Opinions de Moby Dick San Francisco
Moby Dick is my favorite bar in San Francisco. A truly community oriented gay bar with the most welcoming staff and great pours. They play great music videos and this is the best spot to celebrate all types of occasions such as catching up with a friend or a big gay holiday such as Halloween. They also have a pool table, rotating art for purchase, and oceanic themed decor including a large fish tank above the bar. Delightful!
Mobys is a great pub with a pool table ($2 bucks) and a very comfortable setting. The barkeep was personable and helpful. The bloody, great saltwater aquarium is a relaxing attraction. Friendly patrons to us two tourists.
Great space for happy hour drinks. It’s fun & chill - the bartender was great & so friendly. Happy hour is such a steal.
Great! I loved sitting at the window and getting a drink. We ordered food from a place down the street and enjoyed eating it at the bar. It was delivered to us and really was great! 10/10!!
What a nice place to hangout with friends! It's such a easy going bar - the bar keeper was under the pump though, he was BUSY! The place is awesome and their happy hour drinks are amazing value!
Super cool peeps… good pool table and 3 working pinball machines … what more could a boy want?!?
Great cocktail and friendly bartender. Love the fish tank.

We were on our honeymoon and out to enjoy a night in San Francisco in early October. The name stood out to me so we walked on in and ordered some drinks on a Wednesday night. Little did we know they had a drag show starting a few hours after we arrived. Lucky us!! This was my husband's first time experiencing one. He loved it! Of course I loved it! Nice little place for cocktails, beers, maybe a game of pool, and an AWESOME drag show.
I'm not the established audience for this establishment, but I had the time of my life here! Very reasonable beverages and a very reasonable price, but that's not what made the night. I met the most friendly and kind people I've ever encountered. My wife and I will definitely be returning. If I could give 10 stars I would!
One of the mainstays in the ‘hood’ and is a great pub. Beautifully decorated for holidays, great pool table, and friendly service. Nice crowd.
I love this bar. It's a nice neighborhood bar. Love the large wall size fish tank. The bartender are personable. Not just wanting tops like other places. It Can get busy so be patient. There's no patio so if you smoke u have to go out front. They have a bowel of complimentary condoms. Beer prices are low, drinks are as well. Great place to hang with your buddies
Came to the city for the first time ever on vacation. Of our 6 night stay, we were at Moby Dick’s 5 of those nights. Nate and Bryan treated me and my best friend like they had known us forever (which is rare to find in the bar scene). We will always come back here when we return to the city. Just a good down to earth bar. Thanks Nate & Bryan! These guys are an assert to this place. The drinks were fantastic. 10/10 would recommend!
Wandered in on a Sunday afternoon for a quick drink. The bartender was friendly, the atmosphere was chill. Overall a casual, unpretentious vibe.
I have such a fondness for this bar! Everyone is friendly and lots of locals hang here. There is a pool table! They also have an amazing aquarium behind the bar that is beautiful!

Cute place, and bartender was really nice. I liked the 70s music that was being played, but be aware of this if that isn't your thing.

If you'r looking for a low-key dive, this is it. The crowd varies depending on the day of the week and the time of night you're there, but there's really nothing special about this, as one reviewer has already said, except the fish tank. The bartenders are friendly, and the drinks are strong. It being a little farther from Castro Street can mean a little less crowded. Definitely a place we like!
This local bar made us feel right at home. The beer on tap is in wide array and very well priced, as is the cocktails during happy hour. We had planned to bar hop most nights in SF, but always seemed to hang out here. A great casual spot where you can mingle, play pool and enjoy yourself.
Great place for a beer. Friendly and helpful humans behind the bar. Bar chat was great, dog fussing too. Thanks folks.

Visiting. I got refused service at the bar because my ID was damaged. it's a french ID and yes the corners were a bit damaged since I'm 35yo and this was issued more than 10years ago. But there is absolutely no issue in verifying that the ID is good and the DOB is clearly readable. I even offered to show a picture of my passport on my phone. Anyways I went next door to Midnight Sun and there was no issue as well with other bars in Castro. Don't go complaining people don't support gay bar when you literally refuse service for stupid reasons. Bye.
I very rarely leave reviews anywhere, but one of the bouncers working the night of 6/29/25 made me feel extremely unwelcome as a trans man, so please be careful. This bouncer decided to separate me from my group and aggressively question and ID me. First he separated me, then he asked me something I didn't hear, then immediately starting being like "are you frustrated, sir?" It was so weird and out of nowhere. He took my ID from me, kept antagonizing me, trying to get me to be angry, maybe? I still have no clue, I was just staring at him confused. I assumed he thought I was plastered, so I told him I had only been drinking water that night, which was true. He KEPT GOING though, and wouldn't let me in! It got so bad my dad (cis gay man who this bouncer clearly respected more) had to come out of the bar to try and get me, and I just straight-up had to ask the bouncer "what are you trying to sus out, man?" He couldn't answer me, got flustered, then he literally turned to my partner with 'he/him' pronoun earings after and said "I didn't mean anything by it! I love your earrings!" Once he figured out he'd made an absolute fool of himself. It was actually really upsetting, I kind of just hung out by the pinball machines in the back just in utter shock at how I was treated until eventually just slipping out. Other bar patrons were literally trying to comfort me, that's how bad it was. (Btw if any of you see this somehow for some reason, thank you. I didn't reply at the time cause it was loud and because I was so upset but it helped. Don't worry I had an awesome Pride otherwise! Also shout out to the bartenders - my dad said they seemed to know what happened and were really nice lol. I'm so sorry you all have to work with this nonsense!) But really, what kind of LGBT place would separate out people like that to ID?! I already have to deal with TSA scanning my body and patting me down basically everytime I board a plane for existing as trans, which I just did coming from SD to SF FOR PRIDE, only to get this nonsense in Castro, of all places?? I mean yeesh. EDIT TO ADD: Google I edited the language to appease your AI like 8 different times, post it this review already! I'm trying to warn people! Also, I checked other review sites to see if this guy has given anyone else problems: in just the past couple weeks, multiple other people (allegedly) were being barred/ delayed from entering the establishment while the bouncer was questioning them about their race/ background. Embarassing for the establishment, honestly. I learned this is a really old historic bar, too, that even made it through COVID...pretty depressing it's run like this.
Being a customer of theirs for years, they never asked me for her to get in the one night I got locked out of my apartment close by and I was able to prove them to my my apartment is locked and they’re not letting me in until the next morning, I asked to get in with a clear picture of my ID clear picture of mine my driver license full list of all the credit cards under my name and they still extremely aggressively pulled me up and push me out of the place. Just do not let me in. I’ve seen people getting without their license checked. This is illegal.
I came here earlier this week with my boyfriend. Drinks were decent (by gay bar standards) and the ambiance was good. I thought the service was great until the bartender requested to close our tab early after a single round without offering us another order—effectively asking us to leave. We were a reasonably well-dressed, quiet gay couple and it was a slow, early tuesday evening. Why give us the boot? Extremely alienating.
