Oh yum. I treat myself to fried food about 2x per year. When I treat myself I go to Gene's. Never disappointed.
This place should have a historical marker. It's been there forever. Great Shakes!!!!
Excellent fish fries and reasonable prices. Gets crowded on Fridays, especially during Lent.
Excellent food and service. Beautiful view overlooking the albany skyline. Gets better every year!
Excellent food, excellent service. Will definitely be back next season.
Awesome as usual- a staple of the community for over 62 years! Great people, good food!
Fries were perfectly crispy, and the haddock was very fresh.
Long wait for them to reopen, they have the best fish fry.
Peak food
So good! Best fish fry around! ... I can't get enough of this coleslaw!! 😋👍👍
Great place for fish, burgers, shakes, etc. They are closed for the season.
Very nice people selling great food.
Good fairly large size fish fry. Seating outdoors at picnic tables in shade.
Food excellent atmosphere good closing Friday for season
Great food, the seafood was the best. Remember CASH ONLY!
I have been going there for 60 years and food great.
Great food, friendly staff, reasonable prices
Friendly staff, awesome food, can't beat their tartar.
Love this summertime favorite!! Fish fingers are amazing! Great food, friendly service and they added shakes and soft serve ice cream! Brilliant!!
Love Gene's food and the people there. Been around since before I was born, and it shows in the quality of food and the atmosphere.
5 star food and even better customer service. Such nice people!
Best fish around! Knocks Ted's fish fry out of the box! Inexpensive and excellent food. Very busy and expect to wait a bit. Not a long wait either ☺️
Great food, yummy milk shake and the adorable birds.. what else could you want... we a bathroom might be nice, instead of having to walk over to the gas st
Run by 16 year olds, but they fry some great fish. Breading was perfect not too much not too little just right.
Great place, and long time staple. Food is made as the order is taken. Comes out hot and fresh. Don't forget to get a milkshake.
Wonderful fish 🐟 fries. The staff are always very friendly and helpful. A must-go place for the summer.
Great place for fried seafood. Nothing fancy and that is perfect. Cash only, outdoor seating - simple and worth the wait.
Quintessential Capital District fish fry. Best shakes (hand made with real ice cream) around!
There's not much to it, but clearly they're doing something right to have been open so long. Friendly staff and yummy fried seafood.
Fantastic food, great prices, great staff, been going there for years. Glad they are open. Just have to follow rules.
My husband and I have been coming here for years and they never disappoint ! Best fish fry in the Capital District 😊
Literally the BEST and I mean the BEST fish spot outside of Atlanta, the homemade tater sauce and in-house fruit drinks alone will have you coming back
Neighborhood fish fry. Counter service outdoor picnic tables under awning. Open Memorial Day thru sometime in September.
It is really nice to eat at Gene's. The food is prepared great and then eating at the picnic table is nice.
Great fish fry! My only complaint: please get foot long buns for fish. Fish Fry sticks out 2" on both sides of bun rendering it useless for me and my wife. With a longer bun I wouldn't have to throw out 30% of my fish. Likewise, French fries and cole slaw are excellent. Can't address their other menu items since I've been ordering same thing once a week for 19 years. Casual outdoor covered dining (picnic tables) available, or carry-out. Cash only but ATM available. This place is an area institution for good reason. It's great!
Great place for delicious fish fries. The eating area is outside at picnic tables and covered so it's only open in the summer. The fish is really good with large servings and the coleslaw is excellent. It's a small service area that can be crowded lunch and dinner but the good is worth the wait.
Great place for a quick bite. Delicious Seafood. The Best Coleslaw I've ever eaten. They've been consistent with their service, good food and drink for many years. Locals you want to have continued success. The views are absolutely breathtaking especially at sunset.
Had a broiled combination seafood dinner. It was delicious!!!!! The scallops, shrimps and fish were cooked perfectly. Don't forget the curly fries and cold slaw. It was the best/freshest fish i have had in a long time. Definitely going back. Should have taken a picture.
Went here last Friday. I wanted to say that I love this place. The food was excellent. I especially loved the fish frys. I have missed coming here and I am glad that I have come back. Will be coming here again soon. They are the best place to get a fish fry. Would recommend that you go there yourself. You won't regret it. Thank you to all to the staff who do an excellent job there. Thank you 😊 💓
I cannot wait for Gene's to open. I don't know where the people who criticized Gene's came from but every meal I have eaten there is awesome. No one has fish fries, onion rings or anything else like Gene's. Their Tartar Sauce is the best I have ever had. So people keep your criticism to yourself. Thank you very much.
Delicious food, friendly service, and only a few minutes wait for the order to finish! The fish fry, clam strips and Cole slaw are amazing and highly recommended! This place is so good, i wish it were open all year round!!
