Opinions de Lazy Hippo San Diego
Delicious gluten free chocolate chip pancakes and huge potions ! Great coffee and a huge vegan tofu scramble plate. I loved this place! Went 2x in a week for those amazing pancakes
My husband is still talking about the cinnamon roll pancakes weeks later. The food, service and atmosphere was fantastic. My only regret is that I don’t remember our waitresses name to give her a shout out.
The Lazy Hippo is such a lovely cafe! The food was excellent; staff is friendly and gracious! The outdoor patio is small, but so cute! It's worth coming early to get a seat! :) also, it's a dog-friendly place in case you like dogs!
Great drinks and food. I would opt for the combo for brunch - pancake with eggs. The bloody Mary is huge and comes in a boot so if you're a fan it'll do you for the meal. So far the cocktails have all been great. My go-to downtown brunch spot
They cooked my bacon exactly as I requested. My wife loved the cinnamon roll pancake. She got the gluten- free option for the pancake and it exceeded her expectations. I would definitely eat here again.
Loved this cute little cafe! It’s been redesigned from the photo displayed on google. It’s now a black and white chic French theme. Food and hot tea were good, service was exceptional. So glad I found this cafe while exploring!
The best breakfast place I have ever been to. The polite staff are very welcoming. The vibe and music are beyond excellent. The food is fantastic!!!!!! The orange juice is heavenly. This is my second time in this place and I am beyond speech. A must have experience and you won't regret it. Cheers.
The food, I got was perfect. Orange juice came in a cool bottle, it was orange juice with pulp. The coffee was a rich bold taste. I got enfrigilos which was a taste explosion in my mouth. The other great thing about the place was the pictures of Audrey Hepburn. This decor was perfect.
I had the Gluten free cinnamon roll pancakes and they were so good I didn't even use syrup. The best gluten free pancakes I've ever had. My bf said his California burrito was also very good. I also got a blackberry bellini and I would recommend that as well.
This is my favorite breakfast spot downtown! I've been coming here for breakfast for a few years now and have only had good experiences. The staff is sweet, food is great, portions are large, and the atmosphere is very unique and homey. The water is infused which may throw you off first sip but it is delicious. Expect downtown prices.
I always love the Lazy Hippo. Food is spectacular. Sad they don't have the inside open anymore. I enjoyed the broken wall with the brick interior.
We had the sparkly table, which was actually pretty cool. The staff was nice especially our server. Yago was engaged, friendly and made sure we had the best experience. My friend and I had brunch, the food was great and the mimosas were yummy! Highly recommend this place for brunch, and I’ll have to come to explore more of their menu.
Amazing atmosphere, food, and hospitality. The owner and her staff are wonderful, friendly and attentive. The cinnamon roll pancakes are to die for. The eggs Benedict...yummy. My kids chocolate milk was one do they best I’ve ever tasted. We can’t wait to return.
Was a little confused at first, as the building was labeled The Wiskey House. Its not a mistake. Brunch was excellent - we both had the special. I got mine with double chorizo, which was absolutely fantastic. For my pancake, i chose the cinnamon roll pancake, which lived up to its name! Didnt partake, but if you want to have access to a large selection of whiskey, this looked like a place to go. Wall to wall shelves of bottles, including the hallway back to the restrooms. Very nice, relaxed interior, too.
I got the salmon eggs Benedict and it was worth the price. My waiter was amazing and the food came out quick. I just wanted a breakfast place indoors I could enjoy just a regular cup of coffee. The interior is precious kinda hip-chic and best of all parking was easy.
Great friendly service even when they're busy. I had the California burrito and it was so full of flavor the meat was juicy and their fries are delicious. This is probably the best Cali Burrito I've ever had! 😋 We also ordered their kale salad with chicken. The chicken was also full of flavor and juicy.
Absolutely one of our favorite places to visit and eat breakfast in San Diego! The food is amazing. Staff is great! Got a chance to meet the owner and her family! They are very friendly, hard working and have made this place absolutely amazing! We'll continue to return here as long as we are in San Diego!
