Tip: Make a reservation to avoid a long wait. The lamb sandwich and burgers are highly recommended.
R&D Kitchen in Newport Beach delivers the kind of dining experience that reminds you why certain restaurants become local institutions. The service is consistently excellent—attentive without being intrusive, polished without feeling stiff. It’s the sort of place where you immediately feel well taken care of. If you order the French dip, make sure you ask for the au jus. It’s a small detail, but it’s what elevates the entire dish, and interestingly, it’s something you don’t always find offered the same way in Santa Monica. That extra touch makes the sandwich noticeably more satisfying and complete. Another standout is the chicken fried sandwich, which feels like a staple for good reason—crispy, flavorful, and reliably well-executed every time. R&D Kitchen strikes that rare balance of comfort and refinement, making it a place that’s just as suitable for a casual lunch as it is for an impressive dinner.
Great dining experience. The food is really good and there's some great menu options. Cocktails were on point, and our service was exceptional, oir server took great care of without making us feel rushed. Ideally located right across from a parking structure so its easy to get in and out. Will happily dine here again soon.
The menu is small but the food is absolutely delicious no matter what you order.
This should be 4.9 or honestly 5 stars. Every detail is well-executed. The food, drinks, service, and ambiance are impeccable. You will not be disappointed
Super cool spot for a drink or a meal, food is alacart and the menu is small but everything tastes bomb.
R&D is another fabulous Hillstone establishment. It's fantastic. The night we went it was pretty busy. There's a small parking structure right outside with plenty of parking (it was nearly empty when we visited). Our server was lovely, but didn't know many details about the menu. We have a special diet and instead of saying "I don't know, let me ask" to many of our questions, she gave us the wrong answer, we ordered, then she asked, found out she was incorrect and we had to place a new order which was a little frustrating. The food was great. The ambiance was fantastic. I'm not really a fan of TVs at an upscale feeling place, but they were fine. They do have a dress code, which I love. If you wear a hat, they'll ask you to sit outside on the patio.
Excellent beef dip, chicken sandwich & burgers. Fry's with dips are amazing too.. Service is top notch.
We really loved R&D, it is so hard to get in there and can be super noisy and crowded. We happened to head at the right time and had a lovely time. The food was good as everything super expensive. I like that they had a reasonable price on a glass of wine. Not a glass for 18 to $20. Absolutely ridiculous. I'm going to start giving negative reviews to those restaurants. All restaurants should have a good option for a glass of wine for anywhere from $9 to $13. Not being given the option is just that business to me. So if you can get in. Enjoy.
I have been to almost all R+D restaurants. Food is always good and consistent. Professional staff. Yasmin was serving our table and she was awesome, super friendly and accommodating. R+D is the place I go when I want everything go right and just relax.
R&D kitchen is the perfect place to stop after your visit to Nieman Marcus. I love to sit at the bar and have a glass of Chardonnay with whatever delicious thing I decide to order. I don’t think I’ve ever had anything I did not like there. But I’m pretty much obsessed with the tuna tartare👅💦. PS treat your self to some carrot cake to go and if you’re a delicate little flower such as myself LOL you can have some for today and some for tomorrow. It really is my favorite carrot cake though I think I used to like Flemings carrot cake but now I only like are in the kitchen
Last year R&D changed their menu and it wasn't for the better. They made what felt like "cost cutting" changes. Today we decided to give them another try, and I am happy to report their previous menu is back!! Today's experience was great and the food was delicious. The rotisserie chicken was tender and juicy, the fries were fresh and crispy, and the service was attentive. Looking forward to our next visit!
R+D was one of the nicest experiences I've had at a restaurant in Newport Beach. I ordered the french dip with fries as well as a salad to share, and the quality was amazing. Not only did the food surprise me, the service was top tier too. Would definitely recommend.
Let’s just say this is my favorite place. Amazing restaurant and over all the most amazing service at the R&D. They don’t forget any sauces, they bring everything exactly how you ordered cooked to perfection. And the tuna tartare is my favorite but also the French dip is amazing my husband says. They train the staff so well. Never any mistakes. Angela btw is a great bartender!
