The diner has become so well known that it can be hard to squeeeeze in on Sat/Sun. Weekdays are just as good. Edit 1/2023. New management just completed first 12 months. Menu slightly different, just as good. Highly recommended. Dining tables are crowded, so we prefer counter.
If Mel's diner, Thomas the Tank, and Peter Dinklage had a baby, this place would be it! A small, gritty, diner, in a choo choo train car. The food is killer, the prices are SO REASONABLE, and the staff is not only kind and welcoming, but are incredibly hard working. Don't come here expecting linen tablecloths and bone china, come here for the atmosphere, the service, the biscuits, and the kitch.
Food was great. This place runs like a well oiled machine! So busy, it's tiny but just enough space. So busy, they take reservations! Crazy cool little place with some authentic original dishes.
If you love breakfast. You'll love this little diner. The atmosphere is calm and slightly nostalgic. The food is well prepared and delicious. The price matches the serving. It is a well rounded establishment. I will be going back!!!
Retro diner with excellent food. Very small inside, be prepared for that. Homemade offerings include scratch gravy, biscuits, corned beef ( cooked the right way- long and slow) and pancakes, sweet or buckwheat. Great experience all around, can't beat the prices either. Wish I lived closer!
I just went to the Penn Yan Diner for the first time ever tonight. The food was excellent (roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy) and the owners are really friendly. I was also really impressed with the french onion soup. They told me they just bought the place a little over a year ago. So if you've been there in the past and weren't satisfied, try it again. You won't be disappointed.
Food is delicious! Menu offers a variety of great options, including classic staples, while also accommodating different dietary preferences. Delightful and friendly customer service - a pleasant place that my family really enjoys visiting!
Absolutely LOVE the Penn Yan Diner. Such a fun experience, eating at the counter in an old train car. The food is prepared right in front of you, and is delicious (the potatoes are the best!) But the best part was the wonderful people that work here, so friendly and sweet. We came every morning for breakfast and will definitely be back.
Hands down the best breakfast in Penn Yan and probably the entire Finger Lakes region too. The owners and staff are very friendly and the food is incredible. They have some of the best pancakes I've ever eaten (sorry dad) and my personal favorite is the "Big Steve" which is sausage gravy on hashbrowns with toast. Unless you're really loading up, a meal for two will never cost more than $15-20. The only downside to the entire place is that seating is very limited due to the building being a remodeled train car. It's very good for atmosphere but not so much for large groups. Otherwise a great choice for a morning out.
Quaint, cute diner off of the main Street. Excellent selection on the menu and they cross support other local business' products. I'm specifically referring to Sudsy's Hot Sauce. I had the eggs benedict with a half order side of loaded tater tots....divine!
I love this place! Absolutely the best place for a relaxed, delicious meal at a great price in Penn Yan. I had a Pizza Burger and I loved it! Everything was made in house, the burger, the bun, the fries, the macaroni and cheese. I kind of felt like my mom would be jealous that I was enjoying their food so much!
Best breakfast in Penn Yan. Unfortunately there’s usually a wait here because it is a small diner and COVID-19 restrictions make it so they can only have a limited amount of people in the diner. But it’s definitely worth the wait. They also are super supportive of Penn Yan Ambulance. I’m a member there and the diner bought our breakfast for us when we came here one morning.
The restaurant promises to be "retro-licious" and does not disappoint. Absolutely everything we've eaten here has been amazing. The staff is super friendly and will cheerfully make substitutions. Try literally anything. And when the staff suggests the local hot sauce? Say yes!
If you want great quality food this is your place. Loaded tots are no brainer and the uncle Terry with corn beef hash is delicious. The staff is very nice and efficient
If you like food, you have to stop here. The place has a true retro feel to it. I don’t think they necessarily meant for it to be that way but, it’s still cool. The people are awesome. The sweet cream pancakes are unreal. Truly unique and tasty.
The diner was quaint and very enjoyable. My husband and I shared a buckwheat pancake, a sugar cream pancake and the homemade corned beef hash and eggs. Food was excellent. Service was great. Highly recommend.
