Opinions de Tandoor Oven New York
I had a wonderful experience with a group of friends at Tandoor Oven tonight! They were very accommodating of the size of our group (nine people). The ambiance of the restaurant is lovely, with quiet music and candlelit tables. The waitstaff were helpful, efficient, and very attentive. We never felt rushed, but were able to relax and enjoy our meal. All of the food was delicious - we ordered samosas, tandoori vegetables, and naan to share. The naan was light and crisp on the bottom; the garlic variety was our favorite. I ordered lamb biryani for my main course. Delicious! Everyone else were very happy with their orders as well, and it was all very well-priced. Will definitely be back.
Excellent food, service and atmosphere
I went here with my meetup group. We loved the food and service! I am vegan and I was able to find delicious dishes. They also gave us each separate checks-so wonderful. We will be back!
Beyond the authentic very good food, the worm welcome, the impeccable service, his willingness not to let us walk home hungry...5 minutes before closing, cooking for us himself, since the cook had left home.. where can you get that kind of attention today? It's a great authentic restaurant with empathy not to be found in NYC.
I love this place. Small. Lush decor. Cozy atmosphere. Always the same super friendly staff. Sooo affordable for literally the most amazing homey Indian comfort food. Big menu. Main courses come out in cute hammered copper pots. Complementary starter and a little dessert. Go, you will love it.
I visited Tandoor Oven several weeks ago and I haven't forgotten about it. In a place like New York, full of phenomenal kitchens and small, cozy venues, this is a place that must not be overlooked, especially if you are looking for Indian/Pakistani/Nepalese delights. The restaurant and seating area is all on one floor, the first dining area separated by a wall and a thin hall leading into the other dining space. I dined with a friend and we ordered the Kashmiri Rogan Josh and the Chicken Sula Tikka, respectively, with sides of naan bread and a dish of three sauces, and long grain jasmine rice. The portions were perfect and everything was absolutely delicious; fragrant, juicy, spiced to perfection, and made to pair and share. After our meal, we had drinks from the bar, which is the same counter you are greeted and seated from. The maitre d', Prakash, invented a cocktail for me and it was wonderful. During this evening, the staff whom I noticed was composed of no more than four or five persons, but they were efficient and very courteous. The dining experience was enhanced by their professionalism. I also appreciated how Tandoor Oven caters to DoorDash and other delivery services, so the restaurant can reach you at home or on a work break. Though the restaurant is small, I do feel strongly that if delivery people with bikes can get into the foyer, then accessibility for any persons with specific needs can be arranged without hesitation. Enjoy your next occasion here! Many thanks to Prakash and the staff at Tandoor Oven.
Dined in for a late lunch on a Friday. Absolutely delicious food.
We had a small family gathering and everything was done so professionally. The owner and staff were amazing to coordinate with and the everyone enjoyed the food. Highly recommend.
Such amazing food and service!
Great food and atmosphere. Awesome staff.
They were wonderfully friendly and accommodating. Food was good. At the end we had a warm conversation, which ended only because a family who hadn't seen them since they left the country to go to France had come to not only say hi, but have their daughter give them a present and a big hug. That cemented for me how amazing they were. Our food was delicious and they brought us this porridge like dish on the house near the end that was also good. I enjoyed my experience here immensely.
Updating my original 5-star recipe to add this description. Honestly, 5-stars doesn't do this place justice. We order from here a couple times a month and it's so consistently amazing. Korma, masala roast chicken, and all the other sauces are so flavorful and the meat is always very juicy and tender. Usually we order takeout but we've also sat down multiple times and the service is so thoughtful and kind. I can't recommend this place enough if you're looking for a new restaurant in your local rotation
First visited this restaurant last night. Food and atmosphere were both outstanding. My friend had a spinach and cheese entree (forget the name) which he enjoyed. I had chicken tikka masala, which can be bland in New York restaurants. The owner asked how we liked the food and I said it was delicious and a bit spicy. He said, in the future I could ask the spiciness to be adjusted — but I wouldn’t change it. Prices and portion size were very reasonable. Definitely will return.
I come here quite often with my cousin who lives across the street and we always enjoy our meals. The new owner is revamping the menu to create new and exciting dishes.( I had ground lamb with an egg on it the other night and the spices were just right and exciting). It is a very comfortable, welcome and sophisticated atmosphere. We have never been rushed- We have been there for lunch and dinner- and have always found the service friendly and efficient- and the meals outstanding.
Our team had our office holiday dinner here for 11 people and it was wonderful. The service was excellent. Highly recommend for your intimate gatherings.