Small menu and space. Service was excellent. I went with the French Dip and it was fantastic. Can't beat that dish. Our server was a sweetie and provided great service. The dining room is small so best to come with only 2 people and have a reservation.
4.5 Stars! What a nice experience and getting better. You may find yourself staring at all the patrons waiting outside. I’d head into the bar and sit there. Classic French Omelette & Dings crispy chicken sandwich are very good. R@D starts with better ingredients and it clearly comes out in taste. Their menu is short, but they seem to be on top of it all. Everywhere you look, guests are enjoying different dishes. Mixology is careful and fresh. The well shaken Margarita was awesome. And my honey commented that she could sit there all day, bravo! We are definitely coming back and bringing the rest of the family. You should too.
I was here on a Thursday night, and it was lively. We were a party of 2. Our food was good. The burger could have had more flavor. Our server was excellent and attentive to what was needed. The atmosphere was pieceful, the restaurant was clean, and the out door seating was comfortable with the warmers.
Good place for a drink and a bite in a nice part of the mall. Bar is cozy, plenty of room with TVs on the wall. Good Cocktail selection along with beer and wines by the glass or bottle. Stayed for dinner this time & it didn't disappoint. The chicken sandwich is great! So is the Newporter salad as well as the Carnitas sandwich. Grab some fries too with the special sauce. Little kick on the finish but SO good. Outdoor seating is available with heaters on cool fall nights but no Happy Hour unfortunately.
Holy moly! The BEST dining experience I have had since before COVID. The atmosphere was lively but not overly loud. My wife and I could have a conversation and hear each other easily. The service was the best I’ve had anywhere. They work as a team and if you ask for something from your server, she will telepathically tell the other servers and whatever you need just shows up instantly. It’s amazing! Even the floor manager was delivering drinks from the bar in his three piece suit. Now, to the food. Everything was perfectly prepared. Not a single bad bite. Started with deviled eggs and rock shrimp. Both were a flavorful explosion. Had the French dip sandwich. The bread was light and chewy. The beef melted in my mouth. The au jus was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Of course, we finished with the carrot cake, which was huge but light and not terribly filling. It wasn’t overly sweet and cut perfectly with my fork. To summarize, it was the most perfect dining experience with amazing service, the perfect ambience and food that cannot be duplicated anywhere else. I cannot wait to return to try other menu options. Also, you must make reservations during peak hours or your wait will be over an hour. I had reservations for 6pm. Showed up at 5:54 and was seated by 6:02. Other folks who had just walked up were quoted a 70 minute waiting time.
Nice place. Great food! Dress and behavior code! Love it!
A close friend of mine took my husband and me here for our 30th wedding anniversary, and it felt magical. The margarita was super yummy, as well as the appetizers and meals. I would highly recommend going here because of the smbiance, service, and food.
What can you say! This place never disappoints- they've got a tight menu and a great friendly staff and wonderful cocktails. It's always a win-win. Make sure you book ahead though
We had been here before for dinner, this time for lunch the experience highlighted the food colors...the freshness, the succulent portions. Flavors through the eyes, pricey yes and really really must have food. I had the ahi tuna salad, my partner had the Asian salad, my in law s shared the amazing carnitas sandwich.. great food, great service...
Excellent food and service. Great place to eat out and unwind. In my opinion, if you are in the area, this is the best of the best when it comes to OC restaurants. It is the cleanest and most consistent when it comes to excellent customer service and food quality. It really doesn't get better than this. I dare you to give it a try and experience what a restaurant is all about.
One of my favorite spots to dine in Orange County! Always busy! Great food and drinks and just a good vibes all around. Appetizer of choice: Dip Duo is my go to Food: Torn between the Fried Chicken Sandwich or Cheeseburger You can try to book online otherwise expect to have a wait if you plan to walk in.
One of my go-to’s in Orange County. Always high quality food and exceptional service. The menu is full of new American style options all cooked to perfection each time. I also love their team service approach. Each server and assistant was warm, friendly and seemingly always available and attentive. Job well done!
