Opinions de Sushi Dairo New York
Highly recommended. The sushi was fresh and delicious, and the chefs and servers were very friendly. I liked that it can be enjoyed with your hands and without soy sauce, which really lets the flavors shine. The miso soup and ice cream were also good. I usually do not pay much attention to these since they are often too salty or overly sweet in NYC, but here everything was well balanced and suited my taste. I also appreciated that there was no loud music, making it easy to talk and enjoy the meal. Everything felt simple and well done, which I appreciated. Given the price point, a bit more attention to design, especially in the bathroom, could be a nice touch, but overall it was a wonderful experience with an authentic Japanese sushi vibe.
A Hidden Gem That Treats You Like Family. If you’re looking for budget-friendly omakase in NYC that doesn’t compromise on quality or care, this is the place. I’ve been coming here for a while now, and it’s more than just the fish that keeps me coming back—it’s the people. The fish is always fresh. You won’t find gimmicks or over-the-top theatrics here—just honest, skillful sushi that hits all the right notes. It’s the kind of place where the chef might hand you a piece and say, “This one’s just how you like it”—and it always is. My little sushi sanctuary.Thank you!
First time I've done Omakase, and other people in my party told me this was a really good omakase place around here. I don't have a reference point to compare to, but this was nevertheless really good. I like sushi in general, so it's easy to please me with sushi haha but this was very good. One thing I noticed was the uni here didn't taste yucky haha I've had uni in the past but they tended to be a little yucky. I'm told I probably had California uni those times lol but the uni here is from Japan, so I'm told :)
What an awesome find! I came with my best friend for my bday and everything was so amazing! We had the omakase dinner and got a little full at the end and couldn’t finish the delicious ice cream! Maybe the next time I’ll do 11 pcs and order some appetizers. The chefs are masters and the rice was perfectly mixed with the sauce and vinegar. Definitely will come back.
Had my post birthday treat from a good friend today and it was a great experience . The omakase was phenomenal , giving it a 5 star. Having been to some omakase in nyc, more pricey than here but the omakase was way better. The service was great too. Didn't get the chance to take good photos though, too busy with my food . lol
Wow! What to say. I came here for my birthday and had the best experience. The staff is awesome, the vibes are great and the food is beyond phenomenal. My atoms are changed forever. Lifetime fan born! It's a place that is built from 40 years of experience and it shows. We will be back! Total gem. Thanks so much Omakase Sushi Dairo!
My husbands favorite lunch spot around work. I finally got the invite and boy did it deliver. A small sushi counter with a few tables and two lovely men running the lunch crowd. I opted for the lunch combo menu and went with the spicy tuna roll (🤤) and the yellowtail roll, and then four pieces of nigiri that the chef chose. I also added an Uni roll because it was super fresh - so glad that I did. This spot is such a gem. Amazing sushi and service.
We had the smaller portion Omakase which came with 12 pieces and a miso soup. The quality was really good. I enjoyed every piece except the anchovy, which I don't like or dislike. Also, there were no shrimp or fish roe pieces. I would've gladly traded the mackerel and the anchovy for them. Using the leaf as a plate was an interesting touch, however, I prefer a real plate but only because the leaf made it harder for me to take pictures of the pieces. The space is quite intimate and there are tables behind the bar. The place got quite loud when the table behind us became occupied. Overall it was a nice experience. I'd recommend it.
Worth every penny! The omakase menu is far from affordable, but the experience and quality of food exceeds all expectations. The chefs are friendly and share interesting descriptions / explanations of the sushi they serve. For dessert, I’d recommend the sesame ice cream over the matcha one, as the matcha one was the only thing we did not enjoy on the menu. Great spot for any sushi lover!
Super friendly and accommodating service for myself and my 3 year old son. The fish was delicious, but I’m giving 4 stars for lack of value. Sushi pieces are small (1/2 the size compared to Yama around the corner) yet are similarly priced. The drink menu does not list any sake by the glass, but the house offering I was given after asking was $18 a glass. Again, they were extremely friendly and the fish was fresh, but the price tag leaves a little to be desired. I would imagine the omakase option likely offers better value
Owner-chef ran sushi shop, personally, I think those are the best places. Overall, I think the $75 menu is very good value compared to other sushi-ya in the city at similar price points. The quality of fish and the shari(vinegared rice) is better, and hence provide better value. The $140 menu, however, is very close in pricing to a few other options in the city that has better ambience, service, and overall quality. So the $75 menu is with add-ons are probably the sweet spot for DAIRO, IMHO.
We went out for Valentine's Day last night. Omakase Sushi Dairo lost our reservation, which we showed them we had confirmed. It was no big deal because they found space for us and we had a good dinner. However, less than 90 minutes after we arrived, as we paid the bill and were finishing our waters, the hostess started to RUSH us out the door to sit the next guests. She may have been new, so maybe she didn't know that it's super inappropriate to hurry people out from a nice restaurant, especially when we tipped well and were friendly/respectful guests. There was no "time limit" like some cheaper places have. Not only were the couple who came in after us not even ready to be seated, but there were plenty of open seats. Just move your post-it notes around. If you guys want the benefit of being able to seat more diners despite screwing up the reservation, then please don't rush your guests out the door. Looking back, it would've been better if they just told us, "sorry, we messed up the reservation, we can't sit you." Finally, the quality of food was excellent but there are other local omakases of comparable value that aren't so pricy.
I was excited to try a new omakase place in the area and I had a friend in town who also enjoys omakase, however the experience was just mediocre. I really enjoy small plates as part of the omakase experience but some of the flavor combinations missed the mark for me. The fish itself was good and fresh so I think next time I would just go a la cart and order the sushi platters.
You come here for the food and that’s it. It’s a very intimate space. Probably room for 12-15 at the counter and a few tables for maybe I’m guessing 12 other diners. Small. There’s no way to avoid eye contact with the chefs which is kind of cool. I would say the sushi is average and not particularly creative. Not sure if the omikase is more creative. I snuck a brief peek and think perhaps it may be (more creative) but uncertain. The otoro bluefin tuna had an unusual texture different from what I’ve had before…see picture. It didn’t seem to be as buttery as fatty tuna I’ve had at other sushi houses. I missed that. The Japanese uni wasn’t as fresh TASTING as I’m accustomed to. Usually you have that sense of tasting the ocean and sweetness… and the richness fills your mouth with that delightful sensation. This was missing in mine although the portion was generous. The menu has a variety of fish I had never heard of before. I tried the pricey seared nodoguro. It is like the Dover sole of sushi…very rare to find this fish and bring to market per Google. Honestly, aside from the grill flavor, it wasn’t particularly a “WOW”. Very friendly staff but my empty water glass was overlooked multiple times. They serve the sushi on a banana leaf on the counter. Nice in theory but my pieces toppled on the uneven leaf. Some of the uni fell off the sushi rice.
The worst Omakase I’ve ever had in my life. We went with the sushi dinner set for $160. The first course was miso soup, which I usually love, but this one was about three times saltier. The first appetizer tasted like canned tuna cat food. The sashimi was objectively mid one after the other. The best part was the uni, the uni was incredible. The hand roll was disappointing. The green tea ice cream was great, and I doubt they made that in house. there are so many good Omakase places in the city and I really regret coming to this one.