Hidden gem. Service is courteous and attentive. Well priced and food is amazing. Breakfast enchilada is tasty and filling. Their cinnamon pancakes are delicious. Will definitely revisit. Gluten free friendly
So delicious! I got the breakfast burrito with the fresh squeezed OJ. It was AMAZING. Our waiter was so helpful, kind, and suggested the best items for us. (Monday 3/2/20 around 10am... I'm not sure what his name was) This was the best breakfast experience we had on our trip to San Diego!
First time stopping in. I am staying a couple blocks away and this was the perfect place for a late breakfast. The food was great and the service was too. Would highly recommend coming by. I had one of their egg sandwiches. Could have easily split it with someone else.
Relaxing atmosphere that turned busy with a rush. Staff was polite and fun with great suggestions. Food was all delicious with the cinnamon pancakes being a stand out. Drinks were refreshing and hit just the right spot.
Food is so good! Portion size is really good too. Service is friendly. They have nice seats to sit outside or inside if you prefer. First time here and we enjoyed it very much. Recommend trying their fresh juices!
Always amazing. Great staff wish I could get out there more often.
We showed up 10 minutes after opening on a Saturday and got a table immediately. Staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. The food was spectacular. We got the Cinnamon Roll pancakes and they were amazing!!! We also got the huevos rancheros and it was a healthy portion. We will definitely be recommending this place to everyone, it’s worth the hype!
We ate brunch here on a Sunday morning and loved the food. The breakfast enchiladas were great. The kids got pancakes, which were enormous and delicious. The pancakes were thick and fluffy, and covered nearly the entire plate.
Everything here was fantastic. The service was great and very fast. Food quality was A grade all the way. We went there on Sunday. So they served brunch at the place next door which was also very nice. And if you're looking for a place that's not crowded , this is it.
Great brunch experience with the fam at the Lazy Hippo/Whiskey House! Highlights were the California burrito, lemon ricotta waffles and cinnamon roll pancakes. And of course the Maria Bloody Maria that made me a mezcal fan! Highly recommend coming here, very chill vibe, good service and great food.
Service was good and super cute atmosphere! The food came out quick and yummy! Would recommend.
Great choice of breakfast for everyone! Trio the Pancakes were very good and more than enough for 1 person. The egg bacon sandwich with country potatoes was also delicious. You can‘t do anything wrong by trying this cute restaurant. Please note that the restaurant is located at the whiskey bar next to the store with the name „Lazy Hippo“ on it so don‘t get confused because they own both stores.
The menu has a good selection of delicious dishes! We were served breakfast on The Whiskey House outdoor patio which is on a quiet street. The wood picnic tables were comfortable and have large umbrellas for shade.
Good food, pleasant service. Delicious Mimosa.
I ate here in 2023, and I still have dreams about the meal. The steak and eggs was the single best breakfast I have ever eaten in my whole life.
This is a great spot for a delicious breakfast. They have both savory and sweet breakfast options. I opted for the special with strawberry French toast - amazing! Could have easily shared this between two folks! Such a big portion. Quick and friendly service and outdoor seating but right next to a street.
My favorite brunch spot in San Diego; I stop here everytime I'm in town. It is a small quaint french breakfast. The cinnamon roll pancake is the signature item and does not dissapoint. The banana stuffed french toast is also really tasty.
So good!!! Cute area of town. I am gluten and dairy free and I was able to order pancakes that were safe for me to eat which is a rare occurrence. They were delicious! My husband ordered crepes on a stick which he said were also good. The place itself is adorable with a vintage-kitchy look. Servers were great too, all around I highly recommend it.
Had a brunch date one Saturday weekend and there wasn't any wait at around 10am. Crowd started coming in around 11. Highly recommend trying this place out for brunch. Huge portions! I ordered the Super Special and the waffle with nutella & banana was AMAZING. Their huevos rancheros was bomb too. Downside is parking - might have to look for a while.
Cute local place for breakfast, brunch and lunch. Fun decor inside. Several tables (with umbrella) outside for street side dining. Big menu, lots of hearty as well as healthy / veggie / vegan options. Scrambles, enchiladas and hue is divorciados are my faves. BIG portions. Secret is that they are linked with the Whiskey Bar next door so they have yummy cocktails as well as coffee and tea. It’s usually busy but tables turn quick. Several long tables for groups as well as deuces for couples. They are pet friendly. Friendly servers. They accommodate your dietary requests.