Service was great and attentive, calm and not invasive. I loved the ambiance Food portions however were so miniscule.I was shocked to see how small the steak was and the salad was a few leaves and barely 4 oz ahi. For somewhere upscale I expected a little more. Almost 100$ bucks and left hungry.
Understated gem in the oasis of fashion island. This upscale but casual eatery makes me feel like I’m on vacation every time I visit. The staff is attentive and polished and the food is consistently fresh and delicious. In order to ensure the highest levels of taste and freshness they offer a limited menu but what they do offer is stellar. The salad pictured is the Asian noodle chicken salad. It’s a combination of fresh greens, rotisserie chicken and a slightly sweet Asian dressing.
We stay at the bar area and just ordered drinks and appetizers. - The service was great! - Didnt like the old fashion, it tasted waterly, they didn't charge us, what was really nice. - The Margarita was really good - I ordered one of the lagers on tap and was really tasty - The Devil Eggs are delicious!
Wow! I loved this place had the chicken sandwich and creamed corn 😍 ! As an app we had the dip duo (Im Mexican so u know im picky with guac … lets be real ) and it was perfect and the queso just grows on u ! Had the carrot cake as dessert and it didn’t miss 😋! Service was top tier they wete so attentive 😍
I can’t believe I have not been here before in all my years visiting! Enjoyed an absolutely delicious Newporter Salad. It was expertly dressed and loved that everything in this salad was already cut to perfect proportions to eat! Such a rare find! It was a perfect evening and just the right amount of food; then off to GOTG3! Highly recommend!
Absolute perfection. We drive 1 1/2 to 2 hours just to come for their amazing food and service not to mention fabulous ambience. Spot on every single time. We are honor bar Montecito die hards... I must say R+D Newport has them up a good notch. Worth the drive and then a nice stroll in Fashion Island great shopping. The Managment for sure amplifies their excellence. Special shout out to Holly thank you for your amazing hospitality.
Service was spectacular! Food was scrumptious! Atmosphere fantastic! We ordered the carnitas sandwich and the French dip. Both sandwiches were served a la carte. We also ordered an order a fries with spicy mayo to share. Fries were fresh and crispy and delicious with their seasoning blend and dipped in the spicy mayo. The French dip was plentiful and with horseradish and au jus it was super yummy. The carnitas sandwich was probably the most balanced and tasty sandwich I have had in a long time. The sauce that comes with it is to die for. I highly recommend R+D Kitchen. You will not be disappointed. I am sorry I didn't take any pictures this time.
My fiancé and I had a wonderful experience at R&D Kitchen for a date night. Shortly after being seated on the patio, it started raining. The team promptly offered to move us to a table inside which was a small touch that made us feel well taken care of. The ambience inside is very nice, and like other Hillstone restaurants, the quality is consistently top tier. We enjoyed the pine room salad + sandwiches we tried, and look forward to coming back to try more of the menu!
booked a reservation on a busy night yet the service was still excellent! I asked for tartar sauce and spicy mayo and they delivered!! The french fries were so crispy, which I like. I ordered the chicken meatballs and spaghetti and it was delectable. My dad ordered the steak and asked for medium well but it was medium. However they had no problem of recooking the steak for him. Definitely bringing my family back!!
Once again, my wife and I sat at the bar for a burger and their famous chicken sandwich. Very busy for around 4:30pm but, we were served quickly and had a great meal. Atmosphere was great and chill with a good vibe. Great way to start the night. Only suggestion is that they have a large ice cube to work a little better with some bourbons/whiskeys.
A place that is always moving, the staff are smiling and welcoming, and even when you are standing by waiting for a table you are treated like a welcom guest. They know the balance between asking if you need anything and giving your table time to talk where you never feel rushed but also never ignored. I have only ever been there for Lunch. But I have never had a bad meal nor ever had a bad experience. Can't go wrong with deviled eggs, lamb sandwich, and roasted peppers.
This is one of our favorite restaurants in our community the food is always amazing and consistent as is the service. We are logos and even though it is frequented by many people visiting Newport Beach and Fashion Island, we love to make this our afternoon date after a shopping outing. The manager Cal is especially wonderful as he is always attentive to any of our needs and greets us always when we are there. If you want excellent food, and fantastic service we highly recommend R&D.