Absolutely excellent on all fronts. The servers are unbelievably kind and good - the food is great and the prices are basically perfect for a quality casual sit-down in the UES. Anything paneer and the bottles of wine are great.
amazing. Aside from the food (which, was delish!) I could not have asked more form the staff. I brought up a group of students for a field trip after the Met and the staff ensured we had a great array of dishes at an affordable price, and threw in dessert on the house. They were warm and inviting and personable and we had a great time. I will be back!
My grandparents and I used to come here all the time when I was a kid, visiting from out of town. I hadn’t been in years and was so excited to go with my own family now. While the decor has changed, many of the servers are the same, and the food… SO GOOD. The lamb biriyani was so flavorful, the dal makhani DELICIOUS. What a delicious and nostalgic meal.
The chicken malasala is the best on the upper East side.
Loved the lamb Kofta - will be coming back for more
Highly recommend this neighborhood gem on the Upper East Side. Excellent food with rich flavors and a variety of both vegetarian and meat options. The atmosphere is both elegant and cozy, and the service is warm and friendly. We the Samosa, Palak Paneer, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Goat Curry. All of the food we ordered was delicious and plentiful, topped off with the delectably crispy garlic Naan. Delicious!
Since moving to the UES, this has quickly become a go-to spot. Quality, unpretentious and delectable Indian cuisine coupled with attentive and charming service. Best Korma I’ve had in a long time!
Great place!! The food is delicious, the sauces and naan are so yummy. The portions aren’t huge but since we also got apps to share, we were set. The ambiance is relaxing and upscale, and the prices are great for all that you’re getting!
Grab a reservation if you're in the area. We just happened to get lucky and stroll in a few minutes before they got a cancelation. The food is good, but the service is OUTSTANDING! I'm not sure I've ever been waited on so attentively or courteously. The atmosphere is warm and quiet as well. Definitely worth a visit!
Food was amazing, a bit overpriced but still delicious and fresh
Fantastic service and flavorful food.
One of the best restaurants in New York City This is gonna be my one of the most favorite ones from now for sure. I loved the ambiance and the quality of food. Great service and tasty dishes. Specially the biryani is a must try at this place 👌🏻😋. I am a food explorer and I can surely say that this is the best Indian restaurant in uptown and particularly in that neighborhood.
I discovered this Indian Restaurant by Accident & what a hidden treasure. The food is Excellent. The Restaurant is welcoming, quiet, comfortable, the Service is Superb. They make you feel like a friend who’s dining in their home. Haven’t been there in a while due to health issues & am excited to be dining there soon & sharing this treasure with a friend.
I was walking by to go to another restaurant but was attracted by the heavenly aroma. I’m so glad I stopped in! I was seated immediately. Great service and amazing food! I had the Lamb Rogan Josh, Chicken Tikka Masala, Garlic Naan, and Gulab Jamun. I’ll be back!
My wife and I have been going to this restaurant for over four years. There are six Indian restaurants closer but we pass them all up! The food is incredible and the service is second to none. Anyone who has a problem with the food or the service either didn't read the menu (yes, shocking as it may be...some Indian dishes are spicy!) or they will never be satisfied. Open up just a bit and you will see the warmest servers who will go far out of their way to ensure you have a great meal. While I have never seen the staff try to pull a "fast one" I have seen them bend over backwards to deal with difficult customers with complete grace. If you like flavorful food and a respectful, personable, and welcoming staff...this is the place for you.
The inside has tapestries all around the walls and ceiling, which makes it cozy. The employees were perhaps the nicest Indian people we've ever met, and they asked us if we were comfortable and to ask any questions if we had them. The food was great, and they gave us complementary homemade mango and pistachio ice cream after dinner. Our server even waved us off!
Came here for dinner tonight . Great neighborhood spot. Delicious food, great service , good ambiance. The meal was amazing from appetizers to main course . Oh and it has a full bar !! The Indian beers are excellent
My experience in this restaurant was amazing. From availing their great service to trying the food. I went to this restaurant as it had good reviews and great interior. I took my Cuban friend with me who hasn't tried Indian food that much. We ordered samosa, paneer tikka, cheese naan and chicken biryani. Everything tasted good. But their hyderabadi chicken dum biryani is something. It is little spicy but it's outstanding. I have tried many places looking for perfect biryani. This restaurant finally fulfilled my long time craving for a good chicken biryani. Besides food they provide amazing service. I am glad I took my friend to this restaurant. If you stop by try the biryani, would highly recommend.
