Opinions de Sancho's Taqueria Palo Alto
Simply the best Mexican food in Palo Alto - no contest. Ask for grilled fish tacos (not fried) and all the standard fare is fast and packed w flavor. Easily my go-to place for multiple lunches every week - so thankful we have real Mexican food here and not the overpriced Reposado pretend-Mexicano food.
This is a hidden gem in Palo Alto. I love their fish tacos, To die for. Just remember that they accept only cash. I ordered fish tacos, fish burritos and super Nacho's. Everything was amazing and portion size is big.
This was an extra pleasant surprise! Very authentic chile relleno, so hard to find in Ca! The Ceviche was big and so fresh!! Salsas for all palates, I loved the smokey habanero and serrano salsa. Very prompt and friendly service, Aguas frescas and outdoor shaded seating. A+ because its thrifry too!
Fish burritos and shrimp quesadillas are my favorites. Big pieces of shrimp, great sauces, crispy fish. Best Mexican food for lunch in downtown Palo Alto. Downsides: there isn't much seating and they are cash only.
From the outside it doesn't look much but this is the best mexican in Palo Alto. Fantastic Shrimp tacos. Friendly and quick service, well presented food and the tacos are crammed full of freshly cooked authentic mexican ingredients. I love this place.
Sancho's is the best restaurant in Palo Alto. You will never go wrong with any of the burrito combinations. The only downside is cash only, but there's a BofA ATM across the street just go there beforehand. :)
This is the place to go and get good food quickly. I really like their fish or shrimp taco and chips come with it! Sometimes it can get busy but it's worth the wait!
Always loved their Pastor or Carne Asada super burrito. Kinda lame of them to continue refusing cards or digital payments in 2020 (still cash only), but at least there's an atm next to the counter.
The portions are decently sized. The burritos are tightly packed. The service is quick even though it is often busy. Remember to bring cash as that is the only option to pay.
Omg the mole burrito was so tasty. Huge burrito and I do not regret eating the hole thing in one sitting. Their mole wasa little sweet, like traditional mole. They also have traditional natural drinks like horchata and jamaica. Heads up, this place is cash only.
I ordered the Super Veggie Burrito and it was indeed that. I will be going back the next time I'm in Palo Alto.
The service friendly and fast. Came craving fried fish tacos and they did NOT disappoint - the chips and salsa we're good (not that notable) as were the super nachos my husband ordered. BUT GO FOR THE FRIED FISH TACOS 😍. Highly recommend if you're in the PA area and having a hankering for tacos.
Cash only. Shrimp quesadillas have good, fresh shrimp, and lots of gooey cheese... yum. Try the fish ceviche (huge portion) and chicken mole. Fish tacos are big and delicious. This location doesn't keep high chairs on hand, so be warned if you've got a little one in tow.
this is the best fish taco ive had in my life. i have been to both locations and both of them are so homey and the staff is so friendly. i love the salsas and they are reasonably priced for the fresh food they have. a definite place to try in PA
Incredible fish grilled fish taco!!! Best in the bay.
I ordered a meal for my staff from here so I just picked up and we didn't eat here. It was very crowded when I went and had to wait a few minutes while they gathered everything I was getting. But we did order quite a bit. The tacos were great, just what we were looking for. The best were the fish ones we had.
My spouse and I love both Sancho's in Palo Alto. The portions are not shy and ALWAYS so Delicious. Though we would like for the salsas to be more Mexican and flavorful. Unfortunately the salsas have not been the biggest hit and need sabor mas autentico. But everything on their menu is delicious. Plus the customer service is always nice and friendly.
Pretty solid Mexican food. Asada taco was delicious. Grilled fish taco was just okay - fried fish probably would have been better. Carnitas burrito was solid and fairly priced. Shrimp fajitas looked great - wish I’d gotten those. Good location too. Cash only
This is a pretty fantastic taqueria overall! They're burritos are top-notch. Really good beans really good rice. Fresh salsa bar all of this is very payment is cash only. So does best to come prepared.
