Great food. Great service. Less msg in my opinion. Don't get the soup dumplings if you are looking for a thin wrap. The wrap is thicker than I would prefer.
Excellent dim sum. Clean restaurant. Pleasant service. Everything we ordered was tasty and presented wonderfully.
Great dim sum. Little bit pricy. The durian cake is awesome.
They have Dim Sum in the evening. What more do I need to say? Great selection and also a full menu.
Location is cute and quaint, the servers are so kind and accomodating! The food...DELICIOUS!
Dim sum done right! Great lunch time deal with super quality food! I would go again in a heartbeat. Crazy cool decor make this spot A+ in my book and best part is....you don't regret eating there.
I grew up in canton. Despite the westernized decor, the dim sum here are pretty legit, in fact taste so much better than the ones in Chinatown. Don't let the look fool you.
Best dim sum restaurant in NYC! You definitely get your money's worth coming here excellent serves, food arrives quick, excellent martinis!!! Best experience! My new favorite place
My favorite chinese place in NYC! Loved the veggie dim sums and spring rolls. Great service, very clean and unlike the crappy china town places.
Great Food. Great Prices. Order the lunch special and get a soup combo. Everytime I get a different item from the menu and is always surprising flavor.
It's interesting that there's a wide range of reviews ranging from really bad to great. My experience the three times I've been there has been great. I've only come in for dim sum and I found the quality to be excellent. Also, I only order the steamed dim sum and not the fried. The only one that I found to be mediocre was the soupy dumplings. The dim sum wrappings were just right in the thickness, translucency and slight chewiness. I also appreciate the added flavorful garnishes in the sauces that some of the dim sum had. They are ordered a la carte from golf type cards and not from hurried carts like in some other typical dim sum restaurants. There is a smaller variety but it's of excellent quality.
Stumbled on this place based on Google Maps recommendation. And at first we were wary because it does not look like a restaurant let alone a Chinese Dimsum place from the outside. And the place inside is so unlike a Mott Dimsum place, it so clean and and I would not think its this dimsum if not for the Asian clientele. The food was great, the golden fried rice was great and not greasy at all. The dimsum was great, even the hot oil is hotter than usual. We got recommendations from a very affable and so helpful asian waitress. My friends and I, jaded new Yorkers, agreed that the food was on point but the service from that bubbly waitress was really exceptional.
Good food, above average service for a Chinese restaurant. They are known for their coconut dessert, which is quite refreshing. I am disappointed that the black cod is no longer on the menu, but this is a place I will visit once in a while.
The food made for a pretty standard dim sum experience. I like what I got and the place looks very nice, but I wasn't impressed with the food quality. FYI: They charge you tea once you have sat down and they ask if you want some.
Okay dimsum if you're missing chinese food.
Had lunch there today. Tried a variety of dim sum dishes in addition to pork lo mein and choi sum. Everything tasted great! Service was just a bit slow for a lunch time meal, but they were nice.
This is a very trendy restaurant that serves dishes and dim sum. The food was ok for what we paid for but having a nice private room and karaoke made up for that. It can get busy so I would recommend scouting early if you have a large group.
Great food. Best wonton soup ever. General tsos shrimp and chicken was excellent! Beef fried rice to feed an army. Also tried the pork and shrimp dumplings.. my mouth is still watering from them. The gentlemen who sat us wasnt so polite, and rushed us to order. Decor felt like a 70's 80's scarface movie which some could say a little tacky but I didn't mind. Other than that well recommended
Mmmm this review is being written in the middle of my food coma, so forgive me if it isn't as on point and witty as it should be. So my team and I came here at noon for a work bonding event and the upscale restaurant was pretty empty. It fills up more around 12:30, but in general, things were pretty quiet without the clash and shouting typical of a dim sum dining experience full of waiters pushing giant carts of steaming food and shouting patrons. Off the top of my head, I remember the Red Egg Puffs being one of the best dishes I tried. Thin, crispy layers of perfectly fried goodness surround pork and take advantage of the fact that these dim sum items are made to order. The Pan-Fried Tofu were also surprisingly very good. Soft and flavorful, these silky things just melt in your mouth. Roast Pork Buns were good because they're roast pork buns, but they're nothing special to Red Egg. Same goes for all the dumplings I tried. Our Soup Dumplings seemed to have leaked because there wasn't much soup in them. That would probably be the only really negative comment I have on the food. Ok now that I got all those savory dishes out of the way, time to get to the good part of the review: desserts. Let's be honest, this is the only reason I'm even bothering to write a review. OMG that Young Coconut Pudding. Wow. I didn't read any reviews so I didn't know what to expect, but it's served out of actual coconuts! And it tastes just like the fresh coconut drinks filled with coconut meat I used to have as a child before coconuts were cool. Also OMG Sweet Creamy Buns! Holy Sweet Creamy Buns! I watched all of my coworkers take a bite and just scream "wow" and then I took a bite and it was just soooooo good. Soooo sweet and custardy surrounded by a nice pillowy bun. Wow wow wow. Take me back. I am seriously considering just paying a visit to Red Egg to order Red Egg Puffs, Sweet Creamy Buns and Young Coconut Pudding as a mid-day snack because fat.
