This is what I was looking for! Super clean and mellow ambiance. Simple decor. Fantastic drinks. Comfy, velvety chairs. You can actually converse with your friends or date. Definitely coming back. Most bars in Oakland seem to have a club vibe which I'm not fond of - it's so refreshing to find a bar like this!

Five stars for Night Heron! This place is my go-to spot in Oakland because of the amazing atmosphere, cocktails and staff. Mars, Dani and Greg are great bartenders – they always remember my name and my usual cocktails. Plus, they're just lovely people to chat with and get to know. In my experience, Night Heron is a rare and special spot because of the amazing staff and vibe. I highly recommend you check out Night Heron.

This was super fun! Came with a bunch of friends. Atmosphere was chill and the place fortunately wasn't crowded. Mixed drinks were good, beer, wine, whiskey-drinks for everyone. Their partnership with the Japanese restaurant next door really cinches the 5 stars though, the 20$ bento was delicious!

I recently reserved the Partial Lounge at the Night Heron for a surprise birthday party. This was the PERFECT place for my event. Everyone that attended loved the Night Heron. This place is perfect for an event. The partial lounge area is welcoming, seats are very comfortable, great open space to move around and mingle in, everyone can hear each other comfortably, drinks were DELICIOUS, bartenders were SO NICE, and food was very tasty. The decor of the place is also really modern and nice. We will be coming here often. Thank you to the kind owner of the Night Heron who helped me with my reservation.

Popped in for a cocktail during happy hour. GREAT happy hour drink options. Also enjoyed some classic cocktails. The bartended was extremely friendly and was appropriately attentive, leaving us to enjoy our small group and making sure we had what we needed. The space was cool and likely even better at night when the party gets started. We'll be back.

This place was a true hidden gem! I don't drink alcohol so cannot speak to the cocktails but the no-ABV drink I got (Soweto) was a good mix of herbal and refreshing tart. Music was playing at the right volume so this would be perfect if you're looking to spend time with a group of friends and actually having conversations over drinks. Space felt super clean (with plenty of bathrooms), spacious, and safe. The staff were extremely kind and let us enjoy our time until closing.

I hosted my bday party here. Cory was super communicative and accommodating. They made a custom cocktail menu for my guests and the private area looked super cute! Great vibes. It was also really affordable and in a great location. Great staff and delicious cocktails. Highly recommend!

We went to a place (bad service, so we left) right before stumbling upon this amazing hidden gem to us. Love, love, love this place. The bartender, was welcoming and helpful. Recommend we grab the last booth and we had an amazing time.

this place is called "night heron" after nycticorax nycticorax, the iconic pelecaniform that by now is surely well-known as the official bird of the city of oakland. this choice in name is, i would theorize, because the owners of the establishment want you to believe that it is some kind of timeless local institution. real ones know that the black-crowned night heron was not even declared oakland's official bird until 2019. (it does deserve this designation, if anyone was wondering — they're pretty cool little guys — but that's neither here nor there.) indeed, night heron (the bar) has actually only been here since 2023, and i have an unfortunate distrust of newer businesses. i am reluctant to admit just how good the cocktails are, but, dear reader, my commitment to integrity compels me: they're yummy. everything i have tried so far is both inventive and hella drinkable, i am afraid. the cost is also not out of control for what you're getting, and proximity to bart makes this a really nice place to close out a night before heading home. the fact they have little games lying around for you to play is weird and dumb, but i think i like it. i think weird and dumb can be good. i DO want to sip on a moderately fancy drink while playing connect four, actually, and i'm glad you asked. in fact, i think they should add more games; this bar would benefit from fully embracing that aspect of its character. the aesthetic direction has grown on me — the first time i came in here, i kind of just straight up didn't like it. i felt like it was too bright and incoherently colorful. but the more i have thought about "weird and dumb" as an aspirational descriptor, the more i've decided i'm into it. i do like color, and being able to see the person you're with is nice, it turns out. over time, i believe this place could work on dialing up its maximalist leanings and genuinely become the local fixture it seems to want to be.

Atmosphere top tier but service was awful and not welcoming. Grab an over priced cocktail somewhere else.

Went to a party here. The bartender was completely inexperienced and seemed to be under the influence of something. She was slower than slow. She kept leaving the bar to go get things taking even longer to make drinks. She kept saying that she was not a bartender. After waiting forever for the drinks they were terrible and expensive. A complete waste of money. We could barely hear the music then the DJ left early. There was a $500 minimum for a horrible experience.

Wanted a nice well made cocktail or two before a show at the Fox. Sat at the bar for 15 minutes watching them serve everyone but me - so I left. Seemed to make some creative cocktails for everyone but me. Weird. Was in a good mood when I entered - not so much 15 min later. I’m not a person who begs bartenders for service. If they don’t want my business - their loss.