After having a terrible experience with a snotty hostess around the corner, we came here in a rush. A very nice waiter seated us immediately and understood our rush. We ordered quickly, getting some coffee and the super special (2 eggs, 2 meats, potatoes and a pancake) within 10 minutes. It’s difficult to mess breakfast up, but theirs was on point anyways. The eggs were done sunny side up right, the pancake was light and fluffy, and their chorizo was fantastic with a nice spice hint. The coffee was even pretty good. We ate and left pretty quickly, but did not get to really experience the place much. Honestly, I’d prefer this place to the other local establishments since it’s got the same atmosphere and great food. I’m in San Diego fairly often, so I’m pretty sure I’ll be coming back here. Note that a lot of the pictures seem different. This is because they have two areas, one of which is a whiskey house that looks pretty awesome. They have one large selection of drinks, that’s for sure.
Really good breakfast place. The coffee is really good here. They seem to have a number of unique foods as well. We got the crepes on a stick and the cinnamon roll pancakes. Both were quite sugary. The cinnamon roll pancakes were amazing.

The food was good, the decor was great, but I picked this place because google listed this under a “great for kids” list... it is NOT great for kids. First off, there is no kids menu, secondly, they served my 4 year old her drink in a glass mason jar with no lid... definitely not a kid friendly place. But it was a good place to stop and get a bite to eat if you don’t have kids.
Local brunch cafe. Menu has typical breakfast offerings like waffles, omelettes, pancakes. Interior was a little tight, but cozy. Staff were very friendly and service was quick. Prices were fair, great for a quick bite alone or with a small group. Within walking distance of many nearby hotels.
Lovely building and decorations, very friendly staff. Had banana pb oatmeal and salmon on sourdough both delicious. Definitely recommend and its just an adorable building. The toilets and sink area were also refreshingly nice.
The food was great, which in my case was tortillas with eggs. I also had a glass of dark beer They got busy during the lunch time we were here. The place looks gorgeous to my eyes, mostly in black and white. Not big. Just enough space for meals during the day. Service was OK and helpful.
Cute little spot, nice day for outdoor dining. Food was delicious, chef is on point. Only reason for 4 stars was the server. If the server was better I'd give 5. Very inattentive, no offer for refills, no extra napkins with kids, gave us an out of date menu which led to ordering food we didn't intend to order. Sitting outside on the sun, ice melts fast. Server offered my kid crayons but then never brought them, which who cares about crayons but why offer and then not do it? There was no wait, there were empty tables, so no excuse. My hubby was a server for years, and we always tip great, except when it is clearly not deserved. I would have tipped the chef tho, he saved the day. When you are in hospitality, you should act like you know that. I'd go back and try a different server, definitely. Chef can cook some eggs!
I had the 2 egg breakfast. It came with potatoes, 2 pieces of bacon, and a piece of toast. I had my eggs scrambled, it came out more than 2 eggs I am sure! They were not dry; the potatoes could have been a bite more crispy; the toast, I would have liked a bit thicker. Overall though the food was good. My husband enjoyed the same breakfast accept he had the one with the cinnamon roll pancake and double meat. They did forget to add the second helping. The pancake was delicious and really not overly sweet. (No syrup used.) The deco of this little restaurant was eclectic and cute-black and white.
Quirky place with eclectic staff and indoor/outdoor dining. The food was good (we had breakfast), and the portions were generous. Members of the staff we encountered were attentive and friendly. I'd definitely go back next time I'm in San Diego.
Here for Comic-con 2019. The Lazy Hippo is situated nicely between the Convention Center and Hotels in Gaslamps. Food-wise it's not the cheapest of eats but for the price, location, and portion size it meets everything I would want on the go during convention times. Totally satisfied with the breakfast burrito. I'm not a tiny eater and their breakfast burrito hit the spot. Totally recommended if you in the area for a convention. Service may lag a little but be patient.
