Opinions de Zhang Liang Malatang San Diego
I’ve been coming here since their grand opening. The soups were a bit salty at first, but they took feedback seriously and improved them a lot. My favorites are the classic bone soup, mala soup, and the dry option with sesame sauce. I’m not a big fan of the stir-fried dishes since they’re still a little salty for my taste, even when eaten with rice. Ingredients are fresh and restocked throughout the day, and the shop is clean and hygienic. The only issue is the wait time, 45 minutes to an hour during peak hours. Off hours are much better (about 5–10 minutes). I’ve tried many similar places in SD, and this is my most favorite.
My favorite malatang spot in SD. I love the variety they have, their bases, and sauces. The price is also right with only a .7lb minimum. It's a comparatively small spot, so it can be crowded and a long wait during peak times. Service is quick and efficient.
Just the two of us came to eat, we ordered a medium-spicy bone broth and a stir-fried spicy pot. Both were super tasty and the ingredients were really fresh. They’ve got four other flavors too, including non-spicy and veggie options. Definitely worth giving it a try!
Update review - I brought my baby back to Zhangliang Malatang, it’s his 2nd time in this location, and it’s pretty baby friendly, with high chair provided. My girl friend never tried the dry style Malatang, so she wants to try and I went together with her. That style is always my favorite. And she’s really happy about it and I like mine as well. The service is good even though my baby made a little mess in his high chair with his snacks. There are a lot of items that you can choose from, my fav are beef tongue, fatty beef and quail eggs. You should totally try this if you like hotpot. Previous review - I’m so happy to see the super popular Chinese malatang brand Zhangliang opened a chain in San Diego! I haven’t got a chance to have that in China yet. My good friend and I went to try on a Wednesday night and it was very packed, people need to wait for seats after 6:30pm. The store is very clean and organized, they have more food items than I expected. And the taste is really awesome! I chose a dry Malatang and my friend ordered the spicy pork bone original. Both are great, we are very happy with it. My dry style is sweet and sour, it was very yummy, the price is very reasonable. The dipping sauce table has a lot of flavor which is also great.
One of the best spots for a quick bowl of soup. The meat and veggie options are exactly what I like. They also have seafood options if you want to add it to your bowl. I got the spicy bone broth with beef, lamb, and a lot of veggies. Service was quick, friendly, and professional. The tables and food area were kept very clean. Definitely coming back to this spot.
My go to spot for Chinese style Malatang/mini hotpot. Zhangliang is a well known brand and I love this newly open one in San Diego. The ingredients are fresh, the soup is savory. The owner also listens to customers feedbacks. The first time we dined there, we had some of the ingredients that would taste even better if only they are cooked a little longer. We told the owner, and next time we visited, they actually changed the time cook for these ingredients. I highly recommend the dry pot and the classic soup base. 👌
This place is clean. What I love most is the variety of options for vegetables and meats. You can choose what you want based on your appetite for the day. The staff is nice and friendly, answering all my questions patiently. I ordered the bone soup and added ground garlic and fresh pepper from the sauce station to enhance the flavors since I love everything with garlic. It was so delicious! I will definitely go back again.
The food was absolutely amazing! I went for the spicy hot pot, and you get to pick your own ingredients—everything looked super fresh and tasty. Perfect spot for anyone who loves a bit of heat. The service was top-notch too; they even asked how spicy I wanted it and kept my water topped up without me asking. Since it wasn’t too busy, the vibe was really chill and comfy.
Good food with lots of items to choose from for malatang. I think you have to add $2 for the dry pot, which is really good, but it’s pricey and the rice portion is small. They’re super busy during lunchtime.
This is one tasty broth. Saw some middling reviews and got spooked, but it’s just such a good vibe. I love hotpot (AYCE included, of course), and this place delivers. Prices are fine—not a steal but not breaking the bank. For $20–$30, you can get very satisfyingly full; AYCE pushes that to $40+, so it’s still a good value. I’d say what makes it better than AYCE beyond the cost is the quality of the ingredients—meat feels much nicer and so do the veggies, plus there’s a decent selection. Plus, they really shocked me with how well they cooked everything; only the noodles tended to overcook a bit by the end. I’ll definitely come back. Anyways, def check it out and give this place some love. It’s fun
One of the best Malatang spots I’ve tried! Tons of fresh ingredients to choose from, flavorful spicy broth, and a great sauce bar. Super clean, fast service, and perfect for a quick, satisfying meal. Highly recommend!
I came here on their opening day. At first, I was planning to eat at Sizzling Pot King, but then I saw this new spot had just opened. Their dry pot is seriously good. You have to try the squid and prime beef -- super fresh, and the sauce-based broth ties everything together perfectly. There's usually a line every time I come, but it's worth the wait. The service is also great -- never feels overwhelming or pushy at all.

