The best tacos I've ever had! I love the service, they are polite and friendly. The decor is nice. Great place to come cool off drink some beers and and eat some good food.
Great food with a family setting or dinner for two. The service is friendly and welcoming when you enter the door. Homemade chips and salsa as starters and hot homade flour tortillas with every meal.
Great food, big portions, service and prices. The beans dip with cheese are delicious and the guacamole is made with real avocados. Definitely will go back
Love the food. Service is great. It is an older restaurant but I dont mind. Me and my family have been going here for over 20 yrs
Not a place to go to if you're on a diet... I had the Xochimilco salad, with no cheese, no guac and no dressing. I used the salsa for dressing and the waitress put the tasty guac on the side so I was able to enjoy a couple of bites. The chips were ever so tasty, and crispy. They needed a little salt, but there were salt shakers were aplenty. My companions had wonderful looking meals, but the homemade tortillas caught my attention... I can't wait to try one when I'm off my diet!
Great food and perfect tortillas. Also if you have a peanut or treenut allergy it is completely safe to eat there. Some of our family favorites are houvos rancheros, enchiladas, guacamole tostada
Mr. Frank is Top Notch ! He took care of my Baby for her graduation!
Just when Cali closes, Xochimilco is still there for outside dining. Honestly had a great time. Food and service was awesome. Small world kind of friends were there plus new found friends i will visit again for sure.
The food is amazing thank. The service is wonderful. The ambience is just okay. It’s our favorite Mexican food restaurant
Down home kind of place. Large portions, delicious foods, the "get to know you " kind of serious, reasonable prices. For Mexican food, we don't go anywhere else.
Been coming here for years reminds me of home cooking, Like the way my mom used to cook for me when I was a kid. Great place to have dinner in what's your favorite sports game also big screens Excellent large Marguerite is. Very attentive waitresses happy when I walk out with my Box of leftovers.
I hadn't been here in awhile, but I'm going to become a regular. The food was so flavorful, and the service was attentive without being intrusive. Very comfortable place for four of us to have a good meal and visit.
After a workshop at the Crowne, we headed over for a bite. The portions were great! I had the Chile Colorado and it was super tasty. Would definitely recommend and go there again! It would be worth the drive!
Amazing and ACTUALLY authentic Mexican restaurant like one might find closer to the south. The only thing that could have made it better would have been a bigger parking lot. Go and bring your appetite, and your friends appetite!
Omg. That menudo and tortillas.... last Sunday was great and this sunday.... every Sunday for sure... and homemade tortillas.i remember chevys trying to do fresh tortillas and how terrible they were... 🤣🤣🤣. Glad I found this place. Ate a tamale carnitas burrito and a Chile relleno. Also, so far everything was actually excellent. My friend had an enchilada, she liked it and is pretty picky. Salsa, especially the hot salsa hit the spot. Maybe I've just been lucky 4X in a row. Definitely ill be going back!
We went through Xochimilco for a going away event we had for a coworker back in February and everything was amazing, so when it was time to plan for another one we already knew this restaurant was a must to go through again. Frank always does such a great job with communicating and providing wonderful service and the food is always delicious! They were even able to accommodate our needs on short notice which was a total life saver! If you’re looking for a great catering service to go off without a hitch with amazing authentic mexican food, or even to just go out to eat at, this is definitely the restaurant you’re looking for!
Norma and Frank hosted a celebration of life for my parents last night. They were well prepared and so friendly! Lots of tears were shed, of course, but the atmosphere and food were perfect.
I can't stay away from this place. Just turning 21, I had my birthday here and the selection of beer was nice. Everybody here works at 100% and I love it. In fact I try to tell them how good they are at service. They honestly should have more customers than I think they get. They have wonderful potential. I personally think they should look for live music at some point. Maybe even extend hours on the weekend until midnight/1AM and have events.
My wife and I had an event catered on Friday August 3rd for about 70 people. Mike came and setup before the event and everything was perfect. The food was absolutely delicious and we got complimented by everyone on how good it was. Everything was fresh and tasted great. I cannot say enough great things about Mike and the food he was there ahead of schedule and helped so very much with the process. Thank you again for all your help.
