Opinions de Sushi to go Oakland
We visited this restaurant for dinner on a Monday evening. It's a small and bustling place, so I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. Due to the restaurant's size, the seating, including both tables and the bar, was a bit tight and noisy. We ordered hand rolls, a la carte nigiris, and sashimi. All of them exceeded our expectations.
Absolutely amazing nigiri. Wish there was one near us in NJ! Four of us came in on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch and there was no wait. We all took advantage of their nigiri special and when our food arrived, we were obsessed! Beautiful plating and the fish looked so fresh. I loved ALL of the nigiris. For the rest of the day, my husband and I would periodically and randomly think back on Mujiri and wish we could eat more! I think the only thing that stuck out to me was that they don’t have miso soup on the menu but their yuzu cheesecake made up for it. The cheesecake slice would probably be small for some people but for us, it was perfect. We also had the hojicha tea which came with unlimited refills. Parking was relatively easy to find. Highly recommend for an affordable but high quality sushi experience!
I’ve only gotten their takeout nigiri set and it’s an easy 5/5 from me. It’s $25 and you can pick the nigiri you want. I usually order online and it’s ready in 15-20 minutes. A lot of fish are included in the $25, even toro, and they have other fish that are add-ons to the $25 price. Pictured is all pieces that are included in the $25.
Absolutely delicious! Pictured is 2 nigiri combos (7 pieces plus maki roll each), 3 nigiris a la carte (2 pieces each) and the mini handrolls appetizer. Everything was very tasty, fresh is very fish, and the rice is the best. The restaurant is very small, seats maybe 20 people total - 10 dining and 10 at the sushi bar. Highly recommend!
Was lucky enough to eat outdoors here on a Saturday. Seating is limited to the sushi bar indoors and one or two tables outside. We arrived right around opening and ordered the Sushi Nigiri set. You can let the chefs decide the order or pick your own. We let the chefs decide the first time and then each ordered another set with some of our favorites and ones we hadn’t tried. The toro and trout really stood. The belt fish had a nice smokey flavor from being torched. All the pieces were seasoned individually so no need for soy sauce. This place does get busy with takeout orders but I think that’s an indication of how good the food is. It’s worth the wait.
Beautiful and delicious small sushi restaurant. Everything on the menu is delicious, you can never go wrong over ordering. You feel like a guest of the restaurant the way they serve and take care of you. Great place for a date or special occasion. Definitely get a reservation, there is a limited number of group tables.
We sat right at opening so naturally we opted for the bar table. I love smelling that aroma whenever they torch some fish. The best selling point for this restaurant is the simple menu and a choose your own adventure approach. The nigiri combo starts at $25 and comes with maki roll. Options like scallops and toro aren’t considered extra like uni. They also have some uncommon options like flying fish, Arctic char, beakfish, and more. The presentation for both the nigiri combos and sashimi omakase are pleasant. The quality was very noticeably fresh. The only con we found was the portion of the fish. They were thinly sliced than other places we’ve tried. This was more evident with the sashimi we ordered. I’d still recommend anyone in the area to come eat here!
This is the real deal. Enjoying this is an appreciation of craft. The selection of fish is amazing, including a few selections I'd never heard of, but unlike other places they don't rely solely on the fish for flavor. Each piece (and the rice! And the soy sauce!) have nuance and depth and great combinations of flavor. In particular they don't skimp on the vegetarian maki - it was just as good as any fish option.
