Opinions de Shogun Japanese Restaurant New York
The best gastronomic experience we had in NYC, and one of the best experiences overall in the city in general! Not only the sushi was amazing but the service was very kind, they even sang the happy birthday to my partner 😄. I am so happy we decided to go here! Whenever we return to New York we'll visit it again. THANK YOU / Gracias!!
One of the best experiences we had in NYC. We did the omakase C with Wagyu pairing - Carol was our waitress and Vincent was our chef - absolutely wonderful people. The sushi was so fresh and pairings were delicious (uni + miso cod hand roll.. wagyu + caviar). lovely hidden gem & the service was above and beyond.- Tom and Maila
Amazing food with great ambience. We sat at the counter and watched the chef hand craftily make us each piece. Every bite came filled with flavor and excellence. Totally recommend!
Went here last Saturday with a buddy and it was exceptional. The maître d' & chef Roy provided some of the best service I’ve had anywhere. The sake was served in one of the most innovative ways I’ve ever had. The sushi was incredible. We ate there at the counter but I had to snap a shot of the amazing togo omakase they made for another order. Highly recommended.
Came here randomly on a Thursday evening after a work conference. Seated in the cozy corner chair of the clean, inviting, lively (after 7ish) sushi bar, I enjoyed beautiful, fresh flavors constructed by true masters of their craft. While I didn't opt for one of the tasting menu options, my seatmates, two women of discerning taste enjoying a night of delectables, provided visions of artful creations, covered in roe and gold flakes. Ryan, who is truly an absolute gem of a human being, capped off my evening with a dessert on the house. A sweet ending to an unexpectedly perfect dining experience.
A small clean place with delicious food. The service is perfect. Aside of that, the atmosphere is perfect for a business lunch, there is no loud music and you can speak in comfort. I'd suggest having omakase for such a meetup, it guarantees the stable flow of food for each participant.
Hands down one of the best omakase I have been to. 10/10 experience and all dishes were of the highest quality with incredible attention to detail. I had the omakase B and it was one of the best sushi I have ever had. If you haven’t tried omakase style sushi, be sure to stop by here as it is a whole new experience that will leave you never wanting regular sushi again! Definitely will be coming back.
I had been waiting for this place to open for a while after seeing it so often on my way to the doctor's. They did not disappoint. Lunch omakase was 68 bucks and I got in and out within the hour. It really fits for lunch. The courses I had were quite unique and worth the price given the ingredients. I had chawanmushi with crab for an appetizer. There was then snapper, Sable fish, ootoro tuna, salmon, hotate, eel, squid, and a few others I forgot. They feature unique combinations with truffle, gold, caviar, and even cheese! And dessert was some mochi. Overall, it was a great experience and I hope to come back sometime.
Came here for a business meeting. Sushi is amazing and the spicy tuna was made to perfection. I love sushi and know when the sushi is just perfect and fresh. Highly recommended.
Just incredible restaurant with amazing and fresh fish. If you are going to grab some sashimi, sushi, rolls, without considering anything else then don’t doubt it - it’s the perfect place. Highly recommend
This omakase was thoughtful and well done. Everything made sense and flowed really nicely. We got to add on the wagyu tasting and it came with uni, salmon roe, and more. This was truly an expectational omakase, 15 pieces left me feeling full and satisfied. The chu toro and I think it was bass with chili was superb. Definitely would recommend!
Just wow. First time for Omakase. At 5pm I had the restaurant and chef to myself. Amazing chef's choice. Lots of fish sourced from Japan. I recommend it to my future self if I ever visit NYC again. Also probably the first restaurant I've visited in Manhattan with quiet noise levels and nice jazz on the soundtrack.