Genes is a nice quaint place where you go on a summer day to get good food with good company. There are lots of birds around to look at. The food is excellent.
An Albany classic (in East Greenbush). Scallop rolls are outstanding, best I've had outside of the Cape. Same with the clam strips. Cheap, quick, easy, roadside eats. Go early, they close at 7 or 8.
Never had a bad meal here ever. I always forget about this place because they aren't open year-round. Hopefully the guy had good insurance and you'll get a whole new restaurant out of this.
Gene's is just a mile from where I live. There's a fish store across the street but Gene's gets all the customers during the summer. Their dinners are great value.
Gene’s fish fry was very good! I got a fish sandwich with their spicy chili sauce. It was very delicious, it hit the spot. The service and staff are extremely nice as well. As a man from Ireland once said, I’d give up my first child to go to Gene’s everyday.
Gene's Fish Fry has a great fish fry. Gene's has a full menu including fish, hamburgers, fries, chicken fingers, and milkshakes. The fish here is fresh, fried, and fantastic! Make sure to try their homemade tartar sauce; it's easily the best in the area. The coleslaw is also very good. Ordering food here is easy. Just go to the first window after you make your pick. They will call your name when the food is ready. If eating at the restaurant you will get a tray for your food. They also do takeout. The restaurant is open seasonally. All seating is outdoors on picnic benches. On a clear day you see the Corning Tower in the distance. When driving here the entryway is easy to miss. You will to find a narrow road that goes by the restaurant and to the parking lot. The restaurant is surrounded by big box stores and across the street from the Off Shore Pier restaurant! If you live in the Capital Region this restaurant is a must! Try it as soon as you can.
The food is great, the service is very good. The dining area is picnic tables outside. You can watch traffic go by.
We love this place. Friendly staff, solid food, great milkshakes. There's a comfortable covered, open-air eating area that's kept clean. This is one of our favorite places to grab an easy dinner on summer weekends!
I'm such a fish fry fanatic this would definitely be one of the top 5 fish fry I've had and the French fries were perfectly crispy a little more salt and they'd be perfect I definitely recommend stopping by for a quick bite their burgers are also fantastic but don't listen to me go try it you will not be disappointed
We were originally going to eat at the place across the street but they don’t accept cards. We called here and they said yes so we came over. We ordered the Halibut meal and the mixed seafood plate. The food was fried perfectly. No oil soaking the plate and the breading held on just right. The only change I’d recommend is to better season their macaroni salad. It needs chopped onions, more celery, dill and sour cream. It’s a bit bland as we had it but nothing to really complain about because we came for the seafood. Everything tasted very fresh and the prices were a decent value. Enjoyed our food a lot and will definitely come back.
While we ordered take out, it felt like those eating on site were enjoying themselves. The fish fries are outstanding and the onion rings were delicious as well. Get the shakes if you’re in the mood.
Along with the Off Short Pier fish restaurant across the street, Genes is a definite must if you have an urge for fried fish. I highly recommend the mixed seafood dinner. Some people have complained that the portions are too small. Well not this meal. You get fried clams, shrimp, scallops and haddock. Along with fries and coleslaw. I was definitely full after this meal and it was delicious. It hit the spot. Genes has been in business for a very long time. They are opened seasonally, and close labor day weekend. They do have burgers, chicken tenders etc. I never had those, but I noticed the burgers are sliders. If you are a hardy eater, just order a few. Genes also has shakes and ice cream.
The place is an institution. The food is good quality. The fries taste like they are made from russet potatoes. Haddock is great. Clams are tender. Onion rings are a treat. And I always get a mocha shake. Friendly people and no wait if you get there early. Nice picnic tables and pretty hanging baskets of flowers.
Gene's Fish Fry was a great find. We stop at this exit to eat on our way up to the Adirondacks and have always seen it next to the McDonald's but have never checked it out. This time we did and we are extremely happy. It is an old time stand that sells mostly fish but some other things. It has a little bit of indoor seating and it has a whole patio on the side, so in this season where outdoor seating is essential it really worked for us. My wife and I both got the fish fry, which was a fried haddock sandwich on a bun. It was delicious, a huge portion of perfectly cooked fish with light breading. The prices are ridiculously cheap but believe me the quality is high. This will be a regular stop on our trip up north. Highly recommended! Hey Google turn it off
Food and service was great. The only complaint was that the fish and fries were put on a small plate
Great fish fry with fair pricing. Fries were just OK.
If time travel was possible this is how the year 2001 would look and feel inside and out.
CASH ONLY! OPEN SEASONALLY. We had fish frys. They were good but a little over cooked.
Great place to bring the family although you need to have cash they don't take credit cards
Best fish fry I've had in a long time. I heard good things and decided to give them a try. Im glad I did.
