I had a great experience at Portillo’s. The service was friendly and fast. The Italian beef sandwich was flavourful and satisfying, and the spicy chicken was just as good and The big burger bundle.I also really liked the grab-and-go section—it’s convenient to pick up everything from buns and condiments to Italian beef packages. Overall, a great spot for a quick and tasty meal.
First time trying a Chicago dog. A little difficult to take a bite with all the toppings, but overall it was very tasty. My wife got the Spicy Chicken sandwich and mentioned it had a light and crunchy batter, the chicken was juicy, and the spice level was manageable. We shared onion rings which also had a nice crunch. We also had the chocolate cake, which could have been a little more moist, but was delicious and not overly sweet. One critique would be the process of picking up your food after ordering. You order in line on the right side of the restaurant and then wait for your food on the left side. The restaurant was very noisy so it was difficult to hear the numbers being called, and the screen was too small to see the numbers when further away. This process could be improved by having the orders called more loudly, the numbers on the screens shown larger (rather than inside of a bag icon), or with additional screens strategically placed in the restaurant.
Been wanting to stop in since they opened finally made the move today. Was a little overwhelmed with the menu at first, but Maribel and Sam guided us in the right direction, and I’m glad they did! Food was amazing, service was spectacular, she even checked in on us to see how everything came out! Was our first time in and definitely will not be our last! Highly recommend stopping by! Ps. Was too full to try the cake shake but it’s on my list for next time!!
We were looking for somewhere to have lunch. When I looked this up one of the reviews said if you haven’t been here, you would need to get here now. And when I read that, I was like OK let’s go see what this is about and I was very happy I went. My daughter had a chili cheese hotdog. I had the Italian beef. My husband had the bacon cheeseburger. All of us enjoyed our food. I was very surprised at how large the inside of that restaurant is. I had no idea because on the outside it does not look that big. I will definitely be returning and I am very glad I read that review!
Edit: Recently returned to try the Italian beef and sausage combo since it's now on the menu. Also, fries are cooked in beef tallow. It's a hit! Drive thru was extremely fast, and staff was friendly. Tastes just like I'm in the Chi. Upped rating for 4 to 5 stars. Tastes just like the Portillos I remember, but they dont have my favorite order- beef and italian sausage combo. Super sad face. Glad they are here, hope they bring italian sausage to the menu in Houston. Drive-thru looks like it moves decently fast. Line was not long. Employees are friendly and efficient, someone even offered to take my tray and trash. Is it life-changing? No, but it certainly is nostalgic. Now, I can’t wait for Garrett’s to open at the airport :-)
Portillo’s in Richmond is a gem for comfort food lovers! We ordered a little bit of everything to get the full experience, and it did not disappoint. The burgers were juicy with just the right amount of char on the patty, layered with fresh toppings and a soft, toasted bun that held up beautifully. The fries were golden, crispy on the outside yet fluffy inside—the perfect sidekick. We also tried one of their signature hot dogs, and it was spot-on: a snap with every bite, topped with all the classic fixings in true Chicago style. And then, the star of the meal—their famous chocolate cake. Moist, rich, and decadently frosted, it’s the kind of dessert you’ll still be thinking about days later. The atmosphere is casual but lively, and the staff made us feel right at home. Every plate that came out looked just as good as ours, which tells me consistency is a big deal here. We’re already planning our next visit—this is going to be a regular stop for us!
Portillo's selections consists of burgers, hotdogs, or Italian sandwiches. Though it's not a wide array, the food was done pretty well. The burgers are probably the best item on the menu. The hot dog was decent, but next time I'd probably put my own toppings than one of their classic selections. The cheese for the cheese fries was delicious.... But it was basically cheese whiz if that doesn't float your boat. Tables were clean. Staff was friendly. Would come back soon.
Classic Chicago flavor with style. The restaurant is clean, well-built, and full of energy. Their Italian beef sandwich is rich and savory, the gravy is hot and delicious, extra gravy is a must, soaks into the fresh bread just right. The hot dogs are spot-on, loaded with fresh toppings and packed with flavor. A must-try for anyone craving authentic, original sandwiches done right.
