Opinions de Char Steak & Lounge Rochester
We came for their special Valentine’s Day dinner and were impressed! It was a great experience with great food, and a good atmosphere. It can get loud when it’s busy but you should still be able to hear each other when talking.
Even through construction we had an absolutely stellar evening. Beautiful snow storm conditions, we rented a room for two nights, Amir and company were super inviting at Hatties. Great staycation so far!
Hands down best service, food, and atmosphere! My husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary tonight, and the staff went above and beyond to make sure we felt special. Our waitress, Shelly was top notch and made the night flawless. Thank you again, we will be back!!!
Thanksgiving dinner today was very tasty, served family-style with very generous proportions, and most importantly for us the manger and staff took extremely good care of one member of our party who is celiac. Thank you to the wonderful team staffing the holiday.
This restaurant was in a hotel lounge but did not distract from the quality of food and service. The bar area is really nice with plenty of seating. Depending on when you're there, there is a large lot to park in and easy access to the restaurant and lounge. Service was really good. My only slight complaint was a wobbly table which is pretty minor. I had the strip steak and it was cooked perfectly with great flavor.
On point is the best summary I can give you. Nearly telepathic service and delicious food. I sat at the bar and Mary was my bartender / server. Everything was right. Lots of subtle little hospitality bits to make the experience terrific.
A last minute decision to eat here at 9pm. It is a very fun atmosphere inside a nice hotel. Char provides a sophisticated menu with great options. I decided to have a couple of small plate options while my friend enjoyed her filet mignon. It had the perfect char on the outside with a warm rare center, just like she ordered. My small plate of eggplant parm was large enough to have leftovers to bring home. Overall the staff were very friendly and we could see servers being attentive to their tables. Unfortunately our waitress was slow to come to our table, take our orders, and never checked in to see if we needed anything. Hopefully she was just having an off night. The other servers did ask us if we were being taken care of which was nice. I highly recommend checking out the rooftop bar and view of the hotel before you leave. The bar had a cool vibe and the view was beautiful. We were surrounded by very friendly guests around a huge fire pit on the rooftop. If you’re looking for something different to experience in downtown Rochester, this is the place to come.
Nothing to Complain About Here... Excellent Service was given by a waiter who knew drinks and entrée, Meal was Very Good and Ample amount 😀.... This restaurant is perfect if you're staying at the hotel...!!!!!! I visit Rochester every so often, and finally have found the hotel and restaurant that I can call home 🏡...
Last night my partner and I celebrated our one year anniversary at Char and our waiter Amir made it an amazing experience! He was very patient about giving us time to decide and was helpful with selecting the very best wine for my tastes and the occasion! The food was phenomenal!!! Steak perfectly cooked and seasoned!! Amir also hearing that we were celebrating gave us 2 free desserts! The Strawberry cheesecake was better than any other place I have had. I plan on going back for all our events! Thank you Amir for making the night very special!
This was one of the best steakhouse experiences I’ve had in a long time! We went for our wedding dinner and it was great. They were very nice, super helpful, and treated us amazing. They even brought out extra stuff for us which was so nice and they didn’t have to! Our waitress Gleyce and her assistant waitress were super great to us and so professional and kind! We didn’t get any appetizers but we both got the NY Strip, mine was medium rare + and my wife’s was rare. They came out amazing and not a lot of places know about MR+ so I was pleasantly surprised! My wife got the Bernaise sauce with her steak, she didn’t really like it and neither did I, but the house steak sauce was amazing so we recommend that, however I didn’t use it since the steaks already were so juicy and tender and flavorful! We also got the mac n cheese, Brussels sprouts, and truffle fries and they were all so delicious! For desert I asked if they had cheesecake and she said no, so I got ice cream and my wife got the crème brûlée. When they brought it out she also brought cheesecake which was so nice because she was able to get some for me that they had free of charge. It was all delicious. They also had a coat check which was nice. Overall this was an amazing experience and I hope they all get the recognition they deserve. I would love to come again!
Phenomenal restaurant! My partner and I enjoyed our dinner, and the desserts were fantastic (highly recommend the lemon cake). But what I really can’t over-emphasize is how amazing the service was. We were helped by several people, and they were all just so incredibly warm, kind, and thoughtful. So attentive and it was obvious to us that they really cared. We went back for breakfast the next day, and I had one of the most amazing waffle dishes of my life (and again, the service was spectacular!).
This steakhouse restaurant in the strathallan hotel easily deserves five stars in the food quality. We room service ordered us a cowboy ribeye for 2 which was excellent. And some purée potatoes, which were super. They charred corn was out so we substituted for the spinach dip, which was heavy with dill and cream..so I liked it, but my wife didn’t. The max n cheese was also too fancy for our 2 year old, but I tried it myself and she has terrible taste in food since it was much better than her favorite Kraft microwave junk.
The food was absolutely excellent. Someone in the kitchen knows how to cook salmon perfectly. Joe the bartender is exactly the type of bartender you would hope for, when you're traveling alone for business- the most hospitable I've ever met. And not to mention the drink creations, are fantastic.
