The roasts were great, but the desserts were the real standout — a must-try. The outdoor seating had a great atmosphere, making it a lively and enjoyable spot. Service was a bit slow, but it was understandably busy.
I haven’t been in this place for at least 3-4 years. And feedback I would like to give is absolutely great! Food, service and place itself. I completely forgot how great place it is if it’s a sunny day. Beautiful veranda and garden seats. I ordered fish of the day and some monkfish tacos. All was extremely fresh, fish were melting so soft. Will definitely consider this place for summer times and any other times if to sit indoors.
Absolutely excellent! My wife and I had the salmon appetizer that was mouthwatering. We then both ordered the wellington which was cooked to perfection with a glaze for the mashed potatoes. The wine pairing of les oliviers merlot rounded off the last inch of perfection on the pallet.
This was a recent discovery near Botley while we were visiting the nearby church. We didn’t have a reservation and the host gave us an excellent table on the garden under the tree, great for us and our baby. We ordered just some desserts and coffee and they very delicious and with excellent presentation. We will be back for lunch or dinner.
Had a lovely evening last night at The Fishes. Good food, Blue the mini daschund was made welcome and a real relaxing Saturday night. Will definitely visit again.
Very nice restaurant. Party of 12 for lunch so we pre-ordered from the set menu at £35 per head. All choices were delivered correctly and in good time, can't complain! The food was very well presented and prepared (maybe the chicken in the supreme was a bit overcooked or sat a little while but no biggie). Good choice of wines, beers and soft drinks. Well made coffee to finish. Excellent attentive serving staff and we really appreciated the bowl of chips! Thanks for making our family meal a great one.
Wonderful dining experience with friendly, welcoming staff who looked after us all night. The staff kindly let me taste their pale ale as I was looking for something similar to Neck Oil and I can see the Purity Pale Ale they have on tap is excellent. The food was superb, particularly the Steak & Ale pie and Sticky Toffee pudding (photos) which they kindly swapped the ice-cream for custard. The food is very well priced as well which I was pleasantly surprised given the lovely location. Overall I had a fantastic time and will definitely come back! :)
Had a lovely roast dinner! One of the best Iv had in a pub before! The service was brilliant, Sophie was our server and she was smiley, attentive and thorough, not just with our table but with everyone in the restaurant! Definitely would return/recommend!
I tried the soup of the day and a courgette side dish, and both were simply amazing. The soup was rich and flavorful, perfect for the season, while the courgette side was cooked to perfection, full of fresh taste and well-balanced seasoning. The service was prompt and attentive, and the atmosphere was relaxed, making for an enjoyable experience overall. Everything was well-prepared and exceeded expectations. Will definitely return—an excellent experience.
We had a wonderful experience at this cozy outdoor sitting area. The ambiance was perfect for a relaxed meal, and we enjoyed the crisp autumn air. We tried several dishes from the autumn menu, and everything was absolutely delicious. Each dish was flavorful and well-seasoned, capturing the essence of the season. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy a comfortable dining experience with great food!
As someone who is in the hospitality industry and operating gastro pubs … This pub is a jewel in Peach Pubs / Revolution bars estate. Shout out to Lochie the personable and highly professional bar person who is so welcoming and just a happy chap ( all the way from Oz ) he’s a great first impression as you walk through the pub doors … also, he’s colleague from Oz too.. 👍 The lovely Manageress Laura is a pleasure to chat too and always makes a fuss of my fur baby ‘Milo Elvis Ellis’ ..Milo for short … Great food , extremely well presented and every mouthful delicious … Menu is well balanced for all tastes …great dinning area and very comfortable. This pub and its setting is just awesome with a well kept large beer garden and Teepie for functions / events beautifully presented and an outside bar and food area … A must visit if you’re in the area …I’ve found my local …. A big thank you to Laura and her team 👍 see you all soon.
As part of the eat out to help out we visited the fishes. It was not my first visit but I will say the food was as good as the other two visits. I had rump steak, which was excellently cooked medium rare as ordered. Others had lamb ribs and this was also very good and cooked very well. Due to it being busy we didn't sit down to our table until 20 minutes after our booked time, but due to the circumstances tbis can be forgiven. Staff were very helpful. Will return, excellent.
