Opinions de Pho Huong Viet San Francisco
I absolutely love Pho Huong Viet. I first came based on a recommendation and have been coming back weekly ever since. Easily one of the best bowls of pho (beef and chicken are incredible) and Hanoi beef stews (pictured) I’ve ever had. The broth is so, so delicious. You gotta try it! Thank you Chef Huong, David, and team for amazing meals and service!
Distinct Northern flavors with crab-filling spring rolls complementing the smoky main dish. Bún Chả (boon-ja) came out hot and generously plated with the meatballs juicy and soft submerged in diluted fish sauce. The restaurant has a focused menu offering what they know best and the food reflected.
One of my favorite spots to stop by at for either lunch or dinner! Their chicken pho is amazing and I always like the fried noodle version of it since it comes with fried shallots, peanuts, and cilantro that make for such an amazing flavor profile 😋 it’s served with a side of the broth so you can still have something to drink on the side. Paired with the crab imperial spring rolls (can ask for spicy or not spicy) it’s a perfect match. Will continue coming back here and supporting!
I was there with my friends last week, the foods are awasome, the owner was so nice, she even recommended us more delicious glass noodles with chicken which is super delicious. They welcomed us very well and remind us a lot about Hà Nội foods. I will be back when I'm in town. Love this place
The chicken pho here is what I call a “healing pho”. All my anxiety, stress, and existential crisis are just swept away by one sip of this heavenly broth. No I’m not exaggerating :) I grew up eating Northern-style Pho in Vietnam, and this is exactly what I’d expect from an authentic Pho restaurant. Also I’d recommend adding a poached egg to the order on cold days :) Honestly IT’S JUST TOO GOOD.
Wow!! The most authentic Vietnamese food I've had since living in Vietnam! The Bun Cha was just like I remember from Ha Noi & Hai Phong, the only thing to make it more authentic would be if the diners could sit on small stools by the street with Honda Airblades zipping by! Don't forget to finish your meal with a relaxing Ca Phe Sua.
We got dry glass noodle chicken (mien ga tron), bun cha nem cua be, and beef pho. Everything was amazing. I absolutely love the mien ga tron and will definitely come back for it. They are among the rare places that serve good Northern style pho, which I really appreciate. The pho broth with garlic vinegar was just chef’s kiss. I’m also impressed with the spring roll (nem cua be) but the bun cha was only meh. House-made soy milk was good, albeit quite pricey for the portion. Overall, great place. Would definitely come back. Recommend everything except the bun cha.
Great pho spot that's different from most! I had the chicken pho and it was so flavorful and healing. I enjoyed the sides of pickled garlic and fish sauce. My boyfriend had the beef pho and loved it. The noodles are wide and flat here and very tasty. The vegetarian spring rolls as an appetizer are very tasty. Everything was fresh, hot and tasty!
I love the GIMONGOUS GARLIC and THAI PEPPER! The Special Pho with Combination was just enough to hit the spot. The noodles are bigger, but I think that's the Northern Style? They have ginger julienned as a garnish to the pho. That was good. The atmosphere was relaxing as they played piano jazz, perfect for a late autumn lunch. I came after the lunch crowd which is preferred for myself.
11-20-21: Heard many great things about the pho! Ordered the pho with rare 🥩 and tendons. My first time trying Northern Vietnamese pho which is a little "cleaner" than the Southern Vietnamese pho. The trick is to add a spoon of the garlic 🌶️ vinegar to the broth. I liked that they used real rice noodles instead of dry 👍. Overall, the pho was very tasty and I will definitely be back again. Next time, I will try the chicken pho. The server mentioned their chicken 🐓 is better than Turtle Towers pho.
Ordered the beef pho with 3 meats and the charming chicken pho with default thigh and breast. We also ordered the crab spring rolls and it was delicious! Both pho broth was clean, flavorful and refreshing! We both almost drank our bowls of broth completely which we never do. It is definitely more expensive and the service is a bit slower compared to our usual go-to pho places but northern style tastes so different and most importantly delicious! Will come back for sure.
