What started an ill-timed latte-induced cold-sweat-level emergency pit stop mid-jog, ended with the absolute best beef with broccoli dish of my life. Though the dish was purchased (to go) out of pure obligation and consumed hours later when things had "settled out", I will definitely be returning under more comfortable circumstances to enjoy it properly.
Love this place, consistently good. Crack fish, green beans and tofu, cumin lamb, beef pancake (BYOB)
Everything here was delicious, service was lovely and friendly. We had a great time and will be back soon!
I ate here with my brother, we had a fairly big party. The menu has a ton of options (vegan included!). Most of us got lamb dishes and one friend ordered a tofu dish. The tofu was a weird--in a good way--texture; hard on the outside but soft and spongy once you bite into it. It's definitely a process how they cooked it for it to be that way and it's great. The service and food are quality and the atmosphere was upbeat. I highly recommend this place. We all can't wait to come back!
This is easily one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area, offering a fully halal menu. The food is consistently amazing, with a wide variety of dishes that cater to all tastes. Whether you’re craving something spicy, savory, or unique, there’s something for everyone. The staff is incredibly friendly, and despite the place being packed most of the time, the service is quick and efficient. The lively atmosphere adds to the dining experience. Highly recommended—10/10 for anyone looking for authentic and flavorful halal Chinese cuisine!
great food, great people! don't expect too much service just enjoy your food and leave this type of great food comes with a more than a price also make sure try lemon chicken tho
Outstanding experience and the best Halal Chinese restaurant in San Francisco! The food was delicious with full flavor, and the service was top-notch. This spot in the Sunset District is a must-try. Definitely coming back soon, In Sha Allah!
Great food and friendly owner. Cumin lamb and Mongolian beef are great
Amazing place! Not fancy, not really a nice date spot. But the food is really special and delicious. Family owned place with authentic cooking. Well priced and a place where you can get a lot of stuff that’s really hard to find elsewhere. Get the Beijing style beef pancakes! They are a highlight!
I recently eat at Old Mandarin Islamic Restaurant and have very good experience. The food quality is very high, and every dish is fresh and tasty. The cooking is perfect and shows they care about real Chinese Muslim food. The portions are big and the prices are fair, so it is good value for money. The restaurant is very clean, which makes it nice and comfortable to eat there. The place feels cozy, and the staff is very friendly and helpful, making sure we feel welcome. The flavors are rich and well-seasoned, with just the right amount of spice. Overall, Old Mandarin Islamic Restaurant gives a unique and enjoyable dining experience. The mix of high-quality ingredients, delicious food, and clean, inviting atmosphere makes it a place you must visit if you want to enjoy real halal Chinese food. Highly recommend!
Being visitors from Vancouver, this was our first halal hot pot experience. The food was amazing and left us satisfied and happy. The staff was helpful with recommendations. I would suggest half spicy and half non spicy broth. We had the lamb meatballs, lamb and beef strips, cod and shrimp. It was a lot of food for the 3 of us and the mochi dessert was the perfect end to a great meal. Highly recommend this restaurant,
Old Mandarin has been one of my favorite places for years. The service is always amazing and the food comes quickly. It's always freshly made, delicious, and has a homemade feel to it. Also the whole menu is halal, which is a huge plus! A few of my favorite items are: 3 flavored dumplings Scallion pancake Chicken corn soup Cumin lamb Crack fish Green beans and tofu Sesame chicken Mongolian beef
The food here is delicious. The people working here are beyond welcoming. Not sure what there is to dislike. I’ll be coming back here over and over again. One hack, order the tripe…it’s amazing
Friendly staff. A bit crowded in terms of spacing. There was a back room that opened up for overflow next door. The food came out quickly. The green onion pancake was good and not too greasy. The highlight for me was the cumin lamb stir fry. The hot and sour soup was not too salty but could use a bit more vinegar which was available at the table.
