Dinner started with the bread service, which was fantastic. I could have eaten a tub of their homemade butter if they would have let me. So good. We were having an early dinner before a show so we ate a little lighter. My wife had the crab cake appetizer as a meal, which she liked. Not the best crab cake we’ve ever had but definitely not the worst. I had the sea bass and it was quite good. Very tender and flaky. I gave the “atmosphere” 5-stars because the restaurant is beautiful but my only complaint is that with the open window seating, there was a man dancing around on the sidewalk talking to people trying to eat. He didn’t talk to us, but it was a little jarring. Overall a really nice meal.
We had a good experience here: our server was attentive and knowledgeable about the entire menu. All of our dishes were delicious. The Chilean sea bass came in a rich sauce, but it was cooked perfectly—tender, flavorful, and beautifully presented.
The rolls were awesome and the spiny lobster were in season so we lucked out on those!! Salmon sushi for the starter topped off one of the best coastal meals I’ve ever had.

Wow, what a meal! The rolls were phenomenal—fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. We were lucky enough to catch the spiny lobster in season, and it did not disappoint—so sweet and perfectly cooked. To kick things off, the salmon sushi was light, fresh, and just the perfect starter. Honestly, it felt like one of the best coastal meals I’ve had in a long time. The flavors were spot-on, and everything felt carefully prepared. The combination of fresh sushi, seasonal seafood, and thoughtful presentation made it such a standout dining experience. Definitely a place to go if you love seafood, sushi, or just a top-notch coastal meal. Can’t wait to come back and get another round of those amazing rolls and lobster—it was that good!
Water Grill San Diego exceeded expectations, and Marilia made the experience truly exceptional. She was by far one of the best servers I’ve had at any restaurant—attentive without being intrusive, incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, and genuinely warm and welcoming. Her recommendations were spot-on, timing was perfect, and she made us feel like valued guests from start to finish. Outstanding service like this is rare, and it elevated an already fantastic meal. We’ll definitely be back, and we’ll be asking for Marilia, and you should too!
We had an absolutely fantastic meal at Water Grill, and I can’t recommend it enough. The ambiance is beautiful, calm, and high end, the kind of place where you instantly relax and enjoy being present. We started with the mussels, and they were outstanding. The variety of sauces was next-level and each one felt thoughtfully paired and incredibly flavorful. I had the Caesar salad, and the anchovies were phenomenal. Truly some of the best I’ve ever had. My husband ordered a fish dish, and it was cooked perfectly. Fresh, flavorful, and exactly what you hope for from a restaurant like this. What really sealed it for me, though, was the service. We were in town for a conference, and I accidentally left behind my prescription sunglasses. The staff went above and beyond to make sure I got them back. These were expensive sunglasses and their care and follow-through meant everything. Great food, beautiful space, and people who genuinely care.
Water Grill delivered a wonderful dining experience from start to finish. We were greeted by warm hosts and seated promptly, which set the tone for a great evening. Bob deserves a special shoutout for being an exceptional host. He spent time with us answering our questions, explaining ingredients (like the difference between spiny lobster and Maine lobster), and helped us make great choices for our dinner. He never once made us feel rushed, always attentive, always kind, and truly made us feel at home. The meal began with their homemade bread and butter, which was easily the best complimentary bread and butter we’ve ever had, so good that we asked for more, even though the initial portion was already generous for two. We ordered: Calamari with mint maploy sauce, pepper, and aioli Spiny lobster served with coleslaw and melted butter Lobster( served with Maine lobster ( tail and claw meat) roll on a brioche bun with butter dressing, served with fries Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. We ended the meal with the key lime pie. The filling was enjoyable, though we felt the oatmeal crust could have been even better with something like a graham cracker crust. It was also wonderful to see how cheerful and attentive the entire staff was across the dining room, lots of smiles, positive energy, and never a dull moment. Overall, a fantastic experience, elevated even further by Bob’s outstanding hospitality. We would absolutely return
First time at this downtown San Diego landmark. I booked a reservation & the service from the entire staff was excellent. The Water Grill, I would call this a classic seafood restaurant. The selection of seafood, steaks, wine & cocktails was amazing. After dinner, a staff member brought out this huge, 12 + lbs - live - Alaskan King Crab. He said “I thought you might enjoy this, we just got it in from Alaska a few minutes ago.”
