Really good dumplings. The sweet and sour pork was not too exciting.

I love this place. It has some great dumplings, some overly greasy other foods, which is to be expected, and some good soups and noodles. This is one of my favorites in the city. I recently took a trip down to LA where I visited Din Tai Fung - one of the best and most famous dumpling places in the world. Yes, it was good, but I no longer felt it was super special because I had been eating here and at Koi Palace! This place might not be better, but I would say that it comes only a short distance behind. Service is slow, but expected because they're probably cooked to order.

Delicious! We ordered steamed dumplings, spicy wontons in hot oil, bok choy, and sweet and sour spare ribs were all excellent!!! Bring cash.

Hand down the best Shanghai cuisine in the city. You can find a lot of the things you can't find elsewhere: savory soy milk, "vegetarian goose," knife cut noodles, etc. And yes, the XLB are great. The service can be excruciatingly slow, but the food is worth it.

Great authentic chinese food. Service a little slow as the fromt lady seemed to be very tired. Understandable, since the food was amazing. Will try to go back for more dumpling and chicken wings 😋

Casual, down-to-earth, homey food that'll leave you feeling incredibly satisfied for the low price you'll pay. Must-haves include the dried fried chicken wings and the xiao long bao. The dried fried chicken wings are better than the ones at San Tung in my opinion because here at Shanghai House, the skin has a really good crunch which is a nice contrast to the thick, generous layer of sweet chili sauce. The xiao long bao has great broth inside and a thin but chewy wrapping which won't break apart on you too easily. Overall, highly recommend this place.

Great place for homemade dumplings. Their dumplings and fried chicken are top notch. Service takes a while, but worth the wait.

The lady owner is very friendly and hard working. All the baos and wontons are homemade handmade, if you want to try authentic Chinese food, with a affordable price, this is the price. Chicken wings are quite big than all the other places I been to, even some famous lined up restaurant is no better than here. Just look at the pictures, this is a MUST TRY PLACE!

food comes out quickly & hot. Have gotten sheng jian bao a couple times & the meat held together a lot better the second time we came. loved the chicken wings too. cash only but there are plenty of atms on the street

I’m almost unwilling to write a good review of this place out of fear that they’ll get really popular and I won’t be able to get a table anymore. That being said, though, this place is legitimately delicious. Dumplings for days.

Very authentic dishes. Sheng Jian Bao is so good, you definitely need to try it! And wings, better than all other places I went. I ordered take out, sheng Jian Bao still so good even I reheat it after I got home in 20mins. So glad they survived the pandemic. We definitely will be back!

The extremely uncommon, at least on San Francisco dumpling menus, Sheng Jian Bao or pan fried Shanghai dumpling, is a must try. A cross between a soup dumpling and a potsticker, they are have a wonder flavor and great textual contrast between chewy wrapper, crispy wrapper, and a moist pork filling.

Amazing food - had the dumplings and tan tan noodles. Will definitely make this a regular. If you’re after great service this place may not be for you (personally I think the hostess just needs to warm to you after she sees you enjoying the amazing food!), but if you’re after being served amazing food then highly recommend!

Shanghai House has amazing food that I actually think is better than Shanghai Dumpling King just a few blocks away. However, the service here is poor and slow. Be prepared to wait a while for your food unless you are the only one in there. The chicken wings here are incredible.

R

The service was slow and it's pretty clear that they've outgrown their current location and staff, but man was the food good. I had the vegetarian goose and the Xiao Long Bao and both were incredible. People rave about the XLB here, but I actually liked the goose more. The chefs managed to have so many textures and flavors in a simple tofu and mushroom dish. If I came back here again, I would also try the fried dumplings, and the tea smoked duck. Both looked really appetizing, between the dumplings' chili oil base and texture, and the duck's tenderness- practically falling off the bone, and I saw people going back for more.

Had a great meal tonight. Our favorites of Xiao Long Bao, clay pot rice, dried fried chicken wings and Shanghai Meatballs were delicious! Love the crispy edges of the rice and they have the best XL bao in town. (Google had it mislabeled as Temporarily Closed. )

Very good cooking and great comfort food Chinese cooking. Somewhat ordinary and deceptively plain decor though, but the locals fill the seats. I love best their pan fried dumplings and dry chicken.

A hole in the wall family owned restaurant in the Richmond District. We LOVE the owners to death as she and her husband are just so wonderful! We've been coming here for quite some time and last few times we visited, their kids were there to help out - how cute is that! Their Shanghai dumplings are a must as it's made fresh every day unlike other places that are pre-made then frozen or it just sits in the steamer all day. We're also a huge fan of their pig knuckle, combo noodle soup, onion pancake, spicy fried chicken and rice cake stir fries. The list really goes on and on as they really have some awesome food! In addition, alot of their items are extremely healthy and light so you never feel like you just digested a pound of lard with all that oil and grease that other similar places might cook their food in. One thing that must be pointed out though.. the place is extremely small (hence the hole in the wall concept) and because it's family owned and operated, the food can come slow as the wife handles the dining area while the hubby does all the cooking. They have 2 helpers that helps in the kitchen but there's only like 2-3 stove tops (you can see this every time you need to go upstairs to their restroom) but in all honesty, the wait is totally worth it in the end!

