Coffee shop with a bookstore, what could be better? Great lattes, delicious baked goods, friendly prompt service, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, great location 10 minute walk to the beach, free street parking, AND an attached bookstore. Try this place. You won't be disappointed.
My daughter wanted to go here on are vacation. Wonderful coffee and great staff.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ BookWorks is an absolute gem in Pacific Grove! If you’re a fan of high-quality brews and a cozy atmosphere, this is your spot. I had the almond croissant, which was incredibly flaky and delicious, paired with a chai latte that was easily one of the best I’ve had—perfectly balanced and fantastic flavor. What really makes this place special for me is their connection to Santa Cruz Coffee and Aptos Coffee. Having previously worked at Aptos Coffee myself, stepping into BookWorks felt almost like coming home. You can really tell they value the same high standards and community vibes. Whether you’re here for the books or the beans, don’t miss this place!
I love this place! The staff are friendly and helpful! If you frequent the bookstore, they will learn your name. Coffee is yummy and the basked goods are tasty! Oh and bookstore are great! Lots of things for whatever you fancy.
Wow, that coffee is strong. Perfect heat too. And the quiche was solid too. There wasn't much open at the time but Ron, our server at Passionfish, told us to come here and low and behold they were open on Thanksgiving! Very nice people - they let us try their smoky salsa - totally worth trying instead of the tapatio
Cozy Coffee Spot with Amazing Pastries We discovered a charming coffee shop in downtown Pacific Grove, which has a warm and inviting vibe. They have a great selection of espresso drinks and baked goods. The blueberry muffins we tried were outstanding—perfectly moist, flavorful, and fresh. We love that their coffee is organic and sourced from a roastery in Santa Cruz. Our lattes were smooth and pleasant, we even took a drip coffee for the drive home. Friendly atmosphere, quality coffee, and that unforgettable blueberry muffin. We'll be back soon.
Cute little coffee shop and independent bookstore. Highly recommended if you're in the area! My friend ordered the Strawberry Matcha Latte- it has amazing strawberry puree which makes the drink so tasty! And I ordered a Butter Pecan latte and it was so sweet and tasty (loved it!). The bookstore was so intimate and cute. Loved getting to support local places. I purchased 2 paperback books.
Very cute neighborhood Café and attached bookstore. Service was great coffee was amazing. I had a dirty London fog with oat milk. I bought a great book at the bookstore about local tide pools and got to sit and relax and drink my coffee and read for a bit I always like to support independent bookstores while I’m traveling and this was a great small book. I can easily fit in my luggage to take home with me. Highly recommend this place. They also had a number of pastries available, though I did not sample any of them but they all look delicious.
This is a very popular local coffee shop. There was a line going out the door, but it's worth the wait. The PG community is small and friendly. I noticed several unattended laptops throughout the coffee house area. They also have a great bookstore attached with a nice assortment of books, cards, sand puzzles to choose from. If you just need a coffee you can get out for under $10, but if you like a muffin or snack to go with that you're looking at $10-$20.
One of the cutest coffee shops we have been to, by far! Everything about this place is authentic. The coffee & teas are incredible with seasonal specials that are creative & 5 star 🌟 worthy. The baristas are kind & skilled at their job (especially baristo Morgan--who is our fave). There are several comfy couches to curl up in while you sip your coffee... and nom the yummy Parisian-worthy pastries! On top of all that, the attached bookstore is my favorite part. First of all, bookstores are a dying love of mine...so when I find one, it makes me happy. This one is adorable with all the witty signs & decorations of someone who treasures their local business. This place is a gem. It's a must to visit when you're in the Monterey area! The photos don't do it justice...you just have to go see the place for yourself. ♥️
This is the cosiest cafe that l have visited by the Pacific seashore. Why visit the cafe? 1) For its proximity to the famed Lovers' point at Pacific grove. 2) Delicious coffee ☕ .Try their lavender 🪻 honey cuppacino ( if you like the honey flavour) and their spinach and mushroom quiches 3) The cafe is in the downtown of Pacific grove.Right in the heart.Great location. 4) You have a bookshop in the cafe so you can have great stuff to read and have a relaxed day. 5) Many charging points for insta and blogging lovers with free wi-fi access👍😃 6) But good news they have few sofas available for people who would rather prefer coffee time without any gadgets.I really loved this thoughtful gesture 🙌 of the cafe. 7)The beach is just 10 mins walking from the cafe 😃
The quintessential neighborhood bookstore! The service was phenomenal from the coffee shop to the bookstore staff they all work together to create an amazing experience. I really felt like I was transported back in time when bookstores were a fun neighborhood hang out where you went to unwind catch up on your reads and socialize with locals. The atmosphere is warm inviting and very creative. There were so many great sections to browse through I got a huge kick out of their banned Book section which I thought was really brilliant. I had an iced coffee which was fresh and delicious. I enjoyed it with a fresh warm quiche which was absolutely flaky just the way I like it with a flavorful quiche filling. They had a wonderful section for children's books as well. All in all a great place to relax after a day of walking on the beach or sightseeing.
