Opinions de Sarge's Delicatessan & Diner New York
Sarge's Deli in NYC is the real deal, offering an exceptional dining experience. Their Reuben sandwich is hands down the best I have ever had, and their cheesecake and banana cream pie are among the finest I've ever tasted. Trust me, it's worth trying Sarge's over Katz deli any day. The only minor drawback is the servers, who may not be as interactive as expected. However, as long as you know what you want, this won't be a significant issue.
This is one of the best pastramis in NYC, you will not be disappointed (however it is still #2 behind Katz for me) it is definitely more of a cozy experience than Katz where you have a waiter and it is way less busy. If you are looking to try a NYC pastrami without the pain of a line definitely come here. Authentic stuff much respect
Old school NYC Jewish kosher deli serving the classic hot pastrami, corn beef sandwiches, matzo ball soup, cheese blintzes, and much more. Located in the Murray Hill neighborhood on 3rd Ave between E. 36th & 37th St. Like walking into a time capsule, the vibe is casual, service is excellent, high quality ingredients, well prepared, delicious food, highly recommended. Good luck with street parking. Subway station a few blocks away. Support your local small businesses & restaurants 👍
Visiting New York and looking for a place that serves traditional NY cheesecake. Found this diner through some food blog post and decided to give it a try. Truly not disappointed with the cheesecake. You can make a meal just with a single piece of cheesecake, definitely shareable between two people. Perfect airiness and not superdense, also right sweetness. Generally the portion for all the dishes is quite big - eat half and then bag the other half for another meal. The service is fast. Visited later in the evening so it wasn't too busy. Too bad my time in NY is short otherwise would come back again.
The food here was INCREDIBLE! There are so many delicious and authentic dishes to try! My favorite thing to order is the Chicken Parm sandwich and the matzo soup! The serving size is MASSIVE! The food quality was incredible and I highly recommend eating here! It is a hidden gem, and who doesn’t love an authentic meal?! The service was also incredible… oh and they have TONS of delicious desserts too!!
The service was great! The pastrami was delicious and yummy. The meatloaf was a bit on the dry side , though. Our orders got mixed up and we ate a hot dog by mistake, whichwas very stupid of us but the server was really nice! The Knish that we were told to try was also good but no wow factors there! We loved the atmosphere and the service.
I order Sarge's Deli for my Staff after very hard days. The food is among the best Deli's in the city and the portions are old school gigantic as they should be. This time we ordered "The Hudson" , a Pastrami Samich, and the Loco Chicken along with some Fries, a Chocolate Shake, and two Dr. Brown's Cream sodys. Sarge's is one of my go-to places and stands out among the Deli's as the unsung hero .
Absolutely amazing. I haven't eaten so tasty for a long time. Matzo ball soup: rich broth, and matzo ball tasted like if there was meat inside. Big portion. Pastrami sandwich: just 2 pieces of bread with LOTS of juicy meat between them. Maybe a little expensive, but worth it. Pickles and coleslaw: also very good, especially the half-sour pickle. Service: very friendly. Highly recommended.
Wow we loved this place. Fast service. Great food. I had the brisket an rye with cheese fries. He had the Sarge's favorite. Two different tables asked what he had and said they will get that next time. The cheesecake was outstanding! They have free refills have Coke products. We also got this drink called the lendgendary egg cream drink. We had both chocolate and vanilla. Oh also the matzo ball soup was delicious. A NYC must. Can't wait to come back.
Great location and even better food. The Matzo Ball soup is fabulous, easily better than my mother made. The meat platter with potato salad is enough for four people, I failed to eat as much as I wanted to and we boxed the rest to go. Service is efficient and ideal, I waited ten minutes for the table but it gave me a chance to chat to David the young guy managing the line. I can’t recommend this place enough!!! Will be back soon.
Woooooooow... this plaaace!!! They have everything: perfect food, nice and clean premises, fast service and veeery welcoming staff! Next time we're in NYC, we'll definitely go back to dive into those amazing pastrami sandwiches and huge portion of crunchy fries. They deserve all the fame and respect they've built throughout the years. See you soon, guys!
We ate at Sarge's twice on our most recent New York adventure. It was that good! The food there is so, so good! Very fresh, generous portions. We had their vegetarian and regular burgers with the crinkle cut and sweet potato fries. We also had their chicken salad and turkey sandwiches. Their homemade cheesecake is the best in New York! We tried both the oreo and reese's slices! Huge and extremely dense pieces that were so amazing! Inside, the atmosphere is relaxed and casual and we could easily talk to each other without it being too noisy. Service was kind, friendly and attentive. Highly recommend Sarge's!