A great place for a quick bite. It is usually busy during lunch time as people from nearby companies come to get their food. It is cash only at the store, but they do accept credit card if you do pickup order online in advance. My favorite: fish taco, fish burrito, and crispy taco with chorizo.
My favorite fish tacos in the bay area. Delicious burritos and plenty of salsas to choose from. Great for a quick bite at lunch or dinner. Seating is limited but you can always grab your food to go.
Super friendly staff and GREAT FOOD!
Had fish taco and super chicken burrito. Both excellent!
I came in with my parents one day and the waiter was super helpful. We had a bit of issue with payment and he was nothing but sweet and suggests alternative way for us to pay. He also recommends a lot of AMAZING food that my parents love. We think it's better than other mexican restaurant in bay area. Truly outstanding food quality and portion for very affordable prices too. I will definitely come back with more friends and families.
Very good grilled fish tacos. I recommend getting avocado added to them.
A hole in the wall taqueria with wonderful food. Decent prices for Palo Alto, good quality ingredients, and the kind of variety you'd expect. The decor isn't anything to write home about and it is cash only, but you aren't going to a place like this for the ambiance, you are going for the food.
By far the tastiest Mexican Food in town, with the most friendly people running the place. Whether you get a basic Regular Taco or the loaded Sancho's Taco, Quesadillas of each kind or Burrito, they are all fantastic. Their salsa bar has mild, hot and XX hot sauces all great there or to go.
Sancho's always hits the spot and their team is great!
Good service, food portions are big, authentic Mexican food without long waiting. Definitely a good cheap alternative in Palo Alto. I only would like that they accept credit cards
best fish burrito!! it’s a cash only place, the staff is super sweet and i cannot recommend the fish burrito enough. it’s the best one in the world 💗💗 Update 2025: still the best fish burrito in the world. Nothing compares. I dream of it at night.
Great for a quick bite or to sit down with a friend. The food is always great. Large portions for a cheaper price. Great customer service. There are two TVs if you are looking for a quieter place to watch a game. Chips and Salsa are now an additional dollar, but refills are free. This restaurant is cash only, but there is an ATM across the street.
They are very welcoming when you walk in the door. The food is delicious 🤤
These guys went above and beyond for our family! Had a great experience with really rare personal service and caring/accommodation when we needed it. Good food & great place. Sancho, you've got a great team & thank you for everything!
Awesome fish and shrimp tacos-- huge and full of flavor.
Food was great, had been a while since we’ve eaten here but going back on the list! Wish they didn’t char the tortilla but still darn good
Best burrito in Town. The place accepted only cash or we had to use a new app.the food was fantastic. It's a secret hole in the wall spot.
Best fish tacos I’ve ever had! Been coming here for years and the quality always remains the same. Friendly and attentive service from the host. Bring cash as it’s cash only!
Walked by , took a quick look and went in There was people of all ethnic backgrounds in queued so I got a good feel. Three things I liked 1. Taste 2. Service 3. Portions Added bonus the price
Food was extra good today. Great value for money as always. And super fast delivery.
Love Sancho's, we have been going their for 17 years and more than 400 times. Fish tacos are the families favorite.
Great vibe, great prices, great food. 10/10 would visit again Thanks for showing us how to order online when we didn’t have cash!
This place is a hidden gem. We were starving and needed food and it was convenient but then I bit into my quesadilla and it was incredible. You could taste the quality of the chicken which was well grilled. Also came with pico and guacamole and was substantial. Worth going out of your way for!
Best chili verde burrito ever, and super nice folks at Sancho's! The place itself is small, and they only have a couple of outdoor sidewalk tables on the street, but there's always a good soccer game on tv.