A great "local hangout". Coffee has always been spot on and delicious. Baristas are always great at pulling the shot and also create some great latte art. The treats and pastries never disappoint. The place is small so seating and crowds can be a problem at peak hours. Seating is well done with a spot to relax or tables to sit and work at. Is defiantly worth a visit and coffee never lets you down here.
I really like the vibe of this coffee shop. I do wish the prices were more reasonable, but that's not really their fault. All the coffee shops charge $6+ for coffee. Also, be prepared for a bit of a wait. Even when it's not super busy (which isn't often), you'll wait for a while for your drink. I've tried a few drinks here, and haven't disliked any of them. Furthermore, the baristas are friendly and helpful.
A little busy on an early Wednesday morning, but the line went fast. Brewed coffee was very hot and fresh; the cappuccino had nice dry foam, the way I like it. Good selection of pastries and savory items to-go. In fact, as I parked outside, a baker was delivering several white boxes, I assumed to be more fresh goods. Several 4-top tables inside, single chairs and a picnic table for a casual group. Several tables outside for sidewalk seating.
The cafe is really cute and cozy. The staff there are also nice. However, my drink was disappointing. I ordered a honey lavender oat latte, which was $8. It tasted watered down (not by the milk) and too sweet. I really wanted to like this place because I’m a sucker for cafes in bookshops, but this latte ranks at the bottom of my list. I was also planning on buying a pastry here, but the croissant they had was flat and sad—it looked worse than Costco croissants. This place was busy when I went on a weekend, so it took about 20 mins from standing in line to getting my drink.
Great vibe and cool spot with sofas inside, some tables outside and a cute little bookstore in the back. Wanted to try based on the reviews seen online. The hot chocolate took quite some time to get out - I can understand - but it wasn’t a crazy line either. It was pretty good, I really enjoyed the taste. I also got a croissant and I think that’s my biggest disappointment. It didn’t look really nice but I still wanted to give it a try. I know this is not a pastry shop BUT if you sell some for $5, it has to be somewhat decent. You would think? And, not gonna lie it was probably one of worst croissant I have ever had. Probably some Costco croissant (sorry Costco I actually never tried yours either) - but some industrial, frozen ones that you buy in bulk for nothing. So, yeah, extremely disappointed, I know it’s a thing to sell overpriced pastries around here, but trust me to anyone around here, it’s not worth it at all. I wanted to support the business and get some food, but probably something I won’t do again because that feel like you’re getting robbed. I know I’m focusing on just a croissant, but I was so shocked haha. Anyway, cool spot for a quick drink, but that would be it for me.
I don’t usually write reviews like this, but I felt the need to share my experience. I came in excited to try the coffee and check out the bookstore. The first thing I noticed was that the cashier at the cafe didn’t engage with me, unlike other customers. I brushed it off, thinking it was just a busy morning. Then, when I went into the bookstore to support an independent shop, I smiled at a dog in line. When it was my turn to pay, the cashier asked, “Oh, do you want a treat too?” I didn’t immediately understand, but then saw the dog treat box and realized what she meant. I nervously laughed, grabbed my book, and left. I’m not sure if it was intentional, but given how things can be for brown people here, it made me uncomfortable and put a damper on my day. The honey lavender latte was good, but please be mindful of how comments like that can make people feel. Coffee shops should be welcoming for everyone, and it’s disappointing when that’s not the case.
My husband and I were staying at Gosby Inn around the corner and decided to pop by the coffee shop after breakfast at the inn as we wanted espresso drinks. I ordered a caramel latte and he ordered the honey lavender latter, both small size. Both drinks were very milky, didn’t really taste the coffee. I couldn’t taste any caramel in mine and my husband’s was mostly lavender flavor. The place was packed when we arrived so we thought the coffees would be decent. Unfortunately underwhelming, maybe ask for more shots of espresso if you want to actually taste the coffee. Cookies looked good, pastries looked ok.