What a classic New York experience. The giant pastrami & corned beef sandwiches were fantastic, as was the "Robin" (grilled open pastrami, swiss cheese and sauerkraut sandwich). Great burgers too, and the crinkle cut skin-on fries are super. Complimentary homemade coleslaw and pickles are so good. We also shared a slice of pound cake which was delicious.
Chose sarge's over the other establishments on combination of distance and reviews. So I don't have much to weigh it against. It was the best pastrami I've ever had, tender, juicy thin cut slices piled high upon the softest must supple rye bread I've ever had. The cream slaw was as good as any PA Dutch establishment you can find. I devoured it. The Pickles were outstanding, crisp with plenty of crunch and loaded with salty sour flavor. The strawberry cheesecake i took back to the hotel was some 3-4" thick, velvety smooth, but not too rich. Dr. Browns root beer was better than other gourmet style sodas I've had like Hanks. The atmosphere was great. The waitress was great. Leaving this place felt like a NYC achievement, a handshake of understanding there are no doubts about this institution of classic New York cuisine.
If you want the famous NY style deli experience Sarge's is definitely worth a try. Food is really good and portions are huge... even their appetizer portions! Try the Third Avenue which has pastrami, corned beef, on an open rye bread sandwich with curly fries and stuffed derma and the stuffed cabbage. Finish it off with an iconic piece of NY style cheesecake and coffee.
Went here for the first time a few weeks back. Just forgot to write a review. The best jewish deli ever. Been to katz, 4th street here in philly. The pastrami was so tasty and cut thinner which i loved. Matzo ball soup was out control. My wife also got a 3 meat platter. Good pickles that arrive on the table. Higly highly recommend.
This place is amazing! Been coming here for 20 years, ever since I got a tip about it from a guy in a dive bar nearby. Portions are huge. Meat practically melts in your mouth. Perfectly spiced corned beef and the pastrami is killer. Classic diner atmosphere. If you’re looking for a fine dining experience, this isn’t it. And it doesn’t try to be. It’s amazing food, made right, in a cramped space. And it’s worth your time and money to eat here.
The most amazing diner. Not all polish and patter, but a warm welcome and staff who have genuine smiles and want to engage and assist. We felt very welcome and were given help with our orders. The food was just fantastic. Be ready to be very full, but totally satisfied and pleased. Huge portions of quality, well-prepared food. We even boxed some up to take back to our hotel. It would have been a crime to waste any. Next time we come to NYC, we WILL come to Sarge's again!!!
Just a great old school Jewish deli in Midtown serving delicious food. They put out a solid pastrami on rye. It is thinly sliced and I prefer a bit thicker cut. But they do pack it high and it’s juicy and full of flavor so not complaining too much. They also do a great Matzah ball soup, which was perfect for a cold day.
Kate, who seated everyone, apologized for the wait, which was not too long at 2 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon. It was worth it. Portions are very generous, quality high, waitstaff very personable and vibrant clientele while a fellow native New Yorker and I were there. I think that almost everyone else was a tourist, all very impressed with the place. I had been meaning to return before this and will definitely be back soon, especially if I want to take out dinner. High praise to everyone for keeping those waiting informed as tables opened and allowing the very busy countermen and waitstaff to catch a breath, too. P.S. I had to take half of my sandwich and most of my side dish home for dinner. Even reheated, it was delicious!
I’ve been to here several times over the years, and it never disappoints. If you’re looking for that classic New York deli vibe, this is the place to go. The portions are very large and food is consistently amazing. Sarge’s is a must-visit spot for an authentic NYC deli experience.
Visited this evening after mulling over whether I should go to Katz. Touring the area from down South and while I've heard many other tourists suggesting Katz, a local working in Saks on Fifth convinced me that this was the place to go. A brisk, 35-minute walk, and I was seated. We ordered the Pastrami and Corned Beef sandwich, a brisket sandwich, fries, and two fountain drinks (coke and lemonade). Vee took our order and made recommendations... she did not disappoint! My pastrami and corned beef sandwich was flavorful, tender, and nearly perfect. The accompaniment of pickles and slaw were equally nice. The fries were hot and greaseless; and absolute delight. Unknowingly, the star of the show, however, was the brisket sandwich with a side of gravy: EXCEPTIONAL! Tender. Moist. Seasoned to perfection and the gravy was the perfect enhancement; you can't act for a better pairing! Vee was kind enough to bring me a sampling of sliced brisket and gravy (my spouse consumed hers before I got a chance to try hers). Vee did so unsolicited; such outstanding customer service! I NOW have a new favorite without a doubt: the brisket. I also now have a new favorite deli in Sarge's. If ever you're in the area, I urge you to visit this traditional, cozy eatery with quality meats and authentic customer service. You will not be disappointed! Thank you, Vee, for the wonderful experience and for introducing us to the wonderment that is brisket and gravy and Sarge's! Haven't eaten the oreo cheesecake yet, but I plan to soon and will update this review afterward.
