Opinions de Captain Kidd's Fish Market & Restaurant Redondo Beach
My family and I always love a good seafood restaurant and fish market combo! This is one of our new favorites! Ordered a seared Ahi fish sandwich, Alaskan Halibut plate and Lobster tail dinner! Amazing experience! The cashier was very knowledgeable about the fish dishes and their preparation, all the food was delicious and very well prepared my seared Ahi was perfect!
From the exterior, you wouldn’t expect many “healthy options” but I was completely surprised how delicious the tuna on salad was. After I had to clarify a couple times that I really didn’t want it cooked, I pretty much expected it to come out cooked through and through, but to my surprise it was perfect!
You would be hard-pressed not to find prepared seafood that you enjoy. Take it outside to one of the picnic tables and enjoy the ocean air. And, if you enjoy cooking, this is the place to buy fresh fish to take home; wonderful selection of fresh oysters too!
Been coming here since I was a kid, and I love this place! Fresh, tasty food, great service. I believe a few of the guys that work the fish market are still the same guys since I was in college so they seem to have really loyal staff who love their jobs! No place to get better fresh seafood in LA! Oh did I mention their garlic bread...try it and be hooked for life! If you're Filipino, you'll understand why the posted the pictures that I did...crab fat ftmfw!!! Hope I don't end up in the hospital for cholesterol!
The first time I visited this fun place in Redondo Beach. A bit loud and even somewhat chaotic during the order process but this just added to the character of the place. I had a traditional fish and chips but their menu is extensive. If you are looking for a genuine seafood place for an informal meal, look no further.
A Redondo Beach establishment, one to go out of your way to try... It's busy and hectic at peak times, but service is fast and efficient. You can stand on the "Market" line and choose your own fresh fish or shellfish, where they will weigh it and then have it cooked any way you like (suggested cooking method is listed in price card or you can ask them). Or you can wait in the "Restaurant" line and order from the set menu, which includes standards such as fish and chips, fish tacos, and grilled fish. Poke and side dishes are available. Seating area is large and on two levels, both are technically outside the building but both are covered year round with Permanent wood awning structure. They have their own parking lot (used to have to park at Marina lot and get validation, not any more) where you can park for 2 hours maximum for free. Dishes are served on compostable paper plates and you pick up your tray from the grill and sit down, cafeteria style. Water and cups are available for free, as are a selection of beers on tap. Prices are in the medium range: budget $20 per person with drinks for fish and chips. More for grilled salmon or swordfish steak, lobster roll, etc: $25 to $30... Every visit to the South Bay, I come here at least once, it's consistently good and I'm glad they are still around 40+ years.
I like how there’s literally a seafood market right inside the restaurant. It immediately makes the food even more fresh! We order a cup of clams and a cup of mussels, I swear, it’s not A Cup! I don’t know why, but the calamari taste good and different from those fancy Italian restaurants. The sitting area is huge! There’s outdoor sitting, too. It’s right next to the beach. It’s not a fancy seafood restaurant, but for some reason, everything taste better here, even the coke!!
We come here specifically for their live Dungeoness Crab. You choose the crab and they cook it for you on the spot. It doesn't get more fresh than that. They have lots of other seafood, as well. Their class and clam chowder are very good. This isn't your fancy dress type of place. You seat yourself, line your table with butcher paper and chow down. The staff is very nice. Last week I called the day before and asked if they could hold three crabs for me. Since I'm driving over 80 miles to get there, they wanted to make sure they had them set aside for me. They even cooked them so that they would be ready right at the time I told them we'd be there. If you like fresh crab, I highly recommend this place.
We have been going to Captain Kidd's Fish Market for over 20 years! They have the best crabs, NE Clam Chowder and Cioppino! Love the service too! Today, we had to go and get our crabs and saw our friend Salvador too! So yes, check this place out if you haven't been here at all! They follow all COVID-19 Guidelines, watch the lines carefully (social distancing experts), and staff are super friendly. My wife and I love this place!