I've been to several Illinois locations and even one in Arizona. The experience at a Portillo's is always the same. AMAZING!!! Food tastes the same from location to location. It's absolutely delicious. This Richmond, Texas location is huge!! It has a great vibe to it. Great for large groups and nice for a party of one. Burgers are delicious, but you definitely need to try an Italian beef if you've never had one. And please don't leave with a Portillo's shake!!! May I suggest the Chocolate Cake Shake??? You're in for a treat!!!
A Must-Visit for Hot Dog Enthusiasts: Portillo’s Richmond If you’re on the hunt for an authentic Chicago-style hot dog experience, look no further than Portillo’s Richmond. This vibrant eatery brings the flavors of the Windy City to Texas, serving up mouth-watering hot dogs that are sure to delight. Each Chicago-style hot dog is perfectly crafted with a poppy seed bun, mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, a dash of celery salt, and sport peppers—no ketchup in sight! Beyond the hot dogs, Portillo’s offers a variety of other delicious options, including their famous Italian beef sandwiches and decadent chocolate cake shakes. The atmosphere is lively, though some may find it a bit loud, but the service is friendly and attentive. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, Portillo’s Richmond is a must-visit for anyone craving a taste of Chicago’s iconic street food.
We ordered at the drive thru. I know that Portillo's is known for their Italian Beef Sandwich and Hot Dog, but I wanted to try their burgers. I got the Double Bacon Burger with Cheese and a Large Fries. The burger was delicious and very flavorful. The charbroil flavor comes through. The fries are crinkle-cut, which were very crispy on the exterior while tender on the inside. I love the fries! I might stick to the burgers at Portillo's from now on.
Food is awesome!! Makes you feel like home grilled food is what you are eating. The atmosphere is good, place was Crowded and somehow it didn’t feel bad at all. Ordering the food is rather quicker than expected, food came out super hot, delicious and did not take long. I would definitely go again soon. Only downside is that it was our first time and we how or why we were not given any plates, maybe they don’t give out plates. But either way it was awesome!!
Clean and super spacious. Burger is a pretty good deal and tasted pretty good. The beef sandwich, imho, shouldn’t be served without peppers or something to give it more texture/flavor chance. Bread was good for it but man… that lifeless meat needs some help.
Giant fast food place! Order from kiosk or go up to the counter to order with cashier. I had Chicago Hot dogs family had burgers and salads. They are very good no complaints here.
The opening of Portillo's Chicago Hotdog in Richmond was a highly anticipated event for us. Our positive experience dining at the restaurant in Chicago three years ago fostered a lasting appreciation. Guests can expect to enjoy Portillo's signature offerings, including Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, char-grilled burgers, distinctive crinkle-cut French fries, and the celebrated chocolate cake.... We tried the Chicago-style hot dogs and they are yummy. Will be back for Italian beef sandwich and burgers next time. So crowded so the staff run crazy to change trash bags and cleaned the tables....
My partner, originally is from Chicago, and I visited Portillo’s hoping to enjoy an authentic Italian beef sandwich and Chicago-style hotdog. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite meet our expectations. First, the parking situation was chaotic; many people ended up parking at Costco since the main lot was overcrowded. Be cautious about parking near the drive-thru, as you risk getting blocked by people trying to order. The lines stretched almost to the door, so be prepared for a bit of a wait. Although ordering was straightforward. This location is also quite a drive from central Houston about an hour to an hour and a half so keep that in mind if you’re coming from inside the loop. The biggest letdown was the Italian beef sandwich, which lacked flavor, and even the juice seemed bland. It didn’t come with hot sauce or other accompaniments, which would have enhanced the experience. I don’t usually add extras like ketchup, so I was hoping for more in terms of seasoning and authenticity. On a positive note, the restaurant was very clean, and the staff were friendly and attentive. This might be due to the location being new, so I hope they maintain this level of service as time goes on. Overall, it was an okay experience but not quite worth the drive if you’re expecting a true taste of Chicago.