Saturday 11/25/23 Lunch at Shanghai House in San Francisco with my cousin, niece, and nephew. Delicious Shanghai foods; pand fried dumplings, dry chicken wings, satay beef clay pot, and shedded beef & Napa. David Young Restaurant Enthusiast

Their dry fried chicken wings is really good and comparable to Santung. I would come back exclusively for this. Their dumplings are ok, not as good as Shanghai Dumpling House. And their green onion pancake is a miss, dense and not fluffy.

W
William Cheng

Excellent xiao long bao, good green scallion pancakes, mediocre string beans (no sear on them at all), and terrible tan tan noodles (more like a soup, oddly with shrimp). The fried spicy wings are good as well, but by far the unhealthiest dish there.

This place has good food as far as dumplings houses in the city go. Keep in mind, you are not coming for the service... Be prepared to be attended on their terms and asking a few times for water :p Panfried dumplings are excellent!

TLDR: Best xiao long bao in the city, everything else sucks. Best xiao long bao (shanghainese soup dumplings) in the Sunset/Richmond area, and probably best in the city. I know because my recent crazy obsession over XLBs prompted me to hunt them down and try them everywhere I can find. Unfortunately, everything else at Shanghai House is lackluster in comparison to other chinese restaurants. Most dishes comes with an unnecessary half plate of oil. -Dry fried chicken wings were okay, nice try (so hard) drenched in too much sugary glaze goo; I prefer San Tung's better dried wings -Jellyfish, don't get it here if you're typically a fan; this is supposed to be a cold refreshing appetizer but the one here is weirdly warm and also super greasy -Spicy combination beef (fu qi fei pian) isn't spicy or flavorful enough -Hand-pulled noodles, generically bland huge pile of carbs Cash only. Nothing else besides the XLB was memorable except the owner lady (I think) behind the counter looks intimidating and reminds me of the Landlady of Pig Sty Alley from Kung Fu Hustle.

This is a Mom and Pop family restaurant between 37th & 38th on Geary Blvd in the Avenues. Very basic 10 tables & 36 wooden chairs. Many regular customers for eating in & take out so usually very busy! They are popular for their dry spicy wings dish and steamed dumplings! Cash only!

This place is completely underrated. I'm not sure why people consistently choose to go to Shanghai Dumpling King or San Tung when Shanghai House exists. My favorites are the XLB and the Dried Chicken Wings. They rival San Tung for sure, without the wait! The XLB isn't quite up to Din Tai Fung status, but it's pretty good. The exterior is a *bit* too thick but not awfully so. The service is decent and the decor is non-existent. The trek to get out to the Outer Richmond is worth it. If you're in the area, try to grab some Boba at Purple Kow nearby. :)

Stopped by for the ShengJian Bao with my girlfriend. Owner wasn’t the friendliest at first but definitely warms up to you(maybe because i shared that i lived in Shanghai for a while). Overall food was authentic and delicious, has two menus, one more authentic and another cater to American customers. You will definitely find what you are looking for here. Located in a busy street with lots of restaurant options, not the most vibrant and good looking one but you will get your money worth for the food. Thanks!

Note: Cash only. Shanghai house restaurant is a hidden gem near golden gate park (Spreckels lake). The restaurant is tiny (fit 8 tables) and easily to miss. I can understand why everyone complain about the service, but bare with it the food is definitely worth it. The wait for food was a bit longer than any other Chinese places (waited for 30 mins). The fried dumplings are excellent and totally recommended.

This place once got shut down by health officials but I keep coming back and so do other customers. The only service there is the boss lady who can come off as rude to non-Asians but I find her just fine. Sometimes the quality is inconsistent depending on the month but it comes back around later on. They are most famous for their Shanghai soup dumplings. Compared to other dumpling places, the meat is fattier which makes it so good. The soup inside is also tasty. The only caveat is that the skin rips too easily.

As the name suggests the restaurant serves Shanghainese dishes. On our visit we didn’t order the dumplings, which looked pretty good so my review may be cutting this place a bit short. We had the lions head meatball, vegetable rice, shredded bean curd with pork, and a vegetable soup. The soup was not very good and was a poor start to the meal. The vegetable rice (菜贩) here didn’t have enough fatty pork flavor and was a bit bland. The best thing I had was the lions head meatballs. I would recommend ordering this dish.

R

From what I read in these reviews it seems they are offering too many things in their menu instead of focusing on the fresh foods they can offer. That chicken was freezer burned. I couldn’t find myself finishing my food in fears I would get sick.