Order from here. And if you can…order takeout. The presentation of the takeout sushi is next level! It is not all about the presentation, the selection and quality is -in my opinion- undefeated in the East Bay. It rivals and even surpasses some of the best sushi I have had in places like LA, SF and NYC. It is pricey and the portions is small but that’s to be expected with a place like this. 10/10 would recommend. (Cat not included)
I saw an article about Mujiri in my newsfeed and decided to drop in for the $25 nigiri combo. Parking was easy on the side of San Pablo Ave. I was pleasantly surprised by the calm, welcoming atmosphere with nice music. Staffing included two sushi chefs one hostess, and one waitress. A qr code for their daily menu was available to scan, which brought up a small, but enticing menu. I ordered the seaweed salad and chefs choice nigiri combo, and chose to add 1 beak fish since I have never tried it before. The salad was presented first. It was delicious, with citrus and sesame notes. As I finished my glass or water, the the hostess provided a refill within 5 seconds. She was on her game, which is something I appreciate when dining out. The nigiri was brought out next, and she let me know which fish were on my plate. I was delighted when I noticed nikiri sauce painted over the top of each selection... that's something you don't see at many sushi places and tells me I do not need to dip my nigiri in soy sauce and Wasabi. The nikiri application was subtle with a few small drops hitting the simple bamboo leaf on my wooden plate. Next to the nigiri was a 6 piece tuna roll. I started with the nigiri from right to left. I was so excited to dig in I accidentally ate the Toro nigiri before I snapped the photo in my review. It was soft and buttery, and the small dab of Wasabi in between the rice and fish was perfect. The roll came next. I decided to to dip it in a small amount of soy, with wasabi to add an extra kick. The hostess approached me and asked if I needed anything else, which I declined because the serving size was perfect. I paid my tapping my phone on a portable terminal and added a 25% tip, which I am happy to give when I receive 5 star service. I left full and happy. I found my new spot and will return again, plus will tell everyone I know about this amazing bay area gem. 💥🍣💥
An unassuming, yet thoughtful place to dine at. What feels an intentional decision to focus on great food and terrific service. A small place that seats just a couple dozen people (at most). They do a great job of focusing on the food which only adds to the experience. Our sashimi was so fresh and buttery. Each bite was better than the last. The staff was patient, understanding and friendly. A great dining experience. Can't wait to come back.
As someone who previously didn't care for sushi, I can confidently say Mujiri has completely changed my mind. The manager was extremely patient & went above and beyond to make sure I had a wonderful experience. Even with my limited sushi background, the chef catered to my tastes and nailed it with every roll that came out. I already can't wait to go back! Amazing food, even better people.
Mujiri is one of my favorite sushi places! It's a shame that the store is very small, so it's hard to dine in, so I usually just order to go or order for pick up. The quality is great for the price! I could eat this all day! They have different kind of fishes/dishes depending on their inventory, so I think that's quite cool.
Really delicious nigiri in a cute restaurant at an affordable price. I ordered the chefs choice set and was really impressed with the quality of the fish as well as the variety... These guys really give good value for money! One note I did have is that I thought the rice was too seasoned for my liking... While the seasoning tasted good it kind of took away from some of the flavors of the fish. My girlfriend and I also shared the spicy salmon roll and were pretty impressed with it as well! Overall I really liked this place and am excited to come back for another chef's choice set! Also, i would highly recommend making a reservation since seating can take a bit.
Love it. Much like many sushi places in Japan, they are a small restaurant. Wait was not too long and you can book a reservation online or walk up and get on the list. Quality is awesome. Price is a little higher than I would like but then again no worries. Awesome quality tasty sushi. I liked everything I had.
Fresh fish and reasonal price for nigiri set. Quivk and great spot when starving for sushi. I do not eat seasweed and the chef was able to accomodate my request.
absolutely stellar sushi. fast, fresh and great variety. unbelievable value for $25/nigiri combo. always busy, so i recommend dining early to make sure they don’t run out of what you want (and to beat the crowds!)
I’ve never had the chance to dine in at Mujiri, but I’ve ordered their omakase set for takeout multiple times. and it never disappoints. The selection of fish is always incredibly fresh, and the quality is consistently top-notch. What really stands out is the sushi rice perfectly seasoned with just the right balance of umami, not too sour and not too plain. Even in a takeout box, everything is thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. Highly recommend if you’re looking for high-quality sushi at home.
This place was amazing. Don't think of your typical Japanese American rolls. Think simple, elegant, and flavorful, almost decadent. We ordered the specials that day, plus some extra rice, japanese uni, and the nigiri box. Everything was wonderful. Most things do not need any extra seasoning/sauce. The sear on the poke was so light, which made me really happy as i don't personally like cooked salmon, and it was seasoned so wonderfully. Tuna hand rolls were great. Tuna carpaccio melted in your mouth. I also recommend the Ume drink. Mmmmmm.
I’ve always ordered takeout from here and finally dined in person. Sushi is high quality, at unbelievably affordable prices. Their classic omakase set starts at $25 and comes with a maki roll and 7 nigiris of your choice. You can pay extra for premium cuts like toro or uni. I tried their seaweed salad, which is nothing like the standard artificially green seaweed salads you would get at a typical sushi restaurant, ton more texture and different textured of seaweed and kelp. We also shared their toro trio, and finished with the kinako mochi. Such a gem of a restaurant and will def try to be back for in person dining again. With everything we ordered which included premium cuts and additional pcs, we ended up only spending $170 total for 2, which is the typical pricing for one person at a sf omakase restaurant at similar quality.