I’ve been to the original Portillo’s in Chicago, so when I heard one was opening in Houston, I was genuinely excited. As a big fan of hot dogs, I had high hopes that it would live up to the Chicago experience. Unfortunately, after a few visits, I have to say—it just doesn’t quite measure up. I’ve tried several items on the menu to give it a fair shot, including the cheeseburger, the Chicago-style hot dog, and the chili cheese dog. The cheeseburger, while char-grilled, was nothing memorable. It lacked the flavor or quality that would make me order it again. The Chicago-style hot dog is a classic and definitely the go-to for many. Personally, I’m not a fan of all the traditional toppings, but I respect the authenticity. Still, the sausage itself has an odd texture or bite that throws me off a bit. I do appreciate that it’s a different kind of hot dog than your standard variety. The chili cheese dog was the most disappointing. The hot dog was cold, so I had to take it home and reheat it. On top of that, it had way too many beans in the chili for my taste, which made it less enjoyable. On the plus side, the decor is fun and captures that classic Portillo’s charm—it feels like a lively, family-friendly environment. It’s usually packed, which shows that people are excited about it. The staff has always been respectful and helpful during my visits, which I appreciate. Overall, while I wanted to love this Houston location as much as the original, it just hasn’t hit the mark for me yet.
i had looked online and noticed that Portillo’s from Chicago had opened many locations in Houston so when i was in the Richmond i decided to stop by. it was my first time experiencing the restaurant so didn’t know what to expect. it’s more fast food than i expected as you order from a screen and then sit until your order is called. your order is packed to go and you can either take it to go or sit at the restaurant. the restaurant was huge with lots of seating but there was no staff cleaning tables or keeping up with the dining area. we ordered the cheeseburger, the kids chicken tenders, and the chopped salad. the kids tenders and the honey mustard sauce that came with it were good; the french fries were also good. the burger was decent with a good size and flavor but nothing spectacular. the chopped salad was a good portion size and had decent flavor. overall it was a good experience. would i go out of my way and is it something unique from chicago like deep dish pizza, no; but its decent food if you are in the area
I tried beef sandwich (not my kind of sandwich) cheeseburger and the hot dog. The hot dog is the best, but the bun helps make it better. The burger is ok, but there are 5 better burgers within a mile of there. The beef sandwich tastes like a cheese steak wanna be! The people were friendly and the place was interesting enough but the food taste is missing the mark.
I’ve heard how much this place is popular in Chicago so i decided to give it a try. Because it’s a new opening the lines were long but the orders moved fast. It did take a little bit to get the food but when it came it seemed like a multitude of orders were fulfilled at the same time. 1. Chicago dog: it was good for a dog. The sausage was decent. The pickle slice was generous and tomatoes large. If I wanted a dog I’d come here. 2. The beef sandwich was generous in portion. I ordered it with a side of dip. Because the cup size was small it was impossible to dip so you have to spoon the sauce onto the sandwich. It was a little messy. The sauce added more flavor to the beef which was needed. If I was to order this again I would order the wet version. Overall it was okay but it doesn’t beat a Philly beef sandwich dip. 3. The hot pickles weren’t hot. While they were needed on the beef sandwich it would have been nice if they were added to the sandwich instead of as a side. In fact I saw a couple bring their own jar of pickles. Overall I think Portillo brings something new to the neighborhood for fast food and it will do well here.
Don't use the app, it's no quicker, I've currently been waiting 15 minutes since I placed the order for one sandwich and a fry from Costco when I left. Right now they aren't even making a sandwich, just looking at screens. I love Portillo's but this is the last time I'm eating here. I can get hotdogs and Italian beef sandwiches at lots of places.
This is the second visit to this location and we are very disappointed. The first visit, all of our order was wrong. 1st combination was missing everything except the meat and bread. 2nd combination was missing the Italian sausage. 3rd the fries were drowned in salt. Visit 2 today and fries swimming in salt, one combination had just one strip of Italian Beef meat. *** Thia explains why they have no customers. Anyone that is trying Portillos for the first time and doesn't know what it should be, will take one look at this food and say " not worth the money, I'm not coming back" We are from Chicago, we know what it should be. Don't tell me that you (behind the counter) are making them right. *****check your food before you leave, make sure you get what you paid for.
First of all there were seven employees in the nearly empty restaurant. Nobody was at the counter. There were two self serve kiosks but I REFUSE to use them. Our order was stamped at 3:50. Our food was finally ready at 4:09. They set our bag on the counter and made my wife's shake further delaying us. When my wife opened her chicken sandwich she found the cheese and bacon on top of a hamburger. The manager remade her order. Although she refunded the $32 we spent i was totally disappointed. My hot dogs and fries were tepid at best and the buns soggy. We have been to other Portillo's locations and enjoyed our meals. This location needs work. Overall we were 100% unhappy with the experience.