Xochimilco is by far one of the best places I have catered from. They did catering for my daughter's quinceanera (15th birthday) for about 275 people, which turned out to be a major success due to the quality of food, the taste of food, the customer service provided by owner's Frank and Norma. From the beginning of the contract, Frank constantly kept in touch with me to ensure everything went according to plan and was super responsive to my phone calls and text messages. Frank and Norma went above and beyond the expectations my family and I had for catering and they definitely set the bar high for catering service. My guests and I are still raving about the delicious food, exceptional service and their FRIENDLINESS. We ordered chicken enchiladas, rice, beans, chips and salsa and salad. All the food tasted really good and it was all FRESH!! They have definitely earned my business for future events and I have been recommending to all friends, family and business partners. Thank you Xochimilco!!
Nora was amazing and the food was excellent. We are from Texas and got stranded here because our truck broke down. Norms made us feel welcome and was very friendly. Did was hot and quickly served. I've recommended eating here.
Wonderful little mexican restaurant. Atmosphere is always nice and the food is delicious.
I have been eating here for years with my Family. This is absolutely the best place to eat in this area. I highly recommend eating here, they have AMAZING fresh food daily. It's all so delicious!! You will be so happy you ate here and I promise you will be back for more. Everyone that works here is so Awesome and nice!
We had them come and cater a Christmas party at our house last weekend. Everything was amazing. Frank the owner was very helpful figuring everything out. We had the taco salad and salsa bar, we had 50 people at our party and almost everyone of them asked me where we got the food from because they all loved it. We're already thinking about having a christmas party again next year and if we do we are definitely going to give them a call.
OMG by far THE BEST Mexican restaurant I have ever ordered from! First off let me say I did not dine in, I walked in to order for to go. That being said, I didn't expect anything other than a chair along the wall to wait like most places. But they were just great from the first moment, they gave me a menu and seated me at a small table to review the menu, order and wait for my food, they offered me a drink and even brought chips and salsa to my table for me to have while I waited. During my wait they checked on me to ensure there was nothing else I needed. It was all very courteous, considerate and genuine customer appreciation. I got my food after probably about 15 min and headed home. Now usually I do not like enchiladas, I find the sauce overpowering, the tortillas dry and just overall not the best. THIS PLACE HAS MADE ME COMPLETELY RETHINK MY DISLIKE FOR ENCHILADAS! I decided to go out on a limb and ordered a pollo taco and enchilada combo and wow! This enchilada.... It was just so good. The thing that stood out most was the sauce, it wasn't an overseasoned tomato paste distraction to the actual food( my opinion of most mole sauces) , it was SO GOOD! It was light and the perfect combination of sweet/savory/salty from what I can assume is the result of NOT USING tubes of tomato paste as the base, and perfectly complimented the delicious food which I believe included house made tortillas(which are always the best). I could go on and on. I can't wait until the next time I order. JUST. SO. GOOD!
I've been enjoying Xochimilco for almost 10 years now. Keep coming back due to the friendly staff and owners. The food is tasty, but the tortillas and tamales are my favorite. Grab a drink and meal here to satisfy your Mexican food cravings.
Just had burrito/taco/salad bar for 25 delivered and everyone gave it 5 stars! Frank has catered several events for me over the past few years - solid 5 stars each and every time. The food is amazing (very generous servings!), reasonably priced, and Frank’s service is always friendly and professional. Homemade everything - chips, tortillas, guacamole- the carnitas are perfect! The shrimp cocktail is worth a special trip to Xochimilco! Local businesses need your support now more than ever - you can’t go wrong supporting this one!
This restaurant had been my favorite good Mexican good in the Sacramento area since I was a little girl. They've had at least 3 different locations and I've followed them everywhere. Friend friendly employees, good service that's not invasive, and their food is awesome. Never a bad choice from their menu.
The Client Ritchie band was playing out on the patio, there were heaters that kept us warm. The food was very good, just what I was wanting and I was not disappointed. The dining room was open as well. The prices were competitive.