Run here...don't walk! We dined at Water Grill for NYE this past week and it was such a great NYE. Firstly, the staff at the restaurant are amazing to work with as we had to change our reservation time and they easily accommodated us. Also, I appreciate because it was a pre-fixe menu, they confirmed the details prior to the date. When we got there, the restaurant was decorated beautifully (both upstairs and downstairs). Our table was roomy and comfortable. The staff all work together like a well oiled machine. Now for the good part! Jenna was our server and she was nothing short of fantastic and an absolutely valuable gem! She was so nice and helpful, she took such pride in her job and the entire restaurant. Since it was our first time there she told us about the history of the restaurant and we appreciated that. It was a 4 course menu and each course offered really great options that were sincerely hard to choose from. My husband and I started with the shrimp cocktail. The shrimp was excellently steamed and according to Jenna, the cocktail sauce is made in house with hand grated fresh horseradish root and fresh herbs. It was exquisite! For the second course I had a fresh greens salad that was so flavorful with a lovely light viniagrette. Hubby had the clam chowder that came with fresh succulent clams in the shell and a light creamy broth was not super thick. Third course was surf and turf and it was the perfect size! Not too generous to be wasted and not to small to be lacking in what we wanted. The turf was served with an inhouse made chimichurri that was SOOO good! I am still dreaming of that sauce. The last course was dessert and we chose to split ours (with the offer to box up the extra one - but we didn't want that as we were heading back to Arizona the next morning). We ordered the cheesecake with strawberry sauce. It was the lightest cheesecake I ever had. But the best was our server Jenna! She made the evening so wonderful! Can't wait to go back!
Every visit here is a wonderful experience thanks to the consistently great food and attentive service. The restaurant has a beautiful and inviting atmosphere, and the second floor adds a nice touch to the overall vibe. Their oysters are absolutely delicious and always feel fresh. Being located downtown, parking can be a bit challenging, but the quality of the experience more than makes up for it. Highly recommended.
First time at this location, and loved it! Our waiter was so, so sweet and attentive - my waitress sister was very impressed. We enjoyed delish WA oysters and various seafood plates. Everything was beautifully presented and served. Expensive & yummy options on the menu, but more cost-effective options as well. Great place to take loved ones or a date if you like a selection of oysters, fish, prime/wagyu steak, good drinks. Limited parking outside, expect to pay a hefty parking lot fee. Beautiful location, and definitely worth the trip.

10 out of 10 - highly recommended! We went for dinner on a Friday night. We arrived early and had a few drinks at the bar. I love a French martini but most bartenders don’t know what it is - but this bartender did and made it perfectly. We made our way to the table. The complementary bread was delicious. We ordered the clam chowder, which was the tastiest we have ever had! It’s a must try!! We also had sea scallops and Chilean sea bass. Both perfectly cooked and tasted amazing. Service was excellent too. We were very impressed and will be back.again.
Excellent service , the Mac and cheese was awesome,the taco fish was ok ,the tortilla was stale more like a tostada but the fish was good it can be improved . Like the drinks we order rose wind and a bloody Mary.
Walked in just around closing time and the place was quiet by 10 pm on a Sat night. I think most of the people were partying outside after Padres had just pulled off a win! We were seated in a very comfortable booth seating - and the hostess was thoughtful enough to do so after she saw that our little one was sleeping when we entered the restaurant. Jen - was our waitress and was quick to get our order which included Jumbo Lump Crab Cake ($25), and Wild Local Bluefin Tune ($46) entree. Prices were slightly on the expensive end, but the experience and ambiance felt pretty upscale. We had a pleasant evening - very chill vibes, dim-lit, jazzy music in the background, and pleasant SD weather! Great experience overall.
Exceptional raw bar! I was here for dinner with a group of people and it was so excellent. We came back the next day with another group. The raw bar is outstanding. I’m a big fan of oysters in this place with some of the best I’ve ever had. The sushi was amazing! I will visit this every time I’m in San Diego from here on out.
I must admit I was skeptical about it at first. In town for a tradeshow and this was where we decided to eat dinner. From the ambiance, the rolls (to die for), and the great service 👍 all the way. You can get a meal for $30 ish or go big with the crab at $97/lb. Highly recommend this restaurant. Appropriate for business dinner or a date night with @healingground.online
The food and atmosphere were fantastic. I had the halibut and brussels sprouts, and we also ordered mac and cheese along with a couple of other dishes. We ended up with so much food that we had to take some home. We ordered three sides, which was probably too much for the four of us, as we couldn’t eat it all. The service was excellent, and the drinks were great, too. I would definitely go back when I visit San Diego again.
Absolutely an amazing experience. We arrived early for a reservation and sat at the oyster bar where we met Chris shucking oysters. He introduced us to a variety of oysters and scallops and after enjoying a dozen and a couple samplers we moved on to our table. Our table was along the edge with the open windows to the outside hustle and bustle of downtown gas lamp, San Diego. We had the Columbia River salmon which was the best we've ever had.
Excellent seafood restaurant with a great ambiance. Whole fish, great raw bar, lobster roll, sushi, etc. everything you'd want from a nice seafood place, and the menu is updated daily. Definitely give the Spanish octopus appetizer a try. I've been here many times over the years living downtown and everything is always perfect. I enjoy their large windows being open during the day; it's made for some pleasant lunches enjoying the weather and people watching. The service is always great. Highly recommend.

The setting was great for date night. The service was very attentive. We had amazing Sea Bass! The windows were open and allowed a great breeze.