In town on business but I’ve heard Sarge’s Deli was the local favorite. Since I’ve been to Katz I figured I would go here and try their famous corned beef and pastrami on rye. The sandwich had a Russian cole slaw topping that enhanced the taste of the sandwich. Since it is early Feb, I had their vegetable soup which was also tasty and came out hot. Both items are big portions of food. They offer a 10% discount if paying by cash, which is preferred. However, they do accept card payments as well. Staff were very friendly and had a cozy atmosphere. Well worth a visit.
My father and I visited this delicatessen for lunch on a Saturday, and it did not disappoint! As expected, we started with pickles and coleslaw, a classic touch. For the main course, I ordered the open-faced roast beef with fries, while my dad chose Sarge’s favorite pastrami with potato pancakes and applesauce. The roast beef was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, and the sliced rye bread underneath added a delightful touch with its caraway seeds, which elevated the whole dish. My dad couldn’t stop raving about the potato pancakes, calling them the best he’s ever had. If you’re on the east side and looking for a quick, delicious bite, I highly recommend giving this spot a try!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "The best-kept secret in NYC!" Sarge’s Diner is easily the best-kept secret in New York. While tourists line up elsewhere, you get the real, authentic experience here. We make it a tradition to visit every time we are in NYC. Why you should go: * No Wait: There’s always a free table and no annoying queues. * Authentic Food: Huge portions that actually fill you up. * Top Recommendation: If you want Pastrami, you MUST order the Reuben Pastrami. It’s incredible! * Service & Price: The staff is always friendly and top-notch. Plus, the prices are fair without any "tourist surcharge." A clear recommendation for anyone looking for the real deal in Manhattan!
I was so eager to try the pastrami sandwich from one of the recommended delis. Fortunately sarges is well located, the interior decor has an old fashioned charm. The portions were huge, I couldn't finish my soup as I knew my sandwich was on its way. The beef was so tender and went really well with the pickle. The soup was very clean tasting and I imagined great on a cold day but the star was the pastrami.
Was going to goto Katz's on our recent NYC trip, this place was suggested instead since it was only a few blocks from Times Square, one of our stops. The hostess was really friendly and welcoming. Glad we went here instead, the portions were huge, we only ate half the sandwich and have yummy left overs for tonight. The quality of the meats (half pastrami, half corned beef) was top notch. Wish we lived closer, we would be here weekly for sure!!
I don’t mean to disc Katz deli, it is really great. But it is so impossible to try to get in there. We needed to find an alternative. Sarge is definitely fit the bill. Food was fantastic. Service was great and friendly. Prices were right in line with what I expected. We didn’t have to wait we got seated. We got fed. We got comfortable. Awesome pastrami. What a great day. Thanks guys
My mother was on the hunt for a New York pastrami sandwich this evening, so I did a Google search and ran across Sarge's Delicatessen and Diner and placed an order. First, the food arrived ahead of the estimated delivery time, which was great, but the food also arrived fresh and hot! Major plus in my book!! My mother then tried her sandwich and stated that it was DELICIOUS!! Everthing was well-balanced and definitely more than enough food to share. I tried the chicken salad and egg salad only. Both were delicious as well. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are visiting NYC!
The food here was terrific. I was visiting New York over 4th of July holiday and we had dinner here and it was fantastic. You couldn't get more authentic deli than this one! I definitely eat here again! I had the soup and sandwich The soup was vegetable and the sandwich was ham and Swiss on rye. They also gave me a dish of pickles with coleslaw fantastic I would definitely eat here again.
Honestly, the entire experience was great. I had the pastrami and corned beef sandwich and a slice of cheesecake to go. The sandwich was bountiful and filling, but I guess I expected more spice from the sliced pastrami? It was tender but lacked that punch of flavor I was hoping for. The cheesecake was amazing though.