We stopped by R+D Kitchen at Fashion Island after a movie, and it was such a great dining experience! Even though it was a busy evening and there were nine of us, the manager was incredibly kind and made sure we were comfortably seated — really appreciated that level of hospitality. The food was excellent all around. We ordered a mix of sliders, burgers, and a steak plate — everything was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The Cheeseburger was juicy with a nice smoky char and fresh toppings, while the Steak Plate was tender and beautifully seasoned. The Sliders were a favorite at our table — small in size but big in flavor! There’s a great variety of sandwiches and entrées on the menu, and everything that came out looked amazing. The atmosphere was classy yet relaxed, perfect for winding down after a movie. I’ll definitely be coming back to try more dishes!
Went in for a late lunch. I had the cheeseburger and my wife had the omelet. The burger was juicy while the omelet was fluffy. The fact that neither came with fries was a plus for us as we were trying to stay a bit healthy. But this could be an issue for some people. That said, the highlight of the meal was the carrot cake. It is one of the best I've ever had. Nice and moist without being overly sweet. Would definitely suggest trying the carrot cake.
This restaurant’s appeal to busy professionals lies in its simple menu, expertly executed dishes, and friendly and efficient staff. The starchy white linen napkin provided with the flatware is particularly noteworthy, featuring a button hole at the top corner that can be secured to a button-down shirt to minimize food stains. This place was the perfect location for a business lunch with my financial advisor last Friday. I recall bringing out-of-town friends here when the restaurant first opened approximately 20 years ago under the name Cafe R&D and serving the best shoestring fries in the area. To be nostalgic, I began with the fries, which have since been upgraded to a thicker cut but still served warm and remain delicious. For entrée, I opted for the pan-fried petrale sole, accompanied by a side of coleslaw and tartar sauce. The captivating buttery aroma as the dish was brought to the table was irresistible, and the delicate filet melted in my mouth. The slaw provided a refreshing crunch and a harmonious blend of tangy, sweet, and creamy flavors. The restaurant’s house-made sauces are all expertly crafted, and the tartar sauce was no exception. Carrot cake served as dessert, tasting scrumptious and freshly baked/frosted. Despite its bustling atmosphere, the staff managed their tasks flawlessly, ensuring a smooth flow from the hostess to the drink server and the waitress. Their attentive service, focused on detail, created an exceptional dining experience and made us feel we were the only ones there. Without hesitation, I would rate this restaurant five stars.
I had an excellent dinner here! Everything from start to finish was on point. The atmosphere was lively but still comfortable, and our server kept drinks filled and checked on us just the right amount. The food was outstanding — the salmon was perfectly cooked with a crisp sear on the outside and tender, flaky inside. The broccolini was fresh and flavorful, and the lemon wedge added the perfect brightness. We also tried the lettuce-wrapped noodle salad, which was colorful, fresh, and packed with flavor and crunch. The steak and fries were also a hit at our table — juicy, cooked just right, with a tasty sauce and crisp fries. Presentation, portion sizes, and flavors were all impressive. Drinks were cold and well made, and we loved the option of classic glass-bottled sodas alongside cocktails. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for consistently good food, great service, and a welcoming vibe!
Let me start with Samantha our server, "AWESOME"!!! The starter was the lemon drops Martini - yum! And they will bring you a new glass just to keep it chilled if you are a slow drinker. The food was also fresh and flavorful! And busy so make a RSVP Even though walk-ins are available, But you're going to wait.......
Oh my gosh, I love R+D Kitchen! The vibe is totally upscale but still so cozy and welcoming—like you can tell it’s a special spot, but you feel right at home. The place is just gorgeous and has this cool, interesting charm to it. And the service? Seriously, second to none. I ordered the Pine Room Salad (which was super fresh and tasty), but I had no idea there were onions on it. When I mentioned it, they immediately offered to remake it, no questions asked. So sweet! And honestly, the food was fantastic, but the carrot cake is hands down, the best I’ve ever had. You have to try it!
