Wow, talk about some amazing food and service. This has to be one of the best Ethiopian restaurants I’ve been to in America. It’s a hole in the wall for sure, but that adds to the charm. The person waiting on us was so kind, so nice, so helpful. You could see him literally running to the back to place orders and run food. The table next to us was a little complicated. He told them they weren’t setup for tea or coffee on a Monday night. The diners insisted and he finally said, you know what, I can make it for you, but it will not be presented as normal, but I can make it in the back, to which the diners agreed. He ran to the back and next thing you know, tea and coffee were brought to them….extraordinary. As a former restaurant worker, I’d have not asked them to go through the effort, but this was above and beyond. When I was leaving, they had some bread on the counter and I asked what it was and he described it and then gave us some to sample….it was amazing! Anyway, we had the #1 special (it’s spicy but not super hot..for reference, I eat 2-3 Thai chilis raw with just about every meal, so YMMV) and the vegetarian combo. It was all so so so very delicious. I will definitely be back!

Delicious, soulful Ethiopian food in a humble and welcoming spot. We had the veggie and meat combo and everything was full of flavor. The Ethiopian coffee was the perfect finish. Great host and a great experience overall. Highly recommend.

Awash has wonderful, flavorful food. The best option is to go to the restaurant first and speak with the owner about what you should eat and how spicy things are before you try ordering online through DoorDash. Ethiopian food can be variable depending on his it is prepared. We visited for my birthday and followed the owner's recommendations based on our parameters. We were not disappointed. I enjoyed the ribs and other beef dishes. They have Ethiopian coffee, beer, and Mexican Coke (cane sugar based) products. The ambiance is nothing spectacular; the restaurant is the front half of a convenience store with an eclectic mix of goods worth browsing (Italian Panettone, butane grills, beer/wine, motor oil). Definitely worth visiting for the food!

I had such a wonderful experience at this Ethiopian restaurant in San Diego! The food was absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and full of authentic taste. The customer service was amazing; everyone was so warm and welcoming, and it truly felt like being treated as family. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, which makes it a perfect place to enjoy a meal with loved ones. If you’re looking for great Ethiopian food with excellent hospitality, this is definitely the place to go. Highly recommend!

One of our favorite spots to eat in San Diego. We try and visit each trip down. We have been going here since we were introduced to Awash by a friend back in 2011. Excellent food, and very kind owner/staff. Would recommend!

The food was great! A friend of mine brought me here for a new experience as he’s been many times in the past and raves about their delicious cuisine! And let me say they did not disappoint! 5/5 stars! Come check them out! They are super kind and friendly too! Enjoy!

Was just looking for something quick on the way to a class, popped in here for some food, and was incredibly surprised in the most wonderful way. The owners were very charming and attentive, made us feel welcome and even spent time with us to give us recommendations on the menu and teach us how to eat using our hands with the injera! What started out as a need to get some quick nourishment ended up being a fun and happy experience eating delicious and authentic Ethiopian cuisine. Highly recommend!

My first time eating Ethiopian food. I had a friend recommend me a few dishes. I love the spices. Only thing is I had a hard time eating with my hands, without utensils and using the special bread. I also enjoyed the drinks, particularly the ginger tea.

The food is so good and the price is reasonable compared to other restaurants in San Diego. The service is a bit slow but it is worth the wait! We ordered the meat combo, vegetarian combo and Awaze Tibs which is enough for 3-4 people. There was no onsite parking so need to find street parking. It was not very difficult to find a spot on a Saturday night.

I have no idea what I ate, all I know is it was amazing. Demilie recommended a delicious dish and I simply said yes. Great taste, quality ingredients, freshly made. It was perfect. The name of the dish was kitfo gomen and miser lentils. A little too spicy. I wish they had different levels of spice but non the less delicious. Thanks to the friendly and amazing server Demilie

First time eating Ethiopian food! The owner is very nice like other reviewers have said. Idk how this compares to other Ethiopian food but I got the Meat Combo as recommended; It's great with its own distinct flavor, and the restaurant has its own distinct smell. Make sure you remember to bring either an empty stomach or multiple stomachs, because I went alone and had eaten breakfast and got full way too fast. And if you just happen to need beer, ingredients, oil for your car, detergent, or an Ethiopian Bible (and other Ethiopian literature), this place has you covered.

First time trying Ethiopian food and it was delicious! Husband and I attempt to try a new cuisine every month, and glad we came across this place. Large potion size too! 2 sides and 1 entree were enough for both of us (and we're both big eaters) Awash Special Tibs - this was delicious! Really perfectly cooked beef tenderloin, lovely curry (right amount of spicy and didn't seem too oily even though it had butter). Injera - so soft and so fluffy and flavorful! And really big too! Husband enjoyed it plain as well! Tikil Gomen (cabbage side dish) - this had a lot of flavor, but also too much butter. Nice dish overall. Gomen (collard greens side dish) - this was soso. Decent flavor, but had a bit of pungent taste to it for some reason. Probably won't recommend it. Red paste that was on the ribs was nice. Very strong flavor so I wouldn't recommend having too much per bite.

Delicious food in the middle of an Ethiopian market. It’s kind of cluttered and messy. The service was OK. We waited a while even though they didn’t appear overly busy. The food arrived quickly after ordering.

This was my first experience with Ethiopian food. We took the recommendation of the owner so that we could be a good cross section of culinary flavors. The dishes were a mixture of spice and flavors that really worked well together. Not really know what to expect, I enjoyed the flavors of everything. The owner was very concerned that we enjoyed the food, and checked on us often to make sure everything was good. He even made sure that we were eating the food correctly considering we originally asked for utensils. The atmosphere was very down to earth. And, the the owner was very welcoming. Definitely would consider eating here again.