The service was fast and efficient. I had the clam roll wich was good but the macaroni salad was bland, overall it was decent but nothing to write home about..
Love this place. Always have and amways will!!! I'm lmao @ the person who gave a bad review.... He explains how he hates it then at the end says they forgot his cheese. It freaking happens!! If you are That mad about it, and you gave them that hard of a time and that bad of a review, Maybe u are one of the "entitled" ppl who makes those who serve u miserable and you should stay home.from now on. I have never had a had experience here EVER!!!! And it does NOT smell like mold whatsoever!
Typical fish fry place. I enjoyed it. Not too expensive. Food was fine. People seemed nice. Nothing fancy or special.
With regards to my review below, Gene's Fish Fry apologized for the inconvenience for the poor service and have us a $20 gift certificate for our next visit which was today. This time everything was great. Thank you to the management for their service regarding this. After waiting all winter for Gene's to open I was EXTREMELY disappointed. On 5/30/2019, I purchased 3 Fish Fry plates with onion rings plus an extra piece of fish to go. The meals were going to different homes, so Instead of 3 different plates, two of the dinners were stuffed on one plate leaving the buns extremely soggy. The extra piece of fish wasn't even half of a piece of fish and didn't fill the bun. Additionally the onion rings were not a nice golden brown but burnt to just this side of not being able to eat them. Not sure I want to go back if this is the type of service to be expected.
Still the best seasonal fish shack in the area. Portions are starting to get skimpy tho. Like most businesses, the option are often to up prices or cut portions. Guys, from the heart of everyone in East Greenbush and Rensselaer, we don't mind paying a little more for a decent sized meal. We can take it. The food is totally worth paying a little more.
This is a old school place to get a good burger or fish fry. The portions are small so go for a snack not a full meal. They are only open for the season so get it before the end of summer. Well done.
Of course the first time I go is the last day it was open for the season. The milkshakes are sooo good. Mine was light and airy and not heavy like a lot of milkshakes I’ve had. The staff is great and the food is good. Can’t wait until it reopens!
Perfectly cooked piece of fish. French fries were delicious as well. Also had a shake, which was very thick and yummy!Very friendly service. Plenty of parking. Definitely recommend this place for the freshest fish around. Old place that reminds me of the older ice cream stands in and around the capital region. Comfortable and clean. Outside dining only. 4 stars due to being a little on the pricey side, but worth it.
Was not impressed by the quality of the food. Was the first time eating there and definitely will be my last.
Don't bother with the hot dogs... pretty "blah". Gonna try the fish next time I go back... probably should have done that to begin with.
Not as good as it used to be. Smaller fish fry and overcooked onion rings and french fries. Disappointed.
They should invest in some salt. Clam roll needs help. Haddock was decent .
NICE FRESH FISH ,BUT SMALL PORTION, AND CMON $5.25 a fish fry!
Got takeout. The food was good but got home, realized they gave me 5 onion rings for $5+ dollars 😲. A dollar an onion ring!! OMG, so disappointed😞!!!
Wanted to really like this family run place. The fish fry I had was a little overcooked and was left slightly disappointed. Coleslaw was really sweet as well.
Kind of mediocre place. The fry was alright but the selection was really limited. There is a different seafood place across the street that does a better job.
Not enough cheese on the cheese fries..the fish fries were on the smaller side and appeared a little burnt..we bought 4 fish fries..a bacon cheese burger & 2 large cheeses fries...cost like $43.00....I wouldn't do there again...
Don't go if you're hungry. The portions are small and will leave you wanting more. The tartar sauce tasted like mayonnaise with a few chunks of pickle added. The chocolate shake came in a small (approx 12 oz) cup with a tiny straw to match. The fish itself was tasty, but again, not enough in this meal to fill me up. Outdoor picnic tables are offered under a canopy, so bring a sweater if it's chilly.
Fish is fresh. You wont get sick. Pleasant environment. Weird hand written signs all over. Teds is much better. I gave it another chance this year. Portions of fish are small. Off Shore Peer is better. I cant stand the hot chilli and no cocktail.
Haddock was decent but everything else was lacking flavor. Everything needs salt!
Figured I’d try this place out but honestly it’s not that impressive. Soggy breading and soft mushy un seasoned fish. Teds is way better.
Fish fry was good, small but flavor and crisp was good. Condiments were self served and sitting in the sun and flies.(skipped the condiments). Ordered a coffee shake, got a vanilla shake which was ok. Onion rings were gritty and bland. The big turn off was the lack of appreciation for your business $3.50 ATM charge because they don't except credit cards. Gene's doesn't even come close to Ted's for the same price and they except credit cards. Even Doby's (know for their subs)in West Sand lake has better fish fry and onion rings and except credit cards as well.
