Opinions de The Anchor Oxford
A beautiful, airy, Victorian pub in a lovely location (children's park opposite over the bridge). Worth a visit for the decor and ambience alone, although the food is great too. Highly recommended.
Had heard only good things about this place and was not disappointed. Food was delicious, interior was beautiful and good service! Will be back next time Im in Oxford.
Love this pub. They just do the basics well. Well kept range of beers and lager. Great menu. It’s not cheap but it’s comfortable and civilised. Good bar and waiting staff. Sadly they have turned their car park into an outdoor eating area (blooming covid!!!). So parking is a pain in a busy residential area at the weekend.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ~Review from a coeliac~ Excellent pub! I've had a few gluten free food options here and it's absolutely delicious! Always worth a visit. Thank you :)
My family and I really wanted to extend our heartfelt thanks to you and your entire team for the outstanding care and attention we received during our visit. My family and I felt genuinely welcomed from the moment we arrived, and the warmth, distinction, and professionalism shown by your staff made the experience truly memorable. The level of courtesy and personal attention was remarkable. Every member of your team made us feel valued, comfortable, and incredibly well looked after — something that does not go unnoticed. We were thoroughly impressed and sincerely grateful. The food was excellent, the atmosphere was inviting, and the overall service exceeded our expectations. But above all, it was the exceptional treatment and the distinguished manner of your staff that left the strongest impression on us. Please extend our appreciation to everyone involved. We left feeling immensely pleased and with the clear sense that your team takes great pride in what they do. Thank you once again for such a wonderful experience. Warm regards,
We’re so glad to see The Anchor back open—and under new ownership, it’s better than ever. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the new menu with its Middle Eastern twist is a fantastic upgrade. I had the lamb chops, which were perfectly cooked and full of flavour. My partner ordered the beef, along with the halloumi sticks and chilli garlic prawns to start—all absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. The service was friendly and attentive, and it’s clear the team really care about creating a great experience. We’ll definitely be back—The Anchor is quickly becoming a new favourite in the area!
The food was truly amazing, and this was our first visit after the renovation. The ambiance was absolutely top-notch. We were served by a blonde girl with black-frame glasses, and while I apologize that I did not get her name, she was wonderful. All of the waiters and the manager were hospitable, tolerant, and provided excellent care. We certainly plan to visit again soon.
Amazing dinner! Had the half chicken, it was gorgeous, nicely moist too. Hazelnut cake for dessert was amazing, literally melts in your mouth and the staff were so kind and well mannered.
Wonderful gastropub set next to the canal with private dining rooms. At short notice, they arranged 24 of us to have dinner and provided amazing private dining rooms next to each other upstairs. Beautiful setting and great food. Most of the group loved their food, but a few had an issue with their burgers. Wonderful accommodating manager, great range of food including vegan and gluten free options. Good selection of drinks. Nice pub in a gorgeous setting. Small car park to the rear and Street parking available.
Very nice upscale pub with very warm and inviting service. Our cocktails and food were fantastic. Maybe a little pricey but wouldn’t keep us from coming back.
Courteous and helpful service and good food for different diets. Excellent covered outside seating with heating available for cooler/damper days. Limited, but sufficient, parking on the road outside (2 hours). Most seem to come on foot or by bike, though. Staff are kindly continuing to wear masks post "Freedom Day", even when serving outside. Portions are sensibly sized and reasonably priced.
Great outdoor seating area, can choose to be undercover or not. Arrived after the main kitchen had closed on a Sunday evening, but they set up an excellent taco stand for latecomers. Really friendly staff add to the chill vibes of a great local pub.
Very friendly staff, which was great. The place itself is quite spacious with two separate parts, dining and bar. The bar area allows you to eat too and they also allow dogs in that area whilst in the dining are dogs aren't allowed. The fish and chips was really good.
We had a very nice Sunday lunch at the Anchor who accommodated us arriving an hour early due the rain. They were also very accommodating and tolerant of 2 exploring toddlers. Food was good quality and reasonably priced.
Delicious food, we ate fish and chips (gorgeous taste) and veggie burger. It was very good, freshly made. What is also a huge advantage, the waiters take care about people with food allergies and special diets. Minus it was a bit cold inside.
Great pub in Oxford to visit, especially while you can only sit outdoors! All ran very well, tables greatly spaced, heaters and fire pits everywhere, all under cover, really smart and we'll put together. Table service for drinks which was very fast. We only had a few side orders of food, but they were so good! We visited for a outdoors comedy night and it was great! So good for somewhere to put on entertainment while everything is still outdoors. Only thing I can say is that be warned it is a lot further from Oxford Train station/center of the city then expected! We had quite a hike to get up there, and by end of the night needed a taxi back.
Not extensive but decent menu and service was quite nippy. On a cold February night it was quite cool inside even though fire was blazing. Decent IPA served. Parking can be a problem, but there are some on stret parking locations nearby.
