Opinions de John the Greek Restaurant San Antonio
I was very impressed! Our first visit and it won't be our last. The atmosphere was relaxed, the service was friendly and fast, and the food was delicious. The grape leaves were yummy, but the traditional gyro....IT WAS SO GOOD! The meat was so tender. It all just melts in your mouth, just savor the flavors.
I’ve been coming to John the Greek for almost 25 years. Whenever I’m in the area I try to swing by and sometimes I crave it so much that I just make the trip. Staff is always so friendly. Great service. I always feel like I’m at home when I come. Thank you!
So it seems that San Antonio has a large Greek set of restaurants, which of course is perfect for me! I started with a cup of each of their Greek soups- avgolemono, flakes (lentil) and my dad’s favorite fasoul (bean). They were all very good except the avgolemono was barely warm. Next up was Horiatiki. It was solid but no green peppers only a pepperocini! Yuck! Then i got a bunch of big ala carte things: mousakka, pasitito, dolmades, grilled octopus and spanakorizo (spinach and rice) all very good but the grilled octopus was pretty much flavorless. No problem, I used the lemon sauce from the dolmades and also mixed it with the spanakorizo! Overall, excellent food but everything could have been hotter.
We had a fabulous experience today. Our server, Brenda, offered us a regular menu, along with the lunch specials. We chose the gyro, soup and salad combo. Our soup was super good. The salad; goodness graciuos!! It was the best Greek salad we've ever had. Their homemade dressing is so good we even took a bottle home! Finally, the gyro was outstanding. It was well filled with a generous amount of meat, with onion and tomato, and delicious tzatziki sauce. We will definitely return here on our next visit. If you're reading this you should definitely come try it.
It's so nice. So many times I've driven passed it saying, "We should totally try it." to the wife. Finally we ate there. It's so good. The food, amazing. The people, so nice. The look, so cozy. We are going back. If you haven't been, you should go. You won't regret it. I regret not going sooner.
Stumbled upon this little gem and I must say, I'm a bit upset I did not find it sooner! There is nothing better than a family owned and operated restaurant and that is not an exception for John the Greek. Quaint and quiet dining area filled with Greek mementos. Staff was friendly and patient even when we were not being quick about what we wanted. Menu was expansive with many options for lunch combos as well as full menu for anything else Greek you would want. Food was fast but fresh and what a great value. Will return with rest of my family to enjoy great food in a family setting.
I recently discovered this little hole in the wall spot, and I’m so glad I did! The staff were some of the nicest and friendliest people I’ve ever met, which made the experience even better. The wait time was minimal, and the food came out quickly. It was absolutely delicious! This was my first time here, and it made me realize just how much I love Greek food. I’ll definitely be returning!
Visited during lunch hours, right before a small rush. No wait to be seated and very quick to get my food. Ordered the traditional gyro, fries, and baklava for dessert. Food came out piping hot and fresh. The tzatziki on the gyro was delicious. The fries were nice and crisp. The baklava was so good. Prices are fair with lunch and dinner specials to really get your bang for your buck. The aesthetic of the restaurant is cute and fun for that Greek feel. I definitely look forward to going back and trying more items on the menu.
Had a taste for Greek and I was recommended JTG by a coworker and vendor and boy were they not joking! It was gooder than good. I was surprised at the amount of flavor, as I had expectations that were exceeded exponentially! I ordered the dinner special, #12A, which is Traditional Gyro, Fries, salad, and drink. It was well worth the price, and I'll definitely be back to try other items on their menu.
I've dined at John the greek three times now and each time has been excellent. It's a family owned restaurant with a cozy atmosphere. If you want a relaxing dining experience, this place will never pressure you to leave or hurry up with an order. Each time the restaurant has been clean and service has been professional. The menu is extensive and there is something for everyone. Dishes are 11-16 dollars each. We ordered hummus and pita as an appetizer. The hummus was excellent. Definitely made in the kitchen and fresh. I ordered the octopus and my wife ordered a gyros plate. Everything came out to our liking.
Finally a place where when I buy a salad, they understand I want it to taste amazing, and want to be full by the end of it! The gyro salad was great! Olives were so tasty, and gyro was even crispy on the edges. I’m trying to be healthy with a salad, but I couldn’t pass up the baklava. It was fantastic. Staff was very nice and friendly, too. So happy to find an amazing local Greek restaurant!
We decided to check this place out on a Tuesday. It was quiet, just a few tables were taken. This place has indoor and also an outdoor dining area. The decor was quite nice as well. The food was good and the staff was friendly. There was quite a variety of dishes that included chicken, beef, lamb, seafood and veggies. Try the cold sampler platter, the feta cheese mix is delicious. They also have a kids menu. I am sure that you will find something that you like, no matter how picky you are. The meals come with a delicious side salad that you need to try.
Not going to say it was the best, as it's not exactly my style of food, but for what it's worth it was pretty good. Salad was pretty good. Olives are not pitted so be prepared. Beef souvlaki (kabob) was ok, light on onions and peppers, not my preferred steak seasoning. Oven baked potatoes and rice pilaf was good. Men's bathroom does not have alot of water pressure and a plunger that does not work properly. Turned on the AC and someone had thrown their TP in the trash can which made the entire bathroom smell. I'm assuming a regular or employee that knew the toilet would clog.
Great Greek food and the service feels like family, very friendly! I would recommend this place to anyone who loves Greek food. The food definitely is home made and tastes great. The Greek salad was delicious. The menu can be a bit overwhelming but overall the food is what matters! Would come again. Also the baclava was tasty!
This is a nice local joint to visit when you’d like a nice, decent meal. Cute outdoor patio, with excellent service. The food was good if you want something solid, but I found it to be a bit excessive on the salt. I was also looking for more Greek flavors if that makes sense. The pork chop was seasoned and grilled but didn’t have Mediterranean flavors. The rice pilaf seemed a bit more “American cafeteria”, but again edible. Based off of other reviews I was hoping for more. Maybe I just didn’t order the right dish??? Either way, it does seem like a very solid place, I’m willing to go again but order something else. I’ll update review once I do, I hear their falafel is really good. :)
I LOVE Greek and Mediterranean food and was looking forward to going to John the Greek because I'd heard so much good about it. Unfortunately either i went on a bad night or the cook has changed. My son got the chicken kabobs and i got the combo chicken and steak. Both my son and i thought the chicken was VERY bland, no flavor, literally just a plain piece of grilled chicken. So I thought, surely the steak would be better... Not much. The steak too was very bland. I don't know what happened but it seems they put no effort into seasoning either one. My rice was good, my son's fries were very soggy, the Greek salads were good and the oven baked potatoes were average at best. Like i said, i don't know if i got these guys on a bad night or what. From this example Dallahs blows them out of the water on both price and taste. Due to price, I'm not sure I'd try them again. Your milage may vary..