My friends and I went to Mujiri on a whim and were completely blown away by their service and food. It's a very small restaurant, but thankfully, we were able to find a table when we got there. For $25, you can get the nigiri combo, which includes 7 pieces of nigiri and chef's choice of hosomaki (small sushi rolls). For the 7 pieces of nigiri, either you can go with chef's selection or pick your own 7 pieces of nigiri from the available options without repeting any nigiri. The small sushi rolls were okay, but every piece of nigiri that we got was really good. It was fresh and juicy. Each nigiri had a thick cut of the fish. My personal favorites were- hotate (Hokkaido scallop), kurodai (Black snapper), toro (Spain bluefin fatty tun). My friend also really liked their blue fish. You can also ask them to sear the fish if you like it that way. I also tried their Santa Barbara uni. It was decent (not the best I've had, but thankfully, it wasn't bitter or mushy). The nigiri combo was so good that we ended up ordering more nigiri from their a la carte menu. The service was great, too. Our server was very attentive and friendly. Honestly, this place is a hidden gem. This place beats some of the upscale omakase places where you will shell out a lot of money for mediocre food/sushi. Given how expensive sushi can be, it's understandable to be skeptical of cheap sushi, but don't sleep on this place.
I dropped by while in the area to try Mujiri for the first time, and it will definitely not be the last! I had the sashimi plate and I was totally blown away, it was so delicious! Lots of variety of fish, super high quality and beautifully prepared. Sat at the sushi bar solo, and loved everything about the restaurant and vibes!
High quality sashimi, good value, casual. Negitoro was a favorite. Sashimi and nigiri Omakase also great. Hotate consistently delicious. Parking was easy, small interior so it fills up fast. Not much on the menu for kids.
Excellent sushi. Do the nigiri combo and sashimi combo. Fish was ultra fresh, had a beautiful sheen, and rice had good texture and flavor. The black snapper nigiri was particularly good with some light torching. We’ll definitely be coming back again to pick out our favorites! And looking forward to bringing friends to this spot. Be sure to reserve as this tiny spot seems to always be right at capacity.
Update 02/14/24: Tried their special “premium nigiri combo” available during the week of valentines’ day. Price increases to $58 for the set, but the quality stays high. —————— Tried sashimi combo, nigiri combo, maki rolls as well as hand rolls. They are all amazingly fresh and tasty. Great price.
Mujiri has the best sushi I’ve ever had! I ordered the nigiri combo with toro, iwana, hamachi, kanpachi, salmon, hotate, and kurodai. The two smoked ones are AMAZING and are a must-try. The combo includes chefs choice hand roll, and I got salmon. They have limited seating inside, some bar-style and a few tables. Parking is a little tricky but Mujiri is totally worth it!
Very small spot. 3 tables and sushi bar. Make reservations. 7 nigiri for $25 and it comes with maki! If you drink a bit, it can add up as you add more pieces. But ohh well, treat yourself! Also, try the specials bc I heard it changes and the Yuzu sake. Definitely coming back.
Great sushi for bargain price! The rice on the nigiri is well season and the fish was spot on. $25 for nigiri takeout set and $35 for the sashimi set. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and will be going back for sure!

Amazing sushi - and an even better value. The chef’s choice nigiri is one of the best deals in the bay area. Plus, all the sushi is gluten free, and they have gluten free soy sauce.
TLDR: A gem. Really great value, fresh fish! But portion sizes are decreasing. I go to Mujiri about 1-3x a month, but have frequented Mujiri less recently. The nigiri and sashimi combos (the seared bites are the best!) are so delicious, fresh, and so worth it for the price. However, I’ve noticed that Mujiri is a little bit inconsistent and overall portion sizes are decreasing. Cuts of fish aren’t always as fresh, and the cuts of fish are sometimes really thin. Overall, the thickness and length of the sashimi and nigiri fish are a lot smaller consistently. Really great normally, but I fear quality is going down.
We ordered sashimi through delivery. It is a little over $40 including tax and delivery. The set has 16 pieces of sashimi, two of each 8 kinds. Overall, the sashimi is very fresh and tasty. I especially like the fresh scallop. For this price, I think it should include rice and miso soup.
