Opinions de Chris' Ono Grinds San Diego
I tried Chris' Ono Grinds Island Grill in North Park and really enjoyed the Hawaiian flavors. The Huli Huli chicken was juicy and well seasoned, and the portions were generous. The place has a casual, laid-back vibe that makes it great for a quick and satisfying meal. Definitely a good spot in San Diego if you’re craving island-style comfort food.
This place is so good! Lack of indoor seating and parking were tragic for my afternoon time allowance but well worth it for my Hawaiian food craving. Would return & recommend! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Great food, very generous portions and fair prices. Kept it simple with huli huli chicken, white rice, and macaroni salad. All were very good, chicken especially tender and tasty. Free refills on the iced tea and lemonade which is a nice touch. My wife had the spicy poke bowl and mother in law had the volcano with chicken.
We came upon this place because of a recommendation from someone who had their shower catered bey Chris' Ono Grind Hawaiian Grill. They said they were great and the food was yummy. So, based on word-of-mouth recommendation, we proceeded to have our event catered (150-ish attendees). There were some issues. I was miles away in the SF Bay Area and my cousin was doing much of the legwork in San Diego. Chris Ono's catering staff was the best! First of all, they are a very smart bunch! They fed my cousin and she proceeded to order what I consider an obnoxious amount of food. In my estimation, enough to feed a small country. Feeling a bit over budget, we made the order and proceeded to pepper the catering rep with questions and refinements right up until our event. As time got near, when I got down to San Diego for our event, we went to their storefront in North Park on 30th St. I call it a storefront because inside there may have been seats, but there is basically a counter where you order and food is generally eaten outside (al fresco) in wonderful San Diego! The food is outstanding! Super fresh, tastes great and in my opinion, has the best macaroni salad (Hawaiian style) outside Hawaii! You get all kinds of food, from the portable (spam musubi), to the full-on meal (rice, salad, and protein). My personal favorite was the steak teriyaki and mac salad. All the dishes have that wonderful umami taste that is original yet oh so Hawaiian! It is a very neighborhood place! On a Friday afternoon, most of the diners were known by name, there is a brisk take-out business, and no one seemed unhappy. When we were talking to our catering rep, one of the diners actually came over to our table and said our event sounded wonderful and wished they could come too! We worried about, well, everything, but having a great meal and having all our concerns taken care of (need more chopsticks or plates? No problemo!) It was a great afternoon, and we left happy and not hungry! (A note here, there are no restrooms on site, but they have an agreement with neighboring places where you can use (clean) facilities). I have to say, the catering rep was outstanding! "On It", prompt, intuitive and eager to do a great job! And a great job they did! All our last-minute concerns were addressed with care and understanding (small driveway, we will come in the smaller van and park as far away from the door as possible!), the driver/delivery person was helpful, efficient and fast with our delivery. She checked in with me before she left to make sure everything was in order! The catering rep deserves to have a medal pinned to her chest and a substantial raise! That's how good she was! The food was out of this world! Many of our guests asked where the food came from and were surprised to find that Chris' Ono Grind catered as well! Stand-outs were the Huli-Huli chicken, Kalbi ribs and Sweet Potato Medallions. (Pro Tip - order extra huli-huli and guava BBQ sauce!) Even though I thought we ordered too much food, there were minimal leftovers! THAT'S the proof of a great meal! All n' all from top to bottom, beginning to end, Chris' Ono Grind Hawaiian was a great experience! Wonderful food, best mac salad outside of Hawaii, and a first-rate catering service! We would hire them again in a minute!
Our team loved working with Onos Catering at Flora the Venue! Communication beforehand was excellent, and Andrea was able to answer every question we had, which made planning so much smoother!! They came in prepared, calm, and easy to collaborate with. They treated our space and staff with real care and respect!!!(: Their team stayed kind and steady throughout the event, kept everything flowing, and made service feel seamless for everyone. Our staff, vendors, and guests all noticed the difference! We would work with them again without hesitation. They are a solid partner and a team you can trust!!!(:
We tried this grill on a Taste of Adam’s Ave and it was by far our favorite stop. Went back for a plate and they did not disappoint! The food is so good! So much flavor in the huli huli chicken and Mac salad! Will be back to try everything on the menu.
Great experience all around. Excellent value for very tasty food. Front server recommended spicy mayo with the spam musubi and she was 💯 Killer take out place!!!
This place is BUZZIIIIIN 💯. I was going to get ramen but the wait was too long and I’m glad I ended up coming here! The Mac salad and the chicken let me tell you is sooo good and packed with flavor! I had both flavors of the chicken since it was my first time and let me tell you both were amazing! I loved that the chicken was so tender! I’ll be definitely coming back to this spot! A must try forsures for anyone looking for a great meal. The service over the phone was perfect I stated that it was my first time and was very polite and patient! I’m happy I discovered delicious spot! Thanks to the guys working tonight 🤝
My husband and I love coming to this Hawaiian spot! Super fresh ingredients and portion sizes are huge. We either share or we will take food home for left overs! The Huli Huli chicken plate is super flavorful and has the perfect crisp. It also comes with 2 scoops of rice and a side (we got the Mac salad). We have gotten the pork before which is also amazing but after coming so many times the chicken is our staple! We got the spam musubi which is omggggg to die for! I could have had 4 more of those yesterday. The staff is always super helpful! There is outdoor seating, which we have never had a problem grabbing. It can definitely get crowded so even if there aren’t any spots by the time the food comes out something usually opens up. Free water is available too! Still dreaming of the Mac salad and spam musubi which is also super fresh!!!
