Opinions de Way Station Coffee Shop Newhall
This is the neighborhood coffee shop you've been looking for. An LA classic right in Newhall. I've been coming here for some 35 years. Many of the employees stay for years and years. You're sure to get a filling and tasty meal. Take a moment or two and look at all the memorabilia. Fun place! Updated: we had a delicious breakfast at the Way Station and it continues to be your neighborhood diner. 18 January 2025
My late husband Steve and I used to visit in early 1980's we would go for their food which was A+ and the atmosphere which was also an A+ service was excellent too. I have moved from California and reside here in Kansas now I have been thinking about this restaurant and remembering it's name and now I do. I'm not sure on the price but it was inexpensive.
Absolutely love this place. I do wish they had Omelettes but it’s Okay. Delicious food
Stopped in at Waystation for breakfast and it did not disappoint. Ordered the two-egg combo with hash browns and bacon—and everything was on point. The bacon slices are huge, thick, and perfectly crispy. Hash browns had that golden crunch, and the eggs were cooked exactly how I asked. Then came the pancakes—massive, fluffy, and delicious. One could easily feed two people, but I powered through. Definitely the highlight of the meal. Also had the fresh-squeezed orange juice, and you can taste the difference—ice cold and super refreshing. Great service, solid portions, and prices that make it worth every bite. If you’re hungry and want a classic, no-fail breakfast, Waystation is the spot.
This diner is a small cute spot on Main the portions are very good these pancakes barely fit in the to go box there's outdoor seating and a wait list for tables as their is limited seating indoors also counter seating available the staff seemed to work closely with each other completing service they also followed up on the close to see if their guests needed anything more to go nice touch will post updates as I can't wait to try more from this spot!
If you decide you want a “hearty” breakfast, this is the right spot. It’s located in the heart of downtown Newhall, on Main street. It only serves breakfast, so be there early to grab a table inside or outside. It can get crowded on the weekends but the staff is very cordial and efficient. Food that feels the soul…👍🏼
Great little diner on Main Street in Old Town Newhall. All kinds of old license plates on the walls and other cool old signs. Prices & serving sizes were great with a super friendly staff! The waitress told me the building it is in used to be an ice cream parlor and there is a section of the original bar counter top and stools still in use! Highly recommend checking this place out if you are in the area.
I was introduced to The Way several years ago and I still love this place. Old school diner that was once an ice cream shop with employees who've been there 30-40 years and who still work just as hard with great attitudes. The food is yummy and is priced right. Head on down to The Way Station!
The food and staff are great...The chairs and booths need to be replaced. My chair at the bar at the back of the café was very wobbly.
Classic American Breakfast, We had walked by here so many times & glad we finally got to eat there. Food is a good Value for the price. Feels like a small town coffee shop which is great. Overall it was great. We had a hashbrown that was more of a mash, We asked them to make it crispy After our food was finished I asked to check on the Hashbrown, was told, "Can't you see he is checking on it now?" Not sure why I needed to get a response with attitude just to ask for an update. I could understand if I asked few times or asked with an attitude my self. The rest of service was good.
The Way Station Coffee Shop in Newhall is an old-style diner with consistent reasonably priced food and a bottomless cup of good coffee. The portions are generous and the pancakes won't disappoint! Sometimes it's difficult to find a place that opens early, Way Station does, keep in mind they shutter on Tuesdays. A local place you must try for breakfast or lunch.
Sunday. There was a 15-20min wait which was not bad at all. Very much expected on a Sunday afternoon on this strip down the street from a church. The service was excellent. We ordered coffee and breakfast. I wanted the steak but they ran out. I had eggs n sausage. My friend ordered pork chop and eggs. The eggs were cooked perfectly the way I ordered. The sausage was ok. The hash browns were pretty good and more than I needed. I had to add some salt n pepper and hot sauce. The sourdough toast was perfect! They butter it for you but if you don’t like too much butter, it’s best you let them know beforehand. I tried my friends pork chop and it was dry and over cooked. I don’t even recall the pork chops being seasoned. The pork chop was definitely the worst thing we ordered and the world needs to know. But again, service was fantastic. They have a small lot in the back but street parking is also an option.