The food here was solid. A good breakfast spot. I would probably pass on the waffle next time. Not that I was bad, but the strawberry sauce tastes too artificial and it just doesn’t taste well with the real strawberries. They also served it with a syrup packet. However, the Enfrijoladas Loaded was a solid breakfast dish that I would definitely recommend.
Excellent brunch spot in gaslamp, with everything you’d want - large portions, good food, extensive drink menu, etc. The only negative thing we experienced was a bit of a long wait for the food/drinks, and two of the beers we ordered were unavailable. However, the food was hot when it arrived, the service was still good, and we enjoyed our experience. Get their breakfast special!
It's open! It's the same spot as the Whiskey House! I know it's a bit confusing just go with it. The store fronts are right next from each other. First time here, super excited after seeing the reviews. The vegan menu is a bit small 3 items but the vegan enchiladas with soyrizo (+$2) is delicious! It's topped with fresh avocado, pick de Gallo and shredded lettuce. Put a few dabs of Cholula hot sauce and it's perfection. I cleared that plate so quick. I love vegetables on everything I eat, even if it's a side dish. I really liked the avocados on top and the shredded lettuce it added a fresh crisp crunch to the soft enchiladas. The soyrizo added that extra flavor. I would order that again. Might try the vegan breakfast burrito next. Indoor and outdoor seating available. It's inside the whiskey house so there is a bar and comfy couch seating area. Inside is very dark and chill. Loved the music it was on point that morning. Service, was good. A bit slow when it comes to the check. But they kept checking in on us and made sure we got everything we needed. Hostess was super accommodating we moved 3 times since it was cold. Will be back! Parking is paid metered street parking.

Food is pretty good. The inside of the restaurant looks nice as well. My only complaint is that during busy hour, it would take a while for the food to be served. So expect at least 1 hour here.
I'm not a San Diego Native... Just visiting from LA area. The Lazy Hippo caught my attention due to the unique name, but I wasn't very impressed with the food. We ordered a basic eggs and meat dish for a late breakfast and the food was served to our table slightly cool. The order needed to be corrected twice and the sausage was pretty bland. The cafe environment was very welcoming and friendly... But I wouldn't say it was my favorite place.
Nice atmosphere, very cute design, and clearly a popular spot. Expect 15-20 min wait after 10am on the weekends. Nice and helpful staff. Good menu variety, the food was decent. Fresh and prepared well, but a little lacking in flavor and excitement.
I used to come here each time i was in town. As i returned to San Diego i was really excited to be back. But this time i was slightly disappointed. I don't know if there has been a Chang of ownership, but the tea used to be really good, true loose leaves in a tea pot, now? You're down to a cup with lulu warm water that smells coffee.
The food was great. We had blueberry pancakes, bacon, and a ham and cheese omelet. The service was not as good, and seemed unnecessarily hampered by strange rules. The servers that took drink orders could not take food orders at the same time, which made everything take considerably longer than needed. They also put up a bit of a fuss when we asked to split our bill, which also took longer than it should have.
We were seated for brunch in the whiskey bar next door (seems like this might be a joint restaurant now? The storefront looked closed.). Great atmosphere for a whiskey bar, but a little too dark for brunch. I actually really want to go back in the evening to explore the amazing whiskey selection. Good food (the potatoes were on point), but got the sense they were trying to sell cocktails with a side of brunch rather than the reverse.
Still recovering from the food poisoning I got from dining there yesterday. I believe it was from the sausage patty, which tasted questionable. It was a little light in the center but not quite pink. But other than that, the food was tasty. Coffee was too watered down. The service was a bit slow. No one else in my group got food poisoning, so I guess I was the lucky one.
The food was descent and prices good. Service was a bit slow but the decor is cute. A bit tucked away from the main corridor of downtown San Diego so waits are not as long as at the Gaslamp Quarter. The restaurant next door is for the nightlife and so they share a hallway where you’ll see what looks like a museum display of bottle of alcohol.