I’ve been to New York many times and this is my favorite deli by far. Unbelievable freshness. You must get this pastrami, no matter what. Also, the cheesecake is super legit as well. Forget every other deli. They have nothing on this one. Also, as a bonus, they have awesome skin on snapping type of hotdogs. Those are legit too.
I remember coming here years ago. My boyfriend was super excited to try the pastrami sandwich since it's his first time so we went here for lunch. I decided to get the Scrambled Whites, toasted with home fries on the side and he went for the Hot Pastrami sandwich. We also couldn't resist trying their chocolate milkshake. It was really good! One thing I noticed is that the portions are huge and super satisfying. Just a heads up we went around noon and it was pretty busy so you might want to plan accordingly. Food arrived quickly and service was good. We'll come back again.
Sarge's can't be beat! The Katz crowd should be up here instead of waiting in line down there. It's $30 for the pastrami, 🤷🏼 a little heavy on the wallet but it's a good amount of pastrami. The guys behind the counter that make the sandwiches are real mensches. A great place. Worth the trip over to the Eastside if you're not from around there.
Everything was so good. The food was delicious and the cheesecake wasn’t overly sweet. More like a block of cheese which I liked.
Visited this place back in early November 2023 to catch up with an old friend. Originally wanted to take out some pastrami sandwich, which I did. But we had dessert of Cheesecake and I am a lemon meringue pie person, and it was incredible! The take out pastrami sandwich was also delicious when I got back to the accommodation for a late night supper. Personally, prefer the thinner cuts for my sandwiches. The staff were incredibly kind and fun to talk with! Warm regards from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! And hope to be back in due time!
Sarge’s Delicatessen & Diner is one of those classic NYC spots that still gets it right. I ordered the tuna salad and the corned beef, and both were exactly what you want from a real deli. The tuna salad was fresh, well-seasoned, and not overly heavy, and the corned beef was tender, flavorful, and piled high the way it should be. The portions are generous, the food feels old-school in the best way, and the vibe is pure New York diner energy. It’s the kind of place you come to when you want something filling and reliable, not trendy. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the mood for a proper deli meal.
(Last visited December 19, 2023.) Working in Manhattan for the week and as I'm working my way through the many restaurants I have bookmarked, I have finally made my way to Sarge's. Here's how it went! Do they even need my review? Nope, but they're gonna get it anyway! Lol. Atmosphere/Appearance: It's an elongated style restaurant with lots of light wood on top of brick and just tons of memorabilia all over the place of celebrities who have passed through these doors. When you first walk in you're greeted by the host's stand then there are a few tables on your left, small booths on the right and then further back the dining room opens up a bit. Up front is the actual meat counter where through the glass you can see the different cuts of meat, vegetables and much more! The noise level was moderate, but this place wasn't meant to be fancy. Service: The menu was enormous. There were so many things to choose from! I can't remember the name of the young lady that took care of me, but I feel like her name started with a G... or maybe it was a J.? I don't know, but she was awesome. Food: Some restaurants give you complimentary bread, this place gives you 2 kinds of pickles and coleslaw. Lol. One of them is like a super cucumbery-like pickle and I'm just not a fan of those. I was able to try 2 different kinds of sandwiches while here. First was the corned beef and these were enormous sandwiches. Like, seriously. First up was the corned beef which was just perfect. Warm, salty, meaty and the Russian dressing added a little bit of sweetness that help cut the salty, heartiness of the sandwich. The choice of bread was grand because it added just a little bit of flavor, but didn't take away from the ingredients inside the bread. The pastrami sandwich was great as well, but it couldn't hold a candle to the corned beef. That could be a personal preference, but that's just how I feel. This one looked a bit different even though the main coloration is similar to the corned beef, the pastrami had a black crust around the edges of each slice from all the additional spices that are added to the brined beef. It's just upper echelon quality beef that Sarge's serves. Excellently executed. Lastly, I finished with the thickest slice of strawberry cheesecake that I've seen in recent years. Lol. Once I put a bite in my mouth I couldn't do anything but laugh. It was so good. So creamy, juicy, cold and just... perfect. I wouldn't change a thing about it! Value: My sandwich was $30.95 in which half of it was corned beef and half was pastrami. The cheesecake was $12.95, but it was gigantic. The food here was pricey, but the portions were OUTRAGEOUS. Lol. I'd say it was totally worth the money because you'll have stuff to take home. Each sandwich can totally feed 2 people. In conclusion, I loved it here and was happy to have finally made it! I'll surely come back in the future to check out some of their other menu items! You should too!
