Opinions de New Eritrean Restaurant & Bar San Francisco
I loved the food. This was my first time trying Eritrean food which is not surprising since the county is only two years older than I am. The food is very similar to Ethiopian food which is to be expected but I definitely detected nuances in the flavor profile that were distinct. However, I don't think I could verifiably state those differences. I was expecting a more spartan atmosphere but the design inside the restaurant was modern. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was praiseworthy. The price isn't too bad for being steps away from Golden Gate Park.
They offer numerous vegetable and meat options. Enjoyed everything we had--cooked well with distinctive spices. Was all very tasty. The waitstaff was very friendly.
The food is packed full of flavor! Would definitely come here again. Staff was very friendly and prices are reasonable. Extremely fun using the flat bread to scoop up the food. We came on black Friday at around 5pm and it wasn't too busy. I would highly recommend the meat combo plate.
Great place for Eritrean food. We ordered the meat combo platter with a side of the mushroom sauté (kantisha) and catfish (asa kilwa). The veggies were my favorite, adequately spiced and prepared, and the lamb (alicha begee). Plenty of food for 2 people. Friendly staff, good food, nice ambience.
I went here for my birthday in May and it was absolutely delicious! We had the vegetarian combo and meat combo as well as sambusa and some ginger ales. My daughter who is usually picky really enjoyed this and the server made sure she got a mild spice meat. I can’t wait to come here again. The service was quick and friendly too!
Amazing Ethiopian food! We ordered their vegetarian platter and chicken curry, both were delicious! Staff are friendly and are willing to guide you in what to order. Injera bread was fluffy and the curries had well balanced flavors! Definitely recommend this place!
Great Ethioian food. We got the sampler which came with the spongy and souŕ bread for dipping. Healthy vegetarian food with yummy spices that is eaten with your hands, utencils provided if need be. Fun! Big bar there too.
Had a delicious assortment of food, including an order of kitfo. The beef dish was very flavorful and had a great texture. The chicken we also had was a big portion and the in jars bread was very fresh and had great flavor and sponginess. Would certainly go back
Definitely try #9, and don’t miss their combination plates they’re packed with flavor and a great way to sample a variety of dishes. The honey wine is fantastic, so be sure to grab a bottle with your meal. Plus, they offer great vegetarian options. Highly recommend!

The vegetarian sampler is a popular choice, featuring well-spiced and comforting options like lentils, collard greens, and potatoes. Meat-eaters can savor dishes like kitfo (beef tartare) and the New Eritrea Special, a flavorful chicken and mushroom dish. A must-try are the flaky beef sambusas. All dishes are enjoyed with injera, the spongy flatbread central to Eritrean/Ethiopian dining. The restaurant's ambiance is warm and inviting, with a lively bar scene and comfortable seating areas. New Eritrea provides friendly service and consistently delivers delicious food, making it a reliable choice for both a casual meal and a group gathering.
We got the Vegetarian platter for two and it was amazing!! Customer service was so good and we had a great time. We paid about $50 total for two people including drinks and the lentil Sambusa (which was also SO GOOD) 10/10 will be going again :)
Great vegetable platter. Each dish is perfectly balanced and very bold, and the injera is tender and acidic. The beef sambusas are awesome too. I really loved eating here, and I found the prices to be super reasonable.

So flavorful and affordable! Sat at the bar and got the meat and veggie combo entrees per recommendation. The lamb was my favorite part of the plate
Excellent food! We got the vegetarian platter for 2 and everything was delicious and flavorful. Service was very quick and friendly. We were impressed by the great vegetarian options and enjoyed every item.
We’ve been long-time patrons of New Eritrea and are big fans. We love how scrumptious everything is and there are tons of vegan options. Lately, we’ve been ordering the platter for two but it’s time to go big and upgrade to the platter for three. We love the injera and gobbling up the saucy remains.
Great experience! I love coming here, it has a very comforting and relaxing environment. The customer service is excellent, and the food is delicious, especially the vegetarian platter and the sambusa's. It’s a warm and friendly atmosphere, and I would definitely recommend this place! As far as other Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurants go, this is by far #1!
I love this place! Neighborhood gem. So delicious and such a lovely family business (the owner is so friendly). My partner and I been going here for years. I very recently became vegan and am so grateful I can still keep coming here. I didn't even realize all the veggies dishes we used to get were labeled vegan until I became vegan! Highly recommend the Kantisha (ask for it spicy if you like spicy — it's so delicious spicy), the Tumtumo, and Hamli. And before I went vegan, I used to love their meat sambusa. I still miss that lol but I'll take having almost half the menu still available to me! :-) If you like wine, their honey wine is tasty and sweet and deceptively strong hahah.

I have been coming here for almost two years and i will keep coming here as long as they deliver even a tenth of their current quality of food. The gored gored is excellent, closely followed by the service. The bathroom has both a urinal and a toilet stall with a door which makes it so that you can wash your hands / use the urinal even if the stall is occupied. The ambiance with the lighting and the back atrium that lets in light during the day while allowing the homey sophistication to set in during the evenings is top notch. Few places where I can get still get such good value for money in this part of the country.
The food was very good. The way they cook their meats, stews, and even the potatoes has flavors that feel somewhat familiar to Latin American cooking, which made the dishes easy to enjoy. Nothing extremely out of the ordinary, but definitely a pleasant experience and a great way to try something different. The ambience was very nice — warm, relaxed, and with a comfortable atmosphere. The decoration throughout the restaurant added to the experience. The service was normal. Nothing bad, nothing exceptional, just straightforward and efficient. Overall, a good place to try new flavors and enjoy a different style of cuisine.
Tried a new ethiopian restaurant after really long time. Food was great! We got the vegetarian platters for two with the chicken. We also got the mixed veg sambusa. I think the lentil sambusa would have been a better choice. Service was a little slow but they seemed a little understaffed at the time on a Friday night. I was not expecting the restaurant to be as large as it was.

This is my first time eating Ethiopian food, and I wasn't impressed. Got what seemed to be the most popular dish, which is basically some bread with dips. Maybe this is an acquired taste? Service was almost inexistent, as well as silverware. When the waitress finally brought some, at the end of my meal, after I had requested twice before, felt more like a sarcastic joke than compliance to a customer request. Should I have gotten up and asked for a manager? Maybe, but I also don't go out to cause trouble. Especially when I am hungry. Definitely overpriced for what you are getting.

The food is good but the portions are insufficient. We got a $80 vegetarian platter for 4 and all four of us left the restaurant hungry. I don't quite understand why they don't serve more reasonable portions because all the "dips" are made in bulk and in advance.
