Opinions de Hunan House San Francisco
My go to legit Chinese spot - good prices, excellent food! Have been before many times with family and friends, can accommodate groups of all sizes. FOOD: This is a Hunan place - the food from the region is numbing spicy and that is their specialty, so many options are that flavor - It’s not burning hot, just a tingling feeling! That being said, I have taken several timid friends and had plenty of delicious non-spicy items as well. Also have a vegetarian menu in the back of the menu, a decent selection of veggie/tofu options and some dishes that can be customized to be veggie. (Some vegetables in the vegetable section are stir fried with meat for flavor, definitely check before you order). ORDERING - If you have a Chinese speaking friend to go with that will certainly unlock the smoothest ordering, especially if you have dietary restrictions (I speak Chinese). But the menu is huge and has great translations AND clear photos (not that common!) so you can still order just fine as a non-Chinese speaker. I encourage you to go beyond what you’re used to and try something new. Food is all family style and should be shared. They also have menu sets in the back that are customized to different flavor profiles also (e.g. mandarin that veers sweeter American Chinese, gourmet menu for classic American Chinese, Hunan for spicy authentic dishes from the region). It’s a nice touch if you feel hesitant to order and they also recommend the number of dishes based on the number of people. SERVICE/ATMOSPHERE - Exactly what you expect and what I prefer - no fussing, call over when needed for things like more water or utensils. Same with atmosphere, standard booths and tables. QUALITY / VALUE: For 8 people, we got 3 apps and 8 family style dishes. The food is amazing and comes out hot and fresh as it’s made. Including rice for everyone. several beers and tip, the price was roughly $35pp and everyone was so full AND there were leftovers. In this current SF dinner climate that feels like a steal! This is my FAVORITE old-school type of Chinese place that I grew up going to. They have great regional Hunan food that I hope you try AND great American Chinese food too. I am so happy that they’re around to give you great food at a great price. Please give it a try!
Delicious and affordable Hunan cuisine, especially the grilled squid, highly recommended.
Great Chinese food, cannot go wrong. We love all the dishes, especially the rib dish. The price is reasonable. Would eat there again.
Traveled to SF recently and was taken to this restaurant by my Aunt who swore that it was amazing. I agree. Its weeks later since my trip anf I am still thinking about the food which is why I am leaving this review. Very flavorful, affordable and delicious. 10/10 would recommend.
Very good atmosphere and amazing food. Didn't feel bloated like most Chinese food, felt good after. Highly recommend. Reasonable prices for SF too
One of the best Chinese food in Chinatown. We stayed at the Hilton in financial district and was looking for a place to have dinner, and was attracted by all the different Chinese dishes (both Cantonese and Sichuan) shown in their menu. The restaurant wasn’t fancy looking, just like an average restaurant with red antique decor, but their food was excellent. I had the best tasting Cantonese roasted duck that flavorful but not overly salty and crispy delicious skin. They weee sold out of their spicy lamb chops, but the server suggested their toothpick lamb which was excellent. The restaurant doesn’t offer live seafood in tanks, but will cook them for you if you bring them in. They do offer seafood dishes, just not live off the tanks. Their wine corkage fee is also the lowest I’ve paid (under $10).
Visited January 2nd, 2026 After an amazing visit at Mark’s Hair Salon, I asked the gentleman at the salon for a Chinese restaurant recommendation, specifically one that served dumplings. He not only recommended Hunan House, but he actually walked us there. That small act of kindness set the tone for what turned out to be a wonderful dining experience. My daughters, who are six and seven, had been craving dumplings all day, especially after patiently waiting for over two hours while I got my hair done. When we arrived, we saw that the menu offered two types of dumplings, the Shanghai dumplings and the pan fried dumplings. We ordered both for the girls, and they absolutely devoured every single one. My husband and I did not even get a taste, which honestly says everything about how much they loved them. We also ordered chow mein noodles with just chicken and noodles for the kids, which they enjoyed very much. The portions were generous and the flavors were comforting and satisfying, exactly what they wanted. For my husband and I, we ordered the black pepper shredded pork and the crispy fried fish with explosive chilies. Both dishes were exceptional. The flavors were bold, well balanced, and incredibly enjoyable. Every bite was delicious, and we truly appreciated the care and skill that went into preparing the food. The service was quick, efficient, and courteous, and the food arrived hot and fresh. From the kindness of the initial recommendation to the quality of the meal itself, this experience made our day even more special. We are so grateful for this recommendation and could not be happier with our visit.
Great place w beautiful ambience. Fast service, super tasting food w clean restrooms. The food tasted so fresh and each and every dish tasted awesome! We ordered so many dishes and we all loved what we ate. Lot of Vegetarian options. A must try if you are in China town.
This was better hunan cuisine than any we've had in Shenzhen or Hong Kong. The 麻辣魚塊 was amazing. Other dishes we had were excellent too. We went there a second time on a Saturday at 11 am, when they are supposed to be open according to Google Maps hours and the schedule on their web site. They were not open. Later I called them and was told that they are open at 12 pm on Sat and Sun. This info is not posted on the door or online.
Hunan House sits in the heart of Chinatown, they have a vast menu with every dish the average American is familiar with and MORE! This was the absolute best Chinese food I’ve ever had. Full disclosure, I’m a Texas native and to my knowledge, there’s no Chinatown in our entire great state. We had a party of 9, each ordered 2 dishes to try as much as we could and every dish delivered! The management and staff were very friendly and extremely accommodating. This is definitely one I would recommend to everyone!!
It’s authentic!! If you know what that means. You won’t be surprised. The food is plenty, tasty and the service was excellent! Tse-Tse goes a long way…you’re welcome 😊
Listen it wasn’t the cleanest but I wanted some good Chinese food and that’s what I got! Delicious and quick service!
Love that they serve hot tea complimentary before we ordered. Great portions, great tasting food. I got broccoli beef and sesame chicken, spring rolls, white rice, sake, beer, and diet Coke.