Love this place. Saw it on YouTube, it’s very famous in New York as Sarge’s has the best pastrami sandwiches and it didn’t disappoint, best pastrami I’ve had. Service was fast, food was generous and extremely delicious and the staff is very polite and friendly, I’ll come back next time I’m in New York City, thanks
This is our first family trip to New York and we wanted to go to a classic deli. We decided to go to Sarge’s as we were in uptown. This was amazing. I got the pastrami sandwich but asked to have half a pastrami sandwich and half a corned beef sandwich to have a taste of both. The lady was very accommodating and was able to get this done for me. The pastrami beef was very generous, as was the corn beef. The pastrami beef was not too salty and was very tender. The corned beef was also very good and seasoned well so that you could taste the beef and also could differentiate between the corned beef and pastrami. The turkey sandwich that my wife got also had very generous meat slices. Also, complementary, the coleslaw and pickles came. The pickles were both the fresh pickles that were lightly Brined and the more heavily brined classic pickles. The coleslaw was a moderately sweet slaw with only a slight amount of mayonnaise. In the sandwich, was a very nice crunchy component to the sandwich. I have never been to Katz’s deli so I couldn't tell you whether this was better or the same as Katz’s, but I can tell you that I will definitely come back here as I did not have to wait for a table, and the service was excellent.
Walking into Sarge’s I knew the food would be genuinely delicious. The restaurant immediately gave the old school, original deli impression. The french onion soup was the best I’ve tried. I am not a fan of pastrami on rye as a dish, but I could easily tell this was probably as good as the dish can get. The pastrami was tender and perfectly seasoned. Definitely recommend dining here.
This was my preferred restaurant experience during our 8-day trip to New York with my family this summer. We loved everything about this Deli, it was everything I was expecting. I had the pastrami sandwich (go for a half one with soup, that will be more than enough already) and it was incredible. The staff was very helpful and kind.
Amazing pastrami, friendly service, and great vibes. Meat was tender, light, easy to eat. Didn’t need cheese or sauerkraut, but great with a touch of mustard or coleslaw. Fries were a bit heavy in the oil. Apple strudel to go was good but cold and might be better heated. Very busy place but got quickly seated for party of 2 on Sunday around noon. Among the better diners I’ve been to. Definitely will be back!

The only place in the city to get a deli sandwich. The pastrami melts in your mouth!!. Old school diner worth any wait in line.
One of the best authentic delis left in NYC. When visiting I always get the half sandwich and soup special. A classic!
Just had a gift box of black and whites. Delicious. Especially with tea or coffee. Live out of state and never heard of Sarges Deli. Would definitely go there if in NYC.

Very good pastrami sandwich! Walked in, great place, service and food. No need to wait in line forever. All dishes come with pickles and Cole slaw.
This is an excellent deli with good hot food. We had pastrami sandwiches for mains and it was excellent. The atmosphere and decoration was great and the service was fine.
I grew up on LA Jewish deli and this place did not disappoint! Local family insisted that Sarge’s was more authentic and better than Katz’s. I wholeheartedly agree. I had the pastrami/corned beef sandwich. It was delicious. I do however wish that the rye was a bit stronger to hold that meat on a sandwich. The coleslaw was perfect. The real secret was in their “deli weli” (deli Wellington) which was by far almost a religious experience. Knish were great too!
Tldr; good Jewish deli, a bit sad and rough around the edges, but p goood food and service - had the matzo ball soup, pastrami sandwich, and special platter - was p good, we hadn't tried the apple sauce, knish, and sour cream combo - that was surprisingly nice! - decor was dated and worn. Not a lot of traffic on a Friday night. - the wait staff were older. Friendly and recommended great stuff! - not sure if we'd come back, but would definitely be down if it was convenient
Wherrrre do I begin? I've been going to Sarge's for way over a decade now, and while I loved the fare and the truly unique ambiance of this quintessential New York deli, I've been a little disappointed the past few times I've been there. The food just doesn't seem to taste with the same fresh quality it used to have. The pastrami seemed a bit dry, and the mini burgers slightly overcooked. They have a sick deli though, where you can get any cold cut imaginable (including tongue!), all sorts of cheese, and all the good salads you can ask for (e.g. chicken salad, whitefish salad, potato salad, tuna salad, etc. etc.) and those are always fresh and tasty there. The staff at the deli has it down for sure, but make sure you know what you're ordering because they are nice but not beacons of patience. You can also get a little confused with the dynamic of where to order vs when/ where to pay. But the attitude of some of the waitresses falls right along that borderline NY-rude ride, but you have to be there to appreciate their annoyance with you when you order. 😉 It's one of those places that I keep rooting for because there aren't many left in the city like it. It's nostalgic; but I just hope the kitchen catches up to the deli, and I hope they can bring those prices down some because it's always been pricey. So be ready to shell out some bucks when you go... Regardless, you do need to go, at least once, if anything, for the experience. Then you'll make your own mind about it. It used to be a 5 star for me... I know they'll earn it back!