Came here for a late lunch on a Friday afternoon at 1pm. The hostess was running around the whole time and she was clearly stressed; she greeted us and said it would be around 5 minutes, but we didn't get seated until 40 minutes later. The space is tiny. I stumbled upon it on an Instagram reel so I feel like the word is spreading about it. My partner and I were seated at a table inside. Luckily, we had plenty of time to look over the menu. The space smelled a bit fishy (like duh it's a sushi restaurant) but in like an older fish sort of way. The $25 nigiri combo is very affordable! It comes with 7 nigiri and a chef's choice maki. We also got a hot sake to share. I got yellowtail, arctic char, ocean trout, amberjack, black snapper, scallop, and fatty tuna. The seared ones were my favorite. The sweet, butter-like scallop comes in as a close second. Luckily for me, I didn't get salmon (although it's my favorite) because I wanted to try the more unique options--the maki ended up being salmon! The items were pre-seasoned with wasabi and soy sauce flavor so you don't need to worry about dipping. I liked that the sake cups are tiny so we can cheers more often. All in all the food was good but be prepared to possibly spend a good 2 hours or so here.
This is a great small Sushi spot. The service was great and the food delicious. I highly recommend making reservations.
Low ratio of waiters to customers which means long wait for everything. There were so many empty table but we waited 40 mins to get seated because the table couldn’t be clear fast enough. However once seated the waitress is attentive about filling up your tea (a plus after the long wait). The food is quick and good. Downside is there is not that many options apart from sushi and sashimi. So if you can’t do raw fish don’t come!

The review is strictly for take out service. No complaints about food, but a warning to make sure you check your bag before leaving the restaurant. They forgot the soy sauce! It’s first world problems to complain about missing soy sauce packets in the to go order, but after looking forward to having a picnic in a remote area with really nice sushi and finding out they forgot to include soy sauce , it was like a quiet rage inside. Oh well, at least they provided extra ginger at our request. Lessons learned: always check your take out bag before you leave the restaurant!
A fun little place for some sushi and tea. My friends and I walked in last Friday evening and had a few different rolls. They do not have a wide selection, but the sushi they do have is good. The best part of the meal was the hot brown tea they kept serving, which was very pleasant on a chilly night. The place is worth stopping by, but I probably won't return.
I enjoyed the combo for its variety and portion, but the fish quality wasn't too great. Also, I prefer plain sushi rice to soy sauced rice, so it was a little unfortunate. It's a nice, casual place for quick sushi bites. As a native Japanese, I thought the atmosphere was cute and cozy.

Had some nigiris. The fishes are not the best but okay, but the rice is horrible. Perhaps, the worst among all the sushis I've ever had. Rice is sticky and wet, and the stickiness remains in my mouth for the next hour. The taste of cheap vinegar from the rice was...Hope you improve on the shari. The price was $60 excluding the tips.
This place had been on my want-to-go list for a while, and I finally decided to give it a shot. I ordered their Nigiri Combo for pickup through DoorDash. You can choose up to 7 pieces of nigiris and 5 pieces of daily maki (chief's choice). I went with the Maguro (Big Eye Tuna), Hamachi (Yellow Tail), Salmon, Umi Masu (Ocean Trout), Kanpachi( Amberjack), Hotate (Hokkaido Scallop), Toro (Spain Bluefin Tuna. The fish was pretty fresh and delicious, and the price is quite reasonable. The only downside was the wait time. I placed my order at 1:30 PM and selected a 7:20 PM pick-up window. When I got to the restaurant, the order was not ready, and the staff told me it would be another 20 minutes. After 20 minutes of waiting, I came back to the restaurant, and the food was still not ready. I didn't get my food until around 7:50 PM. It made me wonder what the point is of scheduling a pick-up time when I ordered so far in advance.

We didnt even make it through the door. We were told the wait could be "up to an hour." We were there for over an hour and a half. There were tables of 2 seated in the middle of where there could be seating for 3, but it was almost like they just didnt want to bother with coming up with ways to seat us, instead opting to seat us at the one table available for 4. When asked about the wait, the host was very indignant about our concern. We walked away to potentially find a different restaurant and without informing us, they just canceled our reservation. Probably because they closed at 9 and it was already 845 we had shown up at 7. No matter how good the food is, the service is clearly severely lacking and there are surely other places that is more worth our business.