Like someone else shared, I've driven by here for years and always wanted to try it. I finally made it and now I'm kicking myself for not trying years ago. OMG! So good, everything was fantastic. I got the Xochimilco Special; Beef taco, beef enchilada, chili relleno, steak ranchero, homemade tortillas, chips, salsa, rice, beans...I ate it all, I couldn't stop, I can barely move now but it was so delicious. I will be back, alot. I highly recommend this place. Don't wait years like I did.
Stopped here after work for cocktails. This was our first visit. Very impressed with the Cadillac Margaritas and the Top Shelf Margaritas. Both a must try along with the chips and salsa. Mexican beers on tap and TV'S for watching soccer. Prices are reasonable and the service is fast and friendly.
I can remember this restaurant at its location since I was a kid, growing up in the Citrus Heights area. I had never visited the establishment till recently. I must say, it immediately became my go-to for Mexican food. Certainly not for the "light" eater, as the plates are so full they spill off the sides. Perfect for a big eating foodie such as myself. Chips and salsa are immediately served upon seating and there is an additional salsa bar with lots of options for that extra kick of heat or, just enjoying some variety. Dinner is served hot and is always accompanied with a container of fresh homemade flour tortillas to sop up the sauce on your plate or stuff with whatever odds and ends you're enjoying. When friends visit from out of town, I like to impress them with an over filling and mouthwatering meal at Xochmilco. I cannot say enough about this place. Believe e when I say, you won't be let down.
Xochimilco catered my 50th birthday party for about 70 people. The team was on time, professional, and very friendly. They cooked some of the food on site and it all tasted amazing. We had chicken and beef, cheese enchiladas, beans, rice, and their nacho bar. I'm Mexican and my Mexican family raved about it.
This is our favorite restaurant for Mexican food. Fresh handmade tortillas and best red sauce I have ever eaten. We tried the nachos for the first time and it was HUGE. We shared it and we never do that. Our server is great and always friendly and consistent. Salsa bar always full. If you haven't been there you should try it. Xochimilco also has a bar.
Bean & Cheese dip was very good! Mix drinks were pretty good, too! We had to sit outside, sometimes we couldn't hear one another! Service was great! I'll return real soon!
They make homemade tortillas!! The steak ranchero tastes like home because the food is very authentic. However, do not go here expecting the walls of a fancy place. This is a bar after all. So go for a margarita and great food and you won't be disappointed.
The food was wonderful! DH and I each had the 3 item your choice combo. Between us we had beef tacos, beef quesadillas, beef enchiladas with rice, beans and tortillas. Plenty of chips and salsa too. Super good. So good to find the Leyva family recipes kept alive and well in Sacramento. Nice atmosphere and great service, friendly and warm. We will be returning often despite the distance from home. ❤️
Fantastic and attentive service. Great food. I ordered the Shrimp Fajitas and it was full of flavor with fantastic flower tortillas. The food isn't very photogenic. I hear it all the time we eat with our eyes, and the flavor overpowered my preconceived notion.
Just damn good home cookin! Been going here since previous location, and it’s just damn good food. Chips and salsa are wonderful and I absolutely love the occasional flour tortilla chip in the mix because that’s what authentic spots do! Oh, and get ready to tear into the fresh flour tortillas with your beans and rice, it’s just fire. My personal favorite is the enchiladas, has the thick gravy ish homemade type sauce not the translucent canned pepper sauce the major chain restaurants use. If you’re an iced tea lover like me, I’ll personally testify I’ve never had moldy tea, aficionados know the taste I’m talking about.
I have been driving by this place for 25 years and went in for the first time today. Super fuego. Was nice to get great service, food and a drink for a reasonable price. Like old school prices super chill. 5 out 5 si se puawdes
We had Xochimilco cater our community event at the State Capitol for 500 and it went great! Everyone raved about how great the burritos were. Frank and his team were amazingly helpful with delivery and pickup. Definitely recommend them!
Everything tastes fresh and homemade. The tortillas are amazing, and the salsa has just a hint of heat. I had the chicken flautas and the chicken had that true roasted flavor. Huge portions and excellent service, all for great prices.
