We rang ahead because this venue is listed in pubstops for Campervans, the owner was very polite and assured us of space to park for the night and a table to eat later, we found the place no problem and got settled in, tipped our hat to the owner to say we had arrived and confirmed our table, we walked the dog then headed in for our meal, the service was fantastic, friendly faces and all the current Covid-19 restrictions and rules were set out and adhered to, the layout inside is welcoming and warm and the food is nothing short of excellent and cooked to perfection, and on top of that very reasonably priced, we would definitely come here again if passing and we enjoyed a very quiet and relaxing night afterwards.
Great value on a Friday evening, £15 for fish & chips + a pint. The food was perfectly cooked and well presented. Because we were a largish party (9 peeps) we were put in the dining room which lacked atmosphere as we were the only ones in there. There were some big tables in the main pub but they wouldn’t have seated all of us. The bar is we coming and the pub setting is great, surrounded by lovely countryside.
Just a quiet couple of pints with a mate I hadn’t seen for a while. Nice atmosphere, very welcoming. Food looked great although we didn’t eat. Will probably go back shortly with my son who works locally…
A special mention to thank our wonderful server Amber. We had a lovely meal here. A perfect refreshment stop halfway through our Kennet & Avon canal walk from Newbury last Sunday. The food was delicious and perfectly cooked. The atmosphere is welcoming and portions are generous. We had a roast, friends said the fish and chips were the best they had ever tasted. Allergies catered for. All in all perfect.
We ‘hired’ the private rooms at The Red House for the celebration of my father’s life, followed by a hot buffet. Aimee, the Events Manager, was wonderful throughout, the rooms were lovely and provided an ideal setting for our family gathering of 20, with capacity for more. The Red House is a step above your average pub and has a nice country setting. Highly recommended.
Lovely place with really friendly and attentive staff. Food was reasonably priced and served piping hot / fresh.
A lovely spacious pub 🍻 in the middle of country lanes. Nice atmosphere and the staff were really friendly and helpful 😁 I had a nice half pint and tried the vegan fish and chips, which was surprisingly tasty, it certainly was filling and the sorbet was a nice desert. Access ♿ was good and the staff very accommodating. I'd certainly pop in again if I were stopping in the area. Thanks for hosting me 👍💪
Went out for a Sunday walk with a friend and we crossed by this pub and we said to give a try and we were right the place is amazing and the food is really good. We had few drinks and home made burger that was yummy. I would go back again btw the staff is really kind and hard working. Cheers to them 🍻🍻
A wonderful get together with close friends. We had drinks 🍺 outside and then ate in the bar. Wonderful service, friendly staff, nothing too much trouble and absolutely stunning food. The lamb shank cooked to perfection and the halibut chosen by my wife and two friends… mouth watering. COVID adhérence 👍. Top recommendation…. Back again next week for lunch and a canal walk. PS Wonderful lunch this week 👏👏👏👏👏
Glad we have returned to area and one of favourite restaurants. As always great food and brilliant service.
What a fantastic find! Friendly staff, lovely surroundings, fantastic food, local beer. Ticks all the boxes! Very highly recommended!
This was our first visit to the Red House, it was so refreshing to go to a traditional pub and feel as if we were important to them. We hadn't booked for Sunday lunch but they managed to fit us in, our dogs were welcome, everyone was friendly and they couldn't do enough for us. The food was beautiful with attention to flavours and presentation, the cost was very reasonable. In all it was a lovely afternoon and I can't recommend them enough.
First visit - really impressed! Fantastic food with a wide range of choice. Service was so friendly and helpful. Perfect relaxed evening in a homely pub atmosphere! Definitely will return and highly recommended for an authentic home cooking experience. Great!
We visited yesterday without advance booking and was gratefully accommodated in a perfect spot in the bar area with our pooch. Rare roast beef for all 3 of us, veg plentiful enjoyed by us all. The best roast I've had out in a while. Thank you. We haven't been to you for a while and we'll be back again soon.
Celebrated our Civil Partnership at The Red House yesterday and the whole experience was nothing short of perfect! The venue itself is a perfect country pub - thatched with a very homely atmosphere in the beautiful Berkshire countryside. We used the private dining room just off the main restaurant, which was absolutely ideal for our party of 10. The food was just amazing! We wanted our guests to choose their preferred dishes, rather than have have a one course fits all, which worked perfectly. The kitchen presented all the courses on time and piping hot and the comments from the guests were very complimentary. The service was second to none and we MUST reserve special praise for Maureen, who made sure our day was very special - Thank you Maureen! Recommend without reservation.
Great find, good food, friendly and efficient staff, great ambience. Everyone smiling, customers and staff who seemed to enjoy their job. Dog friendly, even treats for dogs (if they are well behaved) Just what a country pub should be! Improtue Sunday lunch. Buzzing atmosphere and excellent selection of beers ...pity I was driving this time, but will be back!! Well done.
Stunning pub, with lovely staff and food!
We chose to have our low-key wedding dinner here, and certainly believe we chose well. The food is good quality, and of a slightly higher yet reasonable price. A 3 course meal will cost you between 30 and 50 pounds. 10 meals of mostly 3 courses only set us back 320 ish pounds. Lovely staff and picturesque location, but could use some more vegetarian options.