I first heard about this place when participating in the Peasantman Tri and finally visited recently. The prices are reasonable, the staff are friendly, overall an ideal diner atmosphere. Only area I feel like they could improve in is the space - it's very small. But, service is great and moves fast and there's outdoor seating, so we didn't have to wait and I wouldn't expect a long wait in the future.
Great breakfast! Loved the buckwheat pancakes. Our eggs and hash browns cooked perfectly! Super friendly service. Busy, we ate at counter and great service and attention!
The food was the best breakfast food I can ever remember having. I went with the French toast weekly special and the loaded tots, and my only disappointment was that I physically couldn’t finish the meal. 5/5 without question.
Always end up here for breakfast when we come to the college. Service quick, food delicious and more than we can finish. Cook (don't know her name) went above and beyond to prepare a meal for one of our party with food allergies.
Very cozy spot for a delicious breakfast! Got the Sean with sweet cream pancakes, which were light and fluffy! My husband enjoyed the corned beef hash. Staff were friendly, service was fast.
The food here is so good! We stopped by on our way out of the area after camping. There were 3 of us and we each ordered something different- everything was delicious. The food is worth the wait! They have vegan/vegetarian options as well.
It was our first time being there. The ambiance is so cool! We were immediately greeted by the waitress. She was very friendly and chatted with us many times throughout our time there. I ordered the "Big Steve" and a Sweet Cream pancake. I'm not typically a pancake person but it was delicious!!! I was over-stuffed because I couldn't let anything go to waste. 😉 Definitely a MUST when you are in the area! (My husband even had to buy one of their coffee mugs for $.25!!)
At the Penn Yan Diner, the owners have thoughtfully constructed an extensive menu (including many gluten free options) filled with incredibly delicious options. Every single dish I’ve sampled as been outstanding. Couple that with all the charms you would expect from a small town, locally owned establishment… This diner is an absolute must!
Stopped in for breakfast while passing through town, and this small diner was absolutely delightful. The kind of charm, quality of food and personal service that you can only get in a small town and in a privately owned business. I definitely will return the next time I’m in Penn Yan.
This place was amazing! Friendly helpful service and delicious food! Make sure you check the specials on the board when you walk in. Our group had biscuits and gravy, tater tot casserole, the special of the day french toast, and there wasn't a scrap left on anyone's plate. Everything was delicious. The decor is vintage diner that's been deeply cared for, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I definitely plan to go back next time I'm in the area.
Stopped in for brunch during our stay in Pen Yan before making the drive home and we are so glad we did. This place is awesome! I ordered the Shawn with the sweet cream pancakes and it was incredible! Highly recommend!
What a cute little diner! They have contact less menus and social distancing, which I really appreciated. I ordered a hot chocolate and the Sean order - eggs, bacon, toast, 2 pancakes and home potatoes. The diner offers gluten free pancakes with optional blueberries, chocolate chips or strawberries and they were FLUFFY AS HELL. They also offer gf toast that was yummy. Wonderful place and the customer service was top notch. Would definitely be back!
Nice little diner with only a little curb appeal but tons of character, good service, and great food. Not a lot of seating with only about 8 small tables and a long counter with a dozen stools. It's worth the wait for the experience and food. The pancakes are a highlight of their food offerings. Awesome coffee too!
They were very accommodating of my dietary restrictions. I'm gluten-free and vegan, and they fed me like a queen! It was so good we went twice during our long weekend. Highly recommend.
Very Good. Small diner that used to be a train car. Dined on Thursday morning, August 5th, 2021. Only had to wait a few minutes for a seat. Ordered coffee, scrambled eggs, bacon and a sausage patty. Food came fast. The food was great. Bacon was very thin but tasted good. Waitress was very friendly. Eggs were cooked in butter and awesome, not like the last diner I went to in Penn Yan that cooked them in old grease and I couldn't eat them. Restroom was clean.. Nice little place.
I've been coming here with my family for years while passing through and every trip is worth the 1 and a half hour drive! Staff is kind and helpful, atmosphere is lovely, food is AMAZING, and everything was worth the drive! Tight seating doesn't bother me at all and the 45 min wait was 100% worth it because we could walk around and look at little shops nearby. My family brought a whole cooler to take lots of leftovers home because we only come a couple times a year! We'll definitely keep coming back with our t-shirts!
