Opinions de Gurung Kitchen San Francisco
I visited this Indo-Nepali restaurant for the first time with my family. Being from Nepal, I didn’t have high expectations since it’s a fusion of Indian and Nepali cuisine. However, I was pleasantly surprised! We ordered sukuti set, momo, pani puri, pakora, and chicken tikka masala. Everything was incredibly authentic. Chicken tikka isn’t a Nepali dish, but it tasted amazing with garlic naan. The customer service was excellent, the ambiance was nice, and the background music added a cool vibe. There was plenty of street parking, and the prices were very reasonable. Highly recommend!
I had a wonderful experience at Gurung Kitchen. We ordered the vegetable chowmein and dhido with local chicken—both dishes were absolutely delicious and full of authentic flavor.
First time having Nepalese food and it was amazing! I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be back. Great service and atmosphere too.
This place is such a hidden gem and deserves way more hype!! I went here on the recommendation of my foodie friend, who said these were the best momos she’s ever had. And she was RIGHT !!! I came and ordered the water buffalo momos and they were DELICIOUS, truly an excellent bite that will make me come back time and time again. The workers were also so so friendly!! 10/10 would recommend, so delicious.
Gurung Kitchen continues to be my go-to choice for dining out, thanks to its superb food, impeccable service by Prajjwol, and inviting atmosphere. Whether you're a regular like me or considering a first-time visit, I highly recommend experiencing the culinary delights and warm hospitality of Gurung Kitchen.
5 stars for food, service, and price. Two of us came by on a Saturday at 12:30pm to a pretty empty dining room (possibly due to the restaurant being right next to the famous San Tung’s). We chose our table, and the server brought out menus and water (and was kind enough to bring us warm water when we asked). The menu is vegetarian friendly, and they even have gluten free naan. We ordered: - Vegetable pakora, 8 pieces for $5.99: crispy and tasty, came with two dipping sauces - Veggie momos, 8 pieces for $10.99: great filling in a wrapper of good thickness, steamed well, came with one dipping sauce - Palak paneer, $13.99: my favorite. Large chunks of paneer in a hearty spinach purée that was fresh and not too oily - Garlic naan, $2.99: naan of medium fluffiness with good flavor (I prefer more fluffiness, but it was still good) We were able to split the check with our two credit cards, and I took leftovers home. By the time we left, the place had about half of its tables filled. I would recommend everything I ordered and am excited to go back to try more of their menu! Update: I went back recently and tried their tandori roti ($3.99), tofu saag ($13.99), and their paneer tikka masala ($14.99). The tandori roti is good and can be ordered dairy-free. The tofu saag is tasty, dairy-free, and a bit spicy! And their paneer tikka masala was okay—the sauce was good, but the chunks of paneer were too big for the runniness of the tikka masala sauce. I definitely prefer the thicker texture of the palak paneer versus the thinner sauce of the palak tikka masala.
We had a very nice dinner at this Nepalese/Indian restaurant. We started with Dal Soup. This was a very flavorful soup. A bit more Dal will make this amazing. We wanted to try different types of momos. They were very accommodating to allow us to have a mix of pork and chicken momos. Momos has great flavor and the sauce was perfectly paired. They also gave us a bowl of the jhol so we may try it. It was delicious. I wanted to try the lamb shank. It was tender and good. Could use a little bit more spice. Bhaigen Bharta was also very good. Everything was sopped up with onion naan which was filled with bits of red onions. I wish we had a few more people to join us. There's so much on the menu I'd like to try. Guess I'll have to return very soon with more mouths to try the rest of the menu.
I am a Nepali who was living in the Outer Sunset for a long time. I had an opportunity to be back in the area for almost a month. I was surprised to see a Nepali restaurant close to where I was living. I didn't have much of a expectation but when I ate their Thali, it turned out to be so good. I tried some of the other items including momo, which were all so delicious. I dined with my host friends and they all liked the food. The owner and staff are all so nice. I highly recommend this place...
Gurung Kitchen is an absolute gem! The dhido deserves a solid 5/5—perfectly cooked and flavorful. Every dish is freshly prepared and absolutely delicious, showcasing authentic and high-quality ingredients. The service is exceptional, warm, and personalized, making you feel genuinely valued as a guest. The atmosphere is inviting and chill, ideal for both casual dining and a relaxed evening out. Even the restroom is impressively well-maintained and smells fresh, which speaks volumes about their attention to detail. We highly recommend Gurung Kitchen and will definitely be coming back for more!
I tried Gurung Kitchen during my first visit to San Francisco. The restaurant had a great atmosphere, wonderful food, and an inviting staff. If you're not sure what to order (because everything looks good, and you're indecisive like me), I recommend asking the staff for recommendations. My party had the privilege of being served by the restaurant owner; she guided us through the menu and made wonderful suggestions. We especially loved the Nepalese dumplings! I highly recommend trying Gurung Kitchen if you are a fan of South Asian cuisine.
We had a fantastic experience at Gurung Kitchen! Deepak was incredibly friendly and accommodating, making us feel so welcome from the moment we walked in. The food was absolutely delicious—the presentation was thoughtful and inviting, and every dish was full of flavor. We had the best chowmein we’ve had in a long time—it instantly took me back to the flavors of Nepal. Highly recommend this spot for anyone craving authentic and comforting Nepali cuisine!
We tried the gobi Manchurian, buffalo chili momo, goat thakali thali set, and chicken friend rice. It was daunting as I was not familiar with traditional Nepalese food, and the waitress was very kind and offered her assistance and recommendations. Overall the food was rich in flavor and there was a spicy condiment available. You can get complimentary refills on the rice / lentils. We also got a complimentary rice pudding desert. Would recommend!
Very nice Nepali restaurant. Loved the food here. Had chow mein, gobi manchurian and chili paneer. All the things tasted good. They had just the right amount of all spices, which is super rare. The staff was super nice. For complimentary papad too. The price was reasonably good. The quantity was also fine. The tea was nice and strong too. Good place for vegetarians.