Met up with friends at this beautiful country pub. Staff were friendly. The food was absolutely delicious! Freshly cooked and good portions. We will come again. Thank you
Went in on the off chance of being able to get a table on a busy Sunday lunch time . I have to say the staff were extremely accommodating and managed to squeeze us in. The food was superb and service was excellent will be definitely going out of my way to visit again and can't recommend it enough.
Great roast dinner, had small one, just right. Lovely pudding. Nice country pub with a grand restaurant.
This is a beautiful pub in the countryside. We had a family special occasion dinner here for 17 people. The food was superb, drinks plentiful and all ran very smoothly with friendly and efficient service. Perfect - cannot really say much more.
Wow! What a fab place. Food was awesome. So much so that we ate there again the next night. It tasted delicious and was so well presented. Quick and friendly service. GF widely available. Fantastic surroundings! Stayed on a Britstop. The canal was just round the corner so we made good use of our bikes! Would definitely recommend!
Lovely lunch, great classic style restaurant. Very much enjoyed by all my family for our gathering. Will be back again as want yo take in more of the superb location. Thank you.
Excellent food, and lovely friendly staff
Beautiful location, convenient access, friendly staff and great service.
Overall great experience. Went for Sunday lunch. Service was great, very quick and really friendly staff. Loved the food and the great thing was it wasn't a tiny little silly portion, it had all the essentials and the beef (which I had) was cooked to perfection. The only thing that let the food down was the slightly over cooked Yorkshire pudding which I normally love so hence the 4 stars instead of 5! But it was great would definitely recommend, however would book as it gets quite busy and you want to guarantee your table.
Nice country pub restaurant. Lovely quaint building in a country lane. Good sized car park that's easy to access and park. Good range of beers and larger, including zero alcohol versions. We stopped for lunch on a Sunday, so the menu was just roasts or fish and chips. But we needed have worried. The roast beef and the roast pork were really nice. And Eaton Mess after completed the treat. All good, we'll be back again 😎👍👍👍
Visited the other day for a meal with friends. It's a well presented establishment with helpful staff, despite its arriving at the busiest time. Food style is somewhat French, very good food, portion sizes just about right. My wife loved the duck breast, and i loved the steak and kidney pudding. Lemon tart was fine, but not quite stellar. Prices are reasonable enough for a special meal out
It is a nice setting with a lovely pub area with an okay dining area. The service was just... okay. The waitress was a bit slow, even though it was empty. For starter I had the duck liver patê, which I don't recommend. It was so compressed it felt like a solid block of butter, but it tasted alright. For mains I had the beer battered haddock, which was huge and what you would expect from a pub! I enjoyed it. Overall, it was an alright meal but I feel they are trying to be more of a fancy restaurant and less of a pub, which doesn't work when your food is still pub standard. I would of given 4 stars if they didn't try so hard.
I almost feel bad about writing this review but quite honestly, I am SO sad and disappointed that my husband's 65th birthday was such a wash out. We celebrated our wedding here in July 2015 so it's a special place for us. There was one person manning the bar, taking orders and flying in and out of the kitchen to collect the food. Every time he entered the bar area, there was an almighty SLAM as the door closed. Even to those of us with hearing problems, this was enough to ruin the evening. Two of our cheese soufflé dishes were half their normal size but we couldn't face another 20 minute wait to have them made again. The menu was so limited, I ended up with an enormous bowl of salad and chips for my main course as I didn't fancy vegan fish and chips. There was some kind of conference taking place in the main restaurant and when they all came into the bar, the noise was incredible. I now understand the fella trying to serve absolutely everyone (Ben) had only rostered himself because there were only two tables booked. Was there nobody on standby in case it got busy? We were asked whether we wanted puddings and my 'knowing look' to remind Ben we'd brought a cake didn't work. He was so stressed, I'm surprised he didn't scream at me! I asked if they had a candle. They didn't. I had brought one (luckily) and it's a miracle my husband didn't notice all the covert whispering and shenanigans. We felt sorry for Ben. He was overrun but surely, an extra 50 or so walk ins warranted a phone call for back up. We had been told the menu was pathetically small because they'd been so busy over the Easter weekend. I'll never forget my salad and chips main course :-( None of the above issues were our fault and my husband's 'special' meal was anything but. Very sad indeed but it's unlikely we'll go back to our wedding reception venue again.
Oh dear, once upon a time so good but now mediocre. Almost empty all evening and whilst the guy behind the bar tried his best it still took an hour for the starters to come out. Food uninspiring but loads of chips.
Pre booked food for family party. Very disappointed with over cooked roast potatoes then over microwaved to warm up. 8 chips? Fish nice but too much batter. Meat on roasts good. Limited pudding choices. Table too small, cramped. Will not be returning.
Had a horrible visit. The whole pub was full of flies. It was so bad we went outside but that was no better. It totally ruined the evening. Food was ok but very limited menu. Burgers were quite dry and over salted. Fish cake was 90% mash.
This place is closed… we reserved a table for 25 people for roast and all turned up and the person said it was shut and under new management… it was so disappointing as the website is still running as if it’s still open and you can still make bookings!