Based on the reviews, it's hard to determine if Old Mandarin is among the best or the worst restaurants in SF. So I decided to check it out for myself. From the outside, it has a simple vibe and is very up-front about being a Halal restaurant (which I appreciate as a Muslim). Stepping inside, I can admire the variety of decorations and artwork that cover the walls. My party is quickly guided to a table and provided with menus. The waiter wasn't particularly chatty, but he was friendly, professional, & prompt, which is all I look for. He collected our orders and within a few minutes, the food was ready. For entrees, I shared the Cumin Lamb Stir-Fry and the Eggplant in Spicy Garlic Sauce, both of which were recommended in . The lamb was flavorful and satisfying, while the subtle sweetness of the eggplant was beautifully complemented by the sauce. A simple side of white rice was all else that was needed to complete my meal. I will now touch on price, which seems to be a contentious point in many reviews. Firstly, a few have called out the "hidden" fees that materialized on the receipt, like the gratuity. However, the menu was pretty upfront about what they included.. (Now you may have an opinion on the existence of those fees, but that's probably outside the scope of a review..) Secondly, I am stumped as to why the prices are considered higher than expected. I have never considered SF a "cheap" place to eat, and there are far worse offenders that should be called out before Old Mandarin. My guess is that this is more expensive than other Chinese "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants, but I cannot classify this as "merely" hole-in-the-wall due to the quality and the exclusive usage of Halal ingredients. I was pretty satisfied with the portions, and the per-person cost was ~$30, hardly the worst for an occasional dine-in meal. One point I will agree with is that they should offer free water in a glass, instead of assuming "water" == $2 bottled water. I suppose Europeans would be used to this.. Overall, I was happy with my meal at Old Mandarin and look forward to future visits. Maybe I will have to revise my review but I hope not.
You will never know how amazing this restaurant if you not go inside. It’s a restaurant, the food here is so great, fresh and delicious. but it really more likes a Chinese traditional culture museum. The owner has so many old furnitures, everything has their own stories. I’m so attracted by the owner when he talked about the history and culture. And also, the owner took so many pics with very famous people. If you like Chinese history and traditional Chinese tastes, try here. You will not disappoint.
Truly the most delicious meat I've ever tasted! I highly recommend it. Especially the lemon chicken, onion pancake, spicy beef stew, and lamb shank. The lamb shank was cooked to perfection, the meat was incredibly tender. The same goes for the lemon chicken, which falls apart the moment you touch it. I will DEFINITELY COMING BACK, I LOVED IT!
The restaurant was not clean or well decorated and the service was typical of a Chinese restaurant. If you could get past all these, the food is really awesome. Some of my personal favorites were fried lamb skewers, hot and spicy beef tripes, boiled lamb pickled cabbage clay pot, Beijing beef pancake, lamb stir-fry and clear flat noodle and their Beijing style hotpot. Their dipping sauce was really good with the lamb slices and beef tripe. I would highly recommend anyone looking for authentic Beijing Chinese cuisine to give this place a try.
Everything here on menu, amazing. Pleasing to a wide-crowd, an excellent option when dining out with halal or kosher friends. A reflection of China’s rich history along the Silk Road. Cumin Lamb, a highlight. Spice-forward and dry stir-fried, water chestnuts a textural treat. Crack Fish Chef’s Special, reminiscent of a Sichuan classic — with a mildly mala, chili pepper and numbing peppercorn broth. Eggplant, excellent. Alcohol (including baijiu) available — menu perfect as drinking accompaniments.
Their food is gorgeous 😍 The pro of traditional Beijing hala cuisine, you will know how special they are when you have kind of experience living in Beijing for over 10 years! But if you're not I strongly recommend beginning with various pancakes and dumplings first then trying lamb and beef meat main courses, you may experience ignoring during busy hours when the owner's close friends are there(just the same as other traditional family ownership Italian restaurants if you have been to Milano or somewhere like that) but never worry about the taste, as I grow up in Beijing and love hala food I am so satisfied and soak up the atmosphere. (By the way, they have Eileen Gu's favorite pancake, hope you can find out.)