This is the best pho I've ever had in the USA. It's the only place I've had that actually reminds me of the pho I had in Hanoi. I was shown this place by my friend who grew up near where the owner did in Vietnam. Also their house made sauce is to die for - I literally take it home and put it on all of my food for weeks after. I love this place so much and the sauce is my precious
We started coming here for the ambiance initially. The mixed chicken pho is my favorite item to order- the fried garlic and peanut topping makes it so yummy! We bring our baby and he loved eating the noodles. We come here often. The owner is friendly and service is fairly fast.
Best northern style pho I’ve had outside of Vietnam. I get the charming chicken with white/dark meat and sometimes I get the dry noodle dishes. The broth has so many layers of flavor and the fresh onions and lemongrass brighten up the bowl and my day. Amazing staff and service and food. We love coming here. You pay for quality and you get quality.
Family run business with a smile! The pho was very tasty and food came out in 5 minutes. The owner, talked with my girlfriend and I for 15 minutes after the restaurant closed and he was such a breath of fresh air. Would highly rec this spot.
Got the #3 Simple dish executed well. Broth was a bit too salty but I feel like they got more bangers so 5 stars
Probably the best bowl of pho in my life!! So flavorful, and the pickled garlic and sauces let you really perfect your taste. I debated between M and L because I was so hungry, and went with Large. But it was still so much food I couldn’t finish and had leftovers. Service was slightly slow because it was busy Friday night, but it was soooo worth it!
I was still hungry when I left. Their #1 special beef pho, all meats $18.75 (M) felt more like a small. Their broth is clean tasting and is complex. There's no bean sprouts, Thai basil or hoisin sauce as it is northern style pho. This is my first time having julienned fresh ginger in pho. It prolly took them a lot work to slice them like that. While it didn't add anything to the taste of the pho, I can appreciate the effort. Not bad for San Francisco standards. I prefer going to SJ for some really good pho. Service was fine as I didn't have to wait for a table and the food came out quick. Tables were available at 1pm on a Sunday.
One of my best northern pho place in SF! Love all the ginger they put on it. Clear and favorful soup, and nice fresh beef! Must eat!
This is the best pho in San Francisco for sure! The ingredients are super fresh, you can teste it. The garlic sauce plus the ginger is the perfect combination. Family owned clean delicious. I leave this place thinking about when I'm coming back. Thanks
My favorite pho spot in the city. The broth is rich and flavorful without being overly salty, and the noodles always seem fresh. The owners are super friendly, and you can tell they care a lot about their food. Definitely recommend giving this place a try!
Excellent Vietnamese food! We loved the beef pho and bun cha. The beef broth is the best I’ve had in the city. We also got a side of veggie fried spring rolls. The owner, David, is extremely kind and we’ll be back for sure!
The most delicious pho ever had. Great broth and fresh ingredients. Loved everything there. The owner and chef are so kind too
“Oh my GOD that smells good.” The broth at this place is so flavorful. The green onion and ginger topping was perfect with the beef. Chicken pho was super flavorful to the point it would have been good without the chicken (which is one of the menu options). I’m still partial to Southern style, but this is by far the best Northern style pho I’ve had. Plenty of room to sit during weekend lunch, very kind and friendly service.
The Chicken Pho is the best i have tried so far, but you cant go wrong with anything on the menu. Nearly everything is Gluten Free
Wow now the places I gave 5 stars, how do I rate this restaurant? I can’t wait to bring our friends and relatives here. Combo pho is the best yet. From where we come from there wasn’t a Vietnamese restaurant as good. The broth was to die for. All the meats were so tender, not tough and over souped to soften as other places may attempt to do. I can’t find meat this soft even at our grocery stores. Thank You!!! Added plus it the server or perhaps the owner, such a nice gentleman.