I've recently told myself, you need to try a good Jewish Deli in NYC. So we did...overall I had a good time; very busy and that didn't bother me, it was the place to be during lunch hour; I got the pastrami...added their house-made coleslaw (which I liked) and russian dressing...it was very good. I wanted it to be a little more juicy but great meal non-the-less; Great waitress and service; Interesting conversation at the table next top us...I hope those 2 guys hit it big on those funds and stocks you were looking to buy, lol; A+ overall.
I visited this place as you “must do” pastrami when in NYC. I was not impressed by the experience. The waitresses had the “oh no another day here to survive” look on their face and were serving in a robotic fashion. The pastrami is a significant portion. I would say it tasted fairly good but nothing mind blowing. I like meat but the whole concept of 95% meat 5% bread is somehow strange and half way through the sandwitch I started to feel I dont want to eat meat for 2 days. The pickles were not bad but we have better at home. Overall if you do not feel you really desire a huge portion of pure meat of nice but not outstanding taste I would say dont feel FOMO if you dont eat pastrami in NYC or at least not here.
Obviously this place is world famous so we were very excited to go. Honestly it was a bit mixed. Beautiful cured and roasted meats, all delicious but the service was very slow. Portions are huge. A sandwich is more than enough for two. Desserts looked amazing but we were stuffed after lunch. Small inside so not easy to get in and out from the tables. Definitely worth the experience.
Good pastrami and corned beef on rye with coleslaw and Russian dressing. Not very busy like Katz. And less touristy. They slice the meat very thin versus Katz. I still prefer Katz, beace Katz meat is cut thicker but you can taste the spices in the meat more at Katz.
🤪"Note that this review only covers my specific order at Sarge's, not the entire menu. My taste preferences are heavily influenced by my background in Thai food." I ordered the Pastrami Reuben which consisted of 2 delicious crunchy pickles on top of coslaw and a Pastrami on rye*open Faced with Swiss Cheese and Sauerkraut, Grilled To Perfection, so they say. *"The pastrami was dry to perfection on my end." I think this combination of a baked melted cheese on rye absorbed a lot of the juice that would normally be dripping and melting in my mouth right?, not so Mr. REUBEN! Call it a fluke and tell me something malfunctioned with my sandwich because first impression is everything, at least with me. Believe all the hype folks about this sandwich if you want, but my sandwich taste was Blanche and needed something on the inside between all those layers of pastrami, and NO I am not adding the usual KETCHUP FIX.. 😆 lol. More than thirty bucks for a sandwich that couldn't bring out a smile in me? This sandwich should be demoted from Sarge's to Corporal. *Bathrooms: 2 separate co-ed bathrooms were very clean and presentable with all the amenities. *Parking: Good luck finding that. *Wheelchair accessible: No automatic door opener, but I am sure a wheelchair can get through. Restaurant nastalgic with plenty of movie stars and strong man pictures on the walls signed. Waitresses very attentive and polite with great attitudes. Comfortable atmosphere. Two large TVs with the Olympics on and no sound thanks, a plus*. Two bus routes pass by restaurant. M34 from Penn Station 34th Street cross town, get off at 3rd Avenue and walk to 36th street. M101,102,103 North and South on 3rd avenue, get off at 36th or 37th. Final thoughts: I didn't find my dish all that tastey and that's ashame, because I almost went for a slice of their famous strawberry cheesecake as I paid my bill and strolled out. *The Review Guru Long Island NY 🙋
traditional Jewish deli with high quality food. pruces definitely on the high side for sandwiches. we ordered chicken soup with matzoball and kreplah to start and it was quite large. It was very tasty, not as salty as traditional style. We split the recommended pastrami/corned beef sandwich, which was piled high! both meats were cut thin, as it should be. some places cut it thick, and you can't even bite through it! i'm usually strictly a pastrami lover. However, I truly loved the corned beef much better. The reason for this is the pastrami was very lean taking away from the flavor; it was actually quite dry. The corned beef had more fat and was therefore much tastier and moist. served with complimentary coleslaw and pickles, which were excellent, especially loved that the coleslaw wasn't full of mayo and the half sour pickle was surprisingly extra good.. The rye bread was fresh, soft and yummi. Even the coffee was pretty good! worth the visit.