Update 2021: difficult to get a seat! My review is working! Our good ppl at the diner still knocking amazing food out of the park! Short hours open, so get there early and enjoy the now hopping town of Penn Yan . I almost don't recognize ya. We've been visiting the diner for 8+ years now...... I and my family have been coming to the diner for about 3 years. We are out of sorts if we miss coming when in town. We ordered turkey for our Thanksgiving dinner and it was absolutely worth every tasty bite!!! The owners are amazing , always remember us and treat us like good friends. Pick anything, ANYTHING on the menu and you will never be disappointed. P.S. my kids love it over all the other restaurants on Keuka Lake. Love from your friends in Buffalo!!!! <3
I have been going there for a week straight and the order I needed placed is very precise and all of the staff have gone out of their way to go above and beyond to make sure the order is perfect. The food is delicious and customer service is truly amazing. Thank you for providing such a wonderful dining experience.
We stopped in here on our way out of town. There was quite a long wait time, but the wait was well worth it! It's a super small, tight place but if you are not socially claustrophobic, then it's a pretty good place to stop and get breakfast. I haven't had buckwheat pancakes in very long time, and theirs are pretty darn good. I would definitely suggest it to anyone who is in Penn Yan during breakfast time.
Best pies in the Village! Homemade hash is fabulous! Also, delicious soups, sandwiches and specials. Good for breakfast or lunch. Original train car and friendly staff offer a unique experience - don't miss!
One of the best diners I've ever been to. The atmosphere is as classic as it gets, the staff is attentive and friendly beyond compare and the food is to die for. An easy recommend for anyone in the area!
We were recommended to go to the Penn Yan diner and it was a phenomenal recommendation!! We had breakfast there before heading home to Philadelphia and it was such a great place to end our vacation. The decor is so darn cute, the staff super friendly and the food was delicious!! Even one of the other customers, a local woman, came over to chat and welcome us to the diner. I had the breakfast burrito and my husband had the French toast, and we shared tater tots. Everything was delicious! Definitely make a point of going to the Penn Yan diner, you won’t regret it! Megan and Mike Connors
This is a small, out of the way train car dinner with all fresh home made family food. The staff is very friendly and the food is sooooo good. If you're local or just passing through, it's totally worth the stop. And they are veteran friendly and have a loyalty program.
This is a tiny place for maybe 25 customers with half the seating at a counter. The food was amazing and the portions were generous. The staff were friendly to customers and worked quickly. There was quick turnover of customers; it's not a place to linger over your coffee talking. I recommend the loaded tater tots.
A small diner with terrific food, service and old time feel! We sat at the counter and had a Birds Eye view of the cooks! They do an amazing job in such a small place! July wife has a gluten allergy and they made sure they changed gloves before starting to cook her meal!
I went here with my daughter on a Tuesday morning. Nice old school dine. It was pretty busy but not crazy. We were told to sit where ever we liked, so we sat at the counter. We had a front row seat by a flatop and watched the cook making orders! The waitress asked us about drinks and brought them back pretty fast. The food was Great as was the service. We definitely will be going back when I am in Penn Yan.
Friendly staff, great food! We came here on a late Friday morning and quickly got a table for 4. 3 of us had breakfast items and one had a lunch special! Everything was delicious, incredibly fresh and prepared perfectly. Only one warning - if you want to sit inside, there is limited seating (a few tables of 4.)
Great food, and super friendly staff. Well worth the stop. The only downside is that this place is SMALL. A lot of side stepping and squeezing through to get to our table and the restroom. Don't let it turn you off, though. Great diner.
The best breakfast in all of the finger lakes by far!!! My husband and I ate here for breakfast every single day on our recent trip to the area, 4 days in a row, never got sick of it, and the food just got better every day! The diner is absolutely adorable, the staff are so nice and friendly, and the food is absolutely amazing. You can tell all of the food is fresh and homemade. Most importantly, the diner was very clean and everyone followed all social distancing guidelines. We will definitely be visiting again on our next trip!