Polite service when I ordered lunchdeal sandwich with cod..Llittle bit slow preparing but when I receaved it, it was worth waiting. Grilled cod was very good; crispy from the surface and soft inside. For dessert I picked half of douzen oysters and they were marvelleus; fresh, big and chewing sensation was just right. With oysters I had glass of sauvignon blanc. Wine was good enough and amount was generous. Prices: lunch sandwich ~10$ (cheap), Oysters 3.50$ each(reasonable to expensive) and wine 8$(reasonable). 4,5 stars from me.
I took pictures I'll try to upload for you. This place is located near Redondo Pier. There is no dress code and has a low key atmosphere. Their food is equisite. Large menu at market prices and a beautiful array and large selection of fish including all shell shellfish is tantalizing and extremely fresh. Jack runs the place and is very friendly and charming. All the staff is VERY friendly. Wonderful wine and beer selection to compliment any dish served! A lovely, beachy place for lunch or dinner. Rather rustic. Hurry in, they close at 9:00p.m. on weekends too.
Grilled Ole Bay Salmon Plate sets a high standard in this area. The Cajun seasoning on the Salmon was by far my favorite. Deep flavor with a nice bump of heat. I sat there and just savored the aftertaste. My fiancee had to litterally rip my plate from me before I exploded(not litterally). Anyways, price was average. Place was clean, tables cleared but sticky. Almost al of them :/ The Staff was great! Friendly, helpful and I felt like I was family. It is a must if you are down here! It will be a regular spot for us!
Great restaurant by the water. Choose your fresh seafood from the fish market to either cook at home or get them to cook it for you there. Blue point oysters were large and sweet with no brine flavour. Crabs were deliciously steamed and cracked for you. Peel n eat shrimp were roasted just right.
Love this place! From the outside it may look like a dive, but inside you will find an amazing selection of fresh seafood. There is also a restaurant with a great variety of prepared seafood dishes. There are also a few items for those not into seafood. I had the lobster roll which came with 2 sides (I chose fries and slaw). They have a great assortment of beers available as well. I found a great place to sit outside on the open patio in the back while I waited for my order number to be called. Love the vibe. It reminds me of some of my favorite seafood places at the beach in NC!
Went to this wonderful restaurant today! Seafood is great! I bought a burger, they didn't give me more fries and a salad! Everything was very tasty and not expensive! There is a toilet, the toilet is clean. It's important for me. The staff is polite! I was also able to charge my electric scooter, there was a terrace and sockets outside. Thanks! I really enjoyed eating and spending time with you! I recommend everyone to visit!
Recommend this place so much! We opted for the Market line, where you can pick your piece of fish which they prepare for you on the spot with two sides. Very friendly service, great service, and a beautiful location where you can eat right on the water!
My honey took me to his favorite restaurant today! Capt Kidds! The staff were pleasant and the service was good. We had shrimp cocktail, smoked salmon and oyster platters with garlic toast, clam chowder and veggies! Everything was delicious! Plus we walked the board walk to enjoy the beautiful ocean view on a gorgeous day! What a way to wind down our weekend!
4/19/25 We learned about Captain Kidd's by way of Facebook. My husband and I had one of THE BEST EXPERIENCES EVER!!! From the time that we arrived to the time that we left. We both had the Catfish Platters with Coleslaw & Fries.Lemonade was our choices for beverages. Everything was Fresh ,Hot 🔥🔥🔥 and Delicious. Oh yes, Prices are very reasonable. Special Thanks to Tom and Malaya. They both went over and beyond. They both really stood out in enhancing our experience today. We look forward to seeing you all again soon. Until then, God Bless You All.
Got the fish tacos - one fried and one sautéed- came with two sides, chose the hushpuppies and fresh fruit, and the whole lunch was exactly what I wanted after kayaking. The fish was fresh and very light, and even the fried filet wasn't heavy or overly breaded. The hush puppies were spot on. Also tried the lobster bisque, while it tasted good was missing in seasoning.