We had Xochimilco cater an event at our home where we had 65+ people. They were on time, showed up with there own equipment and the food was delicious. The cost was very reasonable. I would highly rate Frank and his crew for your next event.
Family owned, family recipies, not corporate garbage. Always good and ample quantities. If you are local and eat at and miss Luis' you will love this place.
Excellent food, great salsa, Fresh Tortillas come with every combo, which is different from lots of places. Highly recommend.
This is a hidden gem in Sacramento. Wonderful people, great atmosphere and fantastic food. If you're in the area, don't miss it. They also have live music Wednesday nights from 6:30-8:30. LOVE this place!
This is my favorite Mexican restaurant. I eat there at least once a month. I always order the number 1.
Love their food. Generous portions, we take home leftovers to enjoy another day. The margaritas are generous. The employees and owners are all lovely & we always enjoy our time there. I think on Wednesday nights at 6:00, they have local musicians & singers. One night we heard l fun group that featured the music of Cole Porter. Check the website or call for details on the music. We just like going there & enjoy their food.
Tasty taco plate with beans, rice, lettuce, tomato, fresh tortillas for a great price. Chips n salsa were fine. It was a bit chilly inside, but otherwise a comfortable, relaxed place. The staff was wonderful! Quick, helpful and nice.
The atmosphere is very nice and warm. The server did great with ordering plates. It was able to combine shrimps and beef in fajita plate. The meal is served hot and delicious. Recommend all dishes and try either corn or flour tortillas.
We have the best time at the Clint Ritchie Band and Friends. The staff handled this crowd most efficiently and professionally. The portions were generous as well as delicious. Update 2023. Just a ditto from our 2022 post. A really great restaurant and a truly entertaining Christmas show.
Pleasantly surprised! Gave it a try. Good food, fair priced beverages and especially thanks hospitality is nice!
Very good food. So much flavor and the people are friendly and attentive. I asked for a dish that was not on the menu just to see if they had it and that I had missed it on the menu...no problem...it was made and I was able to have Camorones a la Diabla.
Great customer service. Food was great. Prices and portions were great. Would come back again. And they have fresh homemade tortillas. Delicious
My experience was good. Judging by the people dining here, Xochimilco is a favorite for their regulars. I got a super burrito, it was listed under the section that said everything comes with rice, beans, melted cheese and garnish. I was surprised when the burrito was not accompanied with those sides. I asked if it was supposed to have them and my waitress said they come inside the burrito. It was acceptable, but in hindsight I would have gotten tacos with rice, beans, and cheese on the side. They also have a Taco Tuesday special that offers street tacos for $2.75 each or close to that price.
Food was delicious. Best chimichanga ever!! Comes with carnitas and green sauce, which are my faves!! Have half orders too! Still ended up taking half home! Chips and salsa were good, rice and beans were good, but the homemade tortillas were outstanding!! My hubby likes their bbq oysters too. Will be back.
This place is probably one of my favorite restaurants to get some tasty authentic Mexican food. Usually the waiters are nice and the drinks are FANTASTIC. I haven't ordered a bunch of different things here, but everything I have ordered has turned out delicious.
The food is awesome. The people that go there are very friendly. They have Live music on Wednesday nights.
I've driven past this place a thousand times and have always said I'm going to stop there and try it. Well, I finally did. It has a fairly decent variety. I tried the Taco Tuesday special $2.50 per taco. They are significantly larger than the general street taco variety and better than your usual restaurant tacos. The drinks weren't bad either. I definitely will be going back!!
Taco Tuesday is wonderful and I've never been disappointed by anything else I've had there. It's near my job so I'm in every few weeks. If you ask for the "good" chips they bring out fresh flour tortillas chips that are my personal favorite, and go well with their queso dip. They also have a salsa bar and yummy drink menu.
Had the beef chimichanga and it comes with rice and beans. You get chips w/salsa, sour cream and guacamole and tortillas. Plenty for me. One of the better mexican food restaurants I have eaten from. We got delivery, I can just imagine if I was able to eat there and the food was piping hot. Very favorable and will definitely be going back! Totally recommend!