I am very impressed by this totally hole in the wall unassuming restaurant! Their huli-huli chicken is so damn good, the spam musubi is also fire. Also tried the kahlua pork, which was just ok in comparison with the other dishes. Pineapple pico and salsas were great also. We’re definitely glad we stumbled upon it. I’ll try the poke next time! There’s no indoor seating, but there’s plenty of outdoor seating. Service is register only. There’s almost no people eating here so it’s a nice quiet place to lunch. A lot of people order their food to go.
Amazing Hawaiian food! It is even tastier than the one I got in Hawaii. Loved BBQ guava pork - super tender pulled pork with pineapple and rice. Poke bowl was amazing as well - fresh tuna and avocado, simple but delicious. The dessert, coconut custard, was a unique and out of this world experience. Definitely recommend 💕💕💕!!!
Ono Grinds was a quick, delicious lunch. We got our food in about 15 minutes and the service was quick. We opted for the hibiscus lemonade (yum), the spam musubi, Huli huli chicken / char siu pork combo with Mac salad and the Kalua pork plate with sweet potato. The chicken and pork was very flavourful and saucy. The Kalua pork was delicious. I highly recommend and will be back for more!
Went to their set up at Liberty Station Public Market. Got in line, ordered our food and within a few minutes our order was done. Found a nice spot to sit outside and eat. The food was absolutely delicious. We will definitely eat there again and also try out their physical location. Poke Bowl & Volcano Chicken was 🔥!
⭐ Huli Huli Chicken = must try This spot is a good start if you’re craving Hawaiian BBQ. The food overall is good, not wow, but the Huli Huli chicken definitely stands out and is a must try. The wait can be long, and in my case they actually forgot to make my food until I reminded them, so it’s worth keeping an eye on your order. Service was friendly, though not the fastest. There’s no indoor seating, but plenty of outdoor tables. A nice perk is that the staff is happy to adjust or remove umbrellas however you like, so you can sit comfortably.
The huli huli chicken was really yummy. It was perfectly cooked and not dry, and the sauce on it tastes similar to what you’d expect while still being unique. The Kalua pork was fine. It had good flavor and some pieces were pretty moist, but some others were dry. The slaw was good, though I generally prefer less creamy slaws, but that’s just my preference. Staff was nice and the food came out fairly quickly. We ate outside and everything was clean and tidy.
Tried this spot for the first time since we were visiting Sea World San Diego and we wanted some Hawaiian food to eat afterwards. Being from Oahu, I see “Huli Huli chicken” and my thoughts immediately go back to being a kid and my dad stopping at an abandoned parking lot in Nanakuli to buy some huli huli chicken from a man roasting and selling chicken leg quarters in clear plastic bags where you can see the steam and juices from the marinade and the bags are nice and hot to the touch. And that is the flavor and chicken my dad and I expected when we ordered the “Huli Huli chicken” from the menu. When we opened our plates, what we saw were sliced chicken pieces with a sauce poured over it. When we tasted it, both my dad and I said “that’s not huli huli chicken, it’s barbecue chicken.” If you’re from Hawaii (not sure if the other islands make em the same from where I grew up on Oahu) don’t expect it to taste like that type of huli huli chicken I described above. It didn’t taste bad, it just didn’t taste like the one’s we’re used to. Other than that, I appreciate the rice portions because lots of other hawaiian plate lunch franchises in California don’t give enough rice (poly problems lol), although I would still prefer the protein ratio to match cause then I had a lot of rice left over 🤷🏽♀️. The food satisfied my Hawaiian food cravings minus the nostalgic taste of the chicken I was looking forward to which is why I give this plate lunch a 3/5. Not bad but not memorable for me either.
So sad. This used to be my favorite spot for Hawaiian food. It is no longer. The portions have gotten smaller by A LOT, the quality is not what it used to be, and of course the prices have gone up. They are consistently out of product (sweet potato). They also changed up a combination option that was simply the best. Unfortunately I cannot say this is somewhere I’ll visit again.
lil portions of chicken and i paid 24.99 for something that was made less than 5 mins to cook. can’t believe this look at this small portion of chicken i paid for double and this is what i get. last time id ever spend my money here. good food but not worth the money also the spam masubi where cold and the rice tasted so like it was made yesterday. never coming here again.
I ordered Khalua Pork it was so bland had no flavor and they give a small portion which Im glad about now because it was not good. Macaroni salad tastes bland like something you would buy at a grocery store Overall was not authentic Hawaiian food not good , the sauces tasted sour and off
Ordered a poke bowl. Fish didn’t seem to fresh, not chilled. Rice was like uncle Ben’s white rice. it was closed 2 prior mondays I was excited to try. I won’t be going back. I do hope it gets better.
First time here and definitely the last. I sat outside waiting for my order and watched three people who came in after me get their food first. Was outside for 25-30 mins waiting for a kalua pork and huli huli combo plate when someone came out to ask if I was still waiting for food and was told they'd start making it right away after I said yes. It took no more than 5 minutes for the combo plate to come out which was odd. Even though they gave two complimentary spam musubis, it doesn't make up for the fact that the portion is super small, the kalua pork is dry, the huli huli is borderline burnt, and the rice is undercooked. Basically, they forgot about my order and rushed to make it to get it out because they knew I waited for nearly half an hour. An absolute terrible experience.