When we first moved to New York and started exploring the city, we would sometimes come upon Tandoor Oven in the Upper East Side. My wife would tell us the stories of how she and her mom would eat there frequently. After class, she would pick her mom up from the office and they would have dinner here. She would always order the chicken korma, and her mom the tandoori chicken. She would always say this is the best tandoori chicken ever, and that she always judges every tandoori chicken everywhere against it. I personally have always been skeptical, especially since I've never liked it anywhere we eat. It's always dry, usually bland and often charred. But she insisted it's really good. So when we finally had a chance to visit Tandoor Oven for mother's day we ordered it, alongside some palak paneer and lamb korma. I am NOT kidding when I say this is the BEST tandoori chicken I've had in my entire life. It's so good, I've reconsidered my whole stance on tandoori chicken, and am EMBARRASSED for all the other restaurants that serve it poorly. Shame on you, guys. We had the leftovers for dinner the next day and it was still really really good. Still juicy and tender, still flavorful. Whenever we're looking for this dish, Tandoor Oven is the only place that will suffice.
I've been here a few times, and the food is consistently delicious. The service is attentive, and the prices are relatively affordable. Definite recommend.
Really good Indian food! Service was great, the atmosphere was nice, and a good sign was the bathroom was clean. You can usually tell if the bathrooms are clean and put together so is the back of the house. If I was local I would definitely return!
Fantastic service and great food. The malai kofta is really nice.
My friend and I ate here and I must say, this was extremely good. I had a Lamb Curry and my friend had a Chicken Ticka Massala. The food was very delectable and the service was amazing as well. Prices are reasonable, especially for the portion size. I will definitely be coming back here.
The host was super attentive, and food was so good!
Great for solo diners! Excellent service, vibe and delicious food.
Great food. My daughter has celiac, and they were happy to accommodate.
Look no further for Indian food in UES! Great food and great service 🔥
This was a great little gem we found on our travels, after a long day at the MET and Central Park this was a cozy warm inviting dinning experience. The food was amazing!!! Highly recommend 🙌🏻
Awesome food, great service, kewl venue. Thanks guys.
Very comfortable and elegant environment with surprisingly economic price. The food is very tasty and served in good portion. Besides, it has very enjoyable Indian style house music collection.
Best Chana Saag I’ve ever had in my life. Incredible
Inarguably one of the best food and service and atmosphere I've experienced. Outstanding food presentation along with a brilliant selection of Indian favorites. This is the place to go for an outstanding culinary experience in the many selections of food and drink celebrating the traditional cuisines and fascinating spices of the many parts of the Indian Continent.
Got the masala roast chicken to go. It was very flavorful.
My first stop in NYC every time! The best food!
We had a great time tonight at tandoor oven - everything we ate was impeccable.
Very friendly. Very willing to fill your glasses full of water or whatever you may be having. Their food was to die for. Me and my gf and her best friend got all different appetizers and entrees. They were phenomenal. The flavor was spicy but bearably spicy but full of flavor. I would recommend this place to anyone. Get anything on the menu and you won’t regret it. Definitely 5 out of 5 stars for everything. Everyone should come here.
The food was amazing! We also had the lamb biryani ! Naan was awesome too. Thank you all for making our NYC experience even more amazing. I would have posted photos.. but I ate it instead.
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Tandoor Oven, and it was an absolute delight from start to finish. The ambiance was warm and inviting. The service was impeccable, with attentive staff who were happy to provide recommendations and ensure a seamless dining experience. If you're a fan of authentic, flavorful Indian cuisine, this restaurant is an absolute must-visit. I can't wait to return and explore more of their tantalizing menu! Sorry I was not able to get pictures.
Waiter is very friendly and professional, nice atmosphere and tasty food, good prices. Recommended.
Outstanding food and such kind staff. We eat here every time we're in the city.
Nice staff. I got the Tikka Masala, was really good
We had a significant wait here, but the staff were friendly. The pros were the atmosphere, friendly staff, and heating. The food was good, but I felt the chai tea was a bit unspectacular. The chickpea bread (don't remember the name) was delicious. It's worth a stop, but there are other places I prefer.
This restaurant is amazing. The vibes are great and the food is so delicious. I highly recommend it!
The chicken saag was absolutely life-changing, healthy and non-greasy but still so flavorful. This is my favorite indian food in the whole city. I do wish they had pani puri though!
Tandoor Oven is a true neighborhood secret on the Upper East Side. The ambience is wonderfully quaint and intimate. The food is exceptional. The chicken tikka masala is perfectly spiced with tender, melt-in-your-mouth chicken. I’ve also tried the eggplant dish, which is very spicy but has incredible, complex flavors that make it worth the spice. What really sets this place apart is the service. The staff is friendly, attentive, and remarkably fast, even during busy times. Outstanding food, welcoming atmosphere, and top-notch service—Tandoor Oven is an excellent choice.
My requirements for a restaurant are quite simple. I want good food and friendly, attentive service. Tandoor Oven hits both those requirements. We've gone there a few times and will go in the future.