5.23.2023 When visiting New York City, one must indulge in the incredible Omakase experience. Personally, I have a deep appreciation for Japanese cuisine, particularly Omakase, where the chef takes the reins and decides what to serve. NYC offers a plethora of options when it comes to Omakase, each offering a unique experience based on the price point. In my opinion, they can be grouped into three tiers: essential ($60-150), middle ($180-250), and high-end ($300 and above). The disparity in service, ambiance, fish selection, and preparation is evident across these tiers. Depending on the occasion, budget, and expectations, I have had fantastic experiences exploring various Omakase restaurants in NYC. Recently, Shogun, a new establishment, opened its doors in midtown NYC. My friends Brooke Silvey, Savannah Bennett, and I had the opportunity to check out their soft opening dinner menu. We opted for Option A, a 15-course Omakase priced at $100. This experience included 2 appetizers, 10 pieces of nigiri, 1 Hokkaido uni rice dish, 1 hand roll, and a dessert. Due to underestimating the notorious New York traffic, we were running a bit late. However, the staff graciously accommodated us upon arrival. We had booked seats at the counter, which, in my opinion, is the best way to enjoy an Omakase experience. I relished being able to witness the chef in action, as I'm always captivated by the process. We started off with some sake, which was served in a sleek sake dispenser. Both appetizers were phenomenal—the abalone was tender, and the lobster tarts were bursting with flavors. The presentation of both appetizers was impeccable. The nigiri was incredibly fresh and delicious. Throughout the course of the Omakase, we enjoyed nigiri featuring scallop, kampachi, skipjack tuna, black cod with truffle, strapjack, king salmon, bluefin tuna, and otoro. The pacing was perfect, and we never felt rushed. The experience was more relaxed compared to higher-tier Omakase establishments, allowing us to engage in great conversations and share hearty laughter over delectable sushi. The Hokkaido uni rice was a delight, offering an incredible umami taste. I also thoroughly enjoyed the hand roll. Additionally, we were treated to a delightful waffle filled with tobiko. The Omakase experience ended on a high note with an exquisite ice cream sandwich. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone seeking a fun, relaxing, yet high-quality Omakase experience.
Chef Vincent is great! -December 2023 This is the spot I go to when I have a big party. Shogun is able to accommodate a big party because they have a large counter. We have had Chef Ryan a few times and he is great. He is funny and is very accommodating towards some of my party’s dietary restrictions. We feel so special. -July 2024
I recently had the pleasure of dining at this fantastic Omakase spot right by Grand Central, and let me tell you, it was an experience that was totally worth it. From the moment you step in, you’re greeted with an atmosphere that’s both intimate and inviting. First off, the fish. Majority of the fish is flown in directly from Japan, and you can absolutely taste the difference. Each piece of sushi practically melts in your mouth, with a freshness that’s unparalleled. The Hokkaido uni? Pure bliss. It's creamy, briny, and has that rich, oceanic flavor that uni lovers crave. And here’s the kicker: they offer a $10, 3-course wagyu add on option. Yes, you read that right. The wagyu was incredibly tender and flavorful, each bite was a celebration of perfectly marbled beef. For such a price in NYC, it's an absolute steal. Overall, if you’re looking for an exquisite omakase experience in the heart of NYC, this place near Grand Central is a must-visit.
Hands Down!! I got 19 courses Omakase here and it was on top, shoutout for the chef and team you guys did a great job. I enjoyed every single course and happy that I’ve tried them all. The food quality was amazing, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was wonderful. So this is all I want to say for Shogun Omakase!!
I truly cannot say enough amazing things about SHOGUN OMAKASE. We went for lunch today and the food, service, and prices were truly exceptional. Every piece of fish and each course was incredible. I highly recommend to anyone interested in an omakase experience. I will certainly be going back soon!
Overall a very good experience. The sushi was not the most traditional kind (extra ingredients like butter & cheese over salmon, no soy sauce was needed coz everything was seasoned by the chef, and I was given 0 wasabi), but very very good, carefully made with the best ingredients, definitely worth the price, especially given the soft opening deal. The only disappointing thing for me was the appetizers. We had 4 that came with the omakase B set. The steamed egg appetizer was a bit tasteless without the crab roe. With the crab roe it was just okay. I had a similar egg dish at Jungsik and that one was a umami bomb. The sauce on the abalone appetizer tasted exactly the same as the Kewpie Japanese salad dress I get from Costco, which in my opinion overpowered the natural sweetness of the abalone. The other two appetizers were also just mediocre. All in all, the sushi saved the day so I’d still recommend this place.
The staff were super great vibes, helpful, and great company as I was dining solo. It was a pleasure to meet each of them, especially Chef Kai who explained each delicious course as he made and presented it. I would recommend this omekase experience to anyone living or visiting NYC, and to sit at the counter.
Stumbled on this place on their second day open and immediately felt like a VIP upon entering. Service was incredible, and shoutout to my waitress for her sake suggestion, which was spot on! This place is a standout for omakase, with one of the most authentic experiences, and some of the most unique dishes, I've ever had. The highlights were the nigiri dishes, hands down, and their signature piece was one of the best pieces of sushi I've ever had the privilege of eating. If you like omakase, absolutely give Shogun Omakase a shot-- you will not be disappointed!