Amazing restaurant. Super fast, some of the best Chinese food I’ve had. We eat here every time we take our daughter to the zoo.
Some of the best Chinese food I’ve had in San Francisco - a multiple Michelin guide listed restaurant over the course of its existence, this is a must-visit family run restaurant that is a staple in SF. They have lots of options - but what makes this place famous is it’s “Extremely Hot Pepper” (chicken / tofu) dish. It’s one of the spiciest dishes I’ve had in my life, and somehow also one of the best Chinese dishes I’ve ever had. A fun challenge that is legendary among our friend group. Be sure to order fried rice or scallion pancakes to save yourself. As a small note - they only serve bottled water. People in the comments here need to stop overreacting to it, if you’re coming here to eat it’s a small price to pay for amazing food. It’s not expensive at all, and you can take it home with you :)
A place that I don't get out to often, but one of our favorites. My husband and I love the Cumin Lamb. We get it each time we go/order. A little on the pricey side, but the food is well worth it. Whether you are dining in or taking out, I highly recommend giving this place a try.

It’s great spot to try halal Chinese cuisine. My favorite food was cumin lamb and beef soup. It’s in neighborhoods location and surroundings makes this place feel more of an authentic experience. Overall food is great but can be pricey.
Food was good. Service is “traditional Chinese” :-D Folks complain about price, but the portions were fine except the cumin lamb. The menu clearly states they add tip for parties 3-4, 4-5, 6+ fwiw
Service is wonderful. Price is reasonable in respect of area, quality and current economy. Food tastes is not consistent. in our last visit we found Mongolian beef was salty and lamb was not that great like other days. However we appreciate there excellent service.
The food was really good. The lamb and chicken were seasoned perfectly, the lemon chicken was crunchy, and the beef stew tasted great! However, I was disappointed because I saw a post on Instagram saying that the tea was complimentary, but it wasn’t. I asked the lady if we could have the complimentary tea, and she didn’t inform us that it wasn’t actually complimentary. She brought it to us and then charged us for it!
07/30/25 Old Mandarin Islamic Restaurant was recommended to us by a friend, so we decided to give it a try! Parking: For a quiet day in San Francisco, parking was okay, however it was a bit of trouble for a bigger vehicle. Thankfully, the parking spot we got was on the opposite side of the street and relatively close to the restaurant. Seating: Once arriving to the restaurant, there were only two pairs of people who were seated, so there was no wait time to get a table for our big group. Service: The staff were incredibly kind and were offering us suggestions on places to go during our visit (we were tourists)! We did not have to wait very long before our food came, which was surprising since we ordered six dishes. Food: The food was fresh, served piping hot, and every dish had a different flavour. The shrimp was juicy, the beef was soft, the tofu’s sauce was exquisite, and so much more! To top it all off, we were offered a complimentary dessert which was DELICIOUS! Dishes we ordered: * Tofu with Double Mushrooms * Sweet and Sour Shrimp * Cold Beijing Noodle with sesame paste (vegan) * Chicken jalapeños * Combo chow mein and combo fried rice * Cumin lamb
This is a proper no nonsense place for halal Chinese food. Service is super swift and staff friendly. Prices are a bit on the higher side. So is the level of spice in the food so be careful and they even warn you accordingly. So when they mention too spicy , then believe it! Portions are large as well.
I went there with my family, the food was good and I would definitely recommend however there are only 2 tables with 5+ seating options (the rest are for 2-4 people) so when another bigger group came, the owners kept on rushing us with continuous questions about how the food is and started clearing our table. We got the hot & sour soup, garlic chicken with steamed rice, hotpot and chowmein (the steamed rice is single serving).

Came here for the Beijing hotpot, which has sauerkraut and pork slices and very delicious sugared garlic. I think it tastes less delicious than before, will not come back.