We’ve been here more than half a dozen times. And every time we are amazed at their great service and amazing food. We drive over 3 hours just to eat here. And it’s worth it. Recommend 💯 The best fish and chips ever and fresh oysters are a must. 😃😋
A local institution with both a fish market and restaurant serving a variety of fresh seafood, soups, tacos, and even a steak or two hiding on the menu. The location is right where the international boardwalk ends and the huge harbor parking lot begins... so there is plenty of parking. Line forms at the door and to the right is eat in and to the left is the fish market and oysters and such. You get a number and go find a table and get your condiment situation in order.. get plenty of napkins or you will keep returning for more as the food is so succulent and juicy. The fried foods are not overly salty or breaded and they taste like seafood not too greasy. The move here is simple grilled fish and then they also have good sides including all the usual suspects plus hush puppies. The clam chowder is thick and flavorful. Overall this rustic waterfront gem is more than just great food and people.. it is truly one of those iconic spots that is the fabric of Redondo Beach and a favorite for generations. Also a great place to take a nice walk after your meal and enjoy the ocean breeze and view. It is also right across from the larger hotels on Harbor Dr. so if you are visiting town this is great place to get some local flavor.
I love established restaurants, local, and with character. This place fit the bill. Celebrating 50 years serving this part of LA. Great food. Would eat here regularly if did not live 3000 miles away!
The best fresh seafood in LA County! I'm from Seattle and that's saying a lot!!!! So good! Everything! Casual outdoor seating.... come in with shorts and the kids!
Our favorite fresh seafood off the Redondo pier. If you’re debating between Captain Kidd’s and Quality Seafood come here. While Quality Seafood is still great and has a larger selection of speciality fish, we find the quality and atmosphere at Captain Kidds a bit better. It’s slightly further off the pier so the wait time during peak times are usually less and the service and ambiance is more pleasant in my opinion. We love the fish and chips, the seafood platter and whatever local fish they have grilled Cajun style. You can’t go wrong ordering any of the fresh fish here, and their lobster bisque is some of the best I’ve ever had. Don’t skip this place
It’s a place to buy seafood and a place to eat seafood- and I mean a lot of seafood! Huge selection from around the world! It’s mostly fresh and on ice. Buy it and the cook it options abound! To me, the prices were pretty high, but it is Redondo Beach and you are on the ocean, so not shockingly so. Staff were friendly and helpful. Kind of a must stop when you visit! So much fish at about 2x the price of Costco (eg salmon was $20/lb). Loved the shrimp and the hot prepared food (ciopinno, etc) the best. VictorB
Hands down the best clam chowder in the South Bay. This is not a thick, potato-heavy soup pretending to be chowder. Every spoonful is packed with real clam meat, rich flavor, and a perfectly balanced broth that actually lets the seafood shine. You can taste the quality immediately. Simple, honest, and done right. If you think you know clam chowder, this one will reset the bar. This is coming from someone who lived in Boston.
Love this place. GREAT fresh seafood any way you want it. They fry it, grill it whatever you want. Lots of choices of fish, lobster, crab, clams, everything! They also have the BEST clam chowder and also lobster bisque. The bisque is made with a delicious sherry sauce and the chowder is creamy and flavorful with lots of clam and potatoes. It’s right next to the pier so you can eat and then go walk around and enjoy the pier and shops. We love it there at Kaptain Kids!!!
Stopped by Captain Kidd’s in Redondo Beach and it’s a solid seafood spot right by the harbor. Very relaxed place and easy to enjoy, especially if you’re in the area and want seafood without overthinking it. We ordered a lot: shrimp fajita tray, whole grilled pompano, lobster bisque, stone crab (steamed and cracked), a sashimi plate, and fish & chips. The whole grilled pompano was probably my favorite of the day — simple and really well done. The lobster bisque and fish & chips also stood out and were both really satisfying. You can order off the menu or pick your seafood straight from the market, which is a nice option. The marina setting makes it a good spot to sit for a bit, especially with friends or family. Overall, a dependable South Bay spot for fresh seafood with a good location and a laid-back feel.
This place is the entirety of my must-do list when in the Redondo area. We have been here many times and every time the food has been incredible. Great price and value for great seafood. We have literally worked our way through most of the plates/platters on the menu and have yet to find one we did not like. Photos are of various plates from multiple visits.