Great selection of dim sum and Chinese specialties. Duck sliders were particularly delicious...and theatrical as they bring a small trolley out and make them in front of you.
Great dim sum restaurant! Hard to make a bad choice here on the menu. Highly suggest the Peking Duck Sliders and the Coconut Pudding. Worth a visit!
No carts at this joint - which makes for a classier dim sum experience. And unlike most other classic dim sum places, you can come here for dinner. The Peking Duck Sliders are unreal.
Set apart from the usual Chinatown spots. We didn't wait on a Saturday and has nice, spacious decor. Get the shrimp dumplings, pork buns, shanghai dumplings, vege dumpkings, and beef chow fun.
RED EGG - I love this place. I get delivery Was closed by health dept for a short time in April 2018 but After ONE Week - they are taking delivery orders again I assume that they are OK again - I am happy! Pros: - made to order - more intimate setting - employees were very professional, polite, and attentive - very English friendly - most dishes were excellent - clean bathrooms - pretty interior Cons: - a little pricey for dim sum - limited menu (missing a few staple dishes) - a few dishes were very average
A contemporary take on dim sum, good quality food and drinks. As in many establishments, verify your check for any applicable happy hour discounts!
Red Egg, a pretty relaxed upscale Chinese food restaurant and Dim Sum place is great for some excellent food above delivery or the lower tier places in the area. They have private rooms for events as well. The food was pretty good. For a group of 8, we tried pretty much every dim sum available and each was tasty. The soup dumplings were a favorite. It would be nice if they had more than one or two types on the menu. We didn’t get anything from the main menu, but it looked like mostly modern takes on Chinese classics. The menu itself is huge. The cocktail selection is pretty big and everything we tried was enjoyed. The beer menu is a bit small and bottles only which is disappointing. Service was very friendly and surprisingly fast.
We were there today and overall it was pretty good. We had high standards coming from Vancouver which has very good Asian food and we weren’t disappointed. Food was good and service was good too. If I had gone with more people we would have ordered more dishes to try. Tried the pork buns, great. Shrimps rice rolls, very good. Pork and chives dumpling, great. Soup dumplings, very good. Always wanted to try those ones.
Red Egg is one of the very few Dim Sum establishments in NYC where you can make a reservation, which is how we ended up there. We were pleasantly surprised by the very good quality dim sum here! The service was good and restaurant clean. The only reason for a four versus a five was the traditional look and feel, but this certainly wouldn't stop me from returning. Save room for dessert!
Great dim sum without the loudness of other more popular places! Also without the hassle of ordering from carts, as you order off the menu. Quality of food is good, especially the shrimp dumplings! Decor is also nicer than other places.
I came here for desert after a not so good hot pot lunch. I was happy that we had gone there just for pick up because the place was packed. The place is very bright, I can't really comment on the wait staff since I did not dine in. But the cashiers were patient and friendly. I love the cannoli here it's to die for. Since my first visit here I had gone back 3 times within the same month. So I have banned myself from here for awhile but I will definitely be back. P.S I hear the fruit tarts are good too.
Good ordered (not the carts) dim sum option in a quiet part of Chinatown. Feels a little dark and opium-den like, lots of red and black accents. Peking duck buns were nice; they slice the duck at the table.
When I walked in into the restaurant, I saw IKEA lantern lights painted in red and gold against fully black walls. I thought I am going to have another fusion Chinese food experience. But the food turned out to be very authentic. Great experience. The only thing was they seem to be short of people, everything is a bit slow. But I would definitely love going back again.