A quiet pub a bit out of the main areas of Oxford. A conmfortable place to have a drink, and the outside is nice during the sunnier parts of the year.
Friendly staff, great location and comfortable atmosphere. Food is excellent and reasonably priced, drinks were good. It appears to be popular even though it hasn’t been open for long. Hope it does very well.
Too bad they didn't have the Tofu and Chips at that time. But the other vegetarian options were also good: plant-burger and eggplant parmigiana. Make sure to order their dessert! Also, I love the interior of the restaurant!
Nice backstreet food pub with a relaxing atmosphere. As a party of 6 we had 6 roast lunches last Sunday. For £18 - £20 a head (just for the roast) you would think that the potatoes might actually resemble the crispy, fluffy roast potatoes we all know and love. The must have in a British roast dinner. But not one ROAST potato on any of our plates - they were all hard boiled chunks of potato that might have seen the inside of an oven for 15 minutes.Crispy - no. Fluffy - no. Hard - yes. Very poor really, but being English we didnt complain of course... Perhaps who's ever in charge of the kitchen could look into this one and do better. Even I can make roast potatoes that are heavenly, so a professional should find it very easy.
More of a restaurant than a pub, nice place so worth a visit.
Nice traditional pub in Oxford with decent food at a decent price
Seemed a bit sterile with tiled walls behind bar and high ceilings so chatter echoes a bit. Staff were very polite and drinks were the usual. Prices ok.
Portions rather small for the price, though the food was good. I didn't like the execution of in app ordering, as if you don't have a phone on you or it's our of battery the alternatives are inconvenient. Outside venue was very nice for lots of people, well ventilated and good mood lighting
Not a great experience. Food was ridiculously slow coming. My risotto was undergone and not really an asparagus risotto as it had tomato and some kind of odd spice, with not enough asparagus! A service charge if 12.5%was added.
The decor is lovely. The staff are really helpful ..unfortunately they are really let down by the food. I had to send mine back and the waiters acknowledged that the fish and chips were not cooked… were very sorry and took it off my bill. It was a real shame.
We got served beer in plastic cups. They said they run out of glass cups. How is that possible?
Such a disappointment! Lovely decor and potential but on a Wednesday evening, we waited almost 20min to order (there were only two other tables with guests in the restaurant section). They didn’t have much of the menu available because of some delivery issues during the holidays, this even included beer (really, at a pub?!?) I ordered the baked Camembert (a whole ten pounds) and some focaccia. The former was just a low rate cheese heated in the microwave, while the latter was stale, drenched in oil, somewhat burnt, and crumbly… inedible. The server seemed friendly but after serving that dismal meal, I feel I was taken for a fool… in other words, never again. Probably much better place to go just for a drink.
Went for a celebratory dinner but unfortunately the experience was disappointing. Main course and starter were served together. The food was well prepared, though. Our waiters were however unpleasant, seemed unfriendly and overworked. We were served bottled water that was worse than Spanish tap water.. My girlfriend‘s allergy notice was promptly ignored and the food had to be prepared again. The anchor appears to be a nice establishment and judging by these reviews my experience seems to be unusual and simply a result of incompetent management.
Quite let down by this. Came to celebrate a 40th birthday. Waiters took ages to take our order and the food was over an hour to arrive while we have children with us. We even asked for the food to be brought as it is ready as the kids wee hungry. The decor is nice inside but for some reason they had two windows open and everyone is sitting in the pub wearing their jackets.. not the cosy experience you’d expect from a pub.
It is our local pub, we live couple of minutes from it. We showed up yesterday just a bit before 7pm to grab some food. The restaurant looked busy but had quite few tables empty. We asked if we can have a table for two. The waiter (short black hair/middle eastern/balkan look) greeted us very unpleasantly and said that they don’t have any tables and we can have drinks outside only. No info when table would be available or advice when to come back 🤷🏼♀️ We then stepped outside to see that outside bit seem closed and no heaters are on. We then remembered that they had quite few times free on their online booking system (which was odd), so we booked online and came back 10min later to find out that this is “a system glitch”. Again no suggestion to wait certain time or come back later, they just clearly wanted us out, extremely frustrating.
Was expecting good things however, was lacklustre and disappointing. Came for Sunday lunch. Service was poor, roast potato’s cold. Food took a very long time to arrive. Menu was outdated ‘cauliflower cheese’ no longer being served and hasn’t been removed from menu. Bread and balsamic, no balsamic felt should have been mentioned before ordering. Unfortunately wouldn’t recommend.
Absolute joke. We booked an outside table for 14:30 on a Saturday weeks in advance. We arrived on time, the service was awfully slow to be seated, given menus, and have our order taken. I eventually went inside to find the waiter to ask to order, for him to come outside at 14:55 to say the kitchen was shutting in 5 minutes and they weren’t taking any more orders. How this business is functioning is beyond me. Would not recommend.