Great place. Lots of seating areas - on the balcony at the back, in the garden, at the front etc.. There seemed to be several menus to choose from so there's something for everyone. Moderately priced. Polite and attentive staff.
Lovely place to come for lots of different reasons. Good for just coffee , or at weekends they do an amazing breakfast. We went there on Easter Monday morning. Sat on the Veranda in the sun. Was perfect. The garden is beautiful. They have a large tippi in the garden, an American silver van for the bar out there & an impressive Bar b Q area too. Garden great for kids to run around too & dogs are welcome too. We also go there for dinner sometimes. Always excellent food & nice surroundings. Service is good too. We've just booked it for our sons wedding reception in the garden, in September. Never disappoints us.
We arrived after booking last Sunday…Roast was £25 pounds for two course. We had heard so much about the food, we were not disappointed. I had the Lamb my daughter the pork The roast potatoes were the best I have tasted the Yorkshire pudding was wonderful I have been to so many places were the Yorkshire pudding was left sat in grease so the bottom is greasy, but not here. A bonus they came round with extra potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. Love the pot of gravy The cauliflower cheese deserves 5* on its own. A great atmosphere Wonderful food and excellent service. The garden is a great place to have a pizza and relax with the young ones We will be back.
Beautiful food and outstanding service 👌 highly recommended 👍 amazing very cozy place with beautiful big garden x also pet friendly which was important for us. Oscar our waiter was very nice and friendly and helpful x thank you so much for our lovely time spent at the Fishes would definitely love to come back ❤️
My favourite pub in Oxford. Very special pub as this is where my husband proposed to me on the bridge over the river at the bottom of this lovely pubs garden. It's a very romantic setting. There's a teepee in the garden for hire or seating when not booked. Food is very good, a little pricey now though. Staff were friendly and very helpful. They have a dedicated gluten free menu which is great. Highly recommended.
Finally after 2 years we could come back to this lovely pub restaurant. Their service and foods are still at the high standard as before. Especially there is a new staff who has just started to work yesterday and I would like to give 5 star for his hospitality. I hope I would see him again next time of my visit. Today's special fish was amazingly delicious and fresh. Thank you for the New year treat discount, too. I deeply appreciate it. Strongly recommend for all occasions even with dog.
Took my mum to the fishes for Mother’s Day. What a wonderful Sunday roast we had and the desert was amazing on top of this the service was brilliant will definitely be going back again.
Delicious food, with a kind and subtle service. We went with the family for a Friday night dinner, during Corona days. Very safe environment, with polite service and well cooked meals.
Really friendly and attentive staff. Excellent choice of food on the menu and great drinks selection. Very much looking forward to visiting again.
The Fishes is a amazing restaurant. Sam the assistant manager was so helpful and so friendly with the customer's. Food was so good and not expensive at all. If you are staying in Oxford, the Fishes is worth a visit
Lovely pub with great food and a large selection of drinks. Enjoyed my experience there. Staff are awesome. Parking is plenty. Would recommend.
Fabulous hidden gem of a pub in a small village. We can in the evening so didn’t get a chance to see the amazing (and huge) garden in all its glory but certainly will be coming back during the day! Service was fantastic and attentive, food delicious and plentiful. The price is a notch higher than most gastropubs but it’s well worth it.
Had a spontaneous meal here- never heard of this place, but it came up on Google. Food was typical gastro-pub grub, Sunday roast was lovely (though could use more gravy). Delicious posset for dessert. The highlight was we sat on the beautiful terrace in the balmy Sunday afternoon which was a delight. Our waitress (Tilly) was lovely.
Lovely food. Can't wait to go back again. Lovely old pub with plenty of seating, including a nice outside seating area.
We stayed in an Airbnb across the road from The Fishes so naturally wanted to check it out during our stay in Oxford. We managed to book a table in the bar on Friday night (restaurant was full) and returned on Sunday afternoon for their Sunday Lunch. Both occasions were a delight. The food was outstanding, the service excellent. The staff really made us feel welcome without being overbearing and nothing was too much trouble.
Stopped by with a friend for Sunday Lunch. Fantastic food and service by the front of house team here. Our waitress was excellent in showing us the specials, helpful in ordering and even offered us more veg! Will be coming again.