J
Jin Su

Had some xialongbao to start off that were pretty good. Decent skin with nice soup and filling. Had I stopped there and just had that as a snack, I would've given this a 4 star, but I kept on going to get the fried chicken. When I sat down, the grumpy waitress gave me two menus: one was clearly the "chinese" menu, and the other "american". So despite my reservations of ordering from any "american" menu at a chinese restaurant, I did so just to see the hype on the chicken wings. I was not a fan. The skin texture itself was very nice, and crispy. Unfortunately there isn't much spices on it, undoubtedly to allow the sauce to take center stage. And hence, blinding sweetness and syrupy texture dominate the dish. In retrospect, Shanghai food (known to be sweet) and american bastardization of chinese food seems to be a match made in Hell.

I usually order their dry fried chicken wing, XLB, and pan fried dumplings. A little disappointed of the wings and XLB this time. The batter of the wings is too hard, and size is smaller not much meat, sauces is still amazing (Tate's like sweet honey with ginger). XLB skin is too saggy this time, seems like it is over cooked and the meat portion is smaller than it used to be. Pan fried dumpling is juicy inside with thin and crispy skin. Recommend! Saw other people order their beef ball clay pot, pork feet, shrimp, smoked duck, and some noodle dishes...Those all looks good. I may try them next time. The restaurant is small with about 10 small tables. Only one server, and seems like only 2-3 people working in the kitchen. We came here on Sunday 5:10pm, the restaurant is already full, and we were lucky to be seated at the last open table. Waited about 30min for the food. They had many to go orders too. Not sure if the air conditioning is broken in the kitchen, the restaurant got very smoky, and my clothes and hair all smells oily after dinner. Cash only!

In the past I came here a few times and the food was sooooo delicious from top to bottom. Wish I could reflect on those experiences again but I came back after a couple of years recently, dropping in around opening. The hostess was super friendly, found us a seat and then we waited. The woman serving tables however ignored us for plenty long, and eventually began serving tables that sat after us. Wasn't sure why, I am a polite diner. Anyways, we left and I felt as if it was very unprofessional and not reflective of a Bay Area dining experience. I walked right up the street and had out of this world dumplings at the corner. Won't come back here, that's a guarantee.

Shanghai soup dumplings (XLBs) were quite excellent. Everything else we ordered was not worth finishing: tan tan noodles, spicy won tons in peanut sauce, and dry fried chicken wings. The tan tan was particularly objectionable. Skip this place and try Shanghai Dumpling King nearby or Kingdom of Dumplings across the park.

I’ve been to this place like couple times.Foods are amazing here. But the -3 stars is for the wait time over 30 min to get the 1st dish. When the food comes out , me and my friends had to wait even more for the rice. This happens every time we went there. It’s just sad to see the place with great food/ bad service.

Super rude to customers. Came in to order take out and she ignored me for 20 minutes. Then she says it will be 45 minutes. I order and come back 45 minutes later. The food is not even started and the restaurant is half empty. Now it’s another 15 minutes. So yeah 80 minutes of my time to get takeout?

This is one of the worst restaurants where I have ever have been. We ordered two typical Shanghai style dishes: Shanghai sauteeded noodle and salty pepper pork ribs. The ribs was served first. The smell of the rib was weird. When I cut through the pork rib and found it was slightly rotten and raw. The sauteeded noodle came later. We all agreed that it is not Shanghai cooking style. The noodles are about only three inches long. The texture of the noodles were muchy. The noodles were mixed with a lot small pieces of cabbage emerged in a pot of wet, sticky, weird taste, light brown soy sauce. When we politely asked the waitress (maybe one of owners) to see if we could change it to other dishes, she seemed don't care and ask us to leave. She angrily shouted to us :"Don't ever come to our restaurant!"

N
Nicole Rosemberg

The worst attention I've had in a restaurant. The girl who attended was very spoiled from the beginning, and at the time of payment, she tells me that she did not accept a credit card and I did not have any cash, in the end she could pass my card and then she practically shot to the card to the ground. Simply do not go and the food was nothing special

K

This review is just for the service. Quite unfriendly, "no lunch today pick something else. If you don't know what you want you will have the same experience. We tried shrimps and soup was pretty good. Wasn't able to try the rice, instead we got chou mien noodles which were not really good.

Horrible service! Totally unpleasant experience. The owner, also the waiter, seemed very unhappy with our coming at the very beginning. She was indifferent and kept a long face all the time during the service. At the end, she told us they accept cash only, no cards. We had no cash with us at all. Then she said they actually accept cards but one extra dollar must be charged. She never looked at you when she was talking, so you even cannot know which customer she was talking with. The food is just Ok. But the pan fried dumplings are not true Shanghai style.

Disappointing experience. One of our meals never arrived and when we finally asked where it was they said they forgot and the chef had already left for the day. It would have been nice if they communicated to us that that would be the case - especially because it was the dish we were most interested in (the pan fried dumplings which you see in most people’s reviews/photos). We had high hopes for this place given all the reviews but sadly won’t return and don’t recommend it.