Came here for a friends birthday. The ambiance is blah... The good thing about this is that it is on Centre and not on Canal, Mott or Elizabeth Street. I have walked past this place many times and I was excited to try it. The place was not packed.. A few tables were occupied.. And there was us. There was a total of 6 of us, we ordered a combination of dim sum and regular Chinese food. The dim sum was good... The dinner selection of dim sum was limited..but was good. Definitely more expensive than the other dim sum restaurants. The main dishes were good.. The Peking duck sliders were delicious, salt and pepper squid was ok, Kung Pak shrimp was ok, beef cubes were tender and was ok, sweet and sour pork would be the winner.. And the sea bass and the seafood fried rice were the most expensive of them all. Sea Bass- was two small sea bass... Was expecting a whole fish based on the price... Was not good $33- and the fried rice... It was tasty, no seafood and $15! Overall... It's an ok restaurant. If you want American Chinese food... Then come here.
For years I've only gone to Golden Unicorn on Sunday afternoons for Dim Sum, and while I still do so, discovering Red Egg's dim sum selection is on par, if not better than, Golden Unicorn's! Small and intimate space, friendly staff and delicious cuisine all at a great price! Highly recommend.
Real Chinese food - if you're missing Taiwan or china, eat in or order out from Red Egg. Sure, the bitter melon in my dish could have been sliced into smaller pieces but that's my only complaint. I've also ordered through seamless and the hakka braised pork was a huge hit at my Chinese food dinner party. The interior is pretty dark but the ambience is nice and you can hear your dining partners.
Where else can you get $2 per dish dim sum that take reservation for large groups on Saturdays? My grandma introduced me to this place and I've been hosting my school's dim sum brunch event here every semester since. Typical Chinese restaurant/dim sum service but everything tastes great! Lots of sweets and savory goodies to go around! My favorites include fried taro with minced pork, roasted pork puff pastry, "snow white" - which basically it's a white pineapple bun with custard"! They constantly try to introduce something new onto their dim sum menu too! They had a new shui mai today with boiled quail egg on top. I prefer the original shui mai after tasting but hey it's nothing new to try!
The service here was excellent, for Chinatown. The restaurant feels clean and the staff is very courteous. We even got pseudo sommelier treatment and had a good chuckle about how the chinese menu items had suggested wine pairings. Dimsum wise the menu is limited and you order off a golf card not off a piping hot rolling cart. But its tasty! The taro pork and cilantro dumpling was a favorite. The red egg crispy roll was really interesting too, filled with rou4 song1 (flossy preserved pork). We tried two desserts. The steamed egg white was like an egg white custard with candied ginger flavoring. It was very good and worth trying, but the hint of sulfury egg white flavor that remained is enough to keep me from craving it or seeking it out a second time. The other dessert is a dimsum classic, liu2 sha1 bao1, hard to find stateside. Its listed as "sweet cream bun" but the name translated is literally "quicksand bun" since the egg yolk filling gives the sweet dessert a nice complementing salty grit. Now, where this restaurant earns a fourth star is it is the perfect place to introduce your non Asian friends to dim sum, which is exactly what we did with a white guy visiting from the rural midwest. Itd also be ideal as a quiet place to conduct a meeting over "Asian tapas" without having to apologize for nasty bathrooms and rude waitstaff. But, expect these upgrades to be reflected in the prices.
This place is tucked away on the block, and you'll see the blaring neon red egg signage from the street. I grew up in Brooklyn and Manhattan eating Chinese dim sum and banquet style foods with family. The quality of food is similar here but a bit pricier for smaller plates. The decor is a little mid century and they're trying to give Chinese cuisine in the area a different face. Fancy bar up front.