Truly enjoyed my first omakase experience. I got so lucky to have Yama-san to be my chef for the night. His skills were amazing and each nigiri was served with a smile and hospitality. I am sure there are omakases out there that deserve the highest praises but for me, I’ll hold this experience dear because each and every course I had were so heartwarming and I could see the integrity in Yama-san as a sushi chef. I came to this omakase alone but I did not feel as such because he made me feel welcomed. I did not think I would learn so much in an hour, while being served food. It was such a delightful experience. I hope to have him again next time I visit NYC.
Not even two months open and this is in my top spots to eat while in the city. It is a convenient two minute walk away from Grand Central Station and the service was very quick and helpful. When we arrived 5 minutes early for our 7pm reservation, we were greeted by multiple staff members and sat as soon as we arrived despite how busy it was. We ordered the omakase: set B, and since we do not drink alcohol, asked our server Seth for a recommendation for a non-alcoholic drink. He recommended the yuzu drink & we were delighted at how refreshing it was. We didn’t know that this is exactly what we wanted, plus it complimented our meal perfectly. Seth continued to impress as he presented each course with great detail while answering any questions we had. We also had the pleasure of speaking with our chef Steve who was very friendly and made each sushi dish with care. Every piece was so delicious, fresh, and beautifully displayed, my personal favorites being the uni and the scallop sushi. Out of the multiple omakase places I’ve been to in NY/NJ, this is by far the best. The welcoming atmosphere, attentiveness of the staff, and quality of the food made this a very wonderful and memorable experience. We will definitely be coming back again
Loved it! Every piece of the 15 course set was amazing, with high quality fish and an innovative blend of topping ingredients ranging from foie gras to truffle. Chef was friendly, explaining every dish, and the atmosphere is lovely.
I was visiting from OOT and saw the reviews and knew I had to check it out before leaving. I came in for a late dinner and ordered the Omakase B (19 piece) and sat at the bar. Vince was making my sushi and treated each piece like a work of art (which it was) and explained each piece. The atmosphere was a very peaceful one and the architecture was as well. My dinner was like a meditative experience. I’ll definitely come back when I return to NYC.
SHOGUN OMAKASE is a newly opened restaurant for Omakase recently. The decor is classic and elegant with authentic decor & cozy ambiance. Their service was a little panic but friendly since they just opened up. They serve 19-course for $150 and the portion was great so I couldn’t finish all easily. The ingredients were fresh with great quality and it’s overall decent with some surprises. Our favorites were the flavorful Miso Cod and Toro Caviar Sushi which melted in mouth immediately.
We came here to celebrate my partner’s birthday, as we’ve been to about 6 different omakase experiences in the past couple years and have loved the variety of each, this was no exception—but may i say how wonderful it was now? Atmosphere was clean and warm, with wood and stone features, plates, and interior. We were kindly able to move up our reservation from 5:00 to 4:40 as we had arrived in the city quite early. The staff was all wonderful and had made note from my reservation that it was a birthday celebration which is always SO appreciated, as i know it’s not always something spaces do or are even expected to. Service: so kind and attentive, everyone was very sweet to us and our chef seemed genuinely happy to talk about the selections for the day. Food: The best part, was immaculate. Truly a story telling of food that we enjoyed every single piece of. Variety, artistry, elegance and fresh. We went with the $150 19 course selection which came with 4 appetizers, 11 pieces of nigiri, 1 hand roll, a gorgeous wagyu sampler and dessert. (Forgive me if I missed anything, there was so much food and certainly worth the price) The appetizers were inventive and well presented, the sushi was classic and took us through this beautiful little adventure of light to deeper and rich flavors. Drinks: we got a bottle of cold sake which was served in a sort of wine chilling contraption that was not only a fun spectacle to look at and use, but very functional in keeping our alcohol chilled. Truly, truly a wonderful experience and would absolutely recommend. Thank you so much.