I stumbled on this place looking for a late(ish) evening meal, around 9PM. It was a slower period, which I appreciated as I didn't feel rushed. The matzoh ball soup was amazing-- one of the best broths I have had, and the matzoh ball was large and fluffy. I also got a half pastrami sandwich, which was flavorful, with lots of meat, and soft, fresh, rye bread. There were good pickles and coleslaw served with, too, and nice mustard on the table. I had a delicious Brooklyn IPA, and finished with a ginormous slice of cheesecake, which wasn't photogenic, but was delicious. I'll definitely be back.
Authentic New York deli without the tourist hype We originally planned to visit Katz’s, but locals suggested Sarge’s instead—and it was a great choice. The food quality was excellent, with generous portions and authentic flavors, but without the overwhelming tourist vibe and social media frenzy of Katz. The atmosphere was more peaceful and relaxed, making it a enjoyable deli experience.
I’ve never had a cold cut sandwich quite like this before. The amount of corned beef and pastrami was a bit overwhelming for us, even for someone like me who usually enjoys meat heavy dishes. But for a cold cut, it wasn’t really my preference. If you’re into cold cut sandwiches piled high like this, you definitely won’t be disappointed as this place does deliver in both quality and quantity. My wife and I split one sandwich easily, and it was more than enough to fill us up. The flavor made it so much easier to enjoy and was the sole reason that helped me finish that generous portion of beef. All in all, it’s a solid deal if you’re planning to share.

We saw reviews of this place on Yelp. We were extremely happy with the service and pastrami sandwiches we had. Tasted great and the portions were great!
This is not the place to come if you’re not very hungry! The Pastrami Rueben was delicious, as was the super chicken soup with kreplach and matzoh balls.

Excellent corned beef sandwich. Make sure you add a little mustard. My wife had the soup and 1/2 pastrami sandwich and it was also very good.

OK the pastrami was totally tender and tasty. But I was a bit surprised by how little of it we got considering the price. And the potato salad we ordered was just potatoes, mayo and sugar. Really below average. Finally, my egg cream was quite good but milk, chocolate syrup and seltzer for $6? Sorry that’s ridiculous. So while I loved the pastrami, I just had too many issues with the other stuff to make it more than average.
This place is a classic for corned beef & pastrami deli sandwiches. I had the sandwich which came with pickles and the slaw which was great. The sandwich itself was huge. I wanted to do a split with a soup but the two meat option didn't allow for that. The sandwich itself was decent but I didn't feel or taste a lot of flavor from either meat. It was both very tender but there didn't seem to be much from that or the spread that came with the rye bread. The staff was able to get my order within a reasonable time when I arrived, but it took some time to get my food but also it took some time to get my water refill. There was many staff around and not as many people or tables filled at all. So I thought that was a bit odd. The decor looks very vintage and classic leather seats.
I found Sarge's to be decent, though it lacked a wow factor. Still, it was worth a visit. The pastrami wasn't dry, but it also wasn't particularly impressive, and the flavors were somewhat underwhelming. However, the portions were generous. Surprisingly, the highlight of my visit turned out to be the French Onion Soup.
And again.. Google reviews coming through with the accurate score. This may or may not be an NYC institution and the food and ambiance reflects such ambivalence. My compatriots western omelette was a well-done miss but my BLT was most excellent so points for that. Fresh lettuce and tomato, with ample NYC bacon. Pretty good! I would t rush back but I’m glad to know Sarge’s is there in midtown east.
Sarge's is one of those places that popped up during your research for NYC. I went for the pastrami sandwich..it was okay, but it probably didn't live up to the hype.. I was straight and seated without issue. Service was timely. The beer is upsettingly warm. If you're looking for the best pastrami sandwich,.keep looking, this isn't it.. If you want to try a pastrami sandwich in a hearty NYC setting, then try this place. Just don't think it's going to be the best..
It’s ok. I have been here a few times but have decided it just isn’t really worth the price. It’s worth a try if you haven’t been here. I get the pastrami and corned beef sandwich. The prices are just too high. Katz’s is actually cheaper and in my opinion better even though it’s touristy. The normal delis up the street are also a good option. Better service too.