For dinner we just stayed in and DoorDashed food. We started off ordering Beef Sambusas (Pastry shells stuffed with onions, jalapenos and Ethiopian herbs. For main course we ordered Awaze Tibs (Beef tenderloin or chikinia bits sauteed in onions and green peppers, cooked with Ethiopian butter), Yedoro Wot (chicken cooked with Ethiopian spicies, berbere sauce, onions, garlic and Ethiopian butter) and Kitfo (ground beef spiced with Awaze (Ethiopian hot sauce) and served with homemade cottage cheese, raw as well). It also came with some White Enjera and Teff Enjera to try with all the dishes. We really enjoyed the Awaze Tibs, that was great with the Enjera. The one we liked the least was Kitfo. The Yedoro Wot and Beef Sambusas were ok. Overall nice to try this cuisine but my stomach said that it is not for me.

Came here on a Saturday evening around 7 pm and got seated right away. By the time we left, every table in the front was full. Food: We got two meat combos, awaze tibs, collard greens, and split peas. The veggies were both yummy and fresh! ALL of the meat except for the tibs came out lukewarm, and the injera was cold... not room temp—cold. SUPER disappointing and totally ruined my first experience with Ethiopian food. There were different flavors for each meat in the combo, and if the food was served at the proper temperature, it would have been way more fun and enjoyable trying each one. As mentioned, only the tibs came out hot. They also seemed fresher than the meat from the combos. The flavor was really delicious and the meat was perfectly tender, so this gave me some hope that this place does have good food. Honestly, I was shocked by the subpar food quality, especially with all the great reviews. I specifially came here because it's often recommended and has a reputation as the best Ethiopian spot around. Service: The two people running the front—a man and a woman—were REALLY nice, but they were seriously understaffed, making for a pretty bad dining experience. They were taking orders, running food, probably cooking in the kitchen, and manning the store register. Two people handling front of house on a Saturday night is just crazy. I had to ask twice for water and even got up to ask for napkins. My food was dropped off, and no one checked on us afterward—they just kept rushing past, hard to flag down. After about 15-20 minutes of sitting with finished food in front of us, I had to get up to ask for the check, then waited another 5 minutes to close out. I checked several Google reviews before coming, and people often mention how great the service is, so I’m disappointed I can't say the same, especially since they were so nice. Regardless of kindness, this should not be the diner's experience when upwards $100. Atmosphere: Don't come here expecting vibes or anything fancy. It’s part restaurant, part store—more of a 'hole in the wall' experience, which I’m usually fine with if the food is good. They had a TV playing Ethiopian music videos in the restaurant area. This is a family friendly restaurant for sure, because I was seated directly next to a family with a screaming infant and toddler. The single person unisex bathroom was pretty gross and could use some maintenance and better upkeep. I hope this isn't the same bathroom staff are using since they're handling our food. Overall, I won't be back anytime soon because of the cold food and the poor service. I wouldn’t recommend it to others either. Hopefully, it was just an off night, and others have a better experience.

I'm a court ordered supervised visitation monitor. Went in here yesterday with a parent & child. They ate, I declined. My job is to document their visit. So I am on my cell phone the whole time documenting. The owner was extremely rude to me, pointed at me & said, "She is the problem," then walked away. I was in shock. I was polite and said, "No, thank you." I know he didnt know my profession, but that doesn't excuse his behavior. To the owner, thanks for being disrespectful to me in front of the family I was supervising. I would never go back to your restaurant on my own time due to your service.

Worst restaurant experience here. The worker had us waiting over an hour and 10 minutes just to see some bottles of water. We filled the meter twice in that time. When a white family came in, they were greeted so enthusiastically, given drinks immediately, and received 2-3 sample plates within minutes. After confronting him about our service, he nervously started setting napkins and water to our table after we said we were leaving. When the food finally came out, 1hour45minutes from when we sat down, it was extremely underwhelming. The last time I wrote this out, the business deleted my review. Shame on you, Awash.

Not one to make reviews but just thought I’d share my experience. Decided to pick up some Ethiopian food as my mother and I were craving it and are visiting from LA. We ordered kitfo and doro wot and by the amount of stars rewarded you can guess how it went. While the kitfo was ok the chicken from the doro wot looked as though it was thrown into the stew at the last second. Usually the flavors seep into the chicken but this was bland. On top of that it was raw, even after being microwaved on our end (we are in a hotel). Usually Iyb (cottage cheese) or some other side is served as well since spending over $50 but maybe that’s an LA thing. Nice people at the front and I’m sure it was an off day but overall disappointed. Maybe next time.

Update to yesterday's review. As We were leaving we talked with the server saying I just don't want to get sick from gluten....she laughed and said, Oh you won't get sick. Oh YES I DID! Celiacs BEWARE! Guess I should have taken the 5% Chance seriously. We came in in the afternoon and no one else was there. Ordered drinks and food. Sat nearly half an hour waiting. Finally food arrived but then she asked if we wanted drinks with the food. We reminded her of what we had ordered when we first arrived. So she did go and get them. We got the meat platter and asked her to tell us what each thing was. She just gave us the number of the items off the menu which we did not have. So we asked what each item was again. She the quickly said and went away...never to return until we went to the counter to ask for another drink. (Don't order the honey wine, it was just gross and tested of mold.) Then about 15 minutes later she brought the drinks. She was nice enough just not a a good server. Gluten free was requested and she would say well it is 95% gluten free. I said what is the 5 percent that isn't. She thought that was funny. I will revise if I get sick. Enjera was gluten free and none of the meat contained gluten, I was told. ???