I recently visited a Japanese restaurant for an omakase dining experience and it was incredibly delightful. This was my first time trying omakase, and it far exceeded my expectations. The quality of the food was exceptional; each dish was a masterpiece of flavors, meticulously crafted and presented. The chef’s skill and attention to detail were evident in every bite, and the freshness of the ingredients really shone through. The atmosphere of the restaurant added to the overall experience, making it not just a meal, but a memorable journey through Japanese culinary artistry. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to immerse themselves in a genuine omakase experience. It’s not just about the food, but the story each dish tells, and the passion behind it. Truly a remarkable and unforgettable experience!
Everything here was AMAZING! The food was some of the best I’ve ever had, and the service was amazing. They even gave me free jelly and cheesecake because it was my birthday. Ask for Chef Ryan, because he was so nice to talk to, and made REALLY good omakase. They have gold leaflets, caviar, and uni with most meal packages, and for $10, you can add A5 Wagyu! Overall 10/10 experience.
What can I say? This was my first and the best Omakase experience I’ve ever had. Peter was our chef and he was just so sweet. Every selection of the experience was delicious and phenomenal. There was nothing I did not enjoy. The eel and king salmon were my favorite, wow. I will definitely try coming every month, hands down recommend!!! I’d also pay more for the wagyu experience and get the dispensing sake! Our host and server were also so so kind. The birthday dessert and sake to go home was SUCH A THOUGHTFUL IDEA. So impressed. Thank you everyone!
Very pleasant experience for a last-minute reservation. We are on a work holiday and finished our appointments early, so we made a last-minute decision to dine here. They were kind, attentive, and accommodating. We had the countertop omakase and enjoyed all the options. Fish was fresh and of good quality. We will be back. Ty
An out of this world Omakase experience. We took the 19 course. Which includes the A5 Wagyu. Amazing. Every single course was amazing. The perfect combination of flavors. The attention of the chef is superb. We had a very pleasant conversation with him. The dishes where all outstanding. With some of them that just melt in your mouth. The ambiance of the restaurant is so relaxing and pleasant. All by all a must go.
Shogun Omakase was my first omakase experience, and it was absolutely amazing! The fish was the best I’ve ever had, so fresh and flavorful. The staff was incredibly professional, taking the time to explain each dish, and the experience never felt rushed. After visiting another place, which left us disappointed, we’ll definitely be coming back to Shogun Omakase. It’s hands down the best omakase experience we’ve had! Highly recommend!
This place is easily one of the best omakase spots in Manhattan. From start to finish, everything about this experience was perfect, the food, the service, and the atmosphere. The fish was exceptionally fresh, with each piece melting in my mouth. You can tell they prioritize quality and authenticity, as every bite was well-balanced and beautifully presented. The rice was perfectly seasoned and had the right texture, complementing the fish without overpowering it. They also use just the right amount of wasabi, allowing the natural flavors of the fish to shine. Beyond the food, the service was top-tier. The chefs and staff were friendly, professional, and knowledgeable, making the experience even more enjoyable. They took the time to explain each course, ensuring that we appreciated every detail of the meal. Unlike some places that feel rushed, here we were able to savor each course at a perfect pace. The ambiance was also great, clean, comfortable, and inviting. It felt intimate without being cramped, creating the perfect setting for an authentic omakase experience. If you’re looking for a true, high-quality omakase in Manhattan, look no further. This place deserves all the recognition it gets. I will definitely be coming back, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves amazing sushi and a top-tier dining experience.
This has become one of my favorite places to get omakase. I went there to enjoy lunch and chef Ryan had made the experience extremely enjoyable. He was very kind and welcoming, along with every single staff member. They greeted with you with so much kindness and attentivness. I even dropped my chopsticks accidentally and chef Ryan noticed immediately and he asked his coworker to get me new ones before I could ask for it. Those small gestures are so noticeable and appreciated. Now for the food, all I can say is that every bite was innovating, fresh, delicious and uou can tell that every single ingredient was high quality and well balanced. I absolutely loved every bite and cannot say enough good things only I will be a regular. Thank you Shogun for an amazing meal.
Last night in NYC and we decided to continue our asian theme. Dinner at Shogun Omakase Manhattan was the perfect end to our short holiday. Coincidentally, we introduced our friends to Shogun show the night before. Anyways,we opted for Omakase A and added Wagu. Everything from 1st course to dessert was acceptionally selected by the chef, and every dish was just fantastic. Some fish used for nigiri we never heard before, and many came directly from Japan. Wagu was also delish. We originally ordered only one order to share and immediately placed another. I also decided to do sake tasting, and all prechosen options were different and so tasty, i really enjoyed it. My husband had japanese beer, and he got a bottle to go. The service was great, very attentive staff, explained every dish as it came out. Even dessert, matcha tiramisu, was so yummy. It's definitely a place to visit, and we will be back.