The only place that opened on a holiday. But they were friendly and attentive staff. The chief came out and checked in regarding the food. Ordered the chicken korma, pharsi ra chana, veg momo, and butter naan. Delicious food, esp the veg momo. Will definitely come back to try out the rest of the menu.

While walking on Irving street between 12th and 9th street in San Francisco, I came across Gurung Restaurant. It sounded different amidst all other Asian restaurants on that stretch of the street. I stopped by to take a peek at the menu by the entrance. Ah ha! The menu had a big list of Indian dishes both veg and non-veg. I decided to take a peek into the restaurant and was pleased with a welcoming decor of flower-decked walls that made me feel like I entered into a garden. It being a cool and misty afternoon, I was craving for some hot and spicy snacks. I ordered a couple of veg dishes such as Veg-Chilli Momos and Chilli Paneer to start with. Both the dishes were delicious, perfectly cooked to be soft and juicy. I also tried their Gobhi-Manchurian, it was crunchy and had perfect spices and sauces. All the dishes tasted so authentic. Am for sure going back to try their other dishes. I have to point out that the staff was very friendly and gave great suggestions when asked about the choices meeting our craving-level :) Great ambiance and yummy food! A go to place for Indian food!
Love this gem. Have been getting take out for a while and finally got to eat in with our family. We enjoy their curries, momo and really loved the pani puri this time. Good variety and all very tasty.
Wonderful food and service! Went with two friends and we got seated right away. Wonderful Nepali dishes. Went with two friends and had pakoras for an appetizer. Delicious mint sauce for dipping! I ordered vegetable byriani with no salt and no spice. (Yo soy un gringa.) My friends got medium spicy and loved it too! Am definitely coming again.
Having spent time in many villages in the Gorkha district and having close Gurung friends, I can say with confidence that Gurung Kitchen is absolutely perfect. The food is incredible — traditional, authentic, and beautifully prepared. Every dish feels like it was made with care and love, just like in Nepal. The atmosphere is peaceful and welcoming, with lovely flower and butterfly decorations that make the space feel warm and special. You’ll notice that many of the guests are Nepali, which tells you how true to home the flavors are. The service is gentle, kind, and attentive — you really feel taken care of here. This is a restaurant that serves not just food, but genuine hospitality and culture. Definitely a must-visit in San Francisco. I’ll be coming back every time I’m in the city!

On August 2nd, we visited their restaurant because both my boyfriend and I were craving a good Nepali thali. The owner was very kind, and the service was excellent. OMG, the thali was absolutely delicious! I loved the variety of dishes on the plate. Honestly, it was the best thali I’ve ever had in the entire Bay Area. The interior decor was also beautifully done, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We’ll definitely be going back again!
Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Overall: One of the better Nepalese places I've been to in the city. The extended review... Food: Buff Momos - 4/5 - A very hearty dumpling and tasty at that. These are fairly big and are a good way to start the meal. Lamb Korma - 4/5 - A very tasty lamb dish. The sauce is rich and flavorful and there is a good amount of lamb. Garlic Naan - 4/5 - Pretty standard fare and a good way to compliment my main. Service: 4/5 - Friendly and attentive service. Ambiance: 4/5 - A fairly bright and cheerful interior.
This place had great food!! I ordered the chicken vindaloo and butter naan during lunchtime which were both so delicious🤤 The food took a while to come out but was worth the wait. At first, I didn’t realize it was a food place since from the window, I only saw a fake, decorated tree and fake flowers. I’m glad I found their menu outside or else I would’ve walked right by it, thinking it was a floral shop or something of the sort. Amazing spot but easy to miss as there’s not much close-up signage on the outside aside from a small menu to the left of the door.

While exploring San Francisco, we were thrilled to discover a Nepalese restaurant nearby. Our excitement was shared by our 3-year-old son, who was eagerly looking forward to the food. We arrived for lunch around 3 pm, but unfortunately, our experience was marred by slow and sloppy service. After waiting for about 15 minutes, we were served complimentary papads. However, our actual order took a staggering 45 minutes to arrive, causing our hungry son to become extremely cranky, and we adults felt the same. The service was disappointingly slow and lacked efficiency. For our meal, we ordered Veg Momo, Chicken Chowmein, Chicken Thukpa, and Dhido. We requested medium spiciness, but it wasn’t enough for us. The Veg Momos were decent in taste, but the Chowmein and Thukpa were rather bland. We had high hopes for the street-style flavor of the Chowmein, but it fell short. Additionally, the soup lacked flavor. To our surprise, instead of receiving Dhido, we were served Thakali Thali. When we inquired, we were informed that Dhido would take an additional 15 minutes, but we couldn't wait any longer, so we settled for the Thali. Fortunately, the Thali had a good taste. However, the portion of rice provided with the Thali was insufficient, so we had to order more. As a final disappointment, we ordered Samosa Chaat as a to-go order, but were surprised to find only 2 Samosas in the box. It was another instance of sloppy service and a failure to accurately fulfill our order. Overall, our experience at the restaurant left us feeling highly disappointed. The slow service, lackluster flavors, and errors in fulfilling our order contributed to our dissatisfaction.
