Definitely recommend this place. Walking distance from the beach in the main strip of Ocean Beach, inside has a cool vibe. Service was fast and friendly. The burger were massive and very well seasoned. I still think about it to this day. Wedge fries were also crispy. Huge amount of food ripped after a nice day out. Definitely recommend if you’re in town, will be going again!
If you want an iconic San Diego burger experience, Hodad’s delivers exactly what it promises. The service matches that beachy rhythm too, so settle in, loosen up, and enjoy the ride. The giant milkshakes are part of the legend for a reason. They’re thick, massive, and basically a dessert and a workout all in one. Don’t skip it. The Blue Jay — a bacon cheeseburger piled high with blue cheese and grilled onions — is a standout. I saw someone complain the onions were cut too thick, but that’s kind of the point. You gotta know what you’re getting into. A Hodad burger doesn’t do subtle. It’s stacked high with generous layers of lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, and their secret sauce — a messy, glorious flavor bomb that somehow all works together in pure bliss. If you’re a beer drinker, the michelada’s are on point as well.
The prices are frankly on par with the other beach eateries. But the quality is fantastic! Wife got a "mini" bacon cheeseburger. The mini was a lie... pictured lol. But, those are the ones that are fun and to your advantage. I got the Guido burger as a pastrami addict, and it did not disappoint! We also got split onion rings and fries. My wife claims the fries are some of the best she's had - which probably is true since i don't like fries - and I rather enjoyed them. Overall a great spot worthy of its reputation! If you're feeling a little frugal the mini burgers are great value as they're double the size of any fast food burger and also twice as good. The burgers are a little messy but not ridiculously so - and the staff is very friendly. Will definitely return!
The iconic burger joint in OB! Great food and atmosphere, though a little pricey. Yet the fries are bomb and th onion rings are perfect crisp, great portions too. My wife has known them for a long time and I used to hit up when I was skateboarding in town. Always a good grab.
Awesome burger and service!! My Wife and I wanted to try out a burger, so we chose to split one. They split it and made two separate meals for us. We didn't even ask for that, but they went above and beyond. Thanks for the great meal and experience!! We'll definitely be coming back. 👍👍
Super atmosphere, it was recommended by a friend and did not disappoint. I had the bacon cheese burger. MASSIVE amount of fries and onion rings to share. We each had a burger abs split the fries. It was $75 for dinner, wouldn't do it everyday (huge burgers), but with the trip. Paid for parking, got some food, quick 3 minute walk to the beach. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. VERY FRIENDLY STAFF! Made is a great dinner.
The burgers and shakes are amazing! The portions are huge, the milkshakes are flavorful, and they throw a heaping scoop of strawberry ice cream on top of the shake; the burgers are delicious, some of the best burgers I've had in south Cali. The only letdown is that it gets a little crowded and parking is a nightmare. It gets busy and hectic, staff are very welcoming and friendly.
If you're looking for BIG burgers, this is the place. The shake, fries and onions are absolutely huge, and with lots of flavor. Price may be a bit high, but you can expect with the big portions and options from 12-24 dollars.
My goodness, this place was awesome! My dad's friend recommended that we eat here while in San Diego. Literally the best burger we've ever had! So delicious! The onion rings were delicious also. So crispy and the batter was very tasty. The atmosphere was cool too. Music you could sing along with and license plates hung all over the walls.

There is a reason this place is famous for their burgers and were featured on diners, drive ins, and dives. AND in the shows #10 burgers ever! Saying this place is so good isn’t enough. The burgers are flavorful and stacked and we only got the single. We also got their chocolate shake which was delicious, you get icecream on top! The atmosphere is so fun, very beach surfer vibes. It has music going and difference license plates hung up. Not far from the beach either so a quick walk if you take it to go. Service was quick and very friendly. Definitely recommend! I wish this place as closer to where I live! You can also get merch if you want.
This place was suggested by our Uber driver. This was one of the best hamburger places I have been too. I would highly recommend it if you are visiting San Diego. The food tasted great and our server was amazing. Plus being right next to the beach made the atmosphere perfect. Especially if you sit facing the outside. 10 out of 10 place!
Hodad’s!! It's an iconic burger joint in Ocean Beach, but even if it wasn't, the burgers are fantastic! The onion rings are definitely worth the upcharge. And it's a great value, too. You will probably have to wait in line to be seated, but it's worth it. And you can see some really interesting characters on Newport Avenue. Try going during an off time, if you don't want to wait. The food is freshly prepared. 100% recommend!
If you are looking for a local burger joint, this is the place! The staff are super friendly and service is pretty quick. I appreciated the different burger size options: mini, single or double. This was my second time here and I will definitely be back each time I’m in San Diego! The atmosphere is very fun with lots of old license plates as decorations.

We came all the way from Georgia for Labor Day weekend to celebrate our anniversary, and what we experienced here was way more than just a great meal. Our server, Chris, made us feel like family from the moment we sat down. He went above and beyond to make sure our visit was special, and that turned a great burger joint into one of the highlights of our trip. If you’re in Ocean Beach, do yourself a favor and stop by Hodad’s. And if you’re lucky enough to have Chris as your server, you’ll leave with not just a full stomach, but also a truly memorable experience.
Great place for a burger. I got the single with bacon with fries and a side of the famous blue cheese. everything was fresh and the burger was one of the best I had while visiting San Diego. highly recommend if your near Ocean Beach.
Cool local spot with a vibe that is all it's own. The decor was visually appealing with all the license plates and stickers. I had the Guido burger and fries. Very filling and full of flavor. The amount of pastrami on the burger was perfect. If your ever in the OB check out Hodad's.
This place is a good spot if you want a heavy meal. I got a double cheeseburger and they do not disappoint. For $20 I had to see why. Surprisingly a good value for being a restaurant next to the beach. Service was great, our sever was on top of it even though it was busy. Basket for fries is a must, shared it with 2 kids and my wife. If you’re planning on showing your dad bod after for the beach this place is a must. I was on a short trip in San Diego for an event for work, I only had one free day, and Hodad’s was on my top 3 MUST place to eat! Well I had very high expectations, you know what?
