Opinions de Underbelly North Park San Diego
I’m a firm believer that people can make or break an experience, and the team here is the absolute gold standard. To be completely honest, the food wasn’t really my favorite—it didn't quite hit the mark for my personal tastes—but I am still giving this a full five stars because of the incredible staff. From the second we walked in, we felt genuinely welcomed. The workers are some of the kindest, most attentive, and friendliest people I’ve encountered in a long time. They went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and happy, and that kind of hospitality is increasingly rare. While the meal itself wasn't a standout for me, the service was world-class. If you value being treated with genuine care and a smile, this place is well worth the visit. A huge thank you to the hardworking crew.
My girlfriend and I love ramen. This a great place to it. Underbelly ramen is an awesome Tonkotsu, if you like spicy like we do, ask for fire bomb. Place has a very good location. Atmosphere is 5 stars.
Service is always very nice and quick. You're never waiting long for your food. I always get the Underbelly Ramen with an extra egg and its perfect every time. The atmosphere is great, I just wish the bar chairs were more comfortable.
Summary: Outstanding management response and follow-through. A concern was handled with honesty, speed, and genuine care—resulting in an excellent return experience. I recently had a concerning visit to Underbelly North Park and initially shared my experience in a modest three-star review. I also emailed my concerns directly to the manager, Chris. To my surprise, I received a response the very same day. Chris not only addressed the issues I raised, but also pointed out additional concerns he noticed in the photos I shared. The timeliness of his response, combined with his honesty and willingness to critique the dish himself, spoke volumes about how he runs his business and the kind of person he is. He invited my wife and me back to Underbelly and asked for the opportunity to make things right—and he truly went above and beyond. The food, service, and atmosphere were all incredible. It genuinely means a lot to see a business take customer feedback seriously, rather than brushing it off, and make a sincere effort to correct the experience. Underbelly North Park absolutely did that. Thank you Chris and staff of Underbelly North Park!
Luis was awesome to us. Helped my wife order (she has a very difficult allergy). He knows the ingredients for almost every dish. Amazing service. Ramen was most excellent, as always
My first time to this spot. Pretty affordable for a party of 2 drinking only water, 2 Ranen bowl & a side of kimchi. Ramen was plentiful & delicious, you can easily SHARE a bowl. Cozy atmosphere w a nice fire at most tables. Beware the sauce that looks like p-nut sauce is actually SPICY.
As you know, parking is always tricky in North Park but there is plenty of parking available in the neighborhood. The service was so quick. We got water and as we turned around our food was already delivered to our table. They have self serve water (plain and sparkling) outside. I love how spacious outdoor/bar seating is on the patio. The music was great. A great vibe overall. I definitely recommend giving this place a try if you're in the area and craving some bomb ramen! Food review: Underbelly ramen: (5/5) The noodles, meat, and broth were all perfection in this bowl of ramen! It was a good portion and the meat was SO tender and delicious! Tonkotsu ramen: (5/5) The noodles were cooked perfectly, pork was tender and flavorful, the soft boiled egg is always my favorite part, and the broth is delicious, I could just drink bowls of it. It's not super heavy and has so much flavor. Beef gyoza: (4/5) These were tasty, but there was not as much filling/meat inside as we like. Short rib bao: (3.5/5) The meat was very tender, but the coleslaw and spicy mustard didn't mesh well together in my opinion. I ate the meat, pickle, and bun and it was delicious. It comes with 2 buns, so plenty to share!
Came on a Saturday night around 8:30. Street parking is limited, but we eventually found a spot. There was no wait when we arrived. The restaurant is counter service and self-seating. After placing our order, we found a spot at the fire pit table, which was a nice touch since it was chilly out. Our food arrived within 10 min. The Japanese Corn Dogs were small but satisfying, just lightly battered for crunch. The Belly of the Beast Ramen was outstanding. The Hoisin Glazed Short Rib was tender and well seasoned. The Oxtail Dumplings were mouthwatering. Had I known that it could be ordered as an extra topping, I definitely would have added more. The egg was soft-boiled perfection. Overall, nice balanced umami flavor. Will definitely be back!! One note: I didn’t deduct any stars because I didn’t want to take away from my overall satisfaction with food and service, but I do have to mention that the music played was awful. Maybe they were going for a certain vibe, but it was explicit and unpleasant.
I definitely get the hype for this ramen because it was delicious. I ordered the Chicken Confit Ramen and my husband ordered the Belly of the Beast Ramen. Both were so good. The chicken was so tender and basically shredded the more I mixed the reamen. Also the short-ribs and the oxtail dumplings had such great flavor. Some of the best broth we have had. It was so creamy and not separated and watered down, it was perfect. We also had the beef gyoza and spicy garlic Edamame, both great. I love the vibe here too. You walk in and order right away then it is open family type seating. It was nice talking with others at the table we shared with. Service was fast and they made sure to check up on us incase we needed anything more. We will definitely be back. I recommend this place.