Really enjoyed our quick lunch- fish of the day (trout) was amazing. We also tried Srilankan curry- fresh and nice blend of flavour.
Absolutely lovely little pub, wonderful service from a helpful server, Alex, and excellent food! Will definitely be back again! Thank you for a great evening :)
Fantastic experience – the staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and really on top of everything. We came with four kids, and the children’s meals were spot on – just the right portion sizes and plenty of choice. There's also a great-sized garden with loads of space for the kids to run around.
What a fabulous lunch in a good pub with excellent food, friendly accomodating staff and great service. Nice to find such a place. Even the coffee at the end of the meal was superlative. Only issue is the condition and cleanliness of the gents loos. Not in keeping with the rest of this fabulous establishment. We will return!
Long lazy Saturday lunch. Great selection on the menu and the specials board really did have something for everyone. Service wasn't quick but we weren't rushing so it was perfect for us. Our waiter was knowledgeable and flexible when we asked for a few different things. Highly recommend and we will definitely be back.
We'd been planning to come here for ages and decided to treat ourselves on Boxing Day. I'm glad we booked as we weren't the only people to think this was a great idea. We started with some halloumi fries and lovely padron peppers. I followed with a succulent rump steak and my wife had delicious vegetarian Sri Lankan curry. All of this washed down by a fruity Portuguese red, Tanners Douro. The service was excellent and we will definitely be back for more in 2026. Happy new year!
Carpark was busy and we didn't have a booking, but staff managed to find us a table with a bit of a view. Good selection of food and beers(Roasted Nut from Marlow brewery Rebellion a fine choice), including a good selection of low to know. Selected Luck Saint(good flavour for a low to no) to wash down a really good game pie, with a mash potato top, other pies were pastry. A good discovery well worth checking out.
I struggled a little with this review because I wanted to give 5 stars. I had to give 4. The location, decor and general feel of this venue is amazing. We love it. I’d like to say the same for the service and food. Unfortunately, I can’t. The service needs to improve to a level to match the venue. More friendly, more attentive and more caring. I had the full English. The bacon was rock hard, the sausage overcooked and the black pudding minuscule. It wouldn’t take much to have better service and better food to complement the venue and I think the challenge is laid down to achieve just that. Better. Please.
Catching up with friend for dinner. Originally went to Trout in Wolvercote but they were having some issues and not taking in any more guests so opted for THe Fishes.....everything happens for a reason! The atmosphere was buzzing, food came out very quickly 😳 and gave me chips instead of the mash. Offered to rectify but I declined. We really enjoyed the food and even chose the same dish!! Finished off with a creme brulee and cointreau coffee....delicious!!
Had been a while since I visited The Fishes, we had a great experience. The staff were really friendly, so helpful with our requirements, kids and adults! They were patient, food was delicious and we felt really relaxed.
We booked as this is a dog friendly pub. When we sat down we were told we were not allowed dogs in the restaurant so had to take the dog outside and wait 20 minutes for a table in the bar. This should have been clarified when we booked.
The team were very friendly and helpful. We had preordered food and it came out very promptly which was great with 11 small children as part of our group! The food was delicious and very fresh which is often not the case with a large group. The setting is lovely, we were in the conservatory at the back which kept us slightly out of the way from the other customers, and gave us some space. As a group of 21 with lots of small children was a great set up and much appreciated! We were a little disappointed that we got charged for 2 no shows as we did let them know in advance and as we were a large group so the overall spend was significant. However we will definitely be back again - I'm sure it's lovely there in the summer!
Went there this Sunday with the family, very good service helpful, friendly & professional. Nice place Only reason not giving 5 for food is that they ran out of stuffing and coliflour cheese, appreciate it was late in the day, but if serving late roast, have enough of everything. Would go again very tasty
The building, location and decor are stunning. The staff were attentative and friendly. The food was good but for the price not quite up to scratch. For example the mash and cabbage was not very generous and the gravy was thin. The steak and ale pie was delicious but was it made in house?