Food was very good! Multiple omakase levels at different prices. We came in late and they still seated us and the staff was very kind would go back! Large space for bigger groups as well
We were impressed with the food. The food was incredibly fresh. My partner had the Omakase experience, which included a variety of creative and delicious dishes. I ordered a sushi/nigiri combination platter, which was also very good. However, my partner's Omakase experience was even more exciting and delightful. He loved every single plate. The waitress explained every single one carefully. The price is fair and the service is good, so I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Perfectly curated Omakase experience steps away from Grand Central. From the moment you step in the door, there is a warm, welcoming feeling. There are four Omakase sets to choose from (which I love). I chose the 88 Omakase option. The entire selection of fish was delicious and said to be flown in fresh every day, therefore the menu can change depending on the fish selection. The wagu tasting add-on was a delightful addition which I would highly recommend (and only $10 - a steal!!). I left feeling fully satisfied and hope to come back soon to try another Omakase set.
I love Japanese food and think of omakase, a choreographed feast of 10-15 specially prepared morsels, as a rare treat. But it is Shogun's specialty and three of us tried their 12-course $68 version (there are bigger, more $ ones too) and loved every bite. It's very good value compared to what we pay for neighborhood, not so fresh Sushi Deluxe platters! The first course is a choice of appetizers, mostly hot ones like gyoza dumplings or shiu mai. Most of the other "courses" are perfect pieces of nigiri or fish sushi. One of our group doesn't like raw fish and instead had miso soup, delicious grilled eel over rice and a Wagyu beef sampler with three "tastes." However, the menu of cooked items is tiny! The wait person carefully explained the ingredients and combinations of delicacies like fish roe, foie gras pate, uni from sea urchin and even a tiny gold leaf. The natural wood and bamboo interior, quiet ambiance (avoid sitting next to party tables), large sake menu and welcoming service will transport you to Asia in no time.
I got of work early and since I was in the city I wanted to try an omakase experience. This certainly was an experience. From the moment I stepped in everyone was very welcoming and happy to have me. Both the maître d and chef were amicable and cheerful. I was quickly seated and offered two menus. Food and drinks. I ordered set B. They have a special promotion going on right now and with set B they upgraded me to set C, a superior set with a Wagyu tasting course. Immediately after I ordered the experience began. From the opening salad to my first bite of nigiri to my closing dessert everything was spectacular. I was truly happy I came here to enjoy a nice quiet and remarkable omakase experience. I look forward to when I can go back again.
This is one of the better Omakase places that we have eaten in. Seated immediately, and the waiter was attentive and brought us drinks. They chill and serve sake in an interesting way were you controlled the pour the device is keeping the drinks chilled. We did do the upgraded menu and every piece of fish came out super fresh and tender. The appetizers included a lobster soup which had a great amount of flavor. All the Omakase pieces were flavored just right with some accompaniment. The sushi chef on our side was very nice and interactive, which made the experience better. If you are looking for a good Omakase at a reasonable price this is a good place to choose. Highly recommend reservations.
Me and my Partner had come here for last year and this year’s Valentine’s Day. Food and service was phenomenal. I genuinely appreciate the attention to detail and accommodations the chef and staff took for my allergies. Would give a Michelin star if I could 🥹. Also the fatty Toro and eel are my favorite.
Great service and food for very reasonable price! We ordered the winter omakase special and left so full. Had a good selection of sakes to complement the variety of sushi which were freshly made. Definitely coming back!
We came to Shogun Omakase to celebrate my birthday. It’s not our first time having Omakase but this was certainly the best experience. Chef Nick took such amazing care of us with a carefully curated menu to suit our preferences and explained not only the source of the fish but also some of the tweaks he made to bring out the flavor profiles of each piece. Some pieces just melt in your mouth and all the flavors are very well balanced. I wish I had more pictures to share but we were so immersed in the conversations and the tasting that time just flew by. It was truly a top notch omakase experience. Thank you Shogun Omakase! You are truly a gem!