One of the best burgers I have had. In my top 5! Deviled eggs were outstanding and my carrot cake dessert was also one of the best I have had. Soft, moist and perfect blend of spices and cream cheese. Service was outstanding. Very friendly and always attentive. The fries were good but my least favorite part of the meal. If you want an amazing burger, look no further. Can’t wait to come back and try other menu items!
Enjoyed eating at R&D Kitchen. The food is always good here. I came here with my girlfriend for lunch. The servers was friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant likes accommodating small parties, table for 2 easily. There is always a crowd here. I ordered the Mediterranean Seared Tuna Salad which was fresh with wonderful flavors. Loved the salad too with beautiful presentation of colorful vegetables.
Hands Down our favorite restaurant. Everything we have tried is delicious. This is the only place that I ever eat a hamburger. The quality of the beef is excellent. It’s perfectly cooked and there’s a perfect mix of lettuce, onions ( grilled onions too) tomato and dressing. The hickory sauce takes it over the top. Definitely order the fries ! They are crispy and sliced thinly so you don’t feel so guilty eating them. The seasoning adds a nice touch. We ordered the carrot cake as a treat and it was the best ever. Creamy icing and the cake was great. As a side dish the deviled eggs (3) were delicious - perfect mix of seasoning and great presentation We sat on the bar and loved it. Tiffany was our waitress and she was so cordial and knowledgeable with a big smile. It’s always busy because of the great experience and food. Try to come at off times and the wait won’t be so long. Either way- it’s worth the wait.
My family and I came here for dinner after shopping at Fashion Island. We called ahead for a reservation at 9pm with no problem and were seated quickly. The food was great and flavorful. We ordered the tartare (pictured) and the cheeseburger and the french dip sandwich. The ambiance is nice and we chose to be seated on the patio which we enjoyed. However the layout of the restaurant is a little confusing since it is dark and busy, so little kids and strollers be warned.
They have a very interesting and short menu selection, which they re-invent again and again. Classic American style with boot sittings. Very friendly, correct and styled staff. ---------------------------------- My star rating legend: Excellent / Exceptional ☆☆☆☆☆ Very good / Special ☆☆☆☆ Above-Average ☆☆☆ Below-Average ☆☆ Something is wrong!? ☆ ----------------------------------
Lax dress code enforcement nowadays. Also, they have a loose definition of "Reservation."
Another great quick dinner at our fam favorite R&D in fashion island. We were seated outside promptly after arrival. The menu has slightly changed. We ordered the usual cheeseburger which is a fan favorite and the roast beef au jus. We also ordered for the first time the carnitas sandwich which was not a hit with our fam. It just doesn’t have the same flavors as the chicken sandwich or the cheeseburger. I also got one of their daily specials which was the tuna salad sandwich which came of a toasted white sandwich bread. We all got the first and their coleslaw as sides. Tuna salad was a bit too much on the sweet side and didn’t have a good crunch. The food tonight was 4 stars and the service from MicaelAnn was a 5 star. Will stick to the chicken sandwich next time. Prices seem to have stabilized after the big jump over the last couple of years. Cheeseburger is $21.
R+D kitchen is a real upscale restaurant located in the Fashion Island center of Newport Beach. Get there early because it is very popular and gets full. We were at the bar and had some very delicious cocktails. Good looking crowd and friendly staff. The bartender was very nice and she is proficient at her craft cocktails. It was a fun time for all.
R&D Kitchen in Newport Beach consistently echoes the esteemed standards of its sister restaurant, Houston’s, offering an experience of reliable quality. My choice, the tuna tartare, was excellently crafted, showcasing the freshness and finesse one would expect from such a reputable establishment. However, a note on the dining etiquette here: while the restaurant maintains an upscale vibe, it enforces a policy requiring men to remove their hats at the bar, though women are permitted to wear theirs without issue. Given the restaurant’s location within a mall and the modern push for equal rights, this rule seems somewhat antiquated and unnecessarily gender-specific. In an era where equality is increasingly championed, such policies may benefit from a refresh to align with contemporary standards of fairness and inclusivity. Despite this, R&D Kitchen remains a solid choice, offering great food and a pleasant atmosphere. It’s a reliable spot for anyone looking to enjoy a meal in Newport Beach, though a little modernization in policy could potentially enhance the experience for all patrons.