The food was good, but the ordering by app instead of by waiter at The Fishes was a major pain. It didn't work very well. The wait staff was friendly enough, but the experience fell flat. After I first posted this review, my husband reminded me that, when we arrived at the restaurant, we were directed to take any one of several available outdoor tables, none of which had been cleared and were in fact littered with cigarette butts, dirty dishes and trash under the table. We had to flag someone down to clean the table top and place our order. I noticed that the wait staff would bring out food and drink then go straight back inside after serving their cargo without looking around to see what tables needed to be cleared. My daughter and son in law said The Fishes was fine before the pandemic and that the restaurant might be sorting out some changes.
Beef Wellington was very tasty but the pastry slightly undercooked. Only green veg available, nothing else which was a bit frustrating. Service was slow but the restaurant was packed. It was way too noisy, we couldn't hear each other talk for some of the meal. Its a popular place which is great but on reflection on a friday night id rather eat somewhere with a few less tables so I could talk to my dinner companions.
Nice looking pub. Food sounds nice and should be. Took along time to get food. The food was average. Had the chicken schnitzel it was ok. The strip of chicken skin on top was actually the best tasting skin ever. Well dune for that. Unfortunately the fries it looks like the remains of a bag of frozen, in my opinion should have gone in the bin over cooked and maximum of thumb nail length. Why can people not cut and peal potato’s ? Deep fried anyway. In my opinion fresh deep fried are better and a place charging these prices should be making the effort . There was at least 10 waiting staff so the orders and and special where explained and take very well.
We came for valentines day and we were excited to go, but when we got there they left us in a corner table and didnt make any effort to ensure we had a nice night. Surprised that most guests were not there for vday but got way better service. We were constantly trying to get the waiters attention and barely achieved it. Too busy waiting on bigger tables and made us feel forgotten. The food wasn't even worth being happy about either, my pie was mushy and soggy, and not well seasoned. My husnads fish was good but the chips were anaemic and barely passable. The only saving grace was dessert which bumped this to 2. I wanna hope this happened because it was a busy Saturday night, but our experience for vday was ruined.
We were a prebooked party of 10. We had preordered from the 'Sunday Special' menu. I am a 78yr old, retired professional cook, and the roast dinner was the worst that I have ever had. At first glance, when the meal arrived it looked good. A large, crisp, Yorkshire pudding sitting on top of two thin slices of very rare beef, ( perfect for me, but not to everyone's taste ). Sadly, the praise stops there! The plates were cold. Underneath the beef was a thin, cold, carrot and parsnip, and some mashed up pale cabbage. To the side of this ensemble was a small 'roast' potato, cut in half, and another half potato. These I decided to be not fresh, but frozen. As an extra I decided to choose cauliflower cheese. This was very tasty, but as the cauliflower was so mashed up it could have been rice in a cheese sauce for all I know! The rest in our party of 10 had similar experiences. All meals were cold, and with some lacking in certain vegetables that were advertised. I politely asked if my plate could be put into the microwave for one minute and was told by the waitress that I would 'miss the experience', and with that, she walked off! A minute later, a young waiter passed by and I asked the same question. He smiled, and did what I asked without question.
Second visit in 12 months. Basic Pub grub, inattentive staff, and on the last visit, with my wife, son, his wife and grandkids, they allowed a large group of foul mouthed yobs to spread themselves into our space. Utterly disgusting experience. Not be back.
If I could give 0 stars, I would. I'm not leaving this review for a generic, robotic response like others have received—this is for potential customers who might consider dining here. My partner and I are locals and frequent The Fishes regularly. Normally, the food is okay, and the best feature is the lovely outdoor area. However, this recent experience was beyond unacceptable. After waiting 40 minutes for our food (with no explanation), it became clear they'd lost our order. Instead of owning up to it, they seemed to rush together a meal—quickly frying some chicken and tossing it onto a plate. My plate was barely warm, suggesting it hadn't been sitting on the pass for more than a moment. While the fries were hot, the chicken was raw in the middle. Yes, raw—as in visibly undercooked and unsafe to eat. Nothing quite says "bon appétit" like a side of salmonella.
We came for the roast and when I tell you it was nothing short of awful , the pork was tasteless the potatoes were rock solid on the inside and clearly frozen. The best part of the meal was when it was getting taken away from me ,won’t be returning.