How do you rate a restaurant? Seatings, cleanness, services? The bottom line is that they have tasty food. This restaurant has good spicy food! For that, I will eat there again 😋
I like the main dishes, but it's the hot pot that brings me back every time. The menu is extensive with great value on delicious food. I'd love to give 5 stars but the service is slow and occasionally reluctant (who doesn't offer spoons and bowls with an order for soup?)
The menu gave me so many options to choose from. I decided on the Shaved Tendon Salad with Cucumber in hot chili oil. And the Beef Knuckles which is the Chefs Special. Can't wait to go back and try the Geoduck and Salmon Shashimi. Better than fair prices and each plate (about 18.00s) is enough for 2 to 3 people.
What we had was very good! It's a small restaurant and the prices are very reasonable! Highly recommended and I will be returning!
Tasty, reasonably priced food. Versatile menu as you would expect. Lively ambience, a bit worn down.

Great food and quantity was huge as well. We ordered mushroom mix, Bok Choy, green onion pancake and fried rice. All of them were tasty and well made. Would certainly recommend the place.
Food: Pretty good. We ordered a lot of dishes and the Ginger and Scallion Lamb was our favorite. It was really well seasoned and sometimes crispy. The only bad dish was the Garlic Pork with bamboo since for me it had a bad aftertaste. 👎 Service: if you don't speak any Chinese or Cantonese might be a bit difficult. The restaurant itself also had a cigarette smell cause of the other customers. Recommendation, get take out! Food is pretty good 👍
Looks fun and popular inside but the food both times I've come here has been subpar, I ordered the bitter melon pork and the chicken with chillis and I've had versions of these dishes at other places in the area that were tastier for the same price. Nice staff and free tea though!

The food was fine, it wasn't anything great. The service was quick once they took your order. The place was small but we were seated right away.

The serve the food very slowly, we waited for more than 40 minutes. The food in the picture was not well cooked, actually there was even blood in the meat we ordered, when we told the servant that it was not well cooked, they just said that the it was how well cooked food looks like. They included the tips in the final bill, which is a shame.