Food was top-notch, service was very, very good. Those that work here really care about your meal being the best. My wife ordered the Sausage Gravy Biscuits. I ordered the Grandpa Don. We shared the half order of the Sausage Gravy Biscuits. We were both pleasantly full when we were finished with our breakfast. Kudos to breakfast.
Really neat vibes. All the workers seemed super friendly. They have lots of veggie and gluten free options which is so cool. My buddy got a fried culliflower wrap and said it was delightful. I got a huge veggie omelet that was to die for. The acoustics in the little place could be hard for a kid or someone with sensory issues to deal with as it does get loud in there when busy. But it is so cute and really delicious so if you can over look that I would recommend this if you are that way. :)))
Sunday 12/17/23 What a charming place! We ate at the bar and watched our meal being made. Everyone was smiling and so pleasant. Our breakfast portions were generous and delicious! Real ingredients used and obviously made with love. We will certainly be back! Thank you!
This place is heaven. The staff is amazing, and the food even better. Its small, but that's what makes it so comfty. It's my favorite diner. The pankakes taste like clouds! You can watch the people make some of the food, and it's incredible how they work together. Great for familys alike. No matter the drive, its worth it!!! IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN HERE YOU HAVEN'T LIVED.
It’s rare to find a classic / oldschool diner with any plant-based options. Penn Yan diner had several vegan options, and I enjoyed a vegan Belgian waffle with a side of Beyond Sausage. It was phenomenal. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and our food came out so quickly. Very affordable too! Well worth the stop.
Small diner with a great atmosphere. My server was fantastic and very pleasant. Hands down the best sausage gravy I have ever had. The real maple syrup is worth the up charge on the French toast. 4/7/19 Finally talked some of my coworkers into coming here again. Still just as good. They had a locally produced hot sauce this time around, "Sudsy's Fearless." Great flavor with good heat. The sausage gravy is still on point!
They had gluten free bread they used to substitute eggs Benedict. The hollandaise was yum & the eggs cooked perfectly. Also a good serving of hollandaise! The gluten free bread was pretty good. Their gluten free Belgian waffle with ice cream, ugh so good!!! A must try especially if you're Gluten intolerant. Gluten free pancakes also were really good. Sausage links were not best but not worst, bacon not best either. And home fries weren't really how most home fries are, needed more cooking. Coffee was good! Such a cute place BTW. Staff were nice but they were understaffed both times so service a bit slower than other places. So if you're in a hurry, not sure how well it would go. Also they were very aware of gluten allergies. Highly recommend!! It was packed both times FYI.
What a great find!! Beautiful homey little Diner right in the Village, with great food and most likely the best Eggs Benedict I have ever had!! The tavern ham they use has great flavor and make sure you the locals homemade hot sauce it has great flavor and medium heat. And on top of all that Tabby and Violet you are the definition of awesome service and what service should be with a smile!!! Thank you and I'm looking forward to my next trip through Penn Yan.
A wonderful bit of old fashioned Americana right smack in the middle of the computer age! It was Sunday morning, we went in, they took my cell number and texted me when we could be served. We waited about 20 minutes. We sat at the end of the counter where all the cooking action takes place. You use your phone camera to snap the QR code and your menu appears on your phone! Pancakes, buckwheats, waffles, French toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, corned beef hash, hot coffee and decaf too! Lunch items, French onion soup. You want it, they got it in a 1925 dining car. It's a meal and a show all at once. Great buckwheat pancakes. If I lived in Penn Yan, I'd eat there every weekend! Great food and lots of nostalgia and just plain FUN!
We stumbled across this wonderful diner while driving through Penn Yan to visit a Mennonite farm store. We were pleasantly surprised to find that this diner offers plentiful gluten-free options. My wife got the gluten-free pancakes and also a side of bacon. She loved both. I got the eggs benedict and black coffee and everything was great. There was a good many locals that made for interesting small-town people watching. The staff at the restaurant were very kind and very welcoming. The food also came out astoundingly quickly. I am 6‘2“ tall and I will say that the door and the ceiling were rather low which made the place even more charming, although I did have to duck in order to walk into the establishment. The bathrooms were well-kept but tiny for such a tall man as myself. Not a bad thing just simply something to note. Highly recommend! You definitely need to visit this place for breakfast or lunch if you’re driving through Penn Yan.