An amazing place if you're a fan of fresh fish. The ambiance is not stylish, so you may not pick this location for a first date, but authentic with great 70s music. The service was great (it's an over-the-counter place), very helpful (I had questions), and very friendly. Their fish was amazing - just as you would expect from a place like this. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone who is in this area - or has a craving for fresh fish and wants to hang out in a place where you can smell the ocean. I made a 30+ detour just to dine here (mandatory with me to achieve 5 stars) and would happily do again.
I've been coming here since the 80's and love the indoor and outdoor seating. I always seem to get the oyster either fried or raw although I have tried the fish sandwiches and clam chowder. This one of my favorite spots to bring friends and relatives who enjoy the fresh fish selections and the atmosphere.

Love this place. I've been coming here since I was a kid. Great food.
Fresh sea food, made to order! A staple on Redondo Beach where you can pick your crabs, lobsters, mussels live or fresh and can get the chefs in house to cook to your liking. There is beer on tap and bottle and wine also available. Pepsi products for drinks. The staff is okay on customer service they're busy and moving all day so it's understandable if they don't have a few minutes to chat about the historical place or details on your order. It's a order at the counter and sit yourself market style restaurant no waiter to assist with anything.
This is my first time here, all my orders were delicious ,Deep fried Tilapia plate ,Deep fried,Red snapper plate, Grilled Jumbo shrimp 8 pieces 😍. The service was fast 👍🏻 I will come again,I recommend it. But, Check your receipt before you leave. in the menu, You will get two sides with your plate, but casher charged me for sides, I didn’t why? 🤷🏻♀️. also i chose shrimp (1/2 pound ) at price $22 but i paid $31,, is it for cooking? Plus plate charge $4.99
This was our first time. There is two parts to the restaurant. One side the meals are posted and ready to cook. We went to the left side where the fresh fish was located. We got a nice piece of Salmon and large wild caught shrimp. You get two sides and there is a fee to cook the food. It was absolutely tasty. I also got the lobster bisque soup and it was good. Loved the hush puppies. Plenty of seating indoor and out. Very close to the pier!
Nice place to relax and soak up the sun. I had the fish and chips to keep it simple. And I tried the Lobster Bisque. The fish was really fresh.I was very flaky and tasty. The soup was awesome too.You start on one side of the building where there 2 lines separated. One is for fresh seafood.Where theres a nice variety choices. The other line is for the cooked food. You pay find a place to sit.And they call when it’s ready.
Staying at a hotel near the beach so I was looking forward to some good Seafood. I'm from the Pacific Northwest so Clam Chowder is a must for any side when waiting for the main entree. Unfortunately, I've been spoiled with our hometown greatness. Yes, it's light, but I enjoy a creamier Clam Chowder...Captain Kids was soupy and surprisingly bland. I think the flavor left with the Garlic Fries. Fish was fantastic though. Exactly what I'd expect.
It's a good place to eat when everything else is packed. The grilled salmon was good. The clam chowder was ok. Overall it's a good place. Customer service is great!! Definitely give it a chance.
I've had the clam chowder in San Francisco at fisherman's wharf and it was sooooo good and i found this fishmarket/Restaurant and had to try it , its ok , I was satisfied and the shrimp fajitas was good ,I'd definitely recommend to others and we'll be back for sure ,Ps , the price was good too.
Came here for late lunch after a drive in the beach area of Redondo last January. It was no longer busy so we got served in no time. We ordered the clam chowder which was really creamy and tasty. We also got the shrimp platter good for two which was reasonably priced in my opinion. The taste was acceptable and I appreciated the unlimited variants of hot sauces available to pair perfectly with your seafood. Overall, our dining experiences here were pleasant.