I opted for a 14 course with a Wagyu experience add-on. And I will most definitely say that it is a truly value for money kind of an experience. We had an expert chef with deft fingers. He seasoned each piece lovingly and perfectly with the right amount of soya sauce and wasabi along with all the individual ingredients. Making each piece a flavour bomb and truly unique. I would highly recommend this Omakase experience. And looking forward to trying it again!
We had a wonderful counter experience where our sushi chef, Roy, took the time to share a bit of background about each nigiri we were about to enjoy. He never rushed us, serving each piece thoughtfully and with care, allowing every flavor to truly shine. We actually got so excited trying to guess the ingredients—especially the cod—that we forgot to take a picture altogether. From appetizers to dessert, every bite was decadent and delicious. We will absolutely be back.
SHOGUN OMAKASE offers a refined and premium sushi experience in the heart of Manhattan. Their 15-course omakase is well-crafted and thoughtfully paced, starting with two appetizers, followed by eleven pieces of high-quality nigiri, a monaka, and a final dessert course. The optional Wagyu Tasting for an additional $10 is an exceptional value and adds even more depth to the meal. The chefs focus on tradition, technique, and the freshest seasonal ingredients. Every bite is prepared with precision from the comforting crab soup that opens the meal to the expertly handled seafood and wagyu selections. For anyone seeking an authentic and elevated Japanese dining experience, SHOGUN OMAKASE delivers beautifully.
full omakase course pictured. The oyster was delicious and was different to other omakase places. The rest of the medium course set was delicious as well and used high quality ingredients, but the combination of flavors was not new and exciting. I know there is something to be said in mastering the classics, they’ve done it well and it is dependable, but I’d love to see a bit more creativity. All in all atmosphere was fine, staff were lovely, food was good!
I had an amazing omakase experience here! Each course was rich in flavor and beautifully presented. From the perfectly seasoned rice to the fresh, full-bodied cuts of fish, everything tasted balanced and thoughtful. The chef was not only talented but also super friendly and engaging, making the whole dining experience feel personal and fun. It’s a spot where you don’t just enjoy great sushi, but also get to connect with the heart behind the counter. Highly recommend for both the food and the vibe!
NYC’s Most Beautiful Omakase — and yes, it tastes just as stunning as it looks. Every course is a masterpiece of flavor and presentation — from delicate slices of premium fish to perfectly balanced bites that melt in your mouth. One of the most refined sushi experiences in the city. 14 Course + Wagyu Tasting Add-on 1 App | 10 Nigiris | 1 Monaka | 1 Handroll | 1 Dessert Follow me @foodie.elite on IG and TikTok for more.
I was working near Grand Central Station and noticed the set menu display on their window. I went with the 19-course omakase which was $150 which was a deal for that many courses...4 appetizers, 12 pieces of nigiri a savory monaka...spicy tuna on a crisp wafer, an A5 wagyu tasting (for an extra $10) and finished with a dessert. The service was very attentive throughout. I didn't order alcohol and stuck with green tea so I can't vouch for the cocktails. The appetizers that stood out was the snow crab butter soup. It had chunks of crab in the soup. The other app was the oyster topped with salmon roe. I can taste the ocean of the raw oyster, it was so fresh. The nigiri course was fresh and artfully prepared by the master sushi chef. My favorites were the uni from Hokkaido and the ebi with uni on top which was creamy, rich and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. For dessert, I was served tiramisu. While I've read others received a matcha version, mine was a more traditional style in an individual cup. It wasn't especially "Japanese fusion," but it was still a tasty way to end the meal. I went on a Sunday for lunch and wasn't crowded at all. But I heard that weekdays they're pretty booked up. I suggest calling to make reservations. Overall, Shogun Omakase delivered on quality, service and value. I'd definitely return and recommend it to anyone looking for an omakase experience near Grand Central.
I had the $88 omakase and was thoroughly impressed. Every course—from the oyster to the beautifully prepared fish—was incredibly fresh and clearly top quality. The craftsmanship behind each piece really stood out. The staff were attentive and friendly which added to the overall experience. I also tried the house sake, which was well-balanced, and a fantastic value for the price. The atmosphere was relaxed. This spot delivers on both flavor and service, and I’ll definitely be returning. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a high-quality omakase under $100 range!
Amazing sushi with fresh and tasty ingredients, perfect execution and great options to choose from. I went with $100 11 course option and was so full after. I would probably be ok with the $88 option but really wanted the otoro. Chef and staff were absolutely fantastic. I went by myself for solo dining around 8:30 on Saturday night, seated right away and finish by 9:45. If there’s anything can be improved now to think about it, maybe change the tiramisu to ice cream for desert. But still would give a five star regardless.
