A great visit to Chef Zhao Kitchen. !he service was very goo, friendly, attentive, and impressively fast getting dishes to the table. The dining room felt clean, bright, and comfortable, and there’s plenty of parking in the lot, which is always a plus in Palo Alto. In the back there’s also a small counter area that appears to sell specialty items and frozen dumplings; I didn’t explore it much, but it looked interesting for a future visit. The food was delicious across the board. The steamed XLB were delicate and rich, each one filled with hot, savory broth that made them hard to eat slowly. The pan-fried XLB added a crisp golden bottom to that same juicy filling; the best of both worlds. The garlic-sautéed green beans were bright, fragrant, and just oily enough to feel indulgent. The braised beef noodle soup was deep and comforting, with tender beef and a broth that tasted like it had been simmering all day. Perhaps one piece of meat was a bit on the lean side. And the combination fried rice was hearty and satisfying, packed with flavor and just the right texture to keep you going back for another bite.
We didnt have to wait long to be seated. A waiter brought out tea immediately to our table. Order was taken pretty fast too. The food came out quickly. It was hot and delicious. The restaurant space feels a bit tight in between each table and chairs but still functional so its fine. Parking was easy to find. We went during dinner time on a weekday.
Today was my second visit to this restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious. The rice and noodles are cooked to the perfect texture, the meats and vegetables are well balanced in each dish, and the mushrooms are especially fragrant and delicious. The service is top notch. Tea is brought to the table immediately, the food is served fairly quickly, and the server is attentive and friendly. Chef Zhao Kitchen is now my go-to spot every time I am in the Palo Alto area.
It’s all great! I like to order farmers beef as well as popcorn shrimp and spicy wonton. The food is delicious and well seasoned, and there are good and convenient options for takeout. Also mapo tofu is good. Good for any party size, but sometimes waits can be long, as it’s relatively small inside for its popularity. Oh and one more thing, the XLB is a MUST.
Excellent Shanghai cuisine, not all American Chinese selections available. Excellent and well known soup dumplings, bao and other dim sum.
a spot in the Bay Area that nails authentic Shanghainese cuisine! If you’ve been hunting for the real 'Benbang' flavor, this is it. Start with the Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings). The skin is impressively thin yet durable, holding a spoonful of rich, savory broth that bursts with flavor. Even better were the Sheng Jian Bao (pan-fried buns)—they had that perfect golden crunch on the bottom while remaining fluffy and juicy on top. For mains, the Hong Shao Rou (Red Braised Pork Belly) is non-negotiable. It’s braised to perfection with that signature glistening red sauce, striking the ideal balance of savory and sweet that defines Shanghai cooking. The meat simply melts in your mouth. The service was efficient and friendly, and the atmosphere felt like a cozy family gathering. Whether you’re a dumpling connoisseur or just craving comfort food, this place is an absolute must-visit.
Chef Zhao is our family's go-to spot for group dinners. We've been almost every year and reserve their group dining room. It's hard to hear in the separate dining room; we can usually only hear the people next to us, not across the table. We come in with anywhere from 10 to 15 people, so the menu is always comprehensive. We've ordered and enjoyed their XLB, fried dumplings, honey walnut prawns, thick stir fried noodles, sweet and sour pork, general tso's chicken, stir fried green beans, and crab with rice cakes. Everything is always really generous and flavorful. The owner is so friendly and always greets us warmly. Staff are attentive, and we always feel welcome and familiar there. The parking lot can get crowded, especially around dinner time. We typically come in on weeknights and find parking on the other side of the lot near the market. For dine-in for large group dinners ordering lots of food, and taking home leftovers, it's usually between 45-65$ per person.
I visited this place many years ago. Back then the menu is quite limited. Now the restaurant has so much variety that we can't decide what to order. We ended up getting cold chicken, spicy fish with napa cabbage, tantan noodle, and special tofu dish. All of them are amazing! The food flavor here, I would describe them as mellow and aromatic. It is not spicy, salty nor greasy. Then the food delivers flavor. Tantan noodle is our favorite dish where the sauce has deep aromatic flavor from peanuts and sesame (I guess) which is very satisfying even though it has no strong flavor. We would love to come back and example other dishes. UPDATE 3/2025: I visited this place again and ordered the pork belly. They are amazing as well!