Once we got seated away from the kitchen, the dining experience was predictably excellent. Although the hostess wasn't very welcoming or considerate, the waiter was charming and personable. The assistant was attentive and good humored. The food never disappoints. I did have a strip steak medium that needed no additional sauce. Swiss chard and mashed potatoes rounded out a very filling meal. Don't try to come without reservations!
My husband and I used to be frequent patrons of Char. For his birthday I reserved a table for 6 in advance. When we got there we were told they were behind and asked if we wanted to grab a drink at the bar. We did, but we were told multiple times to move out of the way. We would have loved to, but our table reservation became 45 minutes late. We were ready to forgive that (even though we had plans to meet more people upstairs at a certain time) however, our server had an attitude. After 45 minutes of waiting we had to ask to put in our order and we received an eye roll. Then, when we realized the rest of the people attending my husband birthday had been waiting a while upstairs at Hattie’s, we asked for the check (with no sort of tone), and again were met with an eye roll. I understand they were busy and we were going to give benefit of the doubt, but the service got worse and worse. In the future, if you make a reservation wait near an hour, I would recommend an apology and quick service rather than attitude and lackluster delivery. (My husband ate his lamb with a butter knife). The food was great, and as a former patron we will give it another try, but let’s hope they work out the kinks.
I ordered a NY strip rare, it came almost medium. They offered to make another one, but I told them it would have to be fine because we had waited almost an hour for our dinner to arrive and I didn't want to wait even longer. Although it was overcooked to my liking it had good flavor. The mashed potatoes looked plain and boring, but were surprisingly delicious. Someone ordered the chicken and took one bite and was very disappointed. VERY SALTY. The parmasean fries and sautéed mushrooms were very good, so was the bread. They also brought out complementary desserts because it was someone's birthday. Crab cake and scallops were very good. Lobster Mac and cheese had two pieces of lobster in it and was mainly breadcrumbs.
Char has been on my list for some time now and I've finally made my way to making a reservation here for my birthday. Making a reservation for 8:30pm, we arrived a couple minutes late. There was a note on the reservation for a booth which I confirmed in the beginning of the day. After arriving, we were told there'd be a few minutes wait as one of the booths are just now signing their check. We weren't sat until 10 minutes have passed. Usually not a good sign as I made this reservation days in advanced and my request wasn't fulfilled which luckily by chance a booth was leaving. Starting with a few starters, we opted in for the octopus special. The octopus itself was tender and delicious. The accompanying squash was okay, a few cubes were undercooked. The gnocchi were also great, no complaints there. The truffle fries were a bit of a letdown. I thought the truffles were rather bitter which took away from the entire appetizer. We also opted in for the potato puree which sounds scrumptious but in reality, just an average under seasoned bowl of mashed potatoes. For mains, I opted in for the NY strip with a side of the cold-water Canadian lobster tail, and a few scallops. The NY strip was cooked to the perfect requested temp medium, and the lobster and scallops were cooked perfectly. Only thing I found odd was the amount of drawn butter that came alongside the lobster tail. This was easily 3x over the amount necessary and I'm one who's not shy for butter. For the lady, she opted in for the filet mignon, lobster tail and also a few scallops. As mentioned before, no complaints on the scallops or lobster tail. The filet was rather undercooked. Requested medium and this was closer to rare. A bit of a letdown but nevertheless, it was edible. As for our server Alison, I thought she was professional and made our meal enjoyable and I loved our small talk. 10/10 for her. This wasn't a cheap meal as it rang in above $400 before the tip. This is without dessert and just a single bottle of bottled spring water. I expected the bare minimum a steak being cooked at its proper requested temperature considering this restaurant is known for their steak. On the fence whether I would return but leaning towards looking at other options first.
Service was fantastic, crab croquet were delicious. however we were quite disappointed with the size of our salad that they split up for us (literally 5 bites each). Husband ordered a Double Whiskey neat, well they looked more like singles. Steaks were delicious but my bone in ribeye.... the top was perfectly charree but the bottom side had the lightest char on it, and didnt seem like it had rested enough and was kinda tough for a $70 steak. My husband and I are pretty particular about our steaks and just thought for how much we spent there it should have been top notch.
Wait until renovations are complete!! Our last visit to Char was so underwhelming. 😩 Limited selections is a REACH— there’s about 5 options total on the menu for entrees, service was exhaustingly slow (no fault of the servers, they’re clearly traveling down to the restaurant and back multiple times), and it was freezing most of the night for whatever reason. If I had never been before, I would not return but since I have, I know the current construction is to blame. Maybe next time will be a better experience. 🤷🏾♀️ Drinks were perfect 👌🏾
Was there on Monday. Server said , “chefs getting crazy back there. we have waffle fries instead of regular tonight!” I figured, they’d be hand cut waffle fries. But no, Frozen from a bag waffle fries?!?! Cmon….act like you know what you’re doing in that kitchen. Get a potato, cut it, blanch it, fry it. VERY SIMPLE