A friend took me here for Mixed Chicken Pho (dry style with sauce and soup on the side) and Glassy Mixed Chicken Mien. They were pretty good. If you like dry noodle mixed . Highly recommend. Even though I have ate similar dry noodle mix, it was my first time trying dry pho and mien, and I definitedly come back. My friend also called Chicken Giblets. It was good too since they use free range chicken, the chicken meat and giblets taste pretty good. We also tried Hanoi's beef stew and the beef was soft and tender. Also pretty good. Price was reasonable compared to other Viet restaurants.
Love coming to this pho spot! Their specialty is the chicken dry noodles however their beef pho is SO good that I order it every time. Pair with the fried crab spring rolls, such a hearty meal. The owners are so friendly and welcoming, the atmosphere along with the food makes this place exceptional. Would give it 10 stars if I could.

The beef rice noodles here are so delicious. Especially, the beef was too soft, and the soup was thick, light, and savory. This was my second try, and it tasted just as good. One flaw was that the waiting time was long because this place was so busy. I think there should be more serving steps during the busy time.

It is open recently. A friend recommends this place. I ordered a Special Beef Pho with all in one combo. The waitress was very proud with the soup base and recommended adding their house made vinegar. I saw some garlic slices and red chilli in the vinegar jar. She emphasized that their soup was made without MSG and I agreed with it. Portion is as medium as other restaurant. Their beef steak and beef meat ball are the best. Will sure come back next time.
We just came back from our trip to Hanoi and were looking for a place in the bay that had bun cha. It was delicious here!! The meat was a bit on the dry side but overall five stars. I think $23 is ridiculous considering it was $2 in Vietnam but I guess that’s what it takes to keep restaurants open in SF these days. Bathrooms were clean as well. Service was very friendly. Also, it is a no-alcohol establishment. Would definitely come back.
It was not the pho that I am used to, but the one from the north as the owner explained to me. First, they don't give you basil and sprouts, only jalapenos and lime. The soup itself has chopped green onions, chopped cilantro, and julienned ginger sticks added to it. Also, they use fresh noodles instead of dry ones. The soup, the flank stake and meatballs flavors were good. I wish I took out ginger before I mixed it all in. Not my thing. Also, the fresh noodles are too slippery to my taste, and don't hold a lot of soup. Not bad overall, but I prefer a more traditional pho.
I recommend giving the mixed chicken pho a try at this establishment. The broth boasts a delightful flavor, while the noodles possess a satisfying chewiness that perfectly absorbs the sauce. Additionally, I enjoy ordering chicken giblets as an accompaniment. It's worth noting that the portion sizes are relatively modest compared to other dining venues. The restaurant itself is spacious, though it operates with just two waiters, which may result in slightly longer wait times for your dishes to be prepared.
not as great as I had hoped but I love to support local restaurants!

UPDATE: NO DOG ALLOWED even SERVICE DOG!Be ready leave your dog wherever. Our friends recommended this cafe because it serves the most delicious and warming Pho. If you have never tasted Vietnamese cuisine, Pho is a great dish. It is served in M and L sizes, with rice noodles, greens, you can choose the types of meat (see the menu). The cafe is small, but it has enough tables. The service is friendly.
Food is good, service is super bad/slow. If you’re expecting to eat here for an hour, add 30-45 minutes. They only have one server for a big room. Would be a much better experience if they hired 2 more servers or magically shrunk the restaurant in half.
This is a place to get northern Vietnamese food. Their pho is totally different from these Pho restaurants we ate. Cash only if under $20. Updated after original review: changed it from 5 Stars to 3. The reason: I got the receipt from email and found I was overcharged for $1. The two meat pho should be $14.75. But they charged me $15.75. Although it is only one dollar, I am unhappy that they made the mistake on purpose by charging a standard order as “custom order). Receipt is attached here (it shows as custom amount).
Service is extremely slow. Peak weekend lunch time where no line but almost all tables full. Just one single server. There were two available tables. Had us standing for a table for 15 minutes. Then from us ordering to getting the food it was at least 30 mins. Shouldn't be this long for pho. And then another very long wait to get the check. Service is also inaccurate. The table next to us ordered spring rolls and as they were paying said they never got that order. Food itself was good but not enough to warrant the wait and slow service imo. I prefer other styles of pho, personally found this version too light.