The chairs are very comfy and the food was great! The wait time wasnt long at about 7pm for a group of 6. They weigh the ingredients you select for your bowl so your price will change but its 13.99 per pound.
First time here, great experience. So satisfied with the food that I forgot to take pictures. I recommend the classic bone broth. The environment here is clean and tidy, the ingredients are very fresh, and the staff are very efficient.
I’m so glad I found this place! The broth is flavorful, rich, and authentic — just like the Zhangliang Malatang I used to have back in China. The ingredient selection is fresh and well-organized, and the portion sizes are very generous. You can customize everything to your own taste, which is perfect whether you like mild, spicy, or extra spicy. The staff here are friendly and the restaurant is clean and comfortable. The ordering process is easy, and the food comes out fast. This spot has definitely become one of my favorite places for a satisfying meal. Highly recommend to anyone who loves malatang or just wants something warm and delicious!
I had a great experience at Zhangliang Malatang. The DIY concept is fun and convenient, with a wide variety of fresh ingredients to choose from. Everything tasted clean and flavorful, and you can really customize the meal to your own preferences. I’ll definitely be coming back again.

01-14-2026 I keep returning to this place (last visit, 01/03/26); it’s my favorite DIY hot pot. I recommend it to my friends and relatives. Each time I write a review, they deserve 5 star rating. However today’s visit, 4 star was adequate; they swapped beef ball to a different brand- texture was soft and lacking taste. I prefer the previous ones, firm and tasty! 11-16-2025 Every time I meet up with friends (who have not been here before) for lunch, I choose this place. All my friends enjoy the food here after they had tasted. The day we met up, it was cold and wet. Perfect day for delicious soup! Highly recommended. 10-15-25 Yep, back again two consecutive weeks! I really like this place and definitely enjoyed my soup this week as much as last. Everything was perfectly cooked! Liked the fact that they didn't ask me to go back and add more food in my bowl; it only weighed 0.82 lb : ) 10-07-2025 I’ve always enjoyed my experience here especially this time around; everything was perfect cooked to be more specific scallops, tongue and intestine. Note: They are now charging soup base $1 to $3 depending on what you choose. 08-06-2025 I can’t get enough of this place. Back again, this time with one of my besties. She loved it; said she will bring her daughters and siblings here. Lol 06-27-2025 We liked this place so much and came back again 6 days later with my son. Classic Spicy Bone broth was everyone’s fav. The same as the last visit, the food here was so good that you will want to return for more every chance you get. Happy dining y’all! 06-21-25 Yummy delicious food, cordial staff, fast service, soft seatings, durable bowls & spoons, and no hassle with parking. Ordered: -Original Bone Broth $16.09 -Spicy Dry Pot $13.71, plus $3 I enjoyed my experience here. Can’t wait to tell my friends about this establishment.
Was craving this since I left Singapore. The photo on the right is take away at a Zhangliang overseas and the pic on the left is the one on convoy. Great same flavor and great same price! My 1 tiny issue is the added potato slices. I don't like the texture.
Food was amazing. A lot of options but the wait was pretty long. Service was pretty good too but wish everything was a little bit more clean. Overall good malatang place!

Very nice tasty Ramen. I didn’t enjoy the shrimp as much. The customer service was very nice and helpful. They were very helpful with things I end up getting the sweet and spicy sauce finish. It was good. I will go again.
Food was fresh and made to order, and the service was on point. The vibe? Chill and clean — you can tell they take pride in their space. If you're into hot pot soups, this is a solid choice. Now here’s the breakdown: The broth was good — just not great. Something was missing flavor-wise. It didn’t quite soak into the ingredients, so some bites came off a bit bland. I even brought home a good amount of broth — it just didn’t have that punch. Also, I chose the mild heat level, but it barely registered as spicy. The broth stayed yellow, and I was expecting that signature red hue you see at other places. If you know the other well-known spot that does this, you'll get what I mean. On the flip side: The stir fry? Fire. Bold flavor, well-balanced, and definitely the standout. If you're not sure what to get, I’d say lean toward the stir fry on your first visit. Will I be back? Absolutely. This isn’t a one-and-done. It’s worth revisiting, especially to see if they level up that broth. I'd give it a 4.5/5 — just shy of perfect because of that flavor gap.
Delicious! My family & I are avid YingTang people but we decided to try Zhangliang and it was really good! The ingredients were fresh and the selection was really clean. Their dry pot is definitely a good deal, they add a bunch of stuff too to bulk it out. It did give me a stomach ache, maybe one of the ingredients went bad, so i probably won’t come back. Wait was also quite long because the restaurant is pretty small, i would only come with one other person.

I’ve eaten at this restaurant many times and usually they do a pretty good job. Unfortunately, this time I found a bug in my mala tang, which was very disappointing. I hope the restaurant can pay more attention to cleanliness of their kitchen in the future. I still hope they can improve, because my past experiences were generally good.