We come here often because the staff is friendly and the food is reliably good. We like their fish tacos (grilled or battered and fried), and we also like their burritos and chimichangas too. Chips and guacamole are good as well. Bring cash or use their ATM. There are some tables outside if you’d rather enjoy the weather, but they do have tables inside and a restroom. It’s perfect if you’re not in the mood for a long sit down experience, quick and tasty food!
Prior to visiting Sancho's Taqueria I had never ordered fish tacos before in my life. I never ever wanted to. However, yesterday I decided to give them a chance. This decision was definitely influenced by the overwhelming number of positive yelp reviews I read when trying to make an ordering decision. Several of which went so far as to say they were the best thing on the menu. Anyway, I was not disappointed. I would absolutely give them my stamp of approval and that should really mean a lot to you. I will be back here again, likely to try something else, but I would go back to the fish tacos as well. Also, having delicious guacamole and Negra Modelo on tap scores major points in my book.
Solid taqueria when I need a break away from the busy downtown spots
This place was rather busy on a weekday night but we were attended well . Sadly it's cash only, luckily there was a bofa across across street and I didn't have to pay a bogus ATM fee. Had the super nachos, they had a deep red mole type sauce thay they could have gone without. The sauce itself was good but it could have gone better on some enchiladas not on the super nachos
Highly recommend. I get the super veggie burrito (no dairy to make it vegan) the veggies are grilled and flavorful, the tortilla is flakey and rich, the rice is well seasoned. Satisfying salsa bar. Atmosphere is casual. They have a fair amount of seating now, but large groups would be hard. Cash only. Definitely busy at lunch.
The food is good. Like really really good. The place is constantly busy. Make sure to bring cash with you because that's all this place takes. Service is ok. Younger guy didn't give me my change or receipt. Had to have a paper one written up. The older lady there is amazing with her service. Very helpful with customers. If not for the cashier I'd easily give this little gem a 5
I ate a burrito here the other day. The meat and other fillings inside were excellent, and created a very tasty mix. Unfortunately, the tortilla used was below the quality I've come to expect from quality Mexican restaurants. Otherwise, however, it was a good experience, and a worthwhile and affordable meal.
Update (Feb 2019): No longer has free WIFI, still cash only. Sanchos unfortunately doesn't seem interested in improvements or innovation, even if it would help the business succeed. Old review (Sept 2017): these guys have amazing fish tacos, always free chips and a nice salsa bar. They're also very fast and efficient even as busy lunch time. best of all though they're very honest , I left my wallet there the other day and they kept it safe for me to pick up.
Caveat: Vegetarian review I ordered the taco and enchilada. The tacos were better. The rice is excellent and the beans, so-so. Their sauces are their highlight; with the extra-hot embodying very tangible levels of spice. In general, portions tend to be large.
I ordered from here from Uber eats twice before. Both times they've gotten my order wrong in some way. I got the ground beef burrito which was pretty good. But they didn't include the salsa that I ordered on the side.
Good food, reasonable prices, but cash-only. They had plenty of vegetarian variety. I ordered their Super Veggie wet burrito and enjoyed it! Their portion sizes are fairly generous, and the prices are reasonable. However, they do not accept any cashless mode of payment besides checks — I was lucky to have some spare cash when coming in, but now I will have to think twice and check my wallet before stepping in next time.
It's been a long time since I've been back, but they're fish tacos are legit! Grilled or fried, they are golden nuggets of joy! The shrimp tacos were okay and the Cali Nachos were just okay. Great service as always! Recommended!
Picked up food here for the first time yesterday. It was OK. Had the fish tacos which people recommend and it was fine. I’ve definitely had better. The bean and cheese burrito was good not very flavorful, but I would get here again. You can order ahead, which was nice. Good prices!
I go here because it's convenient and decently priced, but I don't think it is anything amazing. People love their fish tacos - I'm not a huge fan. I'd recommend the enchiladas, the tostada, a burrito, or the nachos. There's definitely better Mexican food though.