Very disappointed, Fish and onion rings were over cooked . First time trying this place not sure if I'll try again. Felt like I wasted over 30 dollars on lunch for 2. Just not good .
I have heard people rave about Gene's Fish Fry for a few years now, but today was my first time trying them. Other than the people being so nice, I have no idea what there is to rave about. Hands down, the worst onions rings I've had in years. The 3 of us here all agreed. I'd say Sysco onion rings, but they honestly weren't even that good. I had the mixed seafood dinner. The mac salad that came with it was so bland, it almost tasted like straight up plain noodles. The scallops were fishy. The shrimp look like the cheap, breaded shrimp you get from run-of-the-mill fast food places, but they tasted ok. Clam strips were nothing special and I've had about the same from boxed, frozen. A little tough, though. The fish itself was ok, but a little bland, like it needed salt. I will say, however, their cocktail sauce was pretty good. My wife got the chicken finger dinner. Sysco-ish in nature and not special. The fries were gross and looked like they had seen better days. Our 4yr old enjoyed her grilled cheese. I had a bite and will say it was pretty good, lol. The good things: They got our order correct and they were very nice.
To go order: they stapled a piece of paper over paper plates. Seriously. One cup of sauce for three dishes. I understand cutting costs, but really?
I really would like to know where these people eat at that gave this place a good review…..for the lady who said this place blows Ted’s out the water I think she needs a brain scan… the fish was so bland and little and clams were so tough and taste like store bought my wife ate one scallop and threw em away… Onion rings are Sysco bought we literally threw everything away and on our way to Ted’s as we speak… This place food is horrible but there customer service is awesome…..
Terrible shrimp basket. Equivalent to what you would find at the concession stand at a little league game. No hand breaded shrimp here! No handcut fries either, just frozen crappy ones just like the shrimp. Disgusting. Also the place smells like mold when you walk in. Wont be returning.
2021 - My fish was ok, but onion rings not so much,My husband's Clam roll, my fish fry and onion rings all crowded onto one plate.I finally moved my fish fry onto the paper back the plate had come in.My husband's Clam roll looked like it had been ripped apart and put back together, the clams were smashed into roll ...The condiments to pick up were in dirty stainless containers.Picnic tables were sticky to touch. Ok
Food had no flavor. We got the fish plates with fries and mac salad and there was no flavor, no seasoning whatsoever. Very disappointed in thr unflavored food. We wont be returning
Ordered the seafood combo, it was.... extremely poor quality. The shrimp in a few cases were just breading, the scallops were the size of a pea with huge breading. I won't return here. I am very disappointed.
First time going here, right off the bat I hear my shoes sticking to the dingy tiles on the floor. I've never been to a "restaurant" so dirty under the tables were greasy like there were years of cakened gum. The condiment station has in plain view caked dirt and appears to be oily. Every decoration including the shelves had dust and grime on them. And they play radio music off a gainy cheap radio no younger than 10 years old. Everything in this place is dirty and gross like it's never been cleaned. Now the food,I got a clam roll and a fish fry. Clam is fried frozen from a bag(no suprise) but even after putting extremely little effort in this establishment they manage to take it further by having stale buns to serve you. Now the fish fry which I'd imagine is why you come to this disgusting location was breaded with no binder, just water and flour,it has no *****ing flavor and the breading fell apart because they only use water to bind;the fish didn't even have salt. They said it was cod but had the texture and skin of haddock which is whatever but to put it on a stale bun that immediately fell apart from putting your garbage fish on the bun without straining the oil is a sin. The food is garbage I just threw out the fish as it was inedible and I eat at real restaurants and long gone are the days of having a pallate of a child. I should've know by the trailer crowd there that the food would lack any of the traits that make food good, there is no fat, salt, acid or heat it's just fried garbage in a disgusting restaurant that sells food to people who crave cuisine from the depression era. If you enjoy this food you haven't ever grown passed eating kraft mac and cheese this place is the worst restaurant I've been to in the capital region of which I've been to most from Vietmaneese,Thai,Polish,Korean,American, and fusion restaurants. Eat somewhere better this isn't real food,it's 1 parallel step from corner store delis.
Run by a bunch of high school kids, absolutely not what it used to be.. Condiments are left out in the sun and attended to by flies. No idea when the oil in the fryers were last changed, if they were ever. They forgot my cheese for the cheese fries I ordered (it isn't real cheese) and literally had to have a five minute arguement with a sixteen year old before I had to rip open the bag to physically show them that they hadn't given me any cheese. When you have a place with no adult managerial authority, what do you expect? Never going back, absolutely disgusted that this place was ever bought again. Needs to go out of business.. Again!