I came to Sarge’s looking for a more local alternative to the overly hyped Katz’s (which I’m not a fan of), hoping for something a bit more low-key and authentic. The atmosphere definitely delivered—classic New York deli vibes, loud and full of energy, with tons of character and history lining the walls. That part felt genuine and fun. The food, though, was a letdown. The pastrami itself was great—tender, flavorful, what you’d hope for—but everything else felt phoned in. Bland sides, forgettable sandwiches, and overall pretty generic for the price. Service was unfortunately the worst part. Rushed, inattentive, and just flat-out unfriendly. Plates were practically tossed onto the table, requests for drink refills or minor changes were ignored, and a couple side items we ordered never even showed up. Maybe it was just a bad day at the store but not somewhere I’d go out of my way to revisit. Good spot, great pastrami—but not much else.
A must visit to the legendary Sarge’s whilst in New York. The place is quite small and looks dated, probably to keep the feel. Outstanding service, unbeatable. The pastrami on rye was soft and tender, however, it was a little bland, seasoning needed. I have never tried Matzo ball soup and was so keen after seeing all the reviews. Probably just me, but it’s like soft corn bread in chicken soup. Nothing wrong with it, but I’m not going to rave about it ! Great Colombian coffee, the pickles, I have had way better tbh. I’m glad I’ve been, I will try Katz next.

Overall, this was a disappointing experience. The service was shocking and made us feel uncomfortable the whole time we were there. I don’t think I have had an experience where I felt less welcome in a restaurant. Here are some of the reasons why... - It felt like we didn’t exist. While we were waiting to be acknowledged, another table was attended to three times (just checking in). - When she came over (with slaw and pickles) she split dressing over the table without any apology or assistance in containing the spill. - One of our two meals came out so long before the other mean, my partner had finished eating before mine even arrived. - General tone of the waitress was rude. When we asked for the check it felt like we were being a pain. Was happy to get out of there. This is disappointing as we know there are a few good options around there selling the same meals for the same price. Luckily the food here tastes good - Otherwise I would have rated it lower.
Sandwich is very good but nothing as special as all the YouTube creators recommend when they talk about NYC BEST PLACES TO GO. And the service is AWFUL, waiters are very unfriendly, they vary between ignoring you and being rude, they keep talking my to each other like they’re not working. The place itself is ugly and people who were there also. Definitely NOT A PLACE TO GO IN NYC
I looked for somewhere for NY cheesecake and saw this place, good reviews so took the 20m walk. Not super busy for a Friday evening, took a long time for someone to even acknowledge we were there. No hello, welcome in, nothing! Finally we're called to a table, not come and get us called from across the restaurant. Really? Waitress slaps the water down and menu and walks away, no Hello no how are you, I'm so and so I'll be you server for tonight, nope nothing! Finally comes back for order, seemed truly upset at all we wanted was dessert. Never checked on us again. We finished and tried to get her attention to get to go container, ignored! I went to deli to get it myself. Passed us 2 more times and finally realized it was wrapped to go and gave us our check. Normally I'll tip extra for a smaller order and good customer service. Not tonight bare minimum just like the experience i had tonight. Lomg time staples will not last with bad service, doesn't matter good good the food may be! Cheesecake was really good though.
Overhyped and very ordinary. Maybe we just visited on a day where the waitress was angry, and meat was being rationed, but our sandwiches had about half of the meat you see posted by all of the social media influencers, and what meat was there was dry and lacked much flavour. Quite possibly if I'd been carrying a GoPro pointed at my face and been asking people to "Like and Subscribe" I might have got a decent sandwich and less aggressive service from a waitress that seemed like she hated both me and her life. Looking at the photos in the other reviews, and the glowing 5 star ratings, I feel like I've been straight-up scammed. Wasn't expecting this from Sarges. Super disappointing for something I've looked forward to for so long.
food was actually decent, but their front of house lady (who has probably been here for years) is goving serious Delores Umbridge. The half pastrami half corned beef is something I would go back for, on par with Katz’s for sure. But the slow service / meh attitude when needing help / refills / ketchup that isn’t empty makes me not want to go back. Shame, could have been good if it weren’t for the people.

What a terrible disappointment! 80$ later and I’m going to have to get lunch somewhere else. My husband had the Pastrami sandwich on a very white kinda rye bread and found it dry and without flavor…
Large group tax wtf People should be obligated to tell the customers that. 50$ to the trash, and its a sandwich below average!!!!