The food was meh! The strawberry waffle was a hard waffle slathered in strawberry syrup- gross. And they brought me a runny egg, when I asked foe scrambled. I almost threw up! The cinnamon roll pancakes were good. The food was overpriced and not memorable, I had forgotten that we’d eaten there
Food was so-so and service was lacking. The hostess also serves as the busser so was understandably harried and annoyed. Wait staff was fine. This place is known for their fresh squeezed juices so I ordered the pineapple cucumber ginger concoction. Waiter said it would take a half hour to make it and if I wanted something now I could only get orange juice. So I got the orange juice, which was very good. I always prefer it when restaurants make their own veggie patties for veggie burgers instead of using Beyond or Impossible burgers so decided to try the house-made black bean burger. It wasn't horrible. A bit salty and the patty was burned and crunchy on the outer edges. The fries were hard and greasy on the outside and chalky on the inside. Recommend swapping them out for the breakfast potatoes, which I saw on the table next to me. They looked decent although I haven't tried them. The decor and atmosphere were pleasant. The menu has interesting things on it. Great ideas albeit not particularly well executed. A bit overpriced for what you get.

This place had so many good reviews, we decided to try it. What a mistake, seems to be a tourist trap. We knew the wait would be long but if the food and drinks are is outstanding, it would be worth it. Nope, the food and drinks were mediocre at best. My pancakes were mushy and tasteless and my husband's breakfast sandwich was greasy and too salty. What a disappointment! Service was subpar too!
Worst experience. Waited over an hour and 2 rounds of drinks later. Waiter got defensive when we asked where our food was. Started telling us depending what you order is how long it takes. Everyone around us got their food and we were two people. What a joke. At the end the food came quick somehow and waiter just kept. “It’s on the house. I don’t know what else to tell you”. I just said can we just get our check? The food would’ve been nice without the comments. Not a good method of resolution.
Front staff was not good at managing seating. We waited for an hour when they told us that the wait was going to be 15-20 minutes for a table for two. We did not specify any preference for outdoor/indoor seating, and there were several open tables indoor and outdoor. Ultimately, they just gave us a table at one of those seatings that have been open and available for the past hour. The worst table management skills ever.
The WORST service. We waited about 20 min. to place an order and that was only because we complained to the manager... otherwise who knows how long we would've waited. I don't know who our waiter was because they never came around to check on us. We always had to get someone for any service... that is until the check came around. They didn't even give me a refill on my coffee. The prices are too high for the quality of food. Definitely not worth it.
Horrible service. Waited outside and not one person acknowledged us. Finally we got seated, nobody said hello, nobody was smiling. We got our menus and after we finally waved the waiter down telling him we were ready to order, he said he would be right back since another table was seated first. He took their order and then proceeded to do many other things instead of taking our order. 5-7 minutes went by. So we got up and left and the couple next to us did the same thing since they had not had their order taken either. Save yourself a bad experience and go elsewhere.
I was really disappointed that this was where we spent our only opportunity to have breakfast in San Diego. It took longer than necessary for us to get waters and have our order taken - but the worst part was after the food came. My boyfriend's order was completely wrong and he sent it back to get the right dish. Meanwhile, my dish was correct but it was lukewarm. I started eating, thinking my boyfriend would be getting his food soon - but it took an additional 20 minutes to get it. His food was also lukewarm at best. We then had to take our credit cards up to the server in order to be cashed out. It wasn't busy when we were there so I'm not sure why the service was so slow. But I can't in good faith recommend that anyone go here. =/
The Lazy Hippo wasn't open when I visited, even though the hours posted online said they would be, but a sign out front directed us next door to a Whiskey joint and the food there was fantastic. The gentleman who took our order was nice, and was kind enough to offer a suggestion when discussing my order with me that I am very happy he did so because with his suggestion, I didn't order too much food.
We were not at all impressed. First we waited to get seated (as the sign said) bit were completely ignored. The waiter passed by us, looked at us, bit nothing. So sat ourselves. Had to wait 30min for our food. As others have pointed out, the food was lukewarm. Waffles seemed to be frozen (very very hard). Eggs from egg mix. The fruit was yucky (see pic). Really quite unbelievable for this price! They do not have any cappuccino or espresso. Just filter coffee.