Shogun Omakase is an elegant and inviting Japanese restaurant in Midtown Manhattan. The space has a beautiful wooden design that’s perfect for a relaxed night out. The staffs are super friendly and attentive making the whole experience feel personal without being too formal. The sushi is fresh and flavorful with generous portions that set it apart from other omakase spots where you leave hungry. Every course feels thoughtful and well paced. If you’re looking for omakase in a laidback but refined setting, Shogun is worth checking out.
I had a wonderful dining experience at this omakase restaurant. The service was incredibly attentive, both the servers and the chefs were warm and welcoming! The staff paid close attention to every detail, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable meal. The sushi chef was not only skilled but also very friendly, making the whole experience even more delightful. Highly recommended for anyone looking for authentic omakase with top-notch service!
Booked a lunch here for my birthday. We chose the 100$ for 15 courses and the 10$ wagyu tasting add on. I personally liked the amount of soy sauce/wasabi they used on the nigiris but my husband thought soy sauce could’ve been a little less but he still enjoyed it. The waiter and waitress were both very lovely and made our experience even better! We left very full and satisfied. They also gave me a birthday dessert and a can sake as a gift!
I came here for the 19-course omakase dinner to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Our reservations were originally for 7:45 PM, but they seated us early when we arrived at 7:12 PM. I love how this restaurant offers table seating for those who prefer more privacy instead of the counter. The table seating definitely allows for a more intimate experience while still enjoying everything the restaurant has to offer. The sushi was fresh and delicious, and I especially loved the A5 Wagyu, which just melted in my mouth. The dessert was just as amazing as the dinner, and they ended the night by providing a thoughtful birthday gift to the birthday celebrant, which was such a nice touch. On a non-food-related note, I want to mention that I visited the bathroom, and it was nice and clean, which I really appreciated after having such a great dinner. I don’t think there was anything I disliked about this place. Even the waitstaff was attentive, which made the experience all the more enjoyable.
Service was fabulous! Whenever you’re here, please go find Chef Ryan, he was really entertaining us the whole time and we were really able to connect with him like a family. He made sure we were aware of the sushi that was served so there was no allergies or anything. Also celebrated my friends birthday and they brought out a cake for us. I will definitely be returning next time! Thank you Chef Ryan!
good sushi in a peaceful space. they had few innovative pieces (king salmon with mozzarella which tasted just how it sounds, but also somehow worked), so while it was good i couldn’t say it was standout to me. the abalone starter was magnificent though, it has the consistency of clam and comes with a tangy garlic sauce. i’d say it’s worth a try if you’re interested but not a place i’d come back to over other omakases.
It is hard to say avoid this place but I would hesitate to recommend this place. Greetings were somewhat lukewarm, chefs sushi was not too bad but not the fantastic. $38 for 8 pcs of sushi is okay but I might be wrong expecting too much. Seems like they are focusing on Omakase customers. They keep cleaning the table as soon as we finished the dishes and it makes us uncomfortable because we felt they pushes us to leave out table asap. Also, the course order was weird. Not sure its name but they served us some sort of avocado with ikura salmon roe. I think that should come out as an appetizer, not the dessert. It was a perfect combination with sake! I wished have these 4 finger foods as an appetizer.
Good service, good food, great chef (Alvin) and relaxing atmosphere. Most of the crafted omakase were good with a few excellent and a few ok. Our chef Alvin was really good, friendly and fun, had a great time dining and chatting. Servers were generally good with some hit and misses here and there.
Good entry in the <$100 omakase category. If all you need is a cheaper sushi fix with a standard offering then this spot will likely fill the need. But it’s hard to stand out in this category as NYC is completely saturated with affordable options. My category leaders here are Korami and thirteen water. Shogun will search the itch and still better than the recent surge of AYCE spots which are generally terrible. Verdict: would return to satisfy a craving on short notice assuming I can’t find a resy anywhere else.