I love this place. The food is delicious and not crowded at all. So, I am able to peacefully enjoy my meals.
Had a quiet dinner on a slow Friday night. Servers were very friendly and happy to describe dishes in detail to us. Lamb with cashew sauce was delicious and vegetable biryani was great although spicier than our wimpy taste expected. We’ll be back sometime I’m sure.
Go to this restaurant. It is absolutely amazing and I would recommend it to anyone who is even vaguely hungry. Go in, grab a seat, and get ready to have some of the best Indian food in your entire life. This food is to die for, the service is more than excellent and better than some restaurants at even double the price point. Food is on point Every. Single. Time.
I got takeaway from this place and ordered the chicken tikka masala, samosa, naan with zaatar and Gruyère cheese… oh my goodness IT’S AMAZING!!! I’m always trying to find a good Indian take out and hate taking risks to be disappointed. I was certainly not with Tandoor Oven. The chicken tikka is fresh and succulent, not rubbery, and feels like good quality meat and ingredients. It’s spiced to perfection, I don’t like when it’s too creamy, but the ratio of cream to curry is on point and the flavor is just perfect. It’s exactly what you’re looking for when you’re craving chicken tikka masala. I’ve been eating Indian food all my life and I have to say this place is top 5 for me at least. I’m so impressed and can’t wait to try more of their food! If you’re contemplating where to order on the upper east side, look no further.
Tandoor Oven serves up quality Indian food, with a calming atmosphere and incredible service. The samosas were perfectly crispy and flavorful, a great app to start with. The Chicken Sula Tikka was tender and well seasoned. I’d recommend it. Do not skip the Mango Lassi! This sweet, yogurty drink complemented the meal so nicely and was pure bliss. The Chicken Tikka Masala and Yellow Daal Tadka paired nicely with the naan — they make a cheese naan, with Gruyère cheese baked into it. It’s a nice twist to naan that’s worth trying. The garlic naan was great as always. Overall, I had a wonderful experience and recommend it for lovers of Indian cuisine! Takeout options available.
A friend and I had originally intended to dine at a nearby restaurant only to find an enormous wait time, and we decided to see what else what nearby. I'm so glad we did. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the interior is warm and cozy, with decorative carpets floor to ceiling and candlelit tables. The food was quite good and appropriately priced. The service was absolutely amazing; our waiter took excellent care of us without "hovering", and made us feel very welcome and important--something many waitstaff do not know how to do. Again I'm very pleased with my experience at this restaurant and will definitely add it to my list of go-to favorites.
Food was delicious. The service was great, everyone was very kind.
A quiet dining experience, very attentive and friendly staff, and a small but varied menu. Will try another time.
Extremely over priced for small portions. Vegetable Pakora was very dry. I ordered medium spicyMurgh Makhani and I'm pretty sure it was mild. Mulligatawny was delicious but it was very watery. First time having it so I don't know if that was the right consistency but it was delicious.
One of the waiters was really angry when we requested an alternative table, he was quite agitated the whole time, made us want to leave but stayed as we were too tired. The food was good but we requested hot water for over 5 times to actually get It.
Felt a little unwelcoming, mindful tip to host that frustration can be seen by costumers. A smile goes a long way :) For a places named tandoori oven the tandoori chicken was DRY and practically left untouched. The desserts were poorly portioned and didn’t taste like authentic Indian desserts. The gang left unsatisfied with everything other than the samosas.
I’ve been going here for years and love the food. However, the short/older waiter never fails to make me or my friends feel unwelcome. He always looks at us and taps his watch the second we get the food (even if the restaurant is empty). He also regularly tells us certain foods are sold out, but when I ask another waiter, they say they do have it. I find myself choosing other restaurants when I know he’ll be on shift, I wish it didn’t have to be that way.
I have been to this place, quite a few times with my friends. Mostly the food is good that’s why 1 star, but the last time I was there, I ordered paneer chilly which is around 10$ and I got just 4 pieces and horrible taste. I was very very disappointed but this was not it, while leaving the server asked to give him more tip. On this my friends complained and told him about the food not being upto the mark taste and quantity wise. So, on that he got very upset, he started arguing and the end shouted and said don’t ever come back. This made us very very embarrassed. Obviously will never go, but would not even recommend.
Food and ambience is great - but they will add on fees if you make any changes and not tell you before they bring you check. When we brought it up to the waiter they were adamant they told us before (disagree, since none of us three dining heard them say anything about that), indicated they would remove (“I won’t take your money for it”) and charged us anyway. Plenty of other restaurants in the area that don’t resort to surprise fees. Shame because food was good.