Been coming here for years man and today order food to go and it was not good. So disappointed... food was always so good but today was not it. Not cool. Shrimp fried rice was not good or the beef and broccoli.
Food: First of all, the La-Si-Ni “spicy” chicken dish that everyone raves about is not spicy. It was very disappointing in spiciness, but it was fine to eat. The eggplant was pretty good and my friends enjoyed their dumplings. Service: Horrible, predatory practices. We ordered 3 dishes and rice for 3 people, and the server kept pressuring us to order more. I said no 5 times in Mandarin, which the server spoke fluently, so it was not a communication issue but a matter of disrespect and refusal to listen. After saying no so many times, she still tried to stealthily add another dish to our order. She then gave us major attitude and was angry about it, which seemed quite unnecessary. I’m accustomed to “traditional” Chinese/Vietnamese service but this was far beyond that, this was just raging greed. They also refuse to serve tap water and insist on you buying bottled water. Everything about this place felt scammy like they kept trying to drain us for more money, rather than simply be a normal restaurant. Also, restaurants in CA that serve alcohol - which they do- are required to provide water for free if asked. Atmosphere: There was a rancid smell at our table, I’m guessing from the condiments that had probably been rotting there for a long time. Every few bites I caught a whiff of it and would lose my appetite. Overall, the food is fine, but I wish we left immediately when the server tried to pressure us. It was not a pleasant experience at all; the spiciness of the dish was a let down, and they add a mandatory gratuity of 16% for parties of 3 OR LESS people. Never seen that before. I wouldn’t recommend eating here and would never go back.
The food here was good and the service is A-OK, but at 3:30 PM with NO other tables occupied, it was not a surprise that there was little wait time for our light late lunch. Ordered three dishes (and a small pot of tea at $3.50) in this small, pleasant venue; (although carpet runner is a bit gritty, and both my guest and an employee did miss a step and nearly tripped with rug runner having a permanent bend in it). Would have enjoyed recommending this place to others until I got the check to find that disclosure of 16% mandatory tip indicated on the menu is misleading. The amount of tip includes the sales tax, and maybe more? (There were two figures for taxes on the bill- forgot to take a screenshot). Therefore the tip for the total on the food alone was just a tad over 26%. I’m always in favor of tipping 20% and/or more on the food IF I’m in a place with excellent service and food, and in an especially nice venue that makes for a great dining experience. This place is NOT that. It’s a mid-range looking restaurant that is certainly NOT a fine dining venue, even though the food IS good. Here’s the math: $56.90 for 2 apps, one main dish and tea before tax. Mandatory tip brought total to $71.71. I did ask server about this policy & showed him the math. The nice young man said his manager has heard this feedback before and basically claims it’s “industry standard.” Sorry, it’s not! Nor should “tipping” be mandatory at 26% of total food costs, especially in a venue like this! Can NOT recommend this place for this reason only. Without this mandatory tipping policy, we’d be regulars. But can’t support an obligatory 26% (plus) tip of $14.81 on a food bill of $56.90 when there’s no choice! Leaves a bad taste…Pun intended
Been coming here for years man and today order food to go and it was not good. So disappointed... food was always so good but today was not it. Not cool. Shrimp fried rice was not good or the beef and broccoli.
Very rude, crude and basic. Massively overpriced. One of the worst experiences I have had in a restaurant in recent times. There were barely any meat in the dishes. Portions were small. Don't really trust the Islamic in the name. Halal status needs to be verified.
Stopped by this restaurant for dinner before heading home after a long drive, as we don’t live in the area. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The food was mediocre at best, and the customer service was terrible. The young man with long hair working there was stern and rude, which really set the tone. Prices were unreasonably high for the quality and portion size, even rice had to be purchased separately. Overall, it was not a pleasant experience. Between the lackluster food, poor service, and overpriced menu, we won’t be returning.