One of the great pleasures is to sit at the bar, chat with the bartenders and eat oysters, bread and chowder. Never ever a disappointment. We will keep coming back!
We had previously eaten at the location in Vegas and we were easily able to make a last minute reservation for a late Friday lunch. Place was somewhat busy, it is a very big restaurant with 2 levels and there is plenty of fish on the menu. The sushi rolls were excellent as was the Chilean Seabass. Cheesecake was just ok. Cocktails and wine were all good. Service was not consistent, slow in some parts, but very friendly.
Giving 3 stars for food since food wise felt they could have done bit more.. Octopus or the calamari were tiny bit over done.. they were 25% rubbery.. steamed red king crabs were well done. We enjoyed them. Totally recommend this for anyone looking to have hot steamed crabs option. Fyi, they also have chilled crabs option on menu as wel. Totally recommend this place. It could be timing issue to what we experienced with appetizers. May be it’s better for some others.
We were a group of eight. It was six adults and two kids. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The place was immaculate. It was definitely one of the nicest we saw downtown. We really wanted to love it, but the food was not as amazing as the atmosphere and the staff. Our appetizer was fried squid, but it came out a little cold. I was hoping since they were slow everything was going to come out hot. We got the macaroni and cheese for the kids and they loved it. I am not someone who's very fond of mac and cheese, but I even enjoyed it. I ordered the tuna and they had so many spices around the edge that it felt like you were burning your pallet. They told me it was spicy, but it wasn't. It was just too much of something. If it wasn't for that imbalance I think it would have been great. The others ordered an assortment of sushi (fine), salad (well done), and salmon (again, fine), but I guess we just expected to be wowed for the price and it just wasn't that.
Great restaurant and cool place to have drinks for sure! We started with margaritas on the rocks and ahi poke,( drinks 9 poke 10).. delicious with the chips can't go wrong.... The bread and butter.... (10).... for the main course we shared a Filet and lobster.... The filet cooked medium to the wife's liking came out medium rare and that was disappointing. (Steak 6). As for the lobster it was good but not $100 good..( lobster 6). Did I go wrong ordering a steak at a restaurant that specializes in seafood.... idk.... the sides were mashed potatoes (7) and mac n cheese however the mac never made it to the table? I can tell you that I wouldn't go back if I wanted a good steak especially with a bill over $300 and we shared the main course. The search continues for the best in San Diego!

Water Grill has a sweet place in my heart since it was one of the first places I went to with my husband when we started dating. We decided to come here for New Year's eve and picked the prefixed menu which was a 4-course meal for $150/person. The atmosphere is always nice here, it was decorated for the Holidays and 2026 balloons. Our waitress was exceptional, she checked on us often and I appreciated that. The forst course I picked the shrimp cocktail and my husband chose the crab cakes. The crab cakes were okay, we enjoyed the pickled vegetables more than the cakes. The shrimp cocktail was an interesting consistency almost as if they had been overcooked. Wouldn't recommend either of these dishes. Second course was clam chowder and caesar salad. The chowder had carrots in it which was interesting. The bacon in the soup was extremely fatty and not crisp enough, I ended up picking these out. The salad contained old romaine lettuce that was brown so my husband didnt eat it. This was unfortunate because he was excited about the anchovies on the salad. For entrees we picked the surf and turf which was filet mignon and South African lobster 🦞 This was a good dish, the lobster was sweeter than others and was delicious. The filet was good, not great but a good steak. I chose the grilled spiny lobster which I enjoyed. It only came with a small side of coleslaw but the slaw was yummy 😋 For the 4th and final course we chose the cheesecake and the bread pudding. The cheesecake was okay and the bread pudding was good. I was so full we had to bring dessert home. They gave us each a thoughtful New Years card to write to open on 12/31/2026 for our dreams and wishes, I loved this! Overall for the meal costing $515 after tip, we didn't feel as though the cost met the value. I left wishing I had spent my money elsewhere for the cost.
Location: 10/10 !! Great atmosphere, cozy, and most of all, in the heart of the Gaslamp district (very central). I personally love the details on the forniture. Menu: 7 Fish restaurant. The options on the menu are just right, from raw fish to the classic fish&chips. I was expecting more traditional dishes. The portions are okey, and the food tasty. I recommend the calamari, delicious! Service: 4 We did not have a great experience. We did order both starters and mains (asking to bring the mains on a second wave). Not only they delivered the main while we were still eating, but, to create some space, they also removed all the plates while we were still eating, without asking. Also, we had to wait quite a while to order, even tho the restaurant was almost empty and there were many waitress available (the two girl at the door were chatting about private matters). I believe, our waiter, understood the situation after a while, as he did try to recover (which I really do appreciate!!). He’s been very kind and offered us a dessert to share, I guess to apologise about what happened during the lunch. Bill: 6/10 A bit expensive considering California standards (and also the service received).