Pretty heavy burrito this "super burrito". Taste is ok-ish, nothing fancy. Full, filling, fast. That's what you can expect. Which is super fine if you are hungry and wanna eat fast. Probably I'll look for a better Mexican next time. People there are nice tho, and that's a plus.
Great food but I have to deduct a star for only taking cash as payment. Dining area is pretty small and awkward in some areas. Line can get out the door since place is pretty small to accomodate more than a handful of guests.
Their Mexican dish is authentic. Like really really good. The place is constantly busy. Make sure to bring cash with you because that's all this place takes. Because is so busy and hectic don't expect to be service to be 5 stars.
The tacos that I got were fine. It was frustrating that it's a cash-only place and when I was there their in-store ATM was not working so I had to walk across the street to Bank of America's ATM. The parking is limited also. I would say if you are in the neighborhood it's a perfectly fine place to get food, but I wouldn't go out of your way or stop by if you're just passing through like I was.
Chimichanga was good, veggie tacos were not. The Chile rellenos were also not great. The staff was friendly and the salsa bar was nice.
I can't rate the food but the menu looked good. Couldn't purchase anything because they only accept cash. Pretty shocking that in Palo Alto and in 2023 a restaurant won't take a credit card or a debit card. Maybe one day I can try the food and review the food portion but I got to give them a low score for having such outdated purchasing abilities.
Decent tacos but they messed up my order twice. I had to go back to the cashier because the server and cook staff wouldn't believe me that I ordered another item (it hadn't gotten to the receipt or they misunderstood the receipt, not sure they were speaking Spanish). All in for two tacos with one fish and a rice beans meal and salad was about $17-20. A bit overpriced for service and food quality. Wouldn't recommend the "salad." Felt a bit queesy afterwards anyways. And for such a price they should accept credit cards (cash only).
I just came back from Mexico City and Oaxaca so my standards are probably way higher than yours. But not impressed. The cheese in my burrito isn’t even melted. The hottest salsa they have isn’t even mild. The horchata is for sure 100% processed and not natural. No bits of cinnamon in it, nada. Won’t be returning.
We visited this place after reading glowing things on Yelp! Yelp! Needs to have a subset of reviews that are written under the influence of drugs or alcohol (another drug, I know, but...) or both (yes, I know, redundant, but....) I am convinced that most of the reviews written for at least this place were penned by a stoned or otherwise inebriated hand. The food was sub-par. My burrito was cold in some places, and there were bits of bone throughout. One of the staff yelled at me and a few other diners to depart in 2 minutes so she could clean, even though we were waiting....and waiting patiently....for the food we had just paid for. Apparently they were closing up for the night. I dunno. I don't smoke at all, and I don't drink enough to where I'll ever consider returning. If you're looking for sub-par, tasteless munchies this might suffice but I'm pretty sure Jack in the Box would be better. And no one's going to yell at you to leave JitB.
I’m sorry but this place isn’t how it use to be back in the days. Before the food was fresh and had that authentic Mexican taste… now it’s just your basic tacos and burritos. And they use to have a variety of salsas that were delicious… now just 3 basic salsas. But the food is good, but it’s not how it used to be. At this point, I’d recommend Tacolicous down the street instead.
Super quesadilla with pastor meat: meat was burned to charcoal and tasteless. Asked and paid for extra sour cream and guacamole and got neither. Had taken meal home before tasting it. Previous visits had given underwhelming results - bland food and bored staff. Will try once more before giving up on this place.
My favorite place before today. Chips are included, but sometimes they charge extra for it. Be careful, they have 20% tax as well. If your burrito costs $6.95 you going to pay $9. Cash only. I can't order their food in the Jeench! They don't have Jeench delivery as well! However their food is amazing.
Awful tasting and overpriced. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY HERE. I know real Mexican food, and this is NOT it. Salsa is definitely watered down. Guacamole was not made with fresh avocados (appears to be the cheap crap you find in a refrigerated package). No flavor at all to rice and beans. Tasted like plastic. I can't stress this enough. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME HERE. So very, very disappointing.
