Opinions de Uzen Japanese Cuisine Oakland
Cozy and calm. A small place next to Hudson coffee shop and to Oakland library on college ave. Authentic sushi complimented by efficient service makes this small sushi eat stands out.
This little hole in the wall on College Avenue in Oakland delivers top notch Sushi prepared by its expert Itamae. It is a small place designed for a discerning clientele and delivers either hand picked sushi on its list, with available variations such as quail egg added to its sea urchin hand rolls (very tasty). All of the sushi is very well presented and very fresh. It also has an omakase selection where you can yield to the chef to choose you the best choice he has available, prepared with exquisite care. It is a fun place to hang out, where you could either watch the chef do his work or find a table by the window and enjoy your sushi while people watching on the famous College Avenue. The service was great and the food was excellent.
We have been coming here for many years sporadically. It is my husbands favorite sushi place in Rockridge. The nigiri is big so I have to cut it in half but it fits as a bite if you have a big mouth. There is complimentary miso soup 🥣 and salad 🥗 with a creamy dressing. No spoon is provided so drink from the bowl There is a large hill of wasabi and ginger provided. Not sure who can eat that much wasabi but the extra ginger without asking for it is appreciated 😃 There is lunch service we have not attended before. The door is handicap accessible. The bathroom is in the back. Lots of menus and specials of the day along with beer wine and sakes. Metered street parking during certain hours or free neighborhood parking. Easy walk from the Rockridge BART.
I love everything I ordered! Sweet Shrimp/amaebi: so good! Squid: my favorite, love the flavor of the herb inside Uni: good! But it will be better if uni is from Japan Egg: pretty good! Unagi: so soft, totally different from what you get from supermarket Salmon: this is okay, not that special
Great food! Sat at bar and had fantastic service. Tonkatsu was perfectly crisp. Fish was very fresh and flavorful.
Their sushi is really fantastic. I believe this is the most authentic Japanese restaurant in this area.
Love the food here and especially love sushi specials. Pictured is A5 wagyu and a salmon asparagus roll.
Delicious sushi! My family comes here every other week because of the consistently great food, super fast service, and calm but happy atmosphere.

This place is a hidden gem! I've lived in the Bay Area my whole life and Uzen is serving some of the best sushi I've had here. Would recommend :)
It was great while it lasted. Tragic that it closed permanently. Probably one of the best sushi restaurants in the Bay Area never knew later on it was recomended for a Michelin star 5 years in a row.
I walked in with low expectations only because not that many people were in the restaurant. I was proven wrong quickly. The food was amazing and the service was great. I can't stand it when you get giant sushi rolls. These were small and very fresh. The dudes rolling the sushi were bout the business. Tashiko was a great waitress and she made our 10 year old picky eater feel special and went out of her way to make sure she had a good experience. The salad dressing is amazing , the nigiri and rolls were awesome as was everything else. Great little date spot. Highly recommend.
I like their sushi and ambiance. Pretty fresh fish and good tasting. I didn't try their other soups or others dishes. One star off for the menus not having prices. UPDATE: they seem to have taken care of their staff issue and their current staff is on point. ......... And one star off for the hit-or-miss waitstaff. One woman was wearing what looked like 5th grade sleepover pajamas and spent most of the time flirting with the other staff and ignoring customers, which ould make for good entertainment if only I had been able to place my order..
Wait staff was so wonderful, walking our large group through the different menu items and what to expect. The rolls weren't insanely large, instead wonderfully flavorful, and very high quality. Splitting the bill was a snap as we let them know ahead of time and there was no rush because we kept ordering more fish and Saki. This place is the best! Will definitely be back!!
My favorite sushi place! The fish is always super fresh, I've never had anything subpar here, and I've been coming here for many years. I also love the unagi, it's better than other sushi restaurants. The appetizers are great, and even the soup and salad are better than other places. I've seen the local organic salad mix being delivered before too (the dressing they make is bomb!), so they probably use other local produce whenever possible as well. The udon is also very good, it tastes clean, but is also perfectly seasoned and every ingredient is done well. The prices are good too! I wish I still lived near here so I could go all the time. Even in SF, I haven't found a place that is a good as Uzen that isn't crazy expensive. Definitely try the spicy scallop roll, I also love the 49er that we usually get with wild salmon.. but everything is great. The menu looks like there aren't many rolls, but they'll make you whatever you want! Just write it in at the bottom. If you're lucky you'll get the see the chef make a single thin sheet of daikon radish with a knife, it's impressive!! The only thing is the shittake mushroom stuffed with ground shrimp appetizer used to have a different recipe or something, I liked the old recipe better. I haven't gotten that one in a few years though, so maybe it's been changed back.
The restaurant was a wee bit small, yet the food made up for it. The tempura was the best tempura I've ever had anywhere. Service was timely. Lunch Special was great. 💫
Excellent as usual. Very fresh fish for sushi. Small neighborhood restaurant with a relaxed and intimate feel. Also love the little details such as the pretty individuality designed sake glasses.

Top-quality sushi, and a simple, minimalist setting. They do take reservations is you need, but usually you can get a table quickly except at peak times. Everything is delicious, and they will custom-make items for you as well. Specials are well worth exploring. Our go-to sushi solution.

Decent soba and tempura, but the kitchen needs to improve its sad, soggy chicken karaage. The order came very late, after we had finished everything else. My husband and I each had a bite and then sent it back and asked our server to remove the almost $9.00 charge for this order from the bill. It was a bad way to end a meal.

It was my all-time favorite Japanese restaurant. The Udon soup is a classic, but the portions have become smaller, and some sushi prices have gone up a lot (avocado-Unagi roll $12?). Service is inconsistent, and the place seems to be in decline.

I had an omakase of three people. The bill was well over $300.00. The food was terrible. Trust me, I've eaten sushi over 30 years, even in Japan. And this place ranks in the bottom of the bottom. Just don't do it. I wouldn't come back even if it is free and you stick a gun to my head.