New Omakase place near grand central, they are still doing opening specials, the Omakase lunch is $68 including one app, 9 nigiri, one hand roll and a dessert. I honestly didn’t enjoy that much, the snow crab soup appetizer is basically a starch soup with two claws, flavor is good but soup was a bit basic. The first nigiri was scallops and the sushi rice didn’t pack well it fell apart when I picked it up. The hand roll was on a rice cracker bowl instead of a seaweed hand roll. All the nigiri are overly soysauced. I saw the chef apply soy sauce at least twice with a large amount. Apart from the soy sauce there was not much other topping that enhance the flavor of each piece. The service was good. At the beginning was a bit slow, waiting for the chef to cut all the fishes before serving us. It was like a 10mins wait just watching him cut all the fishes. There are not many premium pieces at the lunch Omakase, no otoro, no uni, no spotted shrimp no wagyu. I had better at other places at the same price. The space is big, if you want the Omakase experience, still recommend to get counter seats. The AC was not working the day we visited at a 90F weather, was a bit warm and stuffy.
I had been eager to try this place after reading the reviews, especially the omakase box to-go, which is on the pricier side at $68. Finally, I made a reservation with a friend for her birthday, and they kindly gifted her a can of sake, which was a nice touch. Unfortunately, the experience was underwhelming and a bit of a letdown. It felt like they were trying too hard, focusing more on elaborate toppings than on the quality of the fish itself. The toppings didn't complement the fish well, and the combination felt forced, detracting from the overall authenticity of the meal. I wasn't surprised to learn that the restaurant is Chinese/Taiwanese-owned rather than Japanese. We opted for the $150 omakase set B, which includes 19 courses--four appetizers, 11 pieces of nigiri, uni rice, a wagyu tasting, a hand roll, and dessert. The crab and lobster appetizers seemed frozen, and the lobster was overcooked and tough. The oyster appetizer, loaded with fish eggs, cucumber, and way too much mayonnaise, was overwhelming and unbalanced. The wagyu tasting was fine, though the chef recommended pairing it with cucumber to balance the flavors, alongside some strawberries. I didn't really get the idea behind that pairing--it felt unnecessary. The wagyu would have been fine on its own with foie gras, fish roe, and uni, without the added distractions. The nigiri pieces were decent, but none of them stood out as particularly memorable. At this price point, the meal is certainly a good value, but I wouldn't return. It seems they tried to be innovative with the flavors and combinations, but in doing so, they sacrificed authenticity and the natural taste of the fish. It felt overdone.
While the restaurant is fairly attractive and servers were pleasant, the dining experience is absolutely without finesse and sophistication. Sushi was not beautifully made, fish was mushy and was not particularly flavorful most of the time (the king salmon was actually the only exception). From the very start, the meal disappointed. The appetizer of crab soup was strange and viscous (thickened with cornstarch?) with a massive amount of odd tasting garlic (jarred/preminced?). This dish was much more like a mediocre dish from Chinatown and not Japanese at all. Even the dishes throughout were clearly Chinese versions, not the interesting dishes one often sees in high-end Japanese restaurants. This was a disappointing meal that should have been priced at $40-50, not $100+.
Typical take-out quality sushi ran by non-japanese but asking for premium price let down. This is my second time here since i thought the omakase i had last time was acceptable at this price point. I ordered sushi and sashimi deluxe which is similar price to omakase price( i didn't want desert and app that they include with omakase) --- it was NOT premium sushi. Comes with only store bought quality second tier salmon, tuna, yellow tail 4 each and they called it a deluxe -- the iron taste in the raw fish confirms they are low quality.
A very disappointing experience. Service for lovely and workers were sweet. however—- for this price point, I expected a certain high-quality fish that is at least mid tier. The fish today was much less fresh from similar price point options, and even lower than lower price point options in the city. Props to service + lovely atmosphere, but not worth the while. There are so many good omakase options in the city these days. You can pass on this one.
I visited this restaurant for an omakase experience on Thanksgiving night and was deeply disappointed. The quality of the food was significantly below expectations, especially considering the high price. I was charged $100 for a meal that seemed worth only about $35. 1. The sea urchin served was notably past its prime, emitting an unpleasant odor and tasted disgusting. 2. The inclusion of truffle oil in a $100 omakase was unexpected and did not align with the overall quality of the meal. 3. The fish seemed to be of average supermarket quality, similar to what you might find in a $15 sushi roll. 4. For dessert, they served a dried-out sponge cake and whipped cream with cookies, which was underwhelming. Additionally, when I attempted to express my concerns to the manager, they sent a poor waitress instead of addressing the issue personally. This experience was unsatisfactory and did not meet the standards one would expect for the price.