I was really looking forward to enjoying a satisfying bowl of pho at Pho Huong Viet, but unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. The service was a bit lacking, requiring us to hunt down the owner to place our order. While the food arrived promptly after that, the water was mysteriously absent until after we had placed the order (15 minutes after we got seated). The biggest letdown was the Vietnamese iced coffee. It was essentially a glass filled with ice and a tiny amount of coffee. My friend's Thai iced tea, while also mostly ice, at least came in a larger glass. It felt like a complete rip-off. Pho Huong Viet serves Northern style pho, which is quite different from Southern style pho, so dont be alarmed. Northern style pho is more minimalistic compared to Southern style pho, and it doesn't come with your typical veggies (like bean sprouts, Thai basil) and hoisin sauce. The pho itself was overpriced for the quality. A medium bowl with just one meat costs a whopping $15. It gets more expensive if you add more meat or opt for a large bowl. I opted for the special beef pho with butter brisket, but the meat was dry and lacked flavor. The broth had a decent taste but was a tad bit salty. While I appreciate that they offer Northern-style pho with ginger and cilantro already in the bowl, the overall experience was underwhelming. The noodles were cooked perfectly, but that's about the only positive I can say.

First time here and everything was good until I found a bug in my pho. I kindly reported it to the manager and he insisted on giving me a $4 discount (meaning I’d still be paying $13) rather than comping the whole meal. When I told him I’m not paying for food that had a bug in it, he told me to “leave and never come back”. Terrible service. Don’t waste your money here.
Food-wise: the pho broth was overly salty and disappointing compared to past visits. The crab egg roll was tasty, but that was the only highlight. Service-wise: this is where it really went downhill. We ordered beef ball and tendon pho, but the server brought us brisket instead. When we flagged the mistake, instead of simply correcting it, he insisted we had ordered brisket and even claimed we’d asked if it was fatty (we didn’t). He eventually brought a small bowl of cold tendon, which we had to ask another server to warm up—thankfully she was kind and helpful. When the bill came, the original server skipped giving us an itemized receipt, just showed us his phone to pay. After paying, we saw we were charged extra for the tendon he mistakenly swapped out. When we pointed it out, he doubled down and claimed he told us he’d charge for it (he didn’t). His dismissive attitude and refusal to own up to the mistake felt like gaslighting. He eventually agreed to refund the dollar, but by then, the trust and experience were completely ruined. I’ve been here before and had good experiences, but this time left a really sour taste. Between the salty broth and the poor service, I won’t be coming back.
The food tastes okay. Service is super slow. I waited for 30 min for a table and 30 min for the food. Not even that many customers. Why do you need 30 min to prepare pho? It’s a simple food.
This place has a serious service issue. We waited 30 minutes for water. After waiting 45 min for our food we put $5 on the table and left without eating. It is unacceptable for this when Pho is such a simple dish.

I hate leaving small businesses bad reviews but this place DISCRIMINATES AGAINST BABIES!!! If I could rate a place 0 stars, I would. We came on a Saturday night at 630pm and there was one empty table with a 4 seater. We have 4 adults, 1 toddler and 1 baby sleeping in a car seat. My mom asked for a table first because we were circling for parking but when she told them we had 2 kids and 4 adults, the woman said there's a wait and to ask the man. Then the man said no table. We thought it was just because he was busy that the man said it like that and that he meant there's no table at the moment. 5 minutes later when we parked and all went inside, he took a look at the baby sleeping in the car seat and shook his head like he was in disbelief. We told him nicely that we would be happy to split into 2 tables and wait and he still said "NO. No table. We can't serve you." And kept shaking his head and waving us to leave. You seated a party of 5 right before us and their party wasn't even complete. We couldn't believe that he was so rude and discriminating. I would understand it if one of my kids was screaming or something but my children were not making any noise at all. I'm bummed because we wanted to try the food but after the rude experience, never giving them our business again. The least he could've said was sorry for not being able to accommodate us.