I love the food here. The place is not that big, that's why there is a long line. Food is marvelous. Ask for the server to sit at the pato. Open space makes a better dining experience . Ordered the French Dip sandwich with mimosa... so good!! Recommended **Checkout Insta: @mrakusuma for more recommended places to eat**
My first time having dinner at this place. They have high quality food. We ordered the chicken sandwich and the grilled chicken salad. Love their balsamic vinaigrette sauce. Thick rich and nice pair with the argula and kale salad that I ordered. Ordered a margarita as well. Food is delicious. Our waitress is friendly. But a bit pricey though. However it's inside Fashion Island so it's excepted to be $$. Will come back for other menu items
R&D was an interesting take on American cuisine. At first, the menu seemed all over the place with no clear theme, but after seeing its conforto food meets Californian with a modern twist it made a bit more sense. We ordered a kale panzanella which was disappointing. It was NOT what a panzanella should be. It was just kale with oil-soaked croutons and a bit of parmesan cheese. It tasted ok, way too oily, and they made kale taste good which is difficult enough with its unique taste, but it’s not a panzanella salad that famously has at least tomatoes, onions, basil, and bread. We also ordered a French dip au jus sandwich and one daily special sandwich that was Carnitas. At first I was hesitant with the carnitas sandwich because it looked like pork with the same mix of kale salad. It was the same mix. However, the sauces and the flavors combined really well. The only critique was that the cheese was cold and not even warm or melted, which wasn’t great. The French dip au jus was good. The meat was tender and had an amazing taste. However, I think they might have slipped a bit too much salt in the dip that day. The service was great and our server was really nice and lovely! It was full, but we were able to be seated at lunchtime in about 30 mins which is good for a pretty full restaurant. Overall it’s a good lunch spot. However it may be a bit hyped perhaps.
My Wife and I enjoyed dinner outside, after I was asked to take my hat off inside. No issue there. This just tells me that they are targeting a specific clientele. Patio seating with hats is fine, so we sat outside. Tables outside are close to eachother and I say that simply becuase a group of 4 next to us blatantly asked their server while pointing at me in, "there is a uniform policy right, because he's wearing a hat". Additionally being able to hear the entire conversation made me uncomfortable and i just wanted to get out of there. It was clear to me, that wearing a hat here is not the vibe. Food was great. Our server was sweet. I had a burger and fries to go with my hat. 🧢 seemed suitable. Lol. Not sure about coming back though.
Strongly recommend their Lamb Sandwich, you won't taste the typical lamb smell, but you will have the most tender lamb ever, plus the red pepper and spinach 😋, what a nice and unique sandwich 🥪. Will also recommend their Devil Eggs, rich while refreshing. But not so impressed by their salad, particularly, we ordered their Newporter Salad and Mediterranean Salad, turned out to be the same dish, just they serve grilled tuna along with the Mediterranean one.
R+D Kitchen at Fashion Island is always a solid pick. I usually stop by on Fridays just for their amazing lamb sandwich, but this time I tried one of their salads with an Arnold Palmer while sitting at the bar. The salad was fresh and flavorful, and the drink hit the spot. The bar area had a great vibe, everyone around was friendly, and the staff were attentive and genuinely caring. Service is consistent, and the food is always high quality. Definitely a favorite, though I do miss that lamb sandwich when it’s not Friday!
The wait was super long I told them I was okie with the bar yet a group of 3 that came after me was seated after me. Extra long wait for my food. Hillstone group is great this location Yesterday for lunch was questionable
We always love hillstone, but the hostess Holly was extremely rude and didn’t handle seating and wait times in the amazing usual hillstone fashion. Pretty disappointed.