Really excellent Tamales And the Mexican "Gravy" is amazing.
One of those places you've driven past a thousand times and finally went in. We were the only customers on a Saturday afternoon. Too bad, the food was really good. Fresh salsa, chips, and tortillas. Being an older building, the prices were reasonable. Try it, you'll like it.
.Food was amazing. Service was slow but the ladies were very friendly. Watch your bill closely though. We were overcharged quite a bit.
The food was delicious and tasted authentic… coming from a born and raised Mexican, this food was pretty good. They have tvs to watch games. The flour tortillas are home made which I love!
Chicken enchiladas are good, but swimming in sauce. Shrimp fajitas are ok. The steak in the enchiladas isn't shredded, so it's just large chunks of beef. Personally, I would prefer shredded beef in an enchilada. Refried beans are good. Rice is ok.
Xochimilco is a longstanding Sacramento Mexican restaurant that just hits the spot sometimes! The service is very attentive, the food is flavorful, and dishes have large portions. I ordered something that wasn’t on the menu— a quesadilla with steak ranchero inside— and not only did they not blink an eye about accommodating me, it was absolutely delicious!!! There was plenty to take home later, even! I love that they have homemade tortillas, too. The restaurant itself might not be much to look at, but the flavor and value of an excellent meal experience is worth the trip!
The Food was amazing. Now the drinks I was disappointed in. I haven't been here in about 6 months or more but the drinks ( alcohol ) are not the same. If you have been a customer here for years, then you understand. I will be back for the food, definitely pre gaming at home.
1st visit! Even though they had a couple large groups going, our food came out quickly and tasted great. It's a bit hard to access the tight parking lot but worth it.
It's ok. A little dark. Maybe it was the time of day and the section was closed? Service was good. Homemade flour Tortillas are awesome! Weird they sell them so pricey, guess I need to learn to make them. Food was ok, read reviews thought I'll eat something I can be safe with. Had the chicken tostada and enchilada. Sauce was kind of gross not what I think is authentic, not much spice to it. Tostada was impossible to eat, very heavy and again not much flavor. Husband had carnitas said they where ok.
Placed a to-go order of the lunch chile relleno. Food was okay, I've had better tasting Mexican food from a hole in the wall place. The chile was a good size but the batter was not appetizing. The beans and rice tasted okay not the best. I probably won't come back.
excellent fajitas and dang good margaritas too. i really wanted to give a higher rating because we loved this place for years but lately our experience has been hit and miss. staff is always friendly. this place is wheelchair/ scooter/ walker friendly.
Edit. Ordered the same thing tonight. No sour cream No guacamole. At least they were still cooked ok. Dry AF though . No repeat Beef flautas. Perfect. Not burned. Crispy perfection and guacamole , sour cream , beans and rice and salsa on the side just how I asked. My Dasher read the knock lightly note. Rare bonus money well spent!!!
I never leave reviews, however my experience here was horrible. I’m giving 2 stars because the servers were very pleasant and attentive. This place lacks flavor/seasoning, everything was bland. The salsa tasted like blended up tomatoes with no kick or flavor, just red tomato flavor. Google “How to spot a fake Mexican restaurant.” The taquitos w/ rice and beans had no flavor, the taquitos were decent after drenching them in sour cream. The soup lacked flavor. I used plenty of salt and pepper to help it out. I paid $22 for food I barely ate, waste of money ugh!
I feel bad because the server was super nice, but I have to be honest. The food lacks flavor and the beans taste canned. The tortillas seemed fresh made but were dry and lacked salt. The plating could use better presentation as well. The pork in my chimi was cooked well enough that if it actually had any verde sauce would have still made the meal decent. Overall was not a good first experience to want to return again.
The overall flavour was rather bland, and the salsa served with the complimentary crisps tasted like slightly spicy water. The onions in the burrito were large and half-raw, not cooked through, showing little consideration for the diner. The tortilla also had uneven cooking. While the portions were very large, paying over $40 for two dishes and one drink was not the price one would expect for Mexican food. A positive point was that the restaurant's music was quiet and not intrusive.