Always solid takeout here. My favorite by far is the house special tofu, which has an addictive savory and sweet sauce. The tofu melts in your mouth satisfyingly. Black bean fish fillet was also tender and classic. Portions are pretty big — four dishes with rice filled four people and there was a lot leftover.
Last stop before SFO airport. After a long day of driving, we were desperate for a hot meal and Chef Zhao delivered with fresh authentic restaurant quality food disguised in a counter kitchen atmosphere. We started with pork dumplings served in a warm broth with scallions. Dumplings were clearly hand-rolled and fresh with flavorful broth. Our entrees were shrimp Chow Mein and spicy beef with napa cabbage. The spicy sauce for the beef was so delicious, I had to order an extra side of rice to eat it all up! The chow Mein had a lot of fresh veggies and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. Paying was a cinch too, as all I had to do was scan the QR and then paid for the bill online. Servers were very friendly and our food came out quickly. What a great way to end our California trip. Thank you!
Food is yummy and comes out quickly. No wait or reservation needed for my family of 5 to be seated at one of their large tables on a Saturday evening. The staff are attentive and friendly. This interior is a pretty normal casual Chinese restaurant. Not too upscale but spacious enough and still cozy. Seems to get a lot of customers too.
Excellent and highly authentic Shanghainese cuisine. Highly highly recommend the pan fried fish. It is so crispy and flavorful and definitely the highlight of the meal. Every dish was very authentic and yummy. The pan fried buns were very juicy, very delicious. They were fried with the top side down in authentic fashion. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Pretty speedy and good service too.
Solid Chinese fare hidden away in a little strip mall outside of downtown Palo Alto. The restaurant interior is basic, but the food is worth the trip. Their soup dumplings were great. The pan fried dumplings were okay. I thought the bun dough was a bit thick. The pork ribs were great. The Mongolian beef lacked spice and heat. The combo fried rice was straightforward. Service was straightforward - polite but nothing stellar.
The food is really close to salty pallet ( Shanghai cousin) . We really enjoyed the food. Meet with mushroom was tender and dumplings were juicy with thin skins. We also loved a steamed dumplings , also juicy and thin skins! Appreciate it! In the morning there are people waiting, but line goes quickly. We had 4 dishes for 65 $ . We took some food home.
Only had vegetarian food so this review is not applicable to meat items. Party of six, ordered 2 appetizers, 3 curries, 1 noodle dish, 1 fried rice, and a soup. Ambience - okay. Food - okay. Some items were good but nothing too special or worth repeat ordering. Fried rice was too bland. Noodle was okay and one of the chef special tofu dish was good too. Service - worst part of the whole experience. Didn’t feel welcomed at all. I get it, it was New Year’s Eve but they were open by choice. We ordered everything at once to be considerate that it was the last hour. Things started to come, appetizer came the second last and soup was the last item to be served . Oh sorry, we got the water after that, that’s too after a reminder. Silverware also after a couple of reminders. No follow up at all. In Fact they were not serving the dishes just leaving there as if we are being paid. Since it was a party of six, 20% tip was already added and may be that’s why no service ar all and 2.5% for credit card fee. Restrooms - very slippery, safety hazard. Not stepping foot in this place ever again. Best of luck to the owners for the new year.
The food is basically good. But I received bad and rude services from the tall lady. She even shows displeasure when I’m taking the sauce from the open area table. She told me not to take the sauce. The way this was handled made me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable, and it took away from what could have been an enjoyable meal. I feel disappointed and mistreated since I am the frequent visitor of this restaurant. I have to eat while watching the waitress’s face. Still paid the high tip but they don’t have any service at all. You need to refill the water by yourself.
Dishonest business - charged a hidden 2% fee for a printed receipt. This is against the law (SB 478 effective 7/1/24). In terms of the food, the pan-fried buns were served less than 30 seconds after ordering. That means it was not freshly prepared. The smoked fish was served with all the bad pieces of the fish (mostly bones with little meat). The yellow croaker was excellent, and the mini wonton was pretty good. I don't trust this business and will not visit again.