Food was great and everyone working there was wonderful! We over ordered because we couldn't decide. She had "the Sean" which was 2 eggs, bacon, French toast and potatoes. Also ordered 1/2 order biscuits and gravy - sooooo good! He ordered the eggs Benedict with side order of 1 sweet cream pancake. Everything was delicious! We'll come back again.
"Cozy" diner in the heart of town. The owner maintains a faithful 50's look and feel. Basic breakfast menu and several daily specials. The food is simple, tasty and reasonably priced. Friendly service but you might have to wait if you go at prime time. They'll take your name and text you when a table is ready.
Friendly diner, but very small. I guess that's what makes it quaint. If you're over 6 feet tall, you better duck through the doorway. Staff was very friendly. We went at 0730 on a Sunday and had no issues getting a seat and the wait time for the food was average. Would go back to again.
Stopped here for lunch during the week. It is very small inside. We were originally seated at a table, but when a large group of older people came in, we moved to the counter so that they could spread out using the tables. Workers were very friendly and the food was very good "diner" food. Their fryer was not working that day, so I had to change my original order, but my lunch was excellent. Parking is on the street or in a lot across the street. We had no issues finding a spot. We will definitely stop back when we are in the area.
The service was great and the food was good. I got the Sweet Pancake and found it to be good, but not great. My colleague got eggs and toast and found that the eggs were very good and the toast was also good. There isn't much space on the inside and it very much is just an old fashioned diner. Overall food was average and service was great. I would recommend this place for a quick breakfast because the food is good and is served quickly.
Such a cute place! Worth the experience and history! Food was delicious and service was good! Place is a bit crowded feeling because it's small but that's part of the experience. Just go with a flexible plan, understanding there may not be room when you go and may require waiting a little while or coming back another time.
First timers: Breakfast served all day. This is a very traditional diner. Small, tight, old and vintage but still nice. Just like walking back in time. WiFi is beyond excellent. Bathrooms very small but clean, kept up and updated. Coffee $2.49. Staff very nice. Tried the diner-hash, it was okay but I came away somewhat disappointed. I did give it above average stars and would recommend this place.
Pretty good “home cooked” food server here. Quite funny… sign outside says “4th best chili in PY!” Mid century look with Formica counters; yellow and turquoise. Great bar seats up front, although this is a family diner. Also, first time for us - pay using a unique QR code - no cashier needed
Small place with a counter and a few tables. We sat at the counter right by the grill. I had a cheeseburger and chips, food was good and we enjoyed the visit. It looks like this is an old diner car with some added on space. Give it a try I think you'll like the experience.
I wanted to like it. I want small town diners to survive, but the meal itself was phoned it. Canned beef gravy, roast beef that was select grade at best, and sourdough that just ... dry. Atmosphere was good, service was good.
We waited for 40 minutes for our food after ordering. The pancakes and sausages were good but the bacon was over-cooked. Overall we had a good time but the washrooms were out of paper and the wait being so long and not even getting our coffees refilled during the wait, we were sitting with empty coffees for 20 mins, was not fun. Not a great experience even though most of the food was ok.
Good homemade corn beef hash. Very slow service. Breakfast took just shy of 50 min. start to finish (5 min to eat). Not very attentive wait staff would have loved a 2nd drink and I was sitting at the counter
We read that this diner has the best breakfast in town. So of course we went when we were in town for our long wedding weekend. There are very few tables, as it’s an old rail car and they use an app for checking in. So we gave our name and number and they said they would text when a table was ready. They estimated 15-20 min. Because there is no space to wait inside and it was a nice day, we sat outside in the sun on a cute town bench. After 20 min we noticed other people who arrived after us were going in, but thought they had been waiting elsewhere first so were actually ahead of us. Another 10 then 20 then 30 minutes...still no text. Finally, my husband went in to check and the young woman hosting said with a blaming tone, “well I texted you”, which we definitely never received. No second text, no peek out the door to see if we were out there. She just moved on. With an attitude of taking no responsibility, she said, “you can sit now”, but her rudeness made staying feel unpalatable. By then it was nearly lunch so we ended up at an incredible Mexican restaurant in town that saved the day!!