Hands down THE best ramen I've had in SD, I liked it better than Menya or Nishiki. The reason I'm giving it 4 stars is the poor lighting in the bathroom
It’s a nice place to hangout I just hope they can offer more convenient form of ordering for take out. You need to order and pay before getting seated which is fine but I hope the tip comes after service so people knows how much to give. Food is good and price is reasonable. Other than the ordering and tipping process this place is a must try! ❌Online order ❌Ordering Process ✔️Free Parking ✔️Convenient Operating Hours ✔️Convenient Form of Payment ✔️Cozy Place to hangout
Strictly speaking about the Ramen. Oh man I'm addicted to this place. The ramen is soooo delicious. Ramen can vary from place to place. However this specific place I really enjoy the texture of the noodles. The broth is excellent & they give you some pretty awesome add on choices for obviously an extra price but worth it.
The atmosphere was causal and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about all the dishes. Service was quick and efficient. The tables were very comfortable with plenty of room to spread out. We got a little bit of everything and enjoyed all of it. I would maybe go back again. Not really my style of food and parking is challenging. They do have items to fit most people's tastes. The cocktail's were beautiful and creative. The ice in my drink made it hard to drink. It was like hail. Very tasty though.
We tried two ramens one pork broth and one market veggie and both were okay, nothing to write home about. The veggie ramen could use a lot more flavor it’s very much a water broth, it was lackluster if it wasn’t for the rain ramen probably wouldn’t have been our first pick. We had a cucumber salad that was fairly bland also little to no sauce not dressing. The spicy edamame was okay. Service was better than the food.
I like the vibe of the place but the ramen was underwhelming. The broths were not flavorful (maybe with salt and black pepper) and I felt some of the toppings could have been cooked through more. The gluten free noodles were good though. Kind of expensive pours of beer. Would rather go to a different ramen place next time.
Somewhat medicare food with tepid staff. Strangely, not very good. The sausages are delicious! The ramen almost tastes like instant ramen- just not great. The staff seemed put out when asked for anything, like every patron is a bother to them. The food was mostly fresh, just not great.
I brought a friend here for her birthday because I came here a few years back and it was good. Well it wasn't good this time. Food was disappointing. The ramen has an overpowering smokey flavor (not a compliment)and it was so greasy. The noodles felt slimy and greasy. We also ordered chicken wings. The chicken wasn't cooked enough, should have been crispier. We were having to bite through the soft rubbery chicken skin. The staff was nice and checked on us often. The Ube margarita was good. I was disappointed that her birthday dinner wasn't better. We should have went to Tajima Ramen it is way better IMO.
Ordered the short rib bun which admittedly was one of the better buns I’ve tried recently. The farmers market ramen lacked layered flavors resulting in a forgettable end product. The kimchi was alright and the chicken confit ramen was decent but not desirable. The atmosphere and service were great but overall I found the establishment unremarkable.
We sat at the bar expecting to have a couple of drinks, but the service completely missed the mark. Our food arrived before the kombucha we ordered, and the bartender never checked in, even when my drink was clearly empty. The frustrating part is that the food here is consistently excellent every time I’ve eaten here, which makes the lack of basic bar service even more disappointing. Great kitchen, absolutely terrible service on this visit.
This place used to be way better. Ordered takeout and got the tiger curry ramen. Portion was WAY smaller! They only give you half an egg now. Paid an extra $1 for half extra egg. Only two shrimp! I can get two meals off hot pot takeout. Lesson learned. Will not be going back.
Great environment but the staff here definitely need some help with preserving taste. This was the worst ramen I've ever tasted , and the after taste I'm experiencing is definitely evident of the cross contamination taking place between cleaning agents and food preparation. The cook is cleaning as he goes which is great-- HOWEVER, not once did he change his gloves— again, I can LITERALLY taste the cross contamination of whatever cleaning solution or santizer that they use. Also the meat in the belly of the beast ramen tasted I had tasted spoiled as if it hadn't been rotated out. One star because the lingering disgusting aftertaste is and the manager not seeming to care. I literally told her and she said, “I’ve ever heard that before.” CRAZY WORK. Do not waste your money here.
Underbelly used to be so good. Just went recent and I noticed that they are now being stingy with portion sizes and protein amount. We ordered the belly of the beast ramen and it only came with 2 small pieces or pork belly 2 dumplings and half and egg. Prices increased but you’re getting less. Do better. Also, tipping before service makes no sense because outside of them bringing you the food they offer nothing else. Not even bringing water.