Of the reasonably good dim sum restaurants I like this one the most of the ones in/near Chinatown Manhattan. The main reason I like it here is that there are NO carts, why is that still a thing in NYC?!? Sorry, I digress. Instead there's a form that you tick with the items you want and you hand it to your server once you've picked what you want. You'd think New Yorkers would go for this more since it's so much more efficient, but instead people seem to like carts with the SAME items pushed into their faces over and over again. Sorry, I digressed again. So, for people who can't be bothered with all that malarkey come here. The service is better too. The only down side is that the dim sum selection isn't that wide. Most missed - cha siu cheung fun. Noooooo! They have beef cheung fun, but, but, but, why God? Why no cha siu cheung fun? Seems like a fair number of dim sim places don't serve cha siu cheung fun in NYC. Which I find weird, but I'm translating the norm from the UK, I guess. And I digressed again... Update. Went again today, the plus point is that they now have cha siu cheung fun - Yay! Bad point, the dim sum seems to have gone slightly down hill. But I still like the fact there are no carts, it's a quieter experience overall. Hopefully, next time I visit things will have improved.
Food was good. Small portions, overpriced. Waiter did not tell us about no free refills so we spent $2.00 each on a tall shot glass filled with soda.
The pork buns were tasty, and the cashew chicken was very good, but their short ribs were very, very chewy and tough. Service was all right.
I am a tradionalist. Grew up eating dim sum. The decor is very westernized, feels more like a bar, tries to be high end without tasting high end. No person pushing carts. I didn't like the massive doors that make the place look uninviting and shut off. Waitress was lukewarm at best. Basically expect reservation. Food was warm but not hot enough. Chicken feel very meh. I'd rather go to Chinatown and find a hole in the wall for hot dim sum than here. I didn't feel there's much special. The place is quiet though, and you can get some good conversation going
Pretty place in the center of NYC Chinatown. Alas the Shanghai dumplings were not up to par: the soup leaked out from 3 out of 5 dumplings in our order. We told the owner who bought us replacement. Unfortunately , the dumpling skins were equally fragile and had leaked the precious liquids leaving dumplings dried and tasteless. A disappointment!
Good selection of Dim Sum, but I didn't like almost any of them. They were just bland. The Pork/Shrimp Sui Mai were good, but other than that it just wasn't worth it.
Went here to meet my dim sum lover of a mom for lunch. So disappointed. Food lacked flavor and was underwhelming for a place I found on thrillist top 15 NYC dim sum spots! No cart service here either.
I came here with my gf and met up with my 2 friends. I'm not sure if my gf ever had dim sum before. We ordered the chicken feet, shrimp dumpling, pork dumpling, and we shared the peking duck. I am used to the traditional old chicken feet where the cartilage melts away. RE's version is freshly made per order so the nostalgia was not there for me. When the peking duck came out the guy only sliced away the breast meat. There was plenty of duck left over that my friend could have gnawed at. But, to her point. For that price we'd expect more duck for the buck.
Tried this place with my co workers for the lunch as we were in the mood for some decent chinese food. We oredered the food and did not eat here so can't really comment on the service. We had - * Roast Pork Buns * Vegetable Spring rolls * Diced Chicken with cashew nuts * Eggplant with garlic sauce * Sauteed Beef & String Beans * Brown and White rice Man overall the food sucked big time. We ordered food for almost 30 people. Everybody agreed there was no flavor and most of the food is below average. The only thing which I liked were the roast pork buns. Diced chicken tasty funny and eggplant had very little garlic suace and big pieces of eggplant. Very disappointed with food , never ordering again!!
On december 30th i had dinner with my wife and some friends. The friend had given me an $80.00 gift card which he purchased on Nov. 18th for my tretirement party from the red egg restaurant. When it was time to pay we were told the card had zero balance. My friend asked to talk to the manager. The manager recognized him beacause my friend and his wife eat there freaquently. The manager told my friend that was not the card that he sold him and began to tell my friend he was a liar. He embarased my friend and after i told him that my friend had given me that gift card and that it was in my possesion since Nov. 18th he decided to give us the credit . We all left the place pretty embarased. The Manager needs some people skill.
Anyone whom refers to this restaurant as "good" has never eaten dim sum. The quality is poor and food is heavily fried and full of fat to cover the poor quality. I am an American whom has been loving dim sum for over 30 years. This was not even close. Seems to be catering to small bar scene at happy hour and over priced dim sum which is half off limited and frankly odd. My son took me here thinking from reviews it would be great sadly the only thing great was spending time with me son. I got ill when I returned home after meal. Go elsewhere where the population is chinese and cartes are scene . This idea that made to serve is fresher is crazy. the limited few items are not characteristic of dim sum , please don't use this restaurant experence as dim sun find another place for this wonderful meal not Red Egg.