Looks like a classic diner, well-lived in with posters from the 40s and 50s. Food was okay. Eggs Benedict was runny and drowned in gravy. Potatoes weren’t crisped at all. One of the rare occasions I didn’t finish breakfast. Grapefruit juice was from a bottle. Numerous sanitation issues: -Old toast lying exposed on shelf. -Counter not sealed - spilled runny egg and couldn’t get it out of the counter crevice -Plates had hairline cracks - legally they need to be replaced -At one point they used the head of a dirty mop to clear a spiderweb 2 feet away from where I was eating. -Ceiling pipes have never been cleaned - caked in dust. Love diners. Support the last vestiges of Americana. But never here again.
It exactly what you are looking for. This place is exactly what you are looking for in an American diner. The food is pretty good and the vibes are right. Its not fancy but it is good for the soul
Way Station is located in a cute area just off Main Street. The area is perhaps the best thing about Way Station. My wife and I went (party of two) and there was a 40 minute wait on a Saturday morning. That actually made us a bit excited (long wait = high demand = good food). Unfortunately, they have an archaic method of keeping track of the wait list by reading off the list and announcing it so you can’t go shop around while waiting because you’re not sure where you are on the list. When called in, the atmosphere was fun and nostalgic with license plates and old famous people posted around the restaurant. The staff were really helpful and fast but the food took longer than expected. (That’s most likely why the wait was so long.) And when the food arrived, it was either over done (I.e., eggs and bacon) or underdone (I.e., the hash-browns). The coffee was not great either, like Maxwell house meets Folgers. Finally, the price was very reasonable and the menu was not grandiose. They had the essentials but not much else. The best I could describe it would be that most people probably go for nostalgia, not for food.
I decided to have breakfast here today. I haven't been here in almost 20 years. Eggs runny, bacon cold, hash browns mushy. I don't see how they receive an A rating. Very dirty, everywhere. Kitchen is dark and hidden in back of restaurant. Locals seem to have priority. Won't be returning anytime soon.
Very sad, this place has gone downhill. The service was horrible, the coffee was tasteless, and the hash browns more closely resembled mashed potatoes. They are using a mini menu with no options for kids. I’ve been eating here since 1997 and used to crave this place every time I came to visit family in Santa Clarita—but not anymore.
I was excited to try Way Station...a classic diner, very good prices, and just basic breakfast food, nothing fancy....just what you need every now and then! Unfortunately, my excitement to be here wasn't matched with the experience provided. I came with my son and we were seated fairly quickly. Outside tables were available too (though it was a little chilly for our tastes so we opted for inside.) There's a big sign that says "wear a mask" at the front door and the staff who greeted us and took our order were all masked. I had coffee and my son had lemonade. He liked the lemonade...generous pour with a full, separate cup of ice. The coffee was, at best, browned water...This is the lowest possible standard for diner coffee...Warm? Yes. In a nice mug? Yes. Brown? Yes. Any flavor? None at all. A breakfast place, to be at all legitimate has to have good coffee. The coffee here is not good. While sipping it I noticed neither of the cooks was wearing their masks properly. One had it around his chin with both his nose and mouth exposed. The other only had his mouth covered with his nose exposed. The first one had no gloves of any kind on and I saw him touch his mouth with his hand, then reach down to put food on a plate. He was also using his bare hand to add cheese to the dish. I understand different people have different preferences and comfort levels when it comes to health and safety...but it's literally the law of the land that food workers have to wear masks. In the midst of a global pandemic that has killed almost a million people, there's no excuse whatsoever for a cook to not be wearing a mask while preparing food. Not to mention touching his face and then plating the food. As much as I appreciate a classic diner, a dingy one even, I felt like I was taking a risk by eating food they would serve here. We left some money on the table for the drinks and informed our server we wouldn't be able to stay and left. I can't imagine ever setting foot in Way Station again after witnessing such flagrant disregard for mandatory health protocols. (Not to mention the lack of common sense on display by the cooks.)