A great place for some fresh seafood. Casual and clean dining area. It’s a very laid back atmosphere with plenty of seating. Plenty of parking in the area around the building or in the structure. When you come in, there are two lines, one for fresh seafood you want to take home and another line for dine-in. Good variety of fish if you wanted to take home and cook yourself If you’re ever in the mood for some fresh seafood, it’s been our go to for years. Their fish and chips are great. Pair with a nice beer and it’s a nice combo. We didn’t get them on this occasion but I can recommend it. Personally as I eat a lot of tuna and salmon during the week, I tend to opt for more of the “white” fish when I come here. Highly recommend the swordfish or halibut plates. They come with two choice of sides. I prefer to get corn on the cob and will usually alternate between Cole slaw or rice pilaf depending on my mood. I don’t get the veggies as they tend to come from frozen and not as fresh For the fish plates, I always go grilled with simple seasoning. It’s always cooked perfectly here. Their clam chowder is decent. Not the best but flavorful enough if you want a something warm with your meal. Popcorn shrimp is plenty for the portion. It’s a nice snack. Another dish I would recommend is their fried whole fish plate. We got the pompano and it’s a nice sized fish with plenty of meat on the bone. Sometimes it’s fun to “dig” into your food.
I had the calamari with clam chowder , and a salad. The calamari was okay, nothing special, some were extra chewy. The "clam" chowder was actually chunky potato soup with some clam. Had better at loc…

The vibe is great. Cool fish market and restaurant mix. Loved the indoor outdoor space, specially during rainy days. Price is a bit high. Food was just okay.
An authentic seafood experience! Not the place for anyone who is finicky because it's a fish market. The quality of the food is decent and it's reasonably priced. Basically self service, you choose what you want-they cook it and you bring it to your table. Understandably deep fried food will have a longer wait than your steamed and boiled options.
Captain Kidd's has been on my list to try for a while, and I finally made it. The atmosphere is decent, with a nice view of the water, but the whole experience starts on a sour note with the paid parking. It's a bit of a shock to pay just to park at a restaurant. As for the food, it was okay, but nothing to write home about. The mussel cup I had was fine—the mussels themselves were cooked properly, but the overall flavor was a bit underwhelming. The calamari appetizer was in a similar boat; it was cooked well, but it wasn't the best I've had. The same went for the clam chowder soup—it was edible, but lacked the rich, creamy flavor I was hoping for. Overall, it's a perfectly acceptable place to grab a bite if you're in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it, especially with the hassle and cost of parking.
First let me say, the staff here is fantastic…very much the highlight of the visit. Ordered a lobster roll, fries and corn on the cob. Lobster roll was “small”, the lobster was over cooked/tough/dry and had bits of shell. Fries were ok Corn on the cob was soft/mushy. Beer was good If I’d spent $20 total, I wouldn’t have been upset, but for $35 + $7 tip, I wasn’t thrilled with my meal.
I came here for my birthday 07/05/2025 and overall my experience was alight. (Not the best) I expected higher expectations but I did choose this place because my brother said they have the best seafood. When my brother place his food order it was my turn to let the cashier know what I wanted. When I mention I wanted lobster she told me and my brother to go to the other side to order the lobster. He asked her why I can’t order it here and she said it’s because it two separate transactions and markets? Long story short we went to the side and waited almost 40 minutes to place my lobster order. And the guy ask my brother would you like any sides with that? And he said we order sides already on the order side of the main line. 🤦♀️ This line set up doesn’t make any sense. And the worst part was by the time we finished ordering my food, my family already received their food and was eating at the table. My garlic fries were lukewarm and my lobster had a grill taste to it. I like mimes tender and moist. Would I come back maybe
First visit back in a decade and it was just okay. The first thing I noticed was that the seafood portions got very small. They try to make up for it with a mountain of fries, but rather than incre…
The food is OK, prices are reasonable, service is self service and the picnic tables are extremely uncomfortable. On the positive side, you can smell the ocean but a remodeling would be welcomed.

Got 2 shrimp skewers. Expensive. While cooked decently, the shrimp were tiny and dried out. Sides: corn cobs ok, hush puppies great. I stay at a nearby hotel regularly but will try other places before returning.
Ok so you up the price for a lobster roll. At least put some lobster on it. The most disappointing lobster roll. The popcorn shrimp was good. Pics show the pathetic lobster roll. And, there was no butter and asked for mayo there was none. Asked for the butter and you would have thought I asked for their first born child.