My dish was decent enough although on the salty side, but my mother's pork tamale had rotten meat in it. I am relieved that we didn't get sick from trying it, although that may be because we immediately spit it out because the taste was so awful. They gave her a replacement dish but just the fact that they served rotten meat is not impressive. Additionally we were one of the few customers in the restaurant and it took a very long time for the food to be made. We will not be returning.
I’m not sure why this restaurant has such great ratings. I went here to show my husband some authentic mexican food. It was far from authentic. The chicken tacos I ordered came in a hard shell, and the shell appeared to be deep fried.. I was expecting small round corn tortillas with grilled chicken/cilantro/onion/salsa. The tortas there are also tasteless, not sure what type of bread they used, just overwhelmingly dry. My husband ordered a steak and cheese quesadilla which consisted of ONE large round flour tortilla sitting on top of the meat and cheese, which was cut pizza style. The horchata was overwhelmingly sweet, but my husband did enjoy it. The customer service was not terrible but it was not great either. The atmosphere needs a bit of a facelift for sure. The tables/chairs need updating, possibly some new light fixtures as well. Overall, bland and non-authentic mexican food based on what I ordered, which was disappointing as a Mexican woman who just moved to the area looking for a new favorite spot to eat.
Came in for a drink. Was going to order lunch, the lady in FRONT of us, on the other side of the counter, didn't even look up at us. She was rolling napkins over silverware, prepping them. She wasn't very busy. We said hi, she didn't even look up. Then we decided to go somewhere else for lunch, paid at the register & waved goodbye to her & the other lady behind the bar. Again, she didn't even look up.....Needless to say.....won't be back.
Food was good, however, I found 2 very sharp pieces of chicken bone in my chicken taco. And I'm not kidding when i say sharp. Had I swallowed either one I would have been in SERIOUS trouble. I really don't think I'll go there again. Dangerous.
All five star reviews are ridiculous. The place is totally mediocre. Not the worst I ever had but pretty bad. The meat taco thing I had was allright but the chili filled with cheese and fried in some kind of dough tasted like it was frozen before. Beans and rice where allright at the most. I would not go there again nor recommend it. The place doesn't look good either. Dim lights. Uncomfortable setting. Waitress was allright. Not alot of people there either. Should have walked out when I walked in and got a first impression. The mint that came with the check was the best part of the whole meal.
My friend told them that she did not want any cheese on her food because she's very allergic to cheese, they brought her meal with a lot of cheese. When she confronted them with that she was allergic, they took her plate back and all they did was scrape the cheese off of the food and left her with a spoonful of cheese. The place is very dated and from the outside it looks like it's closed. The food was okay but everything else was not. The waiter couldn't tell us anything about the food. I guess people just go there for the margaritas.
This place is garbage! The only reason for 1 star is because the margaritas were good. The food is bland, salsa is terrible, everything tastes like cardboard, the tortillas have the consistency of playdough -were dense, raw and undercooked, chips were drenched in grease, service was terrible. Definitely not "authentic" and do not recommend. We would have done better at Chipotle
Went here thinking that this would be a good place to get some Mexican food, but it was the worst place for that. Should have gone to Del Taco. The salsa was bland, no flavor. It was like they just blended a bunch of tomatoes and called it salsa. I order a pork burrito and it was so dry, and I couldn't even use there salsa to moisten it. The only good thing that I ate was the refried beans and rice. I don't know how this place is at 4.1 stars, maybe they have good margaritas.
When we first walked in there were bathrooms right at the door and a strong urine odor. The food tasted frozen and not fresh. The tamales 🫔 are terrible 😫. The service was nice but the food was NO BUENO.
I had a steak torta and my daughter had a chimichanga. The food was awful! The steak on the torta was chewy and tough, it had zero flavor and I had to spit it out because I couldn't chew any longer! The chimichanga was subpar at best the, it was just a greasy flavorless meat filled tortilla! The best part of my meal was the fries and they tasted as if they were fried in old grease! Not sure how this place has stayed open for so long!! We will not be returning ever!