One of the reasons we came here was because from their website, it looked like it would be quite nice to dine there as it sounds quite formal, but not too pricey, and sophisticated based on all the things in their dining guidelines. They suggest the place isn't good if you have kids, they say not to let your cellphones ring due to courtesy to other patrons, they give you a guideline of even how they want you to dress. So we thought this might make a nice change from the hustle and bustle restaurants where it's so loud and rushed and like a big chain restaurant. Well ... NONE of that above is true; it's loud, it's not posh, it's quite casual, and if your cell IS to ring, I doubt anyone could even hear it, because of the noise in there. The boothes all circulate around the bar (the same interior as Banderas) and it's like a slightly fancier bar restaurant. In that respect, yes, it was disappointing. The menu is not overly extensive, but there are some good items on it. One thing they do, which is something I hate, is if you order the cheeseburger, you need to order the fries separately and then that becomes pricey. But ... the food at least was reasonably nice. The burger was so big that I HAD to eat it with a knife and fork. I mean, I have a big mouth (apparently), but even I couldn't get mine around that. The fries came out less than warm, and the waitress didn't really care about that when she cleared our plates away. I ordered a Mai Tai, which took a while to come. When it did, it was BEYOND strong. I could barely even sip on it. I then ordered a coke, and they're not refillable (considering this is a bar restaurant, you'd think coke on tap would be something so easily provided). The hostess was the one who came with our bill to apologise for the fries not being hot, but that was before we were even asked if we'd like to order dessert (maybe dessert wasn't on the menu that night). I think a lot of restaurants do themselves a disservice when they fail to "up sell" and ask patrons if they are finished before just dumping the bill on the table. Bad customer service. Basically this is my opinion ... If you are wanting a casual dinner without fine dining, there's nothing wrong with eating here. It's exactly that. But they aren't as formal/posh as they make out on their website, which in a way is kind of false advertising, yet it seems to work for them as they were really busy. But ultimately, it's just like your average, run of the mill chain restaurant, and there's nothing that really sets them apart. Nice food, and it's great after being out shopping (we were at the Newport Beach location at Fashion Island). If you want casual, quick and loud, you got it. If you're looking for more, keep looking.
Went in for my first time today and the restaurant is so beautiful! The window seating was amazing and I loved that the server would put the window down for you so you ge the nice breeze. Service was amazing and everyone was so nice. The only con- I wish the menu listed ALL the Ingredients. I ordered the cheeseburger and it showed the basics- lettuce, tomato, onion, cheddar, and a homemade bun. I asked for no onion and asked it add pickles which the server told me they were already in there, so perfect! The burger came and was nicely assembled. However there was some kind of Mayo on there along with a diced onion on the bottom. Had it been listed in the menu i would have asked for no sauce. I scraped off what I could but the flavor just wasn’t doing it. Our server asked how things were and I didn’t want to complain so I just said great 😊. When she came by later to see that I didn’t really eat it, she asked if I wanted to take it home and I politely declined and said that won’t be necessary. I didn’t want to complain because service was amazing and I was perfectly okay with paying for service alone. When she returned with our check she said she took off the burger, which was such a nice gesture even though I was willing to pay for it. The rest of the party loved the food! I will definitely return and try something I normally get like steak only because that service was truly amazing.
Simple menu for food. Appears popular with activity around the bar. Service was good, attentive and friendly. Choices for higher end bourbons slim, Prices on the higher side. Location good, especially when you need a break from shopping!
Very disappointed at my business lunch, Petrale Sole was an unimpressive preparation and portion. Way overpriced too
If I could give zero stars, I would. Went here for my boyfriend’s birthday, expecting a good night, but instead, we got outright insulted. They refused to serve us drinks for no good reason. The staff were dismissive, and the attitude was beyond rude. On a special occasion, you’d expect some decent service, but this place felt cheap in every sense. Save your money and go somewhere that treats customers with respect. Absolutely unacceptable.