I’ll be honest I didn’t get to taste the food after driving 200 miles skipping breakfast waiting 45 minutes and specifically picking this place for my lunch as I had not had a halal Mandarin food since South Patterson New Jersey I thought that I would come in here and see either orange chicken or General tso chicken which are very traditional options..or the ability to pick two or three different meats with my food. I didn’t realize I was going to see $24 platters where I was told I was forced to eat a large portion of one meat that I couldn’t split to two MEATs? furthermore, I was told eating in was the same as takeout and watched someone give a giant order for takeout in front of me and was told it would be ready in 10 minutes while I sat there waiting for a server who was gonna pop up God knows when Very frustrating and disappointing in this climate today one as a brother, I come here to support a HALAL business and get treated this way with no respect by the man working even after I mentioned I traveled from far away and was excited about the experience, literally waiting outside 45min Pretty horrible to do that to somebody, but it is what it is
Unfortunately, my experience at this restaurant was disappointing. The service was very poor, and the staff were unprofessional. The food was halal and tasted good, but that was the only positive part. The bill was surprisingly high, and they added a tip without our consent, which is unacceptable. After reading other reviews, I noticed that many customers had the same complaints. Honestly, I do not recommend this restaurant.
Bring them here if you want to scam someone. Everything is really expensive and not worth the money. Visit a different location, such as Chutney, which offers the best Amazon cuisine ever along with excellent customer service. With excellent prices, too. Without even asking, this unscrupulous eatery deducted a tip from my card again without even asking me.
Very pricey. We ended up paying a $240 for 3 people. We ordered the Beijing hot pot with 6 meats, 1 hot and sour chicken, few veggies, 1 order of dumplings. Tıp was already included, not sure if it's a common practice in San Francisco to include the tip. Check your checks to make sure everything is correct. We didn't check and we might have been overcharged for the drinks.
To be honest worst place to be .. didn’t even care to give water .. service goes down the drain .. the guy with the long hair is wanna be boss .. asked for a lemon they don’t have it are you kidding me .. plus they automatically added tip .. don’t ever Come here ..

I rarely leave negative reviews, but I want to share my most recent experience here. I’ve been to this restaurant at least five times since moving from China a couple of years ago, and unfortunately, the quality has noticeably declined while the prices have gone up. Our recent meal for two came out to almost $200, with a mandatory 16% tip already added to the bill, leaving no option to reduce or adjust it. Food: • The lamb was not fresh — a big disappointment, especially for a halal restaurant where freshness should be a priority. • The hotpot broth was very bland, and since I don’t use dipping sauces, the lack of flavor in the meat was obvious. • The mushu beef had far too many vegetables and very little meat. • The seafood bun was just okay, but at $20+ each, I expected more filling compared to the thick bun. Service: There was essentially no service. No water was provided (only bottled water for purchase), and when we asked for extra bowls, staff were too busy — we ended up using teacups as dipping bowls. Overall, the value just isn’t there anymore. With declining food quality, high prices, and poor service, I don’t think I’ll be returning.
Low quality food. Very small portions, like very small and expensive. Dishes don’t even come with white rice. Forced 16% gratuity for 2 people or less, basically forced for no service. This isn’t fine dining just a normal local spot. Only good that it was halal.
We visited this restaurant due to its halal Chinese menu. Food was okish, and service was fast. However the waiter was extremely rude, instructing everyone to be quick to order and eat, as they need to close at 9pm. In the end, be ready for a bill shock as they add 18% gratuity to the prices after tax. Overall this was our first and last visit. I will not recommend.
It wasn’t what I expected. The service was not great at all, and the food was oily and had a funky smell. We ate there because our group was large (15+), but the place felt underwhelming. There was a mandatory tip included—what was that for, given the lack of service? I understand we had a big group, but the staff didn’t provide much service. My mother and aunt couldn’t even finish their meals because of the smell. *Thumps down*.