I can't share my experience because after taking our order, we waited 45 minutes for our food. After the waitress brought out the food of the people who came in after us, we asked where our food was. She wasn't sure and then said it got mixed up in the orders. My problem is she never once asked us if we needed anything, or explain why it was taking so long. Not sure we will go back.
Waitstaff were friendly. Diner is very tiny and cramped, a group came in and sat at the table behind us and there wasn't enough room for our group and there's to comfortably sit back to back without touching each other. Food was subpar, breakfast sandwich was dry and too overdone and the home fries weren't crispy at all with no flavor, almost like just leftover boiled potatoes.
My friends and I were looking forward to eating here but we were sadly disappointed. The decor is retro and well done. The food, however, is not. The menu looks great but is poorly executed. Two of us got heavily burned toast, one had undercooked eggs, the pancake was extremely dry and another said the loaded tots were not flavorful. We did not request new toast because the order had already taken a long time to arrive despite the diner being half empty. Sadly, an email to the owners went unanswered.
So my pregnant sister and I decided stop here cause it looked good. The place was cute, I love the aesthetic but prices for the food was ridiculous. 3.50 plus tax for 8oz of orange juice. Don’t ask me prices for the food cause they were ridiculous too. The water didn’t taste right either, definitely needed to be filtered you could tell it came from the tap which is fine if didn’t taste Metallica, then it took over an hour just to get our food which is understandable cause they didn’t seem to have a lot of people working but Ik other people don’t like to wait. My sandwich was great, I loved it no problems with it except for the chips being a bit stale and pickle tasting weird but my sister? Her sandwich was moldy and we had to get refund and I shared half of my sandwich with her cause she needed to eat something. I was excited to try this place but after this bad experience we sadly will not be returning again. I hope whoever reads my reviews takes what I say into consideration before going there.
My friends and I were looking forward to eating at an original diner in this charming town. The decor delivered with era appropriate details and the menu had an updated appeal. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed. Two of us were served burnt toast (black on all sides), one had tepid tea, another an undercooked egg and the buckwheat pancake was extremely dry. We did not send the food back as we had already waited a long time for our food despite the diner being half full. Even more disappointing, I sent an email to the owners two weeks ago with this same information and have not heard from them.
Have been going to the diner since I was a kid but the food over the past year has been taking a dive. This morning we ordered two breakfast sandwiches and a pancake. The eggs were so overdone they were like leather and the cheese was hard. I sat and waited for my to go order and could see the pancake being cooked and it also sat on the griddle way too long. Each cook poked it and kept it on while cooking other orders. And the opposite continues to be true of the home fries that automatically come with the sandwiches they are underdone and hard (not cooked through). Sad to say but I don’t think I will be going back anytime soon. Breaks my heart because I have been a loyal customer since I was a kid sitting at the counter with my dad.
The food was disgusting and over priced for what we got. I ordered bicuits and gravy with eggs on the side. Biscuit and gravy looked like canned cat food. They put my eggs on top of gravy and then placed them on separate plate (they had sausage gravy all over the bottom). My husband ordered chicken fingers which were under cooked. He asked for fries instead of the chips. Was charged for a side of fries and never got the chips it came with (if we had to pay for both we should have recieved both). Soda was warm and flat. Server was too busy talking to friends to bring our check. We will never go back. We went because the great reviews but this place is gross.
My husband and I tried Penn Yan's Diner for the first time today. First of all we are senior citizens and do not use our cell phones to order in a restaurant on an app. The waitress was very nice, and she found one menu for us to share and read. Then we ordered a roast beef open faced sandwich with gravy. The roast beef was not very tasty and seemed it was not very fresh. The gravy tasted like it should be dog gravy. He said it was the worst roast beef sandwich he had every eaten. I ordered a Reuben sandwich. The corn beef was so dry and tasteless and tasted old and burnt and the thousand island dressing was very sparse that i had to ask for more dressing. After i received a side of dressing, I couldn't finish the sandwich. It was that awful. The service was good, but the food was the worst we had ever had. That will be the last time we eat there.