The people are here D*cks! Also they charge for salsa! A real stupid policy. It’s standard everywhere that you get salsa included with your Mexican food. Not here and when I asked for some they were super nasty about it. I wasn’t even rude. Never going here again!
No flavor, they should try their food before they sell it. Meat was flavorless and the chips were cardboard triangles. Even the salsa was lacking in flavor. I dont think there's a salt shaker in the kitchen or pepper. How hard is it to make carne asada taste right? Sorry but, not worth it at all
Worst experience for mexican restaurants.. Bland food, no flavour. I asked for extra Jalapeños, they said they did NOT have Jalapeños?? Is this a mexican restaurant. We had food delivered but there were NO corn-chips with ANY dish. so overprced, under falvoured, terribly small portions...
Not good anymore. The last few orders were a terrible experience! Yes it used to be good and delicious. Yes you have increased the prices but you have decreased the protein in your tacos and burritos. The last few times we ordered fajita burritos which were filled with only rice and beans, just a few pieces of chicken and fried onions. Where are the peppers, where is the meat? Fish tacos have few small pieces of fish and even the amount of cabbage is to bare minimum. Sorry we need to find a new taqueria.
Decent food, nothing special, a bit overpriced, mediocre quality meat. The man at the counter was decidedly unfriendly to me, probably because I got distracted and missed tipping right away at the counter, but tipped normally at the end despite the bad taste in my mouth.
The super nachos you show look so delicious I was excited to try them. But that isn't what I received. I really should have taken a picture, reasons are too many. The nachos were covered with a spicy red sauce. Who puts red sauce on nachos!?! Not to mention the nachos were microwaved with the sour cream! Looked spread on with a spoon and was cracked open from being microwaved. It was soggy when I arrived home (15 mins). Taco Bell beats this! As for your salsas, they were damn good!
RUDE REGISTER GUY! OVER PRICED and certainly NOT authentic Mexican food. Ordered over the phone and the order taker was so rude and talked over me as I was giving my order. I wasn't confident he got the order right and sure enough he didn't. At pick-up, the register guy (same man) was extremely rude! He barked at me with an attitude when I asked how much the burrito was since the price was higher than their online menu. I get it that food prices go up but there's no need to raise your voice and rudely attack your inquisitive customer. He said with a nasty tone "So you want it or not!!" With disbelief I just turned and walked out. Apparently his rudeness is an issue as others have posted reviews saying the same thing. PLUS, I should have known not to come back and try it again after the last bad experience getting a tasteless burrito a few months ago. Definitely NOT authentic Mexican. Sancho's was good years ago but has gone way down in quality and especially service over the past year. I went down the street to a really good Mexican restaurant with kind service. Beware of Sanchos Taqueria on Lytton Street Palo Alto.
I order a Asada Nachos and there's no Asada in the Nachos, guacamole was black already chips were saggy, they put red sauce all over I ask for Nachos not Chilaquiles 😔 Horrible Experience never ordered again for this place 😑
Cash only? In the location u guys are at? In the big 2025? This place is perfect for the people that live in the area, not if you’re actually looking for Mexican food. No authentic Mexican spot adds cheese to their tacos💀I saw a review where the owner commented that they have been there for 20 years so they must be good but then that same owner comments to another review saying that credit card company fees are killing small businesses LMFAO so which one is it?🤔It’s universally known that businesses who only do “cash only” are avoiding paying taxes/lying about how much they make. But who’s going to notice when the demographic ur serving doesn’t know the scamming going on at this business. Definitely getting reported with the Better Business Bureau as well🥀
This place is overpriced, inflated, ordered the chicken flautas and the chicken had a really bad taste. I tried this place once again after my first visit about a year or so ago which was the same , not good. You have to wonder why this place has over 4 stars when it should be like a - 1 star the most.
