes!! My only complaint is there's no AC. There are fans. Spicy food plus no AC can be a bit uncomfortable. The staff was attentive and checked it I needed anything twice. I look forward to trying other foods from the menu. Especially the vada!!
I tried their Chelsea location 🍽️ dosa with potatoes and spicy podi 🍽️ plain dosa 🍽️ vada 🍽️ vada pao All the batters were fresh. The dosa was crispy and the fillings were delicous. The dosa comes with tamarind, coconut chutney and sambhar. They also have all the Indian sodas and chips. Great new restaurant and they’re also expanding! Staff was friendly too!
Admittedly this is my first time having a Dosa so I don't have previous experiences to compare. My first Dosa tasted delicious. I loved the crunch that comes with it and the filling options you can get. The crumbled Samosa is what made it for me. This went during the soft opening so I'm curious to try other dishes they have.
What a great find! I love dosas and happened to come across Madras Dosa during their soft opening. They have traditional offerings like the masala potato dosa and a veg dosa, but also have meat variations like minced chicken and cheese, cheesesteak, lamb and a totally vegan option. It didn’t take long to get my dosa, and it came with a tamarind chutney, a coconut chutney and sambar. I also got the mango lassi, which was on point. I didn’t designate a spice level, and it wasn’t spicy at all, which was fine with me. I think you would have to ask for spicy, if you want it. The sambar was the only item that packed some heat. I enjoyed my minced chicken dosa, although it did feel a bit over salty after many bites. The dosa skin is pretty sturdy, with a crunchy bite on the outside and softer texture inside. I enjoyed it This will become a staple whenever I’m in the neighborhood for my Trader Joe’s run. Next time I’ll try the idly, vada and chaats. (And as a heads up, there’s no bathroom here.)
First time here! I went to the one in Rockefeller center and loved it. First off I am stating that i am not an expert on indian food. Just stating what my taste buds told me. The dosa crepe here was extra thin. Rock center was thicker. I prefer rock center. This one crumbled to crumbs in my hand and it was hard to eat. I picked it up like a burrito and it fell apart. The liquid to pour into the Pani puri was ICE COLD. I am surprised there was not an ice cube floating in it. I poured it into the puff ball and all I tasted was ice water. The cold temperature ruins any flavor. I will go to rock center.
Stopped here on a whim for lunch while I was in the area and was pleasantly surprised! I got the lamb canteen sandwich and it was delicious. The portion was larger than I expected so I ended up taking some home. The decor is beautiful and the space is bright, clean and cheerful. It’s counter service, so pretty casual.
Food was great, but service was mid. Our order took a while to get to us because it was given to another customer (who ate our order in front of us without verifying) and the first person who notified us of it didn’t apologize. Although when we ended up getting the food it was delicious!!! (Apart from the fact they gave us one drop of chutney)
The food was good. HOWEVER, I don’t eat cilantro and there wasn’t a protein option that didn’t have cilantro in it. This would be a 1 star review if they weren’t so nice. The spicy veggie dosa was great, but I wanted chicken. That said, I finished my food. My friend who loves cilantro said her food was phenomenal. RECOMMENDED IF YOU LIKE CILANTRO.