Ordered from here for the first and last time last night. VERY disappointed. I ordered the chicken taco, chicken enchilada w/ frijoles and rice. Very bland, no flavor at all, the chips even seemed old. I actually threw away the meal after a blew bites I just couldn't. A waste of 21.00 (had delivered). Wish I could get refunded. I should have gone to El Pollo Loco which I absolutely love their chicken avocado tacos.
I'm not one to complain about food...but I have to say this was the most disgusting Mexican food I have ever had. The meat was tasteless. Chicken tacos were dry like the meat been sitting out and then fried again. Taco Bell Mexican rice is way better then here. You would think they got the point by us not eating any of the food and would ask if everything was ok. But no, nothing was said. The waitress was nice no complaints there but the food was nothing short of terrible! Me and my wife are Mexican so believe we know decent Mexican food. Would definitely not recommend it to my worst enemy that how bad the food is. But the salsa was decent when added salt. Oh and the horchata was good also lol
Disappointing Experience, But the Beer Was Nice and Cold I recently dined at Xochimilco, eager to enjoy some authentic Mexican cuisine, but unfortunately, my experience fell flat. I finally decided on a combination plate of the chile relleno and tamale, as the menu offered very little in the way of creativity or enticing options. The food was surprisingly bland, lacking the vibrant flavors one would expect from a Mexican restaurant. I was especially disappointed with the salsa, which had a Taquera style—a tomato base—rather than the smoky fire-roasted flavors one tends to identify with Mexico City. It tasted as if someone had lost their molcajete and, in a rush, threw tomatoes and other ingredients into a blender, leaving it without rich and complex flavors that only the depth can be found through fire-roasted ingredients. While the chips were thin and nicely salted, they were surprisingly heavy, almost as if they were coated in grease, which made them less enjoyable as a starter. Everything was served "wet," with the red sauce slathered on everything, but it did little to enhance the flavors. The pork tamale was actually tasty. It didn’t have an overwhelming amount of heavy masa harina. The texture was a little soft and fell apart easily, but that could have been due to being submerged under all the "wet." On the other hand, the chile relleno was spicy, which I appreciated, but too “eggy” I wasn’t fond of the egg omelette it was wrapped in. It's a matter of personal preference; if I wanted an omelette, I would have ordered breakfast. The overall atmosphere had a slightly musty smell and felt dated, resembling an old-school cafeteria rather than a vibrant dining space one might expect from a Mexican restaurant. This lack of a lively atmosphere further contributed to the overall disappointment. On a positive note, the staff were attentive and friendly, making an effort to ensure I was taken care of throughout my meal. Seeing that I didn’t enjoy the meal, our lovely server (I did not catch his name) kindly offered an alternative, which I declined, but I so appreciated the gesture! It also appears they have a full-service bar with plenty of solid tequila choices, which is a nice touch for those looking to enjoy a drink. Plus, there was plenty of parking available, making it convenient to visit. Overall, while the service was commendable and the beer was nice and cold, the lack of flavor, the uninviting ambiance, and the uninspired menu made for a disappointing visit. I hope they can improve the quality of their food and ambiance, as I would love to see Xochimilco reach its full potential.
For the prices they charge, the food was suboptimal. I ordered a Carnitas plate. I saw ads outside for "Homemade Tortillas;" yet the tortillas that came with my plate were not fresh. The rice and the meat was very dry. There were 2 TVs playing in the main area; one had the volume on playing politics and the other had the Olympics. If I HAD to hear the volume, I'd rather hear the Olympics. Service wasn't that great; the lady didn't even offer to refill my water until after I was already done eating. I won't be back.
Good was terrible. Frozen and microwaved. The tortillas were the best part of the whole meal The tamales are horrible and the enchiladas were limp and soggy, more than usual. The beans had white furry stuff on top. The rice was crunchy. Don't spend money here. Don't take your family here.
We went there to watch a football game, we got chips and salsa, ordered a pitcher of Modelo while figuring out what to eat. We decided to pass on food and after our beer we asked for the bill and it was $25. I’m guessing we were penalized for not ordering food. Too many places to go that don’t price gouge.