This was my first trip to Fashion Island and R+D. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon. I left my name with the hostess at the front door. At the time I was unaware of the dress code of no hats so when I was walked to my table, the same hostess asked me if I would kindly remove mine, and which I did promptly. Shortly, following the same, hostess sat multiple guests, but did not pull them aside to tell them to kindly remove their hats. Instead, they were able to enjoy their experience without feeling judged (like my date and I were). I did inform an employee on my way out, but was disgusted with the experience in its entirety. Apparently, equality is not practiced at this establishment. While I was looking forward to an afternoon brunch, based off of recommendation to this location, instead I felt judged and my company felt the same way.
Horrible service, came here for my birthday on 3/17/25 with a family of 5, been here many times but this will be my last visit. First thing they did was asked my brother to take off his hat while many others in the restaurant had hats on, including other men, I guess this doesn't apply to everyone, just people they see fit. Next, WE CALLED 5 HOURS IN ADVANCE to ask if we could bring a couple bottles of wine, we also let them know that we would open it to air it out before getting there but it would still be full with the cork, the manager said "no problem". Once we got there that was not the case, we were not allowed to. They refused to charge us the cork fee and give us wine glasses, they refused to let us drink our wine, they refused to bring a manager over to our table when we asked for one 4 times. Then proceeded to let us sit there for 15 minutes before coming to take our order. By the way, THE MANAGER NEVER CAME TO OUR TABLE. Walked up to have a conversation with some of the employees and they were all standing around talking about our table, very rude, but still no manager anywhere in sight. They were very rude from start to finish and I HAVE NEVER HAS SUCH A HOSTILE EXPERIENCE, LET ALONE FOR MY BIRTHDAY. THANKS R + D! Avoid this place if you want a peaceful dine in experience.
Terrible café with awful service. They didn’t even let me in for lunch just because I was wearing a cap and a short-sleeved shirt. And it’s not even a proper restaurant — just a regular café serving sandwiches and burgers. I do not recommend visiting.
My review is going to start with a 1 star because we never had a chance to order food. The hostess was horrible. Service was horrible … we were with our friends from North Carolina and it was our anniversary and our one year-old daughter. They took away the sugar packets because they said that they were for guests after our daughter had played with a few. We will never return this place was so pretentious. Honestly too upset to say anything else.
I had a reservation for Saturday, the day after Black Friday. I brought a cake to celebrate a birthday after dinner, but Zoey in a mean way told us we weren’t allowed to do that. We’ve been regular customers for five years, so this was disappointing. We ended up going to Red O instead, and their service and management were much better.
Came to eat with 6 people and they only have tables for 5 or less and instead of trying to figure a way to make it work they simply were rude and repeated that they only have 5 or less like we didn't speak English and couldn't understand her. The older Blonde lady shouldn't be working there and greeting people will definitely let my social network know about this experience.
Horrible service and questionable procedures. No fries to go policy which is ridiculous as it’s an upgraded Red Robin that isn’t actually concerned about quality as they state.. Tried to place a take out order over the phone and they said no you have to come in person to place the order. I did and placed a $200 order with the bar for which I paid upfront. I then proceeded to stand by the entrance and the bar. I watched an order come up but didn’t want to call it out as the 2 bartenders appears smart enough to identity that the take out order is for the only girl standing right by them waiting. However instead my order sat by the register for an additional 20 min until I went up to ask if it was my order to which the nonchalantly when yeah. If you are not over the age of 45 and white they will essentially ignore you.
This restaurant does not accommodate parties larger than five, and worse, they don’t even try. Despite empty tables and no rush, there was zero effort to help our group. Hospitality matters just as much as food, and unfortunately that was completely lacking here. I wouldn’t recommend this place for families or group dining.
Food was really great. The service was not. Someone in my group was asked to take off their beanie which was fine until I noticed beanies and hats on others. Guess the rules don't apply to everyone. Drinks were not filled and our waitress was cold and short. She didn't even allow me to finish ordering before she cut me off. We had to ask for silverware. I don't really understand the hype.
Absolutely the most undesirable of any Hillstone restaurant! The help has an attitude! I’m the biggest Hillstone restaurant fan in the world but the help here sucks! It may be one of your top sales stores but the help sucks! The most uptight female bartenders I’ve ever incurred! My least favorite Hillstone restaurant in the country! Lighten up! Consistently the worst Hillstone restaurant!