We have been going here for decades. This was the first time after covid. The quality was well below par. The sea bass was like mush (older not fresh). Those round things were suppose to be chicken strips ( over cooked & dry). The jumbo shrimp were NOT juicy and succulent. The pricing is on the high side. Can not say if this is now the trend over here. When you come in.... To your left is the seafood market. Pick what you want and sides. They will prepare it to your liking. Or go to your right and select dishes off the menu. They do serve beer & wine. This particular trip was a bust. Luckily we brought the watermelon.
This dated-looking restaurant is basically surrounded by a parking lot. More of a view of cars than the ocean. The food was not fresh. I may have food poisoning from the oysters and I am suspicious about whether the Fanny Bays were really that because they didn’t resemble them. They also were shucked with a mallet leaving shards of shell within them. Further, the thin crab cakes were filled with hot peppers, overpowering any crab flavor, assuming there was any to begin with. This often is a strategy to disguise flavorless or, worse yet, old crab.
The restaurant was busy but very unorganized having different lines for different food items. The steamtable precooked seafood items were too salty. We ordered an clams and another of mussles. Broth was too oily & salty and was not drinkable. Corn was so overcooked that there were no flavor even with butter added. The Steamed (cooked to order food) was quite slow. We ordered 2 steamed local crabs, which was overcooked. It was cracked well a d easy to eat. Some lines need to get a number for service. The staff was not efficient and don't communicate with the customers. Lemon wedges were not offered for the seafood items. Not even wet wipes. Looking around, many people ordered their seafood items fried. Everyone had to wait in line for the unisex bathrooms just to wash their hands afterwards.
Ordered take out of fish and chips. Was totally inedible. Fish so soft it fell apart. It was like fish mashed potatoes. I couldn't even eat it with a fork. Just a mushy mess. Will never order from he…

Very disappointing lunch. The lobster roll used frozen, dried out lobster with little taste, the corn on the cob was frozen, the cantaloupe was not yet ripe. Very expensive (draft soda $3.50!) fish…
We were at this restaurant with another couple. At this restaurant you pre pay and then sit down and wait for your order number to be called. After TWO hours we did not receive our order. My husban…
I am a long term resident of RB and have gone to this restaurant for years . Tonight was the worse experience that I ever had at this place . I ordered at 7pm to go and even tipped. I noticed that at least 5 other people were receiving their food . At 730 I asked the counter person what was happening . I was told that my fried fish was pending . I had ordered char grilled . I explained this and was told that they would fix the order and provide this wrongly prepared fish for free. Another 1/2 hr, still waiting with my young daughter with me and the rest of my family waiting in the car . A Young Latinx woman at the front was the only one who helped me and finally got me to the manager when there had been a problem receiving the second fish. I didn’t receive it- I did get a refund from the manager . When I arrived home, what did I get- not the chargrilled that just came out - but the deep fried fish that had been sitting for 1/2hr!!! I am extremely upset and disappointed at the service and disdain for my customer experience . The other items , the clam chowder, the sides were good- but the fish and the mussels were subpar. I am small business owner and I understand that there can be off days- people can make mistakes . My problem and the reason that I am writing this rare review was the disrespect and disdain for my position and for my family . They just did not care .
Ordered shrimp tray and shrimp was way way over cooked. Also ordered Cajun fries, and fries had no seasoning. They mistakenly forgot. Will not return for over cooked shrimp.
My family has been coming here for over 30 years. I honestly couldn’t tell you why. When I’m in the area I sometimes stop here if Quality Seafood (far superior) is too busy. Over the years the quality, service and food has gotten worse and worse. The staff who take your orders are friendly and courteous, but the back of house/order fulfillers are awful. This last Sunday was the last straw for us. We ordered the calamari appetizer for $12.99+tax and we were served the most pathetic amount of calamari either of us have ever seen. The attached photo is what we were served. I decided this needed to be documented before I took a bite. We just decided then and there to never come back.
Very disappointed. Ordered clams and mussels. No flavor in the broth at all considering it's seafood from the sea. Then we had lobster tacos which I can say it's overpriced and yuck. No flavor. Only thing I can say that was worthwhile is the garlic fries.. today's experience destroyed all the other year's memories of this place..
